Director Renny Harlin recently shot an entire trilogy of Strangers movies simultaneously, with The Strangers: Chapter 1 set to reach theatres on May 17th and The Strangers: Chapter 2 and The Strangers: Chapter 3 possibly following by the end of the year… but those aren’t the only Renny Harlin horror movies we’ll be seeing this year. In fact, Vertical will be giving a Harlin-helmed horror movie called Refuge a VOD release this Friday, April 19th – and the trailer for the film can be seen in the embed above!
Scripted by Ben Sztajnkrycer, Refuge has the following synopsis: After a mysterious attack from a malevolent demon during his tour of duty in Afghanistan, Sergeant Rick Pedroni returns home a changed man, and more dangerous than ever.
The film stars Sophie Simnett (Daybreak), Raza Jaffrey (The Rhythm Section), Aston McAuley (Rocketman), Johanna Harlin (Class Reunion 3), Shervin Alenabi (Gangs of London), Atanas Srebrev...

The first clip from Renny Harlin's "The Strangers" remake has just dropped at New York Comic Con, and it's a sufficiently nerve-rattling introduction to the new movie. The 2 minute and 26 second clip plays through a familiar scenario for fans of Bryan Bertino's chilling 2008 home invasion flick, with a few key changes. In the role previously occupied by Liv Tyler, we see "Riverdale" star Madelaine Petsch, who's as captivating as ever as she assesses the potential threat standing outside her door.
The scene from "The Strangers: Chapter 1" is a revamp of one of the most unsettling moments from the first movie, in which a woman who's alone in a cabin gets a visitor who keeps asking for someone named Tamara. We never meet Tamara in the movie, but the fact that this stranger won't stop banging on the door and asking about her again and again is creepy as hell.

In horror news that makes you go "hmm," apparently 2008's terrifying home invasion movie "The Strangers" is getting a remake. Deadline is reporting (via Fangoria) that a new "Strangers" movie is not only going to happen but that it's already in production. And while the idea of messing with such a heart-poundingly intense original film might raise a few eyebrows, plot details about the new film honestly don't sound like a direct remake so much as a continuation of the film's universe a la 2018's "The Strangers: Prey at Night."
The new version of "The Strangers" will apparently feature "Riverdale" star Madelaine Petsch, Aka Cheryl Blossom, which is an inspired bit of casting if you ask me. Petsch will star alongside "Teen Wolf" actor Froy Gutierrez and "The Kings of Summer" actor Gabriel Basso. The film has already set a director, too: Renny Harlin, who's helmed films as varying as...

As Bloody Disgusting recently told you, The Strangers franchise is coming back to life with a brand new trilogy of movies, and the official press release just went out this afternoon.
Lionsgate announced today it has begun production on The Strangers remake, set to be a trilogy of films being produced in Bratislava, Slovakia. Based on the original 2008 cult horror franchise of the same name, the project features rising star Madelaine Petsch (“Riverdale,” “Jane”), who drives cross-country with her longtime boyfriend to begin a new life in the Pacific Northwest. When their car breaks down in Venus, Oregon, they’re forced to spend the night in a secluded Airbnb, where they are terrorized from dusk till dawn by three masked strangers.
From there, the filmmakers are expanding the story in new and unexpected ways over three films. Additional cast includes Gabe Basso (Hillbilly Elegy). Renny Harlin (Cliffhanger, Deep Blue Sea,...

While cinemas worldwide have spent the better part of this year shuttered or operating at limited capacity, few film industries have felt the pain quite like Russia’s, which generates roughly 80% of its revenues from theatrical receipts, according to Evgenia Markova, head of the Russian film promotion body Roskino.
But while local profits have plummeted, Russian producers continue to find growing interest from foreign buyers, with Markova pointing to strong sales at Mipcom and at the Key Buyers Event, a virtual showcase for domestic productions that took place this summer.
“The Russian industry has learned to adapt to all the new circumstances,” she says. “It became more flexible, and more responsive to the needs of the global market.” A number of high-profile Russian projects will be introduced to foreign buyers during AFM, beginning with “Major Grom and the Plague Doctor,” a big-screen adaptation of the hit comic-book franchise from Bubble Comics.

Congrats! Production company Straight Up Films (of Transcendence, Jane Got a Gun) will be adapting the nonfiction bestseller Dead Mountain: The Untold True Story Of The Dyatlov Pass Incident by Donnie Eichar, and they've picked up the rights to turn it into a feature film. Attached to write the script is Brandon Lee Tenney, a name you may recognize as he wrote for this site for many years. Brandon is a friend of mine and wrote many articles and reviews for us (find his posts here) before transitioning into a screenwriting career. This is his first major deal as a screenwriter and I'm proud to be able to post this news. Tenney is adapting the book Dead Mountain, which has become a bestseller since its initial release in late 2013. It tells the true story from the 1950s of nine experienced hikers in the Russian Ural Mountains who were found mysteriously dead.

Straight Up Films is developing a film based on Donnie Eichar's book "Dead Mountain" which Brandon Lee Tenney has been hired to adapt for the screen.
The story deals with Eichar's five-year probe into the unsolved 1959 deaths of nine experienced hikers in Russia's Ural Mountains - an event also known as the "Dyatlov Pass incident".
Soviet investigators had found that the hikers had torn open their tents and run barefoot out into the snow on a night in February, saying an 'unknown compelling force' had caused the deaths.
Access to the region was subsequently blocked for hikers and adventurers for three years, whilst there has been decades of speculation. Theories range from failed Soviet military experiment to even an alien attack.
"Transcendence" producers Kate Cohen and Marisa Polvino are teaming with Casey Carroll to produce the film. The story was previously the subject of the 2013 film "Devil's Pass" which IFC released in the U.

British tabloid The Sun reported the news and says Atkinson apparently auditioned for the show recently and is "waiting to hear whether she has been cast" in the role of 24-year-old Kara Zor-El.
Greg Berlanti ("Arrow," "The Flash") is producing the series which sports two female leads, the other being Kara's secret government agent foster sister Alex.
Claire Holt ("The Vampire Diaries") was previously rumored for the role, though her name was quickly dismissed due to her commitments to both "The Originals" and "Aquarius".

The Dyatlov Pass incident sounds like the concept for a pretty fantastic horror movie, but unfortunately it isn't. The grim reality is that on Feb. 2 1959, nine college students hiked up the slopes of the Russian Ural Mountains but never made it out alive. That, of course, is tragic enough. What's more unsettling is that the students’ bodies were found scattered across the campsite in three distinct groups, some partially naked and with injuries including: crushed ribs, a fractured skull, and one hiker whose eyes had been gouged out and tongue removed. Not exactly the stuff you expect from, say, exposure to the elements. No one has been able to fully explain this horrific scene, but now Discovery Channel and explorer Mike Libecki are giving it a shot with a two-hour special called "Russian Yeti: The Killer Lives" (airing Sun. June 1 at 9:00 p.m.) Okay, we may have lost you at "yeti,...

Found footage films get a bad rap - and worse reviews. But the genre combines the vitality of punk rock with the reach of a video viral, and it has earned, if not respectability, then at least a respectful reappraisal. Some found footage (hereafter Ff) films are, admittedly, unwatchable (see The Devil Inside or, better, don't). But others, such as recent West Country-set religious chiller The Borderlands, or Bobcat Goldthwait's creepy Bigfoot hunt Willow Creek (out on May 2), are closer to unmissable.
Beyond an ominous title card, Ff films require little backstory, and the genre has only a brief history of its own. An uncompromising, hand-over-the-camera-lens look at totalitarianism in Vietnam-era America, Peter Watkins' 1971 mock-doc Punishment Park is considered Ff's chief forebear. Ruggiero Deodato's still-troubling Cannibal Holocaust (1979), however, is the most striking early archetype. Following a gonzo film crew into tribal Amazonia, it puts video-nasty atrocities through a film-school filter,...

Renny Harlin could use a boost. While he scored some decent notices for icy horror The Dyatlov Pass Incident last year, both critics and filmgoers have greeted this year’s The Legend Of Hercules with ambivalence. Undeterred, he’s pushing on into one his favourite playgrounds, the crime action thriller, with Fallen Cross.David Christopher O’Neill wrote the script, which follows a reformed mafia enforcer named Timothy Cole. As you might expect given his situation, life isn’t easy. Having ditched working for the crime syndicate he once served – the Chicago Cross – he’s languishing in prison and trying to put his past behind him.But then members of the Cross start to threaten his family, so our hero must find a way to break out of jail and track down the criminals before they can kill his children. And that means picking up his old, murderous ways…“Fallen Cross is a thrilling,...

From faked lunar landings to invisible WWII warships, here are six conspiracy theories and the genre films they inspired...
"Fluoridation is the most monstrously conceived and dangerous communist plot we have ever had to face," Sterling Hayden's General Jack D Ripper coldly announces in Stanley Kubrick's breathtakingly funny satire, Dr Strangelove.
Ripper's conspiracy theory, that the commies are secretly trying to compromise our "precious bodily fluids", becomes his harebrained reason for unleashing a missile strike on the Ussr. And just as Ripper was inspired by this strange notion to trigger a nuclear apocalypse, so filmmakers have been inspired by conspiracy theories to make all kinds of science fiction and horror movies - some funny, some tense and absorbing, others terrifying.
Here, then, is a selection of six real-world conspiracy theories and the varied movies they inspired - and funnily enough, Stanley Kubrick...

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by IFC Films. Director: Renny Harlin. Writer: Vikram Weet. Cast: Holly Goss, Matt Stokoe, Luke Albright, Ryan Hawley and Gemma Atkinson. The Devil's Pass aka The Dyatlov Pass Incident is a found footage film from director Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2). This title takes on a non-fiction event, the death of nine Russian hikers, and turns it into fiction, with the introduction of time travel. Five American characters and documentarians grate on the nerves, while the film struggles to build speed and tension. The Devil's Pass is just another average found footage film, in this overcrowded sub-genre. The story begins with five American university students. They are all really excited! to travel to the Ural Mountains, in Russia. Here, they hope to unravel a fifty year old mystery: the death of nine experienced hikers. These hikers were found mostly naked,...

What's It About? This little Texan indie is part romance and part dramatic thriller. Casey Affleck, Rooney Mara, and Ben Foster headline this top-notch cast about a man on the run, the woman he loves, and the sheriff who tries to get between them. (Not in a romantic way, just, you know, because he's a man of the law and Affleck's character broke out of jail.)

Summit has acquired Hercules: The Legend Begins from Millennium Films which stars Kellan Lutz, and has set the film's release date for , February 7th, 2014, reports Deadline. This puts it ahead of Dwayne Johnson starrer Hercules from Paramount Pictures which opens July 25th, 2014. Also on board the cast of The Legend Begins are Scott Adkins, Johnathon Schaech, Liam Garrigan, Roxanne McKee and Rade Serbedzija. Let's be honest here, quality-wise, there's just no way you would be able to compare this film with Paramount's release, with a far better caliber of actors, and director, which opens as a summer tentpole, and should easily top the charts on its debut. Renny Harlin (Devil's Pass) directs and also wrote the screenplay alongside Sean Hood, Giulio Steve and Daniel Giat. The headlines and articles back in summer 1999 said that the film had changed cinema forever. They made extravagant claims that the internet had now been used to such a degree that the marketing and distribution of films would never be the same again. This may have been premature, what these journalists didn’t quite grasp was that the majority of citizens with a connection to the internet were still on slow dial-up connections, and this made watching trailers or downloading porn a lengthy night’s chore at best.

Not many of us would shoot a film in the Russian mountains. Particularly when learning the director is Renny Harlin, the Finnish daredevil director behind such “that looked tough to make” action epics as Cliffhanger and Deep Blue Sea. But, British actresses Gemma Atkinson and Holly Goss like a challenge and can be seen in Harlin’s “Blair Witch on ice” horror The Dyatlov Pass Incident.

Nb: This article contains spoilers.
There’s a moment in one of comedian Simon Amstell’s stand up shows where he recounts a conversation he once had with the executive producer of Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks. Trading on the commonly held opinion that Hollyoaks is “rubbish”, Amstell enquired as to why the producer didn’t try to make it better. The answer came that they did make it better, but people stopped watching.
Even by the not-so-great standards that soaps are measured, Hollyoaks has always been firmly towards the bottom of the ladder. The fictional Chester suburb where the majority of inhabitants are extraordinarily good looking but also extraordinarily stupid has been identified by its often wildly outlandish storylines and impossibly pretty people.

This year’s FrightFest took place at the usual haunt of Leicester Square’s Empire between Thursday, August 22nd and Monday, August 26th, as thousands of bloodthirsty horror fans descended to get their annual fill of the goriest, most terrifying and uproarious thrills in town.
As with any year at the fest, the regular bases are covered, with every sort of horror being catered for – there’s psychological thrills, comic horror, flat-out gore-fests, foreign films, Hollywood blockbusters and so on.
I caught 27 films at this year’s fest, and we’ll get started with the Thursday night closing film, You’re Next…

Having languished around on the festival circuit for almost two years, the latest effort from Adam Wingard (A Horrible Way To Die) has certainly had quite a journey coming to theatres, one that is (mostly) worth the wait.

The Dyatlov Pass Incident
Written by Vikram Weet
Directed by Renny Harlin
USA, 2013
The contest between scepticism and belief in the supernatural is a reliable means of drawing out a narrative before any sort of big reveal. It’s a dynamic through which the television classic The X-Files operated, featuring the passionate Fox Mulder, who worked to convince cohort Dana Scully of “the truth.” Around this back-and-forth between two audience surrogates situates the dubious involvement of man: how much do the higher-ups truly know about what is going on, and what are they keeping from us?
Renny Harlin’s The Dyatlov Pass Incident borrows a few of these tricks. Its fictional found-footage accompanies a group of five American hikers into the Ural Mountains as they retrace the steps of nine souls who died in mysterious, real-life circumstances some 50 years ago. Hypothermia, avalanches, and other possible causes of death have since been ruled out,...

What began as a clever idea cooked up by filmmakers with more ingenuity than production money has now become a low-budget playground for filmmakers of every race, creed, nationality, and age bracket. We're talking (once again) about "found footage" horror cinema, that recently omnipresent filmmaking presentation that asks the viewer to "buy" that they're watching actual video material.
Although largely the domain of independents both American (The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity, Grave Encounters) and imported (Troll Hunter, [Rec], Lake Mungo), the "found footage" hook has also enticed filmmakers as varied as Matt Reeves (Cloverfield), George Romero (Diary of the Dead), and Barry Levinson (The Bay). So clearly there's something about the gimmick that appeals to filmmakers and film watchers in equal measure, and now we have another veteran ready to take a swing at the format.

The new film from director Renny Harlin, The Dyatlov Pass Incident, is getting its UK premiere at Frightfest this weekend, ahead of its DVD and Blu-ray release in the UK next week. The movie is based on a real life disaster from 1959, where nine Russian hikers were discovered, dead, in the Ural Mountains. Their mysterious deaths were never explained, but there were no shortage of theories.
Said theories inspire a bunch of American students in the movie, as they set out to make a documentary to try and find out what really happened all those years again. This takes Renny Harlin back to snowy mountains again, the kind he explored 20 years ago in the Sylvester Stallone blockbuster, Cliffhanger. And it uses the found footage...

The Dyatlov Pass Incident is the name given to a real life disaster, occurring in 1959, in which nine Russian hikers were found dead in the Ural Mountains. The peculiarities of their deaths, which remain unexplained, have made the story a hit amongst conspiracy theorists, whose theories range from the Yeti monster to a Russian Military wipeout.
Renny Harlin’s The Dyatlov Pass Incident follows five American students making a (fictional) documentary on the incident, in which they will film their own journey retracing the steps of the fateful nine to discover, and film, what really happened. Bringing together filmmakers Holly (Holly Goss), Jenson (Matt Stokoe) and Denise (Gemma Atkinson), with experienced mountaineers Jp (Luke Albright) and Andy (Ryan Hawley), they set off for the affectionately named, ‘Mountain of the Dead’.

Hollywood is a tough town, and nobody knows that better than Renny Harlin. The Finnish director was on top of the world in the early nineties when he helmed blockbuster action films like Cliffhanger and Die Hard 2, but one of cinema's most notorious box-office bombs — his 1995 pirate flick Cutthroat Island, which cost a then-incredible $100 million and only made $10 million of it back — proved difficult for Harlin to recover from. "It was pretty incredible in the beginning, and then it sort of leveled out with some success and some disappointments," admits Harlin, who's spent the last decade directing television and low-budget films like The Covenant and 12 Rounds. "But I must say that now, I feel like it's springtime for me again." The 54-year-old director has a new movie coming out this week, the found-footage thriller Devil's Pass (you can watch an exclusive clip below),...

This bank holiday weekend, Empire Leicester Square is once again haunted by the annual Film4 Frightfest. Five days, three screens and a few dozen premieres, debuts, sequels and rereleases – there should be plenty to keep horror aficionados safe from the holiday sunshine.
It all kicks off with Thursday night’s premiere of The Dead 2: India, Howard & Jon Ford’s follow-up to the critically acclaimed original which screened at Frightfest 2010. As the title suggests, the zombie outbreak has bestowed itself upon India, so expect to see hero Nicholas Burton trek across some striking landscapes, albeit tailed by a zombie horde.
There are many more sequels on offer, including the return of one infamous killer doll in Curse of Chucky; V/H/S 2, a follow-up to last year’s most popular horror portmanteau; and I Spit on Your Grave 2, the sequel to a remake that left a bad taste in many a mouth.

Kick-Ass 2 (15)
(Jeff Wadlow, 2013, Us/UK) Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloë Moretz, Jim Carrey, 103 mins
The amateur Avengers return, though the sequel finds them weighed down by their superhero lifestyles, or is it audience expectations? The ingredients that made the first movie such a pleasure are all here – absurd alter-egos, ultraviolence, high-school angst, swearing – just minus the element of surprise. As a result, this incident-packed story struggles to recapture that balance between comic-book zaniness and real-world teen comedy.
2 Guns (15)
(Baltasar Kormákur, 2013, Us) Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg, Paula Patton. 109 mins
Two double-crossed undercover agents must unravel a convoluted conspiracy (and learn to get along, of course) in what could almost be a Lethal Weapon reboot. Washington and Wahlberg spark off each other nicely, which is all that's needed.

Finnish director Renny Harlin, the maker of Die Hard 2 and The Long Kiss Goodnight, has now decided to tackle one of the eeriest mysteries in Russian history. Here he explains why
'Oh, you'll have fun with Renny," says his assistant as I'm ushered into his office in Venice, Los Angeles, three blocks from where Orson Welles filmed the opening sequence of Touch of Evil. "He's been doing his homework on you."
My mind fills with horrifying possibilities, recalling how Don Simpson would have a journalist's credit rating, divorce papers, and even criminal record to hand for an interview. But Finland's most successful director simply appears before me with a grin and says: "Hello, John, I very much enjoyed your – " and he quotes something I wrote a month back. "I laughed all day!" he adds.

Last time Renny Harlin headed for snow-capped mountains it was to shoot people and blow shit up in the sort-of classic Sylvester Stallone vehicle Cliffhanger. His latest climbing trip is less heavy on the bombast, trading it for found-footage mystery and mad conspiracy theories. In the Us it's been re-named Devil's Pass, but here in the UK it's still going by its original moniker The Dyatlov Pass Incident. Slight warning: the film works best if you go into it completely blind, so while there aren't really spoilers in the trailer, you might want to skip it anyway. This is all, as the clip says, based on actual events. The real incident took place in 1959, when nine hikers on a skiing trip in the Russian Ural mountains were killed in extremely odd circumstances. There were no survivors to explain why, in temperatures around −30°C, the group apparently tore open their tent from the inside,...

Check out the first trailer for “Die Hard 2″ director Renny Harlin’s new Found Footage horror flick “Devil’s Pass”, also known as “The Dyatlov Pass Incident” in the UK and other parts abroad. Horny college students, snowy mountains, and freakish looking creatures underground. What could possibly go wrong? Lots, as it turns out. I am not, of course, the biggest fan of Found Footage filmmaking, but when it’s done right, I’m not totally against it. Curiosity piqued? Check out our very own James Mudge’s review of the film here. He liked it. Based on a true story that to this day remains shrouded in mystery, “The Dyatlov Pass Incident” takes the known facts of the tragedy and spins them into a truly chilling horror experience that brilliantly combines elements of contemporary history, conspiracy theory, sci-fi and the supernatural that all contribute to a knock-out twist and a breathtaking finale.

Renny Harlin's found footage horror tale "The Dyatlov Pass Incident" has scored a new title and North American release date though IFC Midnight.
Now called "Devil’s Pass," the film takes elements from the real life mysterious disappearance of nine experienced ski hikers in the Ural mountains in 1959. Weeks later, the bodies started being located - and no-one is quite sure what happened.
The film's actual story though follows a group of modern-day characters that set out to retrace the path of the original hikers in an effort to figure out the mystery.
IFC Midnight have set an August 23rd VOD and limited theatrical release. They've also released a new trailer which you can watch below:...
