“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” topped the box office in South Korea over the May Day weekend, beating a handful of minor local titles which released in hope of catching a rising market.
The latest Friday-Sunday period appeared to represent a turning point – a 4.86 million nationwide aggregate was the biggest weekend haul since January – but a slow and uncertain one.
Theatrical box office in Korea has been severely depressed all year due to government-imposed Covid restrictions, audience caution and a paucity of new release local titles. Restrictions in cinemas are now being removed and locally-produced films are dusting off their release plans. But to remains to be seen how much long-term structural damage has been done to the film industry in Korea. A spokesman for cinema chain Cj-cgv told local media that removing restrictions on consumption of food and drink in cinemas has had an immediate, positive effect on ticket sales.

Cinemas in South Korea received the good news last week that anti-covid measures, including reduced seating capacity and bans on consumption of food and drink, were to end. But audiences reacted gingerly.
“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” led the box office for a second weekend with 1.63 million, a drop of 44 from its opening weekend, and a 12-day cumulative of 6.55 million. Its three-day score represented 42 of the total weekend market and was more than 1 million more than the second placed film. It pointed to a continuation of a market that is hit driven and propelled by specific titles, rather than a mass return to cinemas.
The nationwide aggregate for the weekend was 3.89 million, down on the previous weekend’s 4.07 million, and still within a deeply depressed range that has persisted through all of February and March.

Festival titles ‘Happening’ and ‘Playground’ are also new this week.
It is a fairly quiet week for openers at the UK-Ireland box office, with Lionsgate’s The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent the widest release, opening at 563 locations, and the chief contender for making a dent in the top five.
The action comedy sees Nicolas Cage – who is also a producer on the feature – play a fictionalised version of himself, with the actor teaming up with the CIA stop a Cage superfan who may also be the dangerous head of a cartel. Tom Gormican directs, and has co-written the screenplay with Kevin Etten.
