The 17th Doc Fortnight, the Museum of Modern Art’s annual showcase of recent documentary film, will open with Julien Temple’s Habaneros and close with the experimental Hibridos, The Spirits of Brazil. Jonathan Demme's death at the age of 73 prompted an outpouring of online memorials from film lovers who remembered the Oscar-winning director for his varied career: everything from the chilling, intelligent thriller The Silence of the Lambs to the brittle 2008 indie drama Rachel Getting Married. But for music fans, those highlights don't even scratch the surface of what cemented his legacy.
It's not hyperbole to say that Demme was arguably the greatest concert filmmaker ever – look at the number of them that he made, the range of artists he chronicled...

With VOD numbers still kept a secret by most of Hollywood, it’s tough to tell if Diablo Cody‘s directorial debut, Paradise, was any kind of success when released last fall. But reviews were not good (our own Jack Giroux gave it a ‘C’), and no one was really talking about it, so let’s just assume it was at least a cultural failure if not also financial. Considering neither Young Adult nor Jennifer’s Body were hits, either, the Oscar-winning Juno screenwriter could use a shot of relevance. And that shot seems very likely to come with a report from The Wrap that none other than Meryl Streep is set to speak Cody’s dialogue in a new movie directed by Jonathan Demme titled Ricky and the Flash. Demme himself hasn’t been in the spotlight much in the past five years and could also use this intriguing project. He...

Academy Award-winning director Jonathan Demme has made Hollywood spectacles (The Silence of the Lambs, The Manchurian Candidate), eccentric indies (Rachel Getting Married, Something Wild), timeless rock docs (Stop Making Sense, Neil Young Journeys) and other unclassifiable delights. At the 12th annual Festival International du Film de Marrakech, Demme’s filmmaking legacy was honored with both a formal tribute, and an invite to give a “masterclass” to an enraptured Moroccan audience. Filmmaker sat down with Demme to discuss his iconoclastic career. Filmmaker: For decades, you’ve been slinking between narratives and documentaries. What interests you more? Demme: I’ve always followed my enthusiasm. If …...

During the Marrakech Film Festival earlier this month we had a brief chat with director Jonathan Demme ("Stop Making Sense," "The Silence of the Lambs," "Rachel Getting Married," "Neil Young Journeys," etc), who was in town to give one of the festival’s Masterclasses (Darren Aronofsky was among the other filmmakers to give one, you can read our coverage of his masterclass here). The first thing that struck us about Demme, however, was just how enthusiastic of a cinepile the veteran director is -- it’s unusual to come across a person being so honored who is actually spending most of his time at the festival watching the films. As he said, “I’m a hardcore film buff and [love] going to a festival and just immersing myself in as many films as possible, especially films you may not get to see at the multiplex.” He went on pretty much to school us,...

★★★★☆ For an artist who has always doggedly avoided any nostalgia, 2012 has been an unusually reflective year for Neil Young. He published his surprisingly serene autobiography and released two records, one of which was made up of covers of the folk standards of his youth. By combining concert footage with sequences of the singer driving around his hometown of Omemee, Academy Award-winning director Jonathan Demme's film could easily have fallen prey to rose-tinted sentimentality. But Neil Young Journeys (2011) is actually a raucous and enthralling musical portrait of a man who still refuses to bow down to convention.

With the fall chill coming into the air, you might be in the mood for something to bring you a little warmth. Well, instead of going out, stay in and go on a road trip with "Neil Young Journeys," the third collaboration between the legendary musician and filmmaker Jonathan Demme. The movie combines two events into one: Young's performance on May 11, 2011, at the Massey Hall Theater in Toronto, that mirrors a memorable show he gave forty years earlier in 1971, and the titular "journey" that finds Demme, Young and his brother Bob touring their childhood homes in southern Ontario. "If you like Neil Young, if you like rock documentaries, if you like creative cinematography and great guitar riffs – hell, even if you like the wilds of Ontario – this is a movie for you," we wrote in our review from the L.A. Film Festival. And we've got two DVDs and one...

After almost 40 years as a filmmaker, Jonathan Demme has made his mark not only with his feature films but also as a documentarian. Demme's Stop Making Sense (1984) featuring The Talking Heads and his movie version of Spalding Gray's Swimming to Cambodia (1987) effectively portrayed the eclectic nature of his documentary subjects. Demme thrives on providing an intimate view of iconic characters, most notably his collaboration with the rock legend Neil Young.
Neil Young Journeys is Demme's latest and third film project with Young, preceded by Neil Young: Heart of Gold in 2006 and Neil Young Trunk Show in 2009. Like Heart of Gold, Journeys was filmed over the course of two nights of musical performances. The comparison ends there as Heart of Gold dealt more with Young's personal tragedy and health issues, but Journeys is less dramatic and more a drive down memory lane with Young in a 1956 Ford Crown Victoria.

The third Jonathan Demme-helmed doc involving the mercurial Canadian Rock icon in as many years, Neil Young Journeys is perhaps the most slight in terms of actually "documentary" form. We start the film with Neil and his brother beset in vintage large-bodied cars (Crown Vic and Cadillac, respectively), traipsing through their hometown of Omemee, Ontario, languidly trolling the places where the Young boys spent their youth. They visit the school named after his (celebrated sports writer) father, and after a few minor detours and even fewer minutes, they've covered the entirety of the still small town. Ostensibly, this is yet another "journey through the past" from Neil, but this time there's little left of interest to visit. By the time NY approaches an overgrown...

Neil Young Journeys is director Jonathan Demme’s documentary of the last two nights of Young’s solo world tour performing at Toronto’s Massey Hall. The uncut performances, almost entirely from his 2010 album Le Noise, are interspersed with footage of Young driving around his hometown of Omemee, Ontario, in a 1956 Crown Victoria. In the car, he tells stories about his childhood, showing Demme the places where he grew up, almost all of which have been completely destroyed. This is the third documentary Demme has made with Young, the first being Neil Young: Heart of Gold, where Young performed in Nashville...

Walk with him: Neil Young makes Canada shake in Demme’s concert film
On R.E.M.’s farewell masterpiece ‘Collapse Into Now,’ Michael Stipe channels the deep need of human beings to make sense of their lives through the music they listen to when he petitions, “please ask Neil, I need to pow-wow now.” The great Jonathan Demme (‘Something Wild,’ ‘Philadelphia,’ and the often misconstrued ‘Rachel Getting Married’) does his part in fulfilling this request in ‘Neil Young Journeys,’ a live concert doc featuring Young’s electrifying, electrified 2011 solo performance at Toronto’s Massey Hall, coming a full 40 years after ‘Live at Massey Hall,’ a quiet acoustic show from Young’s early folk period, was recorded.
On stage, Neil’s guitar growls and groans, quakes the tectonic plates, and imperils the planet’s orbit. Interspersed with the brilliantly sound-mixed concert footage, Demme unobtrusively inserts casual scenes of Young revisiting his hometown (yes,...

There are different kinds of magic. Everyday occurrences, for example, are full of mysterious moments that may be beyond reasoning: coincidences, fate, déjà vu. Like falling in love with a stranger, only to find out that he lives next door. Of course, there’s the flat-out supernatural, the kind that only happens to a select few, and the Harry Potter/Gandalf variety too. Talking, walking, pothead teddy bears and fantastical creatures rising from melted ice caps would fall into that latter category. However you see it, there’s magic waiting for you in the cinemas this weekend. Double, double toil and trouble. Abracadabra. Lumos!

Alex Kurtzman's People Like Us also hits theatres and could potentially be a surprise hit based on the star power of Chris Pine, although it definitely doesn't feel like a summer movie. There are also a few choice picks in select theatres iincluding this year's Sundance Grand Jury prize winner Beasts of the Southern Wild and Sarah Polley's heart-wrenching dramedy Take This Waltz. Throughout most of his career, Jonathan Demme has been effortlessly bouncing between narrative and documentary filmmaking, the latter of which often revolves around music, starting with 1984’s groundbreaking concert film for Talking Heads, “Stop Making Sense.” Combining his filmmaking talents with his love for music, Demme sought not just to document concerts on film, but to create a cinematic experience around the music.
“I arrived at a couple of things that have been boiler plate for me,” Demme tells The Playlist. “I don’t think we want to see the audience. I don’t think we want to be reminded that this film was performed for anyone other than us. In a year in which the Los Angeles Film Festival has been heavy on music-related films, the spotlight this week turned to music lost, music found and music that's been in front of us all along. Neil Young is a salty dude. Forthcoming, irreverent, introspective, and witty, even as he approaches his mid-sixties, the musician has lost none of his rockability. The man is still writing new songs, for crying out loud, now nearly 50 years after the inception of Buffalo Springfield made him an international sensation. Jonathan Demme’s new rock documentary, “Neil Young Journeys,” is the third collaboration between the director and the musician, following 2006’s “Heart of Gold” and “Trunk Show” in 2009. The two first met when Young was composing the closing song for Demme’s 1993 film, “Philadelphia,” and this trilogy was conceived of not too long after. In this last installment – part concert video, part interview-on-the-go – Young, and his saltiness, are given their full due in an electrifying rock doc that will make you want to stand up and cheer.

While it might appear that director Jonathan Demme has retreated from the mainstream in recent years, directing a string of documentaries including “Jimmy Carter Man From Plains” and a trio of Neil Young concert films, the director says he’s just been following the projects he finds himself drawn to. “It all depends on what I’m enthusiastic about at the moment, what presents itself,” Demme told The Playlist in an exclusive interview this week. “I love doing fiction. I love doing performance films and I love doing documentaries that don’t have music. I love to shoot and I love to shoot things I’m enthusiastic about.”
And lately, Demme has been enthusiastic about Neil Young. Their latest collaboration is entitled “Neil Young Journeys,” in which Demme tags along on a road trip with Young in his 1956 Crown Victoria en route to a performance at Toronto’s iconic Massey Hall.

While it’s been nearly four years since Jonathan Demme‘s last narrative feature, the filmmaker is still keeping busy. His latest film comes in documentary form, as he followed around musician Neil Young during his 2011 tour, most specifically surrounding his trip to the artist’s hometown of Toronto at the concert venue Massey Hall. As I’ve never been overly invested in Young’s work, the documentary seems to be a little plain-looking and something possibly only for fans. Despite the occasional film like "John Carter," the major studios are having a pretty good time of it in 2012. The box office is up all over, and films like "The Hunger Games," "21 Jump Street" and "The Avengers" have performed above expectations with both critics and audiences. There's plenty more to come in the summer, as we discussed yesterday in our blockbuster preview, but what of films of the non-explode-y variety in the warmer months?
While it may seem like there aren't that many options to compete with fare like "Prometheus" and "The Dark Knight Rises," there are some gems to look forward to; some of the best-received films of 2012 so far are making it to theaters in the next few months, along with a few others that we've got high hopes for. It's a happy, happy day for Neil Young & Crazy Horse fans. That's because the group has announced that "Americana", their first album in over 15 years with the full Crazy Horse line-up - Billy Talbot, Frank "Poncho" Sampedro and Ralph Molina - has been slated for release on June 5. Back in January, Young revealed he was working with the band on two new albums while promoting the upcoming Jonathan Demme documentary "Neil Young Journeys" at the Slamdance Film Festival. True to its title, "Americana" will see the group interpreting several classic American folk songs including "Oh Susannah", "She'll Be...

One project that has always been at simmering on Jonathan Demme's always busy plate of projects has been an adaptation of Dave Eggers' post-Hurricane Katrina book "Zeitoun." First announced nearly three years ago, the project hasn't had much movement since and Demme has been busy knocking out a number of documentaries including two centering on Neil Young ("Neil Young Trunk Show" and "Neil Young Journeys") in addition to his latest, "I'm Carolyn Parker." But it seems like "Zeitoun" is finally going to be moving forward, as financing has kicked things into motion. Screen Daily report French shingle MK2 has come on board to produce the $15 million dollar movie. The based-on-a-true-story tale centers on Abdulrahman Zeitoun, a successful Syrian-born painting contractor who stays behind after Hurricane Katrina to protect his business and assist in rescue efforts, only to become wrongly suspected of being a...

During a recent appearance with director Jonathan Demme at the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah to promote the documentary "Neil Young Journeys", the titular singer-songwriter revealed that he's currently working on a pair of albums with his former backing band Crazy Horse, one of which he claimed is already completed and the second of which he said they're currently working on. The news was broken by the Neil Young fansite Thrasher's Wheat, which also alleges the album may see a release this spring. Rolling Stone later confirmed news of the collaboration. "It's looking good," a representative for Young told...

Murderous hotels, bowel-born aliens, dimension-hopping gunslingers… when you think about all of those things, Stephen King's latest crazy idea — sending a man back through time to prevent the assassination of John F. Kennedy — doesn't seem too out there.
Nevertheless, King's recent novel "11.22.63" is the latest of the author's many works to undergo the film adaptation treatment. King, already having had his books taken to the screen by the likes of Stanley Kubrick and Frank Darabont, will next team with director Jonathan Demme for the live-action take on "11.22.63," and the filmmaker himself is already knee-deep in the writing stage.
"I'm adapting Stephen King's book," Demme told MTV News in Park City, Ut over the weekend, where he was promoting the Slamdance debut of his "Neil Young Journeys" documentary. "I'm on the screenplay for it right now."
"It's a time travel story," he said of the plot. "Somebody from the...

Park City, Utah — It's hard to argue about the digital age of music in terms of efficiency and portability. When it comes down to cycling through shelves upon shelves of old CDs versus taking one's entire library of music on the go in a single handheld device, the choice seems rather clear.
But convenience aside, there is something missing in the digital translation of tunes — at least there is according to legendary folk rocker Neil Young, who spoke with MTV News in Park City (where he's promoting the Slamdance release of his new Jonathan Demme-helmed documentary "Neil Young Journeys") and expressed his concerns over the current state of "the sound of music.
