- A new midwife in training, Chummy Browne, arrives at Nonnatus House. She is eager, goodhearted and friendly but is definitely the product of her upper class upbringing. A major problem is that she can't ride a bicycle - she does mention that she can ride in a horse - so Jenny and the others help her out. Chummy proves to have an excellent bedside manner and on her first call alone has to deal with a very difficult birth. Jenny also meets a young girl working as a prostitute. Mary is only 15 years old and has had a difficult life. Jenny isn't too enthused at how the Church deals with under-aged pregnant women and their offspring.—garykmcd
