A laugh and cry fantastical ride, with all the right ingredients.

My Old Ass is an emotionally authentic, fantastical trip on a wave of good vibes. Director Megan Park has done something special here, juxtaposing a surreal concept on some very real dynamics of a young Elliott (Maisy Stella) growing up; and it is a fun, scenic trip worth taking. Without offering any spoilers, this wonderfully crafted transportation into the "what ifs" in the rear view of life, is propped up by a stellar cast - with a ride on the suspension of disbelief expertly kept afloat by Aubrey Plaza. It has a feeling of nostalgia that resonates across generations. The authentic connections between Elliott and her friends, and poignant family moments solidly hit home - scenes with brother Max, and with her mom, bring surprising emotional depths on a vehicle of relatable, and well delivered comedy. We came in for a short trip, and wound up wishing we could hang out longer inside this unexpected cinematic, treat.

A poignant film that transcends age, forging connections with parents, teenagers, and wanderers from hometowns. The profound impact moved the entire theater to tears, and Maisy Stella's exceptional performance left an indelible mark, sparking a desire for more films showcasing her talent. The authentic and well-portrayed connection between Chad (Percy Hynes White) and Elliot (Maisy Stella) adds depth, while the film's portrayal of bisexuality resonates with authenticity, making it relatable to a broad audience. Eagerly anticipating a repeat viewing and sharing this cinematic experience with my teenagers.

What to watch if you're desperate

I usually don't leave reviews. But this, this was bad. I do not get how this has any positive reviews when the whole thing felt so entirely forced. I see that the director/writer also wrote The Fallout which was another movie that didn't live up to the hype despite one very memorable performance. The exploration of sexuality in this felt rather icky which wasn't helped by the male lead feeling like the wrong choice. Several cast felt poorly chosen. The best friends never really fit for me and Aubrey Plaza was underused. If you like cheesy then that is what this is. If you want good though I would look elsewhere.

Didn't get the hype

Was able to see this at Sundance after hearing positive reviews from its premiere a day before and honestly didn't understand the hype. Maisy Stella seems like she's about to become the sort of actress that churns out the same role over and over until like her older self, Aubrey Plaza, people get bored and she has to find some depth. Her character was every bit a cliche pretending to be not like the other girls. Percy Hynes White has all the charisma of a white sheet of paper. The idea someone like that would inspire anyone to question their sexuality is laughable. He also cannot act. Neither can Maddie Ziegler. The writing and directing were fine but never imaginative or moving. I saw someone cry at my screening and had to assume they've never seen a good movie before.

Pure despair

I don't think I've ever watched a film with such a lesbophobic plot as Megan Park's. On top of that Megan cast a misogynist and accused of SA as Percy (chad in the movie my old ass). This is sad, Megan has totally lost my respect. The women's performances are incredible, while the male character leaves something to be desired, he doesn't know how to act. My advice is: don't watch this movie because it's really terrible, unless you're very desperate and have nothing to watch to subject yourself to it. The Fallout was a great film and now Megan Park has decided to invest in a totally lesbophobic plot, congratulations Megan, you are no longer worthy of admiration.
