Nice Sketch Comedy From Canada
garbanzo522 August 2018
This is a nice sketch comedy from Canada from the sketch troop Picnicface from Halifax, Nova Scotia. It only got one season and had a lot of good sketches in it that will make you laugh.

It's an affront to comedy and an affront to television that this show was never renewed.

Warning: Spoilers
I'm a pretty easy person to amuse, but it's really rare that I'm laughing so hard that I can't breathe. It's even rarer when I take my time with a series and save each episode for as long as possible, then get pretty depressed when I realize there is literally nothing else that exists like the show I just finished watching.

Picnicface is one of a kind, there never has been a show like Picnicface and there very likely will never be a show like Picnicface again. I've been a fan of these guys for years, I've watched literally all of their material online and enjoyed and quoted these videos frequently. You may think this will be a fanboy rant, and you'd be right to a point. This just goes beyond it's own quality due to the fact that there is literally nothing else like it out there.

A certain website "theglobeandmail" did a commentary about this show where they stated it almost perfectly, "backflips to the punchline". The way the jokes are crafted under so many levels of meta, yet in the end you're left dumbfounded at the punchline and how they got there. It's not for everyone, but for the people who get it; it's beyond comparison and is akin to a holy grail of comedy.

In a world where meme jokes, bros, women more or less being used as props without any tangible substance, and "relatable" comedy being at the forefront, there is a severe lack of good absurdist stuff like this. You'll hear a billion jokes about picking some girl up at a bar, celebrity or pop culture references, or just generally "duh random" jokes that miss the point by a mile. Not to mention most sketch comedians just come off as people you want to punch.

It's a bummer for me because I don't really care about relatable comedy, I don't want to hear someone make a joke about their middle wage job or their cheating girlfriend, I want to see some absolutely mind-boggling ridiculous comedy, and Picnicface provided that. It's also an amazing show to watch while you're "herbalized".

In the end, due to the usual "business" related scenario, Bell Media the owners of the station Comedy Network which this show was on decided to cancel it after the airing of the first season. To what I can see ratings weren't even the issue, it was seemingly a problem which involved a requisitioning of sorts, which resulted in short sighted decision making by the new people in charge. Leading to the brightest hope in comedy being more or less stomped into the ground leaving us with only a few decent stand-up comics and some shows made by people appealing to the lowest common denominator which refuse to do anything out of the ordinary.

The sad thing with this is that it is always a business decision, and not even an educated one. A more recent example of this kind of thing in a different genre is the cancellation of the British drama Utopia, which was brilliant and garnered mass fan appeal. Instead of having anything unique or adventurous with themes, we're left with a bunch of watered down garbage that hell, maybe I'd bite into for a bit, I'd chew a bit and be like "This is OK... but damn do I miss that other flavor."

Shows like Picnicface spoil their viewer-ship, because if you like it; it just doesn't get any better than that. Sketch comedy is my favorite kind of comedy, and a lot of it just comes off as dull and "topical", usually the characters end up being archetypes that seem like they were created to emulate the perfect "gai u'd laik 2 have a drink wif at da bah".

Even with this, I can't even say that Picnicface is objectively good; because my eyes are so damned rose tinted due to the fact that... I'll repeat this again for the last time. THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER SHOW OF THIS CALIBER AGAIN, AND NOTHING AIRING RIGHT NOW ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, INTERNET, OR TELEVISION IS A REPLACEMENT.

End of review.

10/10.
