On the face of it, Grégoire is the kind of husband that makes many a woman wish hers would shape up a bit. He’s tall, strong and stylish, with a job in banking that comfortably pays the bills, and the sculpted good looks of, well, the actor Melvil Poupaud — who plays him with enough upfront charm to cover a slight chill at the edges. All that, and he dotes on his wife Blanche (Virginie Efira), insisting on a degree of togetherness that makes clear his fidelity. Those observing more closely, however, may have other concerns: Why is he constantly calling her at work? Why does she never go out with friends? That he’s a psychotic abuser isn’t played as a surprise twist in Valérie Donzelli’s nervy, finely acted domestic thriller “Just the Two of Us” — even as it dabbles in genre tropes, the film presents an all-too-unremarkable reality for many women.

This Attack on Titan review contains spoilers.
Attack on Titan Season 4 Episode 6
“A life is a life”
Attack on Titan straddles many genres, but its premiere episode embraces horror tropes more than anything else. That first episode is scary, not just when the Titans first appear, but with the manner in which they terrorize Shiganshina District and devour so much of their population.
It’s a destabilizing and overwhelming experience and the beginning of “The War Hammer Titan” doesn’t only remember the anime’s horror roots, but it delivers carnage that’s even more frightening than what’s seen in Attack on Titan’s first episode. And Eren is the one that’s responsible. The immediate destruction that plays out from Eren’s Titan transformation is horrifying to witness. The fear of the community becomes so palpable that citizens trample over each other and claim more lives in an...

Intouchables storms the box office as critics hail it as a comedy masterpiece
It's the surprise French box office hit of the year: a caustic comedy about a quadriplegic aristocrat and his awkward, black home-help from one of Paris's poor, suburban high-rise ghettoes.
Intouchables – or the Untouchables – has confounded French critics who dreaded the possibility of a cliche-ridden, ham-fisted take on the poor suburban "banlieue", race and disability. Instead, the film has been hailed as a masterpiece, and the comedy of the year. It sold 2m tickets in under a week. Paris crowds are queueing around the block and pre-booking tickets. It is set to open in 40 countries, including the United States in March, where Harvey Weinstein has bought an option for an American remake.
"Is this the new Amélie?" asked the daily Liberation, comparing it to the whimsical French romantic comedy that captivated foreign audiences 10 years ago. Critics are...

When the teaser trailer for The Lady was released back in August I said that the combination of French director Luc Besson and the presence of Michelle Yeoh could make the film a surprise awards contender. It looks like at the age of 52, director Luc Besson is ready to move on from his testosteron- fueled action pics and crayon-outlined children's entertainment. He's ready to get a hug from the folks who give out golden statues, and to try and make that happen, he's delivering "The Lady." While it won't have a shot for Best Foreign Film--France has selected "Declaration of War" as their awards-season horse--the film will be making its way to theaters courtesy of Cohen Media Group and Europacorp in an Oscar-qualifying run later this year (with expansion in 2012), and at the very…...

Paddy Considine reveals Gary Oldman's influence on him, while tempers flare in Albania over its foreign-language Oscar submission
The Oldman and Paddy
Paddy Considine has confessed to the influence of Gary Oldman on his directing debut, Tyrannosaur. The new film, which stars Peter Mullan, Olivia Colman and Eddie Marsan, is based on Paddy's award-winning short film Dog Altogether, and has a searing, visceral quality of Brit grit, the like of which I haven't seen since Nil by Mouth – still the only film Oldman has directed. Despite being best known for his work with director Shane Meadows, Considine revealed to me that Oldman was the key to Tyrannosaur. "I remember seeing Nil by Mouth as a student in Brighton and being in awe. I felt that at last here was a guy who spoke my language. It's strange how life works, because I happened to be working with Gary on...

Yesterday, Montreal's Festival du nouveau cinéma (Fnc) revealed that while the French film La guerre est déclarée will open the event, it will be up to the Canadian film Monsieur Lazhar to close the Fnc.
The French film La guerre est déclarée will open on October 12 at the Imperial Movie Theatre. As for Monsieur Lazhar, it will be screened on October 23.
Directed by Valérie Donzelli, La guerre est déclarée is about a couple's struggle to save their child's life. Their child is diagnosed with cancer.
As for Philippe Falardeau's Monsieur Lazhar, its story is centred on an illegal Algerian immigrant (played by French comedian Fellag) who arrives in Montreal. That illegal immigrant accepts to replace an elementary school teacher.
Stay stuned, because the Fnc will unveil its complete line-up of films on September 27.
