10. James Arness (1923–2011)
James Arness is primarily recognized for his iconic portrayal of Marshal Matt Dillon in the long-running prime-time Western TV show Gunsmoke.
From 1955 to 1975, Arness entertained the audience by keeping the peace in Dodge City, but he also starred in legendary movies like Them!, Hondo, The Farmer's Daughter, and others.
9. Lee Marvin (1924–1987)
Famous for his tough and brutal character, Lee Marvin was just as masculine off-screen as he was in his movies. He blew up after portraying Kid Shelleen in Cat Ballou and went on to star in other iconic Western movies, including The Dirty Dozen, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Big Red One, and many others.
8. Sam Elliott (1944–Now)
Sharp and rugged, Sam Elliot was born to portray gruffly cowboys with a no-bs attitude. His iconic mustache broke many hearts, and the actor didn’t become less popular after Westerns died off: since his famous Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,...

Powerful roles and memorable lines have been the hallmark of Clint Eastwood’s career. Cops, cowboys drifters, soldiers and, generally bad ass men’s men … he’s played them all.
The lines that stick with you? Dirty Harry: “You’ve got to ask yourself a question: ‘Do you feel lucky?’ Well, do ya, punk.” Josey Wales: “When I get to likin’ someone, they ain’t around long.” Bill Munny in Unforgiven: “It’s a hell of a thing, killin’ a man. Take away all he’s got, and all he’s ever gonna have.” And perhaps the most quoted of all, Harry Callahan in Sudden Impact: “Go ahead, make my day.”
Eastwood has a cop for so long he should be collecting a pension. He joined the force with Dirty Harry in 1971 and his last movie as a cop was A Perfect World in (1993). He made five...

Actor Morgan Freeman is known as the forever wise old man of Hollywood. The actor has played roles in Bruce Almighty, Shawshank Redemption, Se7en, and Now You See Me. The actor has worked with acclaimed directors in his six-decade-long career, including filmmakers such as Christopher Nolan, Clint Eastwood, and Steven Spielberg.
Due to his sprawling career, the actor has been able to observe each director’s style and process. The actor mentioned that he sees similarities in the way directors Christopher Nolan and Clint Eastwood work, as both are taskmasters who quickly get through shoots. He mentioned that Nolan and Eastwood also shared disdain for multiple takes.

In 1971, Clint Eastwood's Harry Callahan saved San Francisco from a theatrical serial killer while simultaneously establishing the "loose canon" genre of cop movies. "Dirty Harry" saw Andrew Robinson's Scorpio Killer sniping innocent Franciscans before he's taken down by Eastwood's lone wolf cop, in a film that caused significant controversy upon its release with many critics accusing it of being fascist propaganda. As time has gone on, the prevailing view of the film has become much more favorable, and "Dirty Harry" is now considered easily one of the best films of the 1970s, and even 21st century as a whole.
That's a good thing, because despite the fact that Eastwood's cavalier inspector appears to be a walking endorsement of police brutality and extreme right-wing values, the movie as a whole should leave any discerning viewer conflicted and reflective. After all, director Don Siegel obviously went to great lengths...

There’ll be some happy holidays on Prime Video in December, as the streamer’s seasonal offerings hope to keep the fires warm in your home this month!
As such, there are quite a few new original holiday movies coming to the service. At the beginning of the month, Eddie Murphy stars in Candy Cane Lane. In this film, the Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America star plays a determined man who is willing to go above and beyond to win the annual Christmas home decoration contest in his neighborhood – even if it means making a very magical deal.
The DC universe will also be getting festive in December thanks to Merry Little Batman, an animated feature that sees Batman’s son, Damian Wayne, stumble upon a villainous plot on Christmas eve, one that may give him a chance to save the day when his dad isn’t around.

Actor Clint Eastwood has starred in a variety of movies, but was once mostly known for action films like Dirty Harry. Still, the filmmaker wasn’t afraid of branching out in his younger years. But when he did a film that was too unlike his typical work, his inner circle panicked.
Everyone thought Clint Eastwood was making a big mistake doing this feature Clint Eastwood | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
After building his reputation as an action star, Eastwood wanted to experiment with other genres. To do this, he began eyeing the feature Every Which Way but Loose. The 1978 movie was a huge departure from Eastwood’s usual work. The veteran actor played a trucker and part-time fighter with a pet orangutan named Clyde. Although it had action elements, it functioned heavily as a comedy, targeting a much younger audience than Eastwood’s films were used to.

Martin Scorsese is drawing raves for his latest film, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and the nearly 81-year-old is not the only Hollywood veteran who’s still making movies.
Ridley Scott, who turns 86 in November, has “Napoleon” out that same month while Clint Eastwood and Francis Ford Coppola both have new films in the works.
Here are 15 directors over 80 who are still busy making movies.

As (in)famous as Clint Eastwood is for playing reticent gun-slingers and starring in violent conservative fantasies, he's spent nearly as much of his career making films that warn against the dangers of machismo and letting your sons grow up to be cowboys. His 2021 directorial effort, "Cry Macho," is a chip off the same block. Eastwood stars in the '80s-set drama as Mike Milo, a former rodeo star who agrees to deliver a teen boy named Rafo (Eduardo Minett) from Mexico City to his father in Texas. Along the way, Mike tries to dissuade Rafo of the notion that acting "macho" is any way to go through life. "Macho" is also the name of Rafo's rooster, who tags along with the duo. I'm betting you never expected an Eastwood film to share a plot point with Disney's "Moana," did you?
The general response to "Cry Macho" was polite if decidedly lukewarm.

Move over, "Jury Duty," there's another twist-filled jury story in town. This time it's "Juror No. 2," the upcoming movie from veteran filmmaker Clint Eastwood. Eastwood is in his 90s now, but age hasn't stopped the prolific actor-turned-filmmaker from working on new stories to bring to the silver screen. Though the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike means "Juror No. 2" has currently suspended filming, the Eastwood picture is still in the works -- and it sounds like it has the potential to be one of the most riveting movies he's made in a while.
When it comes to Eastwood the director, your mileage may vary. The nonagenarian star has certainly made some fantastic projects in his impressive lifetime, from Oscar winners "Unforgiven" and "Million Dollar Baby" to "Mystic River" and "The Bridges of Madison County." His most recent projects, though, including 2021's "Cry Macho" and "Richard Jewell," weren't wholeheartedly embraced by critics and audiences.

Everyone’s gone to the festivals. But here on the home front, one thing still leads to another.
Last Saturday, I picked up a slightly tattered copy of an old crime biography, Frank Costello: Prime Minister of the Underworld, at one of those sidewalk libraries.
Published in 1974, the year after mob boss Costello died at the age of 82, the book was written by his long-time lawyer George Wolf with co-writer Joseph Dimona.
As lawyer books go, it wasn’t bad. Lots of first-hand anecdotes. Not too much ax-grinding. And a reasonably clear re-telling of an oft-told saga about what they used to call “The Syndicate,” from tawdry roots in New York’s Italian ghettos, through the Italo-Jewish alliance of bootlegging gangs, to political machinations, over-throw of the old Sicilian crime lords, Murder Inc., Bugsy Siegel, Las Vegas, the Kefauver hearings and beyond.

Actor Clint Eastwood has worked with a variety of filmmakers during his years in the film industry. In his experience, there was one filmmaking habit he could barely tolerate from other directors.
It might have also showed Eastwood what not to do when he indulged in a career behind the camera.

With its list of new releases for July 2023, Prime Video is going to help you stay safe from the oppressive July sun.
Highlighting the Amazon Originals on the TV side this month are two heavy hitters. The first is The Horror of Dolores Roach on July 7. Based on a podcast of the same name, this series could best be described as a modern day Sweeney Todd? Why, you ask? Well you know why. Think about it. Then season 2 of Neil Gaiman adaptation Good Omens premieres on July 28. This season will follow angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tenant) as they seek to keep the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) away from both heaven and hell.
There aren’t any Amazon Original movies of note this month and that’s alright as the influx of library titles is more than enough. July 1 sees the arrival of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, No Country for Old Men,...

Prime Video has adapted the one-woman podcast “Empanada Loca” into a new series. “The Horror of Dolores Roach” will begin streaming on the service on July 7. Buckle up, because this one is gruesome. Roach (Justina Machado) returns to a gentrified Washington Heights after a long prison sentence and works as a masseuse in the basement of a friend’s empanada shop. But when her security is threatened, Roach is driven to extremes to survive.

Season 2 of “Good Omens” also will premiere on Prime Video in July. Arriving July 28, the series focuses on the friendship between Aziraphale (Michael Sheen), a fussy angel and rare-book dealer, and the snarky demon Crowley (David Tennant). While the Apocalypse has been averted, the pair are back living their lives in London, until the archangel Gabriel shows up. The series is based on the novel by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.

While much of Hollywood’s top brass couldn’t care less about the craft of filmmaking and preservation of the very medium that is responsible for their positions in the first place, few executives have become so widely, unanimously despised so immediately as David Zaslav. With a sole focus on profits, the Warner Bros. Discovery CEO has gutted both his streaming libraries and canceled films that were near-completion, while also denigrating his flagship HBO brand in the unveiling of Max, a streaming service that gives more prominence to Naked and Afraid and Dr. Pimple Popper than TCM and Studio Ghibli. He even lambasted his execs for financially supporting Clint Eastwood––a director who has delivered numerous hits for WB––simply because Cry Macho wasn’t profitable.

Clint Eastwood, the actor-turned-director and producer, has had one of the longest and most varied careers of anyone working in the entertainment world. In addition to his film work he has also amassed an impressive resume as a musician and composer and even served as the mayor of the California town Carmel-by-the-Sea during the 1980s.
Eastwood began his film career in westerns and later also found success in crime dramas. He was mostly known for his striking good looks and stoic demeanor though and was not really considered a serious or talented actor. He would slowly work to change that fact and would eventually receive two Oscar nominations for his acting, both as Best Actor for “Unforgiven” in 1992 and “Million Dollar Baby” in 2004. While he didn’t win either of those acting awards, he would win two Oscars for each of those films as Best Director and as a producer...

Goodbye HBO Max, hello Max. Warner Bros. Discovery announced several weeks back that the company was dropping the "HBO" from the name of its flagship streaming service, and that day has come. What does that mean for you, the subscriber? For one, it means a lot more movies and TV shows will be streaming in 4K, and the list of initial titles is pretty impressive. Per the studio’s official logline, Juror No. 2 follows family man Justin Kemp (Hoult) who, while serving as a juror in a high-profile murder trial, finds himself struggling with a serious moral dilemma … one he could use to sway the jury verdict and potentially convict — or free — the wrong killer.
Sutherland will play Hoult’s sponsor at Alcoholics Anonymous.
Collette is playing the prosecutor, while Deutch will play Hoult’s wife.
Jonathan Abrams wrote the script, which had been floating around Hollywood for 15 years before Eastwood decided last year that he wanted to make it his follow-up to Cry Macho.

Clint Eastwood had at last achieved film stardom in the United States when Sergio Leone's "Dollars Trilogy" was meted out to theaters over the course of 1967 and '68. The films were hits internationally, but had been held back from U.S. theaters because distributors were concerned Akira Kurosawa and Toho might sue them due to 1964's "A Fistful of Dollars," the first movie in the trilogy, bearing a remarkable similarity to the Japanese director's masterpiece "Yojimbo" (which was itself an unofficial adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's "Red Harvest"). Toho did sue, but the success of the second and third films, which were top-down originals, more than offset what they lost over the first movie.

Before Clint Eastwood sunsets his career as a director, he’s prepping a last hoorah at Warner Bros to go out with a bang. The 92-year-old filmmaker, who directed Gran Torino, Sully, The Bridges of Madison Country, and more, is prepping Juror No. 2, a legal drama featuring two of Hollywood’s hottest stars. After an exhaustive, months-long process to find the right combination of actors, Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette will join the cast.
Clint Eastwood directs from a script by Jonathan Abrams, with a story during a murder trial. When one of the jurors (Hoult) seeks to protect the defendant without putting himself in jeopardy, he progressively realizes he may have caused the victim’s death in a careless driving accident. Clint Eastwood was already a notable movie star before directing his first film, "Play Misty for Me" in 1971. In 2021, Eastwood helmed his 40th film as a director, the gentle rescue movie "Cry Macho," in which he also starred. Eastwood would be a Hollywood legend even if he had never chosen to get into acting. Perhaps dismaying to the man's many fans, Eastwood recently announced that he will direct one final film before retiring for good. Eastwood's final film will be distributed by Warner Bros., the studio that has handled the director's entire filmography since "Gran Torino" in 2008. Eastwood's retirement is likely due to his age — he will be 93 in May — although one might hear the words of Warner Bros./Discovery CEO David Zaslav ringing in their ears when he was reported to say that he owes no filmmaker any favors and that Eastwood's films all tend to lose money.

Clint Eastwood is turning 93 this year, but the four-time Oscar winner isn’t slowing down. The “Unforgiven” and “Million Dollar Baby” director has set his 40th feature film, “Juror #2,” IndieWire has confirmed.
Warner Bros., which has distributed all of Eastwood’s films since 2008’s “Gran Torino,” will re-team with the director for the thriller, a source confirmed to IndieWire. In addition, a source confirmed that offers have been sent to Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette to star in the picture, though neither deal is final.
Set in the courtroom of a murder trial, “Juror #2” focuses on one of the jurors as he realizes during the case that he killed the victim in a driving accident, and desperately attempts to get the defendant off without going to jail himself. Deadline reports that should they be cast, Hoult would play the juror, while Collette will play prosecuting attorney in the trial.

Clint Eastwood has enjoyed a career which has spanned seven decades, but as the Hollywood legend is quickly approaching his 93rd birthday, the day of his final movie is closer than we may want.
According to Discussing Film, Clint Eastwood is preparing to direct what is being “internally billed” as the final movie of his long career. The project is a legal thriller currently titled Juror #2, which is said to follow “a juror on a murder trial who realizes that he may have caused the victim’s death and must grapple with the dilemma of whether to manipulate the jury to save himself, or reveal the truth and turn himself in.” Eastwood is also said to be eyeing a young Hollywood star for the leading role. As Eastwood hasn’t personally said anything about retiring, there’s always a chance that he might have another movie in him after this one.

Clint Eastwood is ready for one last ride: Per DiscussingFilm, the legendary actor and director has started to “close in on” what’s being billed internally as the final film of his career.
According to the report, Eastwood will once again be working with Warner Bros. to direct his follow-up to the 2021 neo-Western Cry Macho, in which he also starred. The movie is said to be a thriller with the working title Juror #2 centering around — you guessed it — a juror on a murder trial who “realizes that he may have caused the victim’s death and must grapple with the dilemma of whether to manipulate the jury to save himself, or reveal the truth and turn himself in.”
Though the film doesn’t have a starting date as of yet, Eastwood is apparently “eyeing a young Hollywood star” with a lead role in “a big film releasing within the next few months.

It would be difficult to understate just how enormous "Rawhide" was when it debuted in 1959. Directories of TV ratings at the time revealed that "Rawhide" remained in the top 30 most-watched TV shows from its start through its fifth season, peaking at number 6 in its third. The show ran for eight years, and its theme song — performed by Frankie Laine — has been branded into the brains of anyone who has heard it. "Keep them doggies movin'" will cause many to break into song. Notably, one of the lyrics was "Don't try to understand 'em. Just rope an' throw an' brand 'em. Soon we'll be living high and wide." For those weaned on reruns in the 1980s, "Rawhide" was often discussed in hushed tones by the older generations.
"Rawhide" followed the many adventures of cattle ranchers in the Old West. It was a working-class show about the salt-of-the-earth cowboys that formed the American foundation.

"A Christmas Story" is a staple of the holiday season, with annual 24-hour marathons on TBS and TNT. This year we have double the Ralphie fun because a sequel, "A Christmas Story Christmas," is streaming on HBO Max. Not only that, but Peter Billingsley, who played Ralphie, and his Wild West Picture Show Productions partner Vince Vaughn, have started a new video podcast called "A Cinematic Christmas Journey." The first episode is about "A Christmas Story," and we're getting some fun tales from the set.
It's hosted by Billingsley and Nick Schenk, the screenwriter for the Clint Eastwood films "Gran Torino," "Cry Macho," and "The Mule," as well as the new sequel "A Christmas Story Christmas." For this episode, Schenk and Billingsley welcome Ian Petrella, who played Ralphie's little brother Randy, R.D. Robb, who played Schwartz, and Scott Schwartz, who played Flick. There are stories about the cursing Ralphie did and where it came from,...

Clint Eastwood rose to stardom in the 1960s by employing a minimalist style of acting as Sergio Leone's Man with No Name in "A Fistful of Dollars," "For a Few Dollars More," and "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly." His characters were men of few words and even fewer expressions. Some critics at the time mistook this as a laughable lack of range on Eastwood's part -- an assertion the actor would prove incorrect with shockingly vulnerable performances in "Play Misty for Me" and "The Beguiled."
But while Eastwood was not precious with his image, he was keenly aware of what he could not, or should not, do. He could play blustery types like John Wilson (based on director John Huston) in "White Hunter Black Heart," but he knew not to emote. He could tweak his on-screen persona, but he almost never went broad.

Clint Eastwood's vast filmography is filled with classics, but some films in his history of work could be considered low-effort misses. While the director has shown his impressive skills in films like "Million Dollar Baby" — which won him an academy award for directing — there are also films like "Cry Macho," which feel much less revelatory and groundbreaking than some of his other work. While I wouldn't necessarily call the legendary actor and director "hit or miss," there's always a chance for any filmmaker to make a misfire, whether the story isn't compelling or some other bump in production lessens the film's quality.
David Peoples, who wrote the script for "Unforgiven," felt a level of uncertainty about Eastwood's adaptation of his story. Originally titled "The William Munny Killings" when Peoples first wrote it, the screenwriter already had scripts such as "Blade Runner" and "The Day After Trinity" under his belt.

Perhaps you've watched the 1983 film "A Christmas Story" over and over again. It would be no surprise. It's often on a loop on Christmas Day. Heck, it might have been on enough in the background of your holiday celebrations that you've seen it more than "Star Wars." From the leg lamp that graces so many of our windows around the holidays, to the terrifying store Santa Claus, to saying, "You'll shoot your eye out" in reference to a rather dangerous Christmas toy, you've definitely heard of it. Today we have a new trailer for the sequel from Warner Bros. Pictures and HBO Max, "A Christmas Story Christmas," a name that could be a theme for many of our actual Christmases.
(Let's not dwell on the fact that there were a few other sequels, including "My Summer Story" in 1994, or the direct-to-dvd sequel that takes place six years after the original...
