You have probably heard the stories about Julia Ducournau’s new film Raw – people passing out in screenings, throwing up, walking out… But while such things may or may not have happened, one thing for sure is that the acclaimed filmmaker has produced a brilliantly original piece of cinema that mixed a coming-of-age tale with a dose of cannibalism, humour, and college hazing. We sat down with her recently to discuss the film and where the idea came from.
When we first caught a glimpse of the film at last year’s London Film Festival, we were drawn initially by the cannibalism elements, such is our love of the 70’s classics but what we found was something more – more daring, much funnier and more profound. Ducournau knows many people may be put off by such things but explained that she wanted to bring the humanity back to the taboo subject,...

Julia Ducournau never asked for this. When the now-33-year-old French writer-director was plotting out her feature debut, she wanted to make a movie that spoke frankly about a woman's place in the world. "Female bodies portrayed on our screens and in our society [are] always either sexualized to please men or glamorized to set expectations for women," she says, her voice quickening on the phone. "No one can relate to that — we are only building up fantasies about the female body.
"I wanted to present another option," Ducournau adds. "A body that sweats,...

Exclusive: Slate also includes new films by Alain Guiraudie and Raymond Depardon.
Wild Bunch will launch a new biopic of legendary sculptor Auguste Rodin at Unifrance’s January event Rendez-vous with French Cinema in Paris.
Vincent Lindon (The Measure Of A Man) will star in the film entitled Rodin, which will shoot in 2016 for a 2017 release to coincide with the centenary of the sculptor’s death in November 1917.
French director Jacques Doillon (Love Battles) will direct from his own screenplay.
It is Lindon’s first major role since his Palme d’Or-winning performance in social drama The Measure Of A Man at Cannes last May.
Casting is currently underway for the role of Rodin’s tragic collaborator and lover Camille Claudel and his long-suffering, life-long companion Rose Beuret.
The picture will start as Rodin turns 40 and enters one of the most productive periods of his artistic career in which he created works such as The Thinker and The...
