It's the first feature film to be shot at Tao Hua Dao Island at the coast of Zhejiang Province, east of China. Half of the film were shot there, the other half were shot at Ninghai film Studios, one of the largest film studios in China. Ninghai is located near the coast also at Zhejiang Province.
Casper Van Dien was at first attached to play the role of Steven the American journalist, but was later recast and the role was given to Jeremy Marr Williams.
The movie was special Screening at the 65th Cannes Film Festival in the year 2012.
The movie was ranked 8th of WatchMojo (2006) top 10 list of fantastic Asian movies that should be watched. Other movies in that list was The Tale of The Princess Kaguya (2013) at rank 9th place.
The film was in hurried schedule due to the tsunami incident that struck Japan in early March 2011. The tsunami continued to Taiwan and to Indonesia but it didn't reach the Island or Zhejiang Province where the film were still shooting. However the tsunami caused a nuclear power plant explosion in Japan and it was uncertain if radiation would spread through the coast.
