In some ways, a remake of the cyberpunk classic that is System Shock feels years overdue. It is a groundbreaking title that deserves to be recognized as a staple of the genre and the original version is essentially impenetrable to new audiences. Yet, in some ways it still seems like a baffling project to undertake, given how System Shock is a vitally important experience to a very small group of people.
However, System Shock was never really intended to be a game for everyone. It requires effort to enjoy it for what it is and in the TikTok era of instant gratification and miniscule attention spans, it leads one to wonder who this is made for. For fossils like myself who grew up loving 90s cyberpunk and titles directly inspired by System Shock like Deus Ex and Bioshock, despite having never played the original, this is a perfect jumping in point.

Nothing goes unnoticed by the trained eye, and Elon Musk has been practicing it more since he took control of X/Twitter. When Fallout 4 was being booed over its latest update, he saw something that the community failed to see. However, what he noticed may not be a pearl of great price.
In-game bugs have been bugging players for a long time, and Bethesda is trying to give them quality updates. But that doesn’t seem to work the charm on the community, so the fans are turning their heads toward the mods provided by Nexus to improve their game experience.
Fallout 4 Appears to Have Attracted a Different Kind of Attention Fallout is among the favorite games of the Tesla CEO.
Bethesda might not be good at appeasing all the fans, but the company did that with the X-boss, Elon Musk. Musk himself is a gamer and has confirmed in some interviews that Fallout,...

An exciting reveal has been promised by Sgf for 2K Games; one of the several studios lined up at the Summer Game Fest on June 7. The Sgf account on X, formerly Twitter put out a message stating “2K plans to reveal the next iteration in one of 2K’s biggest and most beloved franchises at Summer Game Fest on Friday, June 7”
2K Games have several franchises to their credit including the NBA and WWE series. However, if it is a ‘beloved and biggest franchise’ that we are talking about, the contenders are more likely to be Borderlands, Bioshock or Mafia. The last game in the Borderlands franchise was Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands that came out in Mar 2022; while the last numbered Borderlands game was Borderlands 3, back in Sep 2019. As far as Bioshock goes, Bioshock Infinite came out a good 11 years ago in Mar 2013; and a remastered collection of all 3 games...

Gore Verbinski would seem to have hit a snag in his big-budget blockbuster career after his Lone Ranger movie for Disney became a notoriously bloated flop. However, he was able to return with a smaller directorial effort after that, with the suspense film A Cure for Wellness. It has been eight years since the release of A Cure for Wellness, and Verbinski returns from his hiatus to helm an action-adventure film with the humorous title Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die. The movie sports an impressive cast, including Sam Rockwell, Michael Peña, Haley Lu Richardson, Zazie Beetz and Juno Temple. The film has just started production on location in South Africa.
The description of the movie’s plot, according to Deadline, reads, “The film, written by Matthew Robinson (Love & Monsters), centers on a man from the future (Rockwell) who arrives at a diner in Los Angeles where he must recruit...

Right now, Far Cry is currently one of Ubisoft’s longest-running franchises and is still getting new games every couple of years. Ubisoft tries to rediscover it; they try to give gamers a world that is worth exploring and characters worth interacting with. This legacy of having interesting characters, specifically an interesting villain, came from Far Cry 2.
Back then, it was the pinnacle of what was possible if developers invested time in some exciting new technologies. Dunia Engine was a one-of-a-kind game engine; Jackal was a one-of-a-kind villain; and that game’s world was unlike anything players had explored before. But its director explains that the inspiration for that came from a very unexpected place.

There are few directors or personalities inside the video game industry who can really make anything they want without asking questions. One of those names is Hideo Kojima, creator of Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding. This Japanese creator made games reach a new level of originality.
Unfortunately, there are not all great ideas; there was a time when this director had some wacky ideas that fans wouldn’t like. This project was a zombie online game that would have required players to pay for multiple accounts in order to keep playing.
A Great Director Does Not Always Have Amazing Ideas Hideo Kojima had some ideas in the past that were no good at all.
The game industry has some names that change it all forever, with titles that really push this business to a new level, making video games one of the most profitable entertainment mediums in the world.

Few directors and creatives survive after their first big success; people like Ken Levine, Glen Schofield, and Cliff Bleszinski were not so lucky after the success of their greatest IP. Once Gears of War was behind Cliffy B, the director tried several times to make a new great game.

BioShock creator Ken Levine has shown off some new gameplay details for his upcoming Judas to select outlets, and the old BioShock DNA is unmistakeable.
There’s an awful lot of chat about “narrative Lego” in the various news posts swirling around about Judas, the next game from BioShock designer Ken Levine. It’s a phrase Levine first brought up about a decade ago when he first started talking publicly about his first project since 2013’s BioShock Infinite, and is shorthand for the way Judas uses discrete blocks of plot to construct a unique story for each player.
Over the past few weeks or so, Levine’s new studio, Ghost Story Games, has invited a couple of journalists from big, posh outlets to sample Judas first-hand. Both IGN's Ryan McCaffrey and The Game Awards’ Geoff Keighley have made videos in which they interview Ken Levine and play through his ambitious-sounding action-adventure.

After eight years, Gore Verbinski’s back with a thriller called Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die. And it now has a cast, with Sam Rockwell, Michael Peña and Zazie Beetz among the large names.
It’s almost exactly eight years since director Gore Verbinski released a film – that being the 2016 horror, A Cure For Wellness. Now, though, the Pirates Of The Caribbean filmmaker appears to have gotten a new project together, with Deadline reporting that a cast has been announced for a genre mash-up called Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die.
Among the major names you’ll find Sam Rockwell (most recently seen in Argylle), Haley Lu Richardson, Juno Temple, Zazie Beetz and Michael Peña.
According to Deadline’s plot summary, the film’s about a “man from the future” – who’ll be played by Rockwell – whose mission is to assemble a group of “disgruntled patrons” (played...

Believe it or not, but it’s been nearly eight years since the release of Gore Verbinski’s last movie — the underrated A Cure for Wellness — but the director finally has a new project in the works. Deadline reports that Verbinski has assembled a fantastic ensemble of actors for his action-adventure movie titled Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die.
Sam Rockwell, one of my all-time favourite actors, will be leading the cast, which includes Haley Lu Richardson (The White Lotus), Juno Temple (Fargo), Michael Peña (Ant-Man and the Wasp), and Zazie Beetz (Joker). Rockwell will star as a “man from the future” who arrives at a Los Angeles diner to recruit a “precise combination of disgruntled patrons to join him on a one-night-six-block quest to save the world from the terminal threat of a rogue artificial intelligence.“

Newly-formed developer Antistatic Studios are diving into the PvE realm with their new title, codenamed Hornet. The team has unveiled some appropriately teaster footage of the game in action, edited in a found footage style that definitely hits the mark.
The new developer is comprised of industry vets, including Lukasz Ludkowski (writer for Cyberpunk 2077: Edgerunners), Kris Teper (Lead Environment Artist for BioShock), co-founder Maciej Miksztal (who also co-founded Starward Industries and Far From Home), Michal Koltun (Gameplay Programmer for Conan Exiles), and Gabriel Nordholm (Community Manager for Project Winter).
As for Hornet, the title is a cooperative tactical shooter that takes place in a post-nuclear European continent that’s “fueled by emergent gameplay”, where operatives (the players) work for a mysterious organization known as Mortfield Industries. Their mission is to search and contain any paranormal activity by any means necessary. It is a “procedurally-assisted open world full of dynamic events,...

The Fps genre has evolved quite a bit since its inception. Advances in technology allowed for better graphics, smarter enemy AI, and the introduction of narratives and new mechanics. Games such as Bioshock, Half-Life, and Halo are regarded as the best Fps titles out there, thanks in no small part to these improvements. Lately, though, many gamers have been yearning for a simpler time, when Fps games were more about big guns and fast action and less about story and worldbuilding.
The term “boomer shooter” is used to describe a specific kind of Fps that intentionally mimics the design principles of older shooters. These include challenging enemies that force players to stay on the move, pixelated graphics, the ability to carry more than two weapons at a time, and health bars that don’t regenerate.
The origin of the term is widely debated among video game historians. The running theory...

The blockbuster post-apocalyptic video game Death Stranding is being adapted into a live-action film by A24, with the help of its creator Hideo Kojima.
According to the official synopsis, the movie will “delve into the mysteries surrounding the apocalyptic event called the ‘Death Stranding,’ which blurred the lines between life and death, and brought forth nightmarish creatures into a world on the brink of collapse.”
In a statement, the esteemed video game designer explained why he chose to work with the production company. “A24 was born into this world about 10 years ago, their presence is singular within the industry, they are like no other,” he said. “The films they are delivering to the world are high in quality and very innovative. I have been attracted to their creations and they have even inspired my own work. Their innovative approach to storytelling aligns with what Kojima Productions has been doing for the last 8 years.

The director of The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes is heading to the world of Stephen King next with The Long Walk. More here:
Here’s one of two news updates today on projects based on Stephen King stories that will at some point be heading to a cinema near you. Oddly enough, both projects also focus on murderous dystopian TV contests and both were originally written under King’s Richard Bachman pseudonym, his one-time alter ego who was known for penning a harder, nastier brand of horror.
The first story concerns the announcement of The Long Walk, a novella published by King back in 1979. It was eventually published in a collection of other ‘Bachman tales’ in 1985. That collection also featured The Running Man, which is also in development at the moment with Edgar Wright this week offering an update on the project.

An adaptation of The Long Walk, a Stephen King novel that was published under the Richard Bachman pen name back in 1979, has been trudging through development hell for decades. At one point, the rights were in the hands of Frank Darabont, who made the King adaptations The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and The Mist. Then the rights passed over to New Line Cinema, where Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark director André Øvredal was hired to direct the film from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt, whose credits include the two most recent Scream movies. While doing the press rounds for his film The Last Voyage of the Demeter earlier this year, Øvredal revealed that he was no longer involved with The Long Walk, and said not making that movie is one of the big regrets of his life. Now we know who has replaced him at the helm: Francis Lawrence.

When I first got my PlayStation 3, I remember being so excited to actually be able to download demos, a concept that was previously regulated to the PC crowd. The first one I grabbed was the demo for the original BioShock. I played 10 minutes, turned it off, and immediately ordered the game. It only took 10 minutes of that demo to fully sell me on what they were offering; I just wanted to wait to experience it in the context of the full game.
This exact same thing happened to me last year when I tried out the demo for the horror visual novel Slay the Princess during Steam Next Fest. Its striking visuals and clever writing got its hooks in me, and I didn’t need to see more than the first 10 minutes. I ignored all trailers and previews, waiting patiently for its release.

Hollywood has been attempting to bring Bioshock to the big screen for quite some time, with the latest incarnation set to be directed by Francis Lawrence and written by Michael Green for Netflix. The WGA strike halted development, but now that the strike is over, Michael Green provided an update on the Bioshock movie while speaking with Collider.
“You have to measure your words, or you’ll start to see a laser pointer at my forehead from the Netflix legal,” Michael Green teased. “Netflix has been amazing about it. They were excited about it before the strike, they’re excited about it now, post-strike. Yes, I got called, the, ‘How’s it coming along?’ the minute the strike was over, ‘You about ready…?’ Been meeting regularly with Francis Lawrence and his team to refine a draft to go back in. From pumpkin-spice beverages to decorative skeleton shopping, there are plenty of seasonal traditions to get you in the right mood for the Halloween season. One of my personal favorite Autumn rituals is to break up nightly scary movie marathons with some spooky gaming of the indie variety. After all, if you take into account the limitations enforced by profit-hungry studios, you’re more likely to find unique scares in a title developed by a small group of passionate genre fans rather than a gigantic corporation.
And with the indie horror scene growing exponentially as these games become viral hits, we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six indie titles that are perfect for the Halloween season. I mean, there are only so many days until October 31st, so we might as well help each other celebrate by sharing our favorites.
As usual, these recommendations are based on personal opinion,...

It's not out of line to wonder whether we've hit an inflection point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. How many times can a franchise dangle that tantalizing football in front of its fans, coax countless viewers to build up a full head of steam in the hopes of having their sky-high expectations met again and again, and then snatch that prize away right at the last second? Recent history suggests that a shared universe built primarily on the promise of the next big thing to come does, in fact, have an expiration date -- or, at the very least, a moment of truth where over a decade of goodwill finally threatens to run out. After a series of low points poked several glaring holes in the McU's once-impenetrable armor, from divisive entries like "Eternals" and "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" to unmistakable misfires such as "Thor: Love and Thunder,...

Things have been pretty quiet surrounding developer Cloud Chamber and the fourth BioShock game for a while now. It now appears that the waters have gotten a bit muddier, if a recent discovery on an artist’s ArtStation page is to be believed.
Per RelyOnHorror, Cloud Chamber Senior Concept Artist Mack Sztaba, who is currently working with the team assigned to BioShock, recently updated (then removed) a reference to his work on the still-in-development title on his ArtStation resume, with the indication that the game was aiming for a 2028 release. That reference was subsequently scrubbed, but not before eagle-eyed fans grabbed a screenshot.
Obviously, until 2K or Cloud Chamber mention anything, this isn’t a definitive answer to when we’d see the next BioShock game. Still, after rumours ranging from its setting to the game being open world, not to mention that the first hints that the game was...

“My philosophy for making games is that I have this thing I call: ‘The Trinity Hook,” explains indie developer Thomas Brush.
“What that means is that any project I’m working on has to appeal to the audience on three separate levels. First of all, it needs to have a decent story hook. Then, it needs to have a strong visual hook and finally, it needs to have a gripping mechanical hook. You’ve got to tick all three of those boxes. Otherwise it’s not worth doing.”
Just from a glance, you can see how these guiding principles helped shape the vision for Brush’s latest: Twisted Tower. Indeed, as we sit down with the charismatic creator, it’s evident that he has given a lot of serious thought to how he plans on meeting that self-imposed criteria.
And it’s a discipline that seems to have paid off in spades!

It’s been over a year since audiences last heard anything about the “Bioshock” film, based on the popular video game series that “blends sci-fi and horror to pose unique existential and societal questions that reshaped how game stories could be told – all amidst pulse-pounding action gameplay that rewards sharp shooting, clever planning, and lethal improvisation,” according to its official synopsis.
But that’s because, much like everything in Hollywood, it’s in a holding pattern until the dueling SAG-AFTRA/WGA strikes are resolved. “We are, like everyone else in town, waiting for these strikes to resolve, hopefully in a way that honors the efforts of artists, in order to get back to it,” Green told TheWrap while promoting his latest film, “Haunting in Venice.” “When we left things, everyone on all sides, were all very excited to keep going and hoping we can get back to work as soon as possible.

Despite not having a nailed-down release date, Jenito Studios are still giving fans of the upcoming Limerick: Cadence Mansion some love with a new developer walkthrough trailer. Released during the Mix Next showcase, the trailer gives fans all new look at solo developer Daniel Hall’s Unreal Engine 5 powered horror game ahead of its release later this Fall.
The video introduces players to the eponymous Cadence Mansion. It’s here players will have to solve a series of puzzles, outwit the various creatures that inhabit the island, and manage a host of limited resources – all while being stalked by the cursed marionette Limerick.
“With Limerick: Cadence Mansion I wanted to create an original take on the horror genre that takes inspiration from a lot of my favorite horror games and immersive worlds,” said Jenito Studios’ Daniel Hall. “There’s the action, resource management and puzzles of Resident Evil, the deep...

In 2015, Nightdive Studios released their acclaimed Enhanced Edition port of 1994’s System Shock. Shortly afterward, they announced their intention to go a step further and produce a full remake—because making the original more readily available on modern systems is hardly the same as making it accessible to a broader audience. Its sci-fi story, concerning rogue AI Shodan’s bloody mutiny aboard a space station, remains buried under a layer of obtuse controls and interactions that discourage players who may be drawn to similar yet more approachable games like System Shock’s sequel or spiritual successors like BioShock or Prey.
That the System Shock remake retains a sense of individuality is a testament to the careful work of Nightdive Studios, whose developers clearly set out to modernize the original but without homogenizing it. The elevator-connected levels of Citadel Station may now be navigated through a more standard first-person control scheme...

Bloody Disgusting’s Dead Island 2 review is spoiler-free.
When the first Dead Island released all the way back in 2011 (yes it’s been that long), publisher Deep Silver and original developer Techland delivered a satisfying take on the zombie genre with an open map to explore, characters to upgrade, and wild weapons to customize. Now after its initial announcement in 2014 (yes it’s been that long), we finally have the long awaited follow-up. With a brand new setting, a new developer in the form of Dambuster Studios, and all new gameplay mechanics, I’m happy to report that Dead Island 2 is not the game I expected after all these years. It’s better than I could have ever hoped, as well as an absolute love letter to horror movies, the sunny skies of California, and our insatiable appetite for destruction.

Calling the success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” a testament to video-game IP would be a disservice to Illumination and Nintendo. Universal confirmed that it grossed $454 million worldwide in its first week and the Mario movie achieved something that even HBO’s “The Last of Us” did not: It’s a four-quadrant success.
A ton of kids turned out, sure, and it didn’t hurt that the last family movie in theaters was months ago with “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.” However, as IndieWire reported last weekend, 84 percent of the film’s audience was above the age of 13. It’s a rare movie that attracts both kid-friendly crowds and nostalgic adults, that played for all genders and ethnicities, and performed strongly across international markets, and that made it the biggest worldwide animated opening of all time.
Success like that inevitably sets off a frenzy of aspiring copycats, but...

Didn't you hear? Video game adaptations are good now! Or, if not that, then they're no longer "cursed" to fail on principle.
Thanks to movies like "Detective Pikachu" and HBO's "The Last of Us," it's open season on your favorite gaming properties in Hollywood. Be it "Street Fighter," "Tomb Raider," or "Fallout," studios are snatching up the screen rights to everything from vintage fighting games to modern role-playing sensations. Even titles that proved notoriously resistant to reinterpretations in the past, like "Bioshock," are being resurrected as part of this newfound fad.
The film version of "Minecraft" — Mojang Studios' incredibly popular survival sandbox game — has similarly gone through multiple permutations since Warner Bros. announced the project in 2014. It's not too surprising when you think about it. There's no right or wrong way to play; the game's appeal lies firmly in the freedom to whittle away the hours battling Creepers, amassing hordes of resources,...

It’s Bioshock Infinite on Safe Room this week, but be sure to check out our look at a selection of bite-sized horror games in the March edition of Horror Bytes.
Few franchises have cemented themselves into the pantheon of spiritual successors that expand upon their influences with such staggering visual and thematic language as Bioshock has. From the underwater dystopian of Rapture to the militantly theocratic and fascist society in the skies of Columbia, the Bioshock brand has never shied away from exploring the unfettered abuses of power by man. And ten years later, Irrational Games’ most controversial entry in the series, Bioshock: Infinite, proves that there is plenty of conversation still to be had.
So for this week’s lengthy chat, we’re joined by returning friend Michael Sandal to unpack Infinite’s inclusion of a fully voiced protagonist, how the game avoids feeling like one long escort mission,...

Atomic Heart is a new action-adventure Fps title from developer Mundfish. It’s set in an alternate version of our own history in which the Ussr developed a new substance in the 1930s that resulted in incredible technological innovations. Most notably, that new substance allowed Soviet scientists to create advanced robots that became the backbone of a kind of utopia.
Following a catastrophic end to WWII that resulted in the death of millions of civilians, many across the world began ordering those robots to help replace the workers that were lost. Unfortunately, a problem with recent developments in that technology seemingly caused some of the bots to go rogue. As a soldier named Major Sergey Alekseyevich Nechaev, you are tasked with trying to end the chaos and hopefully figure out what went wrong along the way.
It’s obviously a fantastical premise, though there is certainly something compelling about alternate histories and other “What If?...

Atomic Heart from developer Mundfish is quite the conundrum in the way that I kept asking myself, “how did this go so wrong?” Announced all the way back in 2017, the game has had a long development cycle fueled by player hype and expectation over what the game actually was or what it was going to entail. Despite impressive showings and an alarming controversy, the game is finally here and in the hands of players worldwide.
On the surface, Atomic Heart is another power fantasy immersive sim set in a dystopia gone wrong in the vein of Bioshock and Prey, but the game’s myriad of problems hold it back from being anything other than a footnote in an ever crowded spiritual successor landscape.
Players will take up the role of P-3, a no-nonsense officer sent to Facility 3826 to deal with robots that were once obedient going completely rogue; and to...

Because “Bioshock” just wasn’t creepy enough, enter: Blumhouse.
The company behind movies “M3GAN,” the new “Halloween” stuff, and “The Purge” is coming for the “horror-themed” video-game market, according to a Tuesday announcement. And it’s got legits: Blumhouse has hired Zach Wood as president of Blumhouse Games and Dan Sechler as CFO. More on them below.
Buried in this morning’s press release was also this nugget: “At the end of last year, Blumhouse and Atomic Monster announced that they were looking to merge. That deal is anticipated to close sometime in the summer.”
Blumhouse Games will partner with independent game developers on original games for console, PC, and mobile platforms. It will focus on indie-budget games (below $10 million), which fits with “the spirit of its film business,” the press release reads.
“For some time we have been looking to build out a team to start accessing the growth opportunity in interactive media.

Back in 1993, Hollywood had the shot of a lifetime. A shot at an opportunity to change the movie industry forever. It seems like Jason Momoa has grown weary of spending all his free time under the sea as Aquaman, because he's decided to embody a new mythological creature with a look that I promise you could never anticipate. Momoa is set to become a nine-foot-tall half-man, half-beast creature with shaggy fur and long tusks. What kind of horrifying tale could require such a monster, you ask? Just the story of Little Nemo — not the fish, but an adorable little girl who embarks on a fantastical journey through dreams to find her father. All of this takes place in Netflix's upcoming film "Slumberland," and if it sounds familiar, then you might be recalling the Winsor McCay comic strip that inspired the movie's story.
