Didn't miss the mark, but not fully on target.
gixxermac10 December 2022
I rated this game a solid 7. I was really hoping for more space and less planet, but the whole prison planet thing is cool. The visuals are fantastic, story is good but feels rushed and predictable "oh no... not the same thing happening again and again, who'da thunk it", and gameplay is a bit chunky "character movement is slow and robotic " I can't stand the movement when crawling through vents, or squeezing through tight spaces- they take way too long- I went to the bathroom and popped a corn dog in the microwave waiting for my character to exit a tight squeeze area". Combat needs a lot of help "it's more methodical than anything", and running isn't really running... it's more like a fast paced Sunday stroll in the park with grandma taking a 5 minute rest at every park bench". It's also not as jump scary as Dead Space; I was really hoping for that. I think most of the horror aspect comes from when you need to run or get out of the way of something and it feels like you're walking in place waiting for grandma to figure out where she put her purse. Multiple times I was yelling at my character because he's too slow. I guess you just have to stay in super close quarters in combat. I'm sure the developers designed it that way though.

Overall a good game; Something was definitely missing though. More story, more content, more locations, maybe just clean up some of the game play... I don't know to be honest.

I will play the sequel if they make one.

This game is much better than most critics say.
roland_pataki17 December 2022
We don't get too many linear story oriented single player horror games these days so we have to appreciate it when we do.

The combat system is more complex than it looks. A lot of fun when you play it.

The atmosphere is great, although the game is nowhere near as scary as I thought.

Graphics are nice, sound design is top tier, it's running okay on my series x. Little frame drops here and there but nothing major.

Acting is great, pacing is also very good. Oh and the death animations are brutal.

Took me 11 hours and 54 minutes to complete the story and I enjoyed every second of it.

Things I did not enjoy too much; checkpoint system, no new game plus, and they didn't finish the story. It just ended when it got the most interesting. They will finish it in the dlc.

This is just my opinion. I definitely recommend it. Much better than most people say, so give it a go and see it for yourself. Have fun.

A good game, but something Is missing.
eddyilmitico10 December 2022
Everyone expecting a new and updated dead space. Whoever tells the opposite Is lying.

Good try, but something Is missing and i'll tell you what :

1- the combat system : i think an horror game should scare. How can you be scared if you Need to physically kill Monsters with a sort of Hammer(?)

1a : the dodging mechanism Is ridiculous.

2- The good thing of survival Is having limited ammo and inventory. Why i had Always full inventory here(?)

3- too Much quantity. A beautifull game Is about different challenges. How should i have fun killing the exact same Monsters, 20 times in the same room, and in the same mode???

4-too Much "splatter" but not enough fear.

And Little bugs like the italian voicover not working at all and the framerate not stabile in various scenes.

In any case, fellings are good. A beautifull storyline ( that ends too fast, but ok ) and really good Graphics, followed by brilliant audio effects and quality.

Characters Image quality Is impressive and also the places like the prison and other.

So, summarizing - too Much focus on the "wow" Graphics made a good title missing The real Heart of dead space , but It remains a good game which you'll have fun with.

But not for 70 bucks.

A very nice refreshing game you can play on your console without the wearisome drudgery of the online crap! Reminiscent of the Deadspace series this game kicks butt. Great plot and awesome game play. Very fun and challenging. Scary as hell too so don't play at nite. It has everything you can want...creatures and a wide array of weapons. You play this character that has to find his way tru 'hell' to access an escape route back to civilization. You are guided and prompted by another character as you make your way to escape the mutant infested distant moon that you crash landed on. The unexpected is riddled throughout the journey!!

A good idea... but poor execution
moncouer926 April 2023
I anticipated the arrival of the game.. When I played I enjoyed a lot of elements in it. Combat was both visceral and fun. The graphics were amazing... Then, as the game lagged on it started to show its flaws.

Combat became more and more clunky and obviously swayed in favor of the monsters.. meaning , Jacob could not execute the moves for the buttons I was hitting..it seemed I was doing something wrong... turns out .... I wasn't . It's the game. It became beyond challenging to carry out the simplest of combat moves... normally in a game it takes you a bit and you get the hang of it but here You will find yourself fighting the controls more than the monsters.. unfortunate outcome to this otherwise pretty cool theme.

Calisto beared some similarities to dead space but is hollow compared to the meaty gameplay of the grand daddy of space horror.

It makes me think this was the lamest of the dead space crew that came over to the new game company.. the guy that works on the controls part is laughing sitting over at EA... saying " let's see your game be good without my buttery controls scheme dbags" lol

Thankfully the new dead space came out shortly after and I was able to redeem my belief that good games CAN have it all... controls...graphics... and be entertaining. Forget this one guys. It's a bargain bin game.. get dead space the remake..it'll provide you with countless hours of horror fun and you won't have to fight the controls to be successful. 60 bucks wasted.

Beautiful, fun and repetitive.
izzodiego6 December 2022
Right of the bat I'll start by saying a had loads of fun playing this game. The combat is satisfying, the gore is truly next-gen and the story is solid. I don't think I need to say anything about the graphics because it speaks for itself.

Even though it has a bunch of positives, there's the negatives as well. Repetitive gameplay, lack of enemies, easy boss fights (except for the last one) and underdeveloped combat.

But even with the negatives the game gave me memories of the PS3 and XBOX 360 era, and that's good in my opinion, I would define the game as "simple" but believe me simple isn't easy to make. The game doesn't try to change a formula or to be innovating and I respect that, especially nowadays with just dumb and meaningless "innovations" to try and catch the public's attention. Making it simple was the right way to go for me. And god bless them for not including a online marketplace or anything online related.

I played on the PS5 and the game didn't have trouble running just a few dropped frames here and there but solid performance. (Just writing this part because apparently pc players are having a bad time) Overall it was truly a work of love and most importantly I got what I expected. Exited to see new work from the studio's involved in this project.

Great Plot, Fun game
rivblue-322485 December 2022
This game has a Story line that I'm into. I'm most of the way thorough but dang, this game is Tough. It takes a while to get the hang of. I gave this a 7 because I was hoping for more jaw dropping cinematic sequences. This game isn't very scary, but I'd call it survival horror. It really is a lot like Deadspace but not as scary. The Mechanics overall aren't that great and the action is pretty repetitive but it's hard to put the controller down. I'm a true story gamer and need to find out how this ends.

I'm not too much into recording reviews when the minimum is so much lettering and I'm done.

Excelent in every way
fabianpinoo24 October 2023
I just finished playing it (main story). I enjoyed every moment, I'm not really a fan of horror games but this one is just very good, I gave it a chance and I'm glad I did. The atmosphere since you start really puts you into the game, the gameplay fits perfectly with the narrative, atmosphere, it's really the way to be played. I recommend it so much, I want to play NG+ and the other modes. I've always liked story mode games that have a good story, this game tells a very good story, it's very enjoyable. The gameplay is very good, the system to upgrade through the story is very well done and the way the UI is made is perfect, I really like the way everything is shown in the screen.

I thank the developers for this game, and I'll be waiting patiently for the next one (don't rush it).

Good atmospheric sci-fi horror
Roanoke8225 December 2022
Big fan of the first two dead space games, but this isn't dead space and I didn't expect the same game.

Sure there are similarities but they didn't bother me. Visually the game is stunning and I liked the atmosphere, for me it had an Event Horizon, Alien feel to it.

Is it the scariest game ever? No. Does is it have the best story? No. But hey this is like a sci-fi B movie, you like it or you don't.

The combat worked fine for me. I did find the world a bit empty, as in the same few posters and a soda machine everywhere. This took away a little bit of the illusion.

Is it worth full price? Well that depends, for me it was but I love sci-fi horror. If you think sci-fi horror is meh then wait for a discount.

Combat is too sloppy!
ayameofazuma19 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I really wanted to like this game. It looks great and the story is interesting. But the combat is so clunky and just straight up sloppy! It's impossible to reload your gun or heal during a boss fight because you get hit as soon as you try. You also can't turn and run away from the swarms of monsters that attack relentlessly to get some space between you for just a moment to reload. You can't reload and dodge at the same time. TwoHead is hard enough as is the second time around and then you get attacked from behind while fighting him as well. I didn't make it any further; I had to give up due to the poor combat. I play most games on Normal/Medium but I had to put this on Easy. A challenge is fine, but Easy in this game is more like Hard. I should be allowed to enjoy a game too...on a slightly easier setting if I have to quit because it's become impossible to me. Not everyone is a teen boy or young adult who argue that all these difficult games are just "easy" to them. I enjoyed Dead Space (same creators) and I enjoy some games that require some technique in their combat. But this game becomes too repetitive fighting the same exact monsters over and over and I just can't get past it's troublesome, clunky gameplay. And every time you die, the loading screen is ungodly long! It's getting a 1 because it's now a total waste of $70 for me as I'll never get to finish it! And I don't understand how it has such a high rating on here, as I've heard a lot of the same complaints I've made.

Best game of the year!
saqibcreate-196-12376121 December 2022
Just got it from steam and almost played 4+ hours. Its amazing. Everything what I was hopping for. Its a survival game style that everyone should adopt. Great artwork and story.

Love the main character jacob and how he is managing to survive in limited resources. So far a great fun. Must have game!

Become fan of director. These types of games should be made more! Dead space players will love this.

What I love: Suspense, Environment, unexpected jumpscares, hidden cells with lots of goodies. Medium phase game (not too much of hidden or secret ways for continuing game) a straight forward gem! Thank You so much!

it was good
merem120 December 2022
This game is pretty fun. I like the atmosphere of it with the setting inside a prison. The actors do an awesome job playing their characters. There are a couple of issues with the game though. It feels like something is missing with it. It could have been amazing. Still, it is an entertaining horror game with plenty of blood and guts. It really goes crazy with the gore through the experience, I enjoyed that. The weapons are pretty cool. The locations in the game look good. There were a couple of areas that I really liked. The game is worth playing for horror fans. The Callisto Protocol is a solid fun ride.

Boring and repetitive
jaketranter10 December 2022
Boring enemies, sketchy combat controls and all round average game!

Every fight feels the same and I just find myself trying to get through the game as quickly as possible. Not worth the money paid.

At least give us a variation of combat scenarios, it feels like every enemy I kill is the exact same. The combat and dodging controls are awful and sometimes I find myself questioning the continuity of it all. The atmosphere is good and I can tell it's made by the same guys who did Dead Space but other than that there is not much to it. The scare factor is lacking and the storyline is pretty awful, I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone looking for an in-depth journey into a far away planet haha.

What on Jupiter are you complaining about?!
Jaggermaster4 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I mean seriously, Dead Space is one of the best scifi horror game series there is. After third part, it was announced that there won't be fourth part because of a bankrupt or something. Fans were of course little pissed about it. But then years later, we were told that there will be a spiritual successor to Dead Space and fans were delighted. And here it is. The Callisto Protocol. In my opinion, it is Dead Space spin-off, or maybe even the "lost" fourth part. It has exactly the same gameplay style. You got third person view. You got the real time inventory. You collect credits. You got monsters. You got dark and blood smeared tunnels. You got everything Dead Space had/has. Why are you complaining?! Just play the game, don't read the reviews because people ARE comparing it to Dead Space. But The Callisto Protocol is still fun and scary (hint, wear headphones) and challenging. I played with medium but it's beatable. I read somewhere that some critic played it on medium and had to change the difficulty to easy and it still was too challenging. Therefore, the critic didn't like the game. But if you're an experienced player (like me), you will survive...

Edit: After finishing the game, I must admit and acknowledge that I completely understand the critics' complaints about the difficulty level of the game. At times, I had to switch it to the easiest setting, and still, it was a challenging experience. Another thing I really didn't like was the saving points. You squeeze through pipes, invest a significant amount of time in it, turn a corner, and then you die in a flash. The saving point is on the other side of those pipes, so you have to go through the narrow passage again. Ugh! I don't think I'll ever play this again, but at least I can say I've played it.

Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order meets Dead Space
josephwarner-9055211 January 2023
Having played through the game and experienced some weird stuff like rendering issues and floating objects, the game felt like a R-Rated version of Jedi Fallen Order. Both have the same engine; where the graphics and motion blur are even identical, forcing enemies into traps with a force-based mechanic (GRP in this case) and even a melee weapon as well. Though the Fallen Order does not cause the game to crash during exiting the stealth section. Limbs do not float around after being removed after beating an enemy (Then again human enemies cannot be dismembered compared to the biophagous enemies). But while it takes a bit longer to load in game textures, the camera does not randomly zoom out after a certain sequence (the bounty hunter sequence in my case), the combat has more variety in weaponry despite the lack of energy blades, and it does not feel like a soul's clone. While the game does have its issues, it is certainly a step up from the Fallen Order.

ANGRYSPNGGAMER558 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I can't actually believe there are so many people that don't like this game. Seeing the mid/kind of good reviews and playing the first 45 minutes of the game when it didn't have any action and there were just things set up , my early opinion was that I was about to play a crappy game and that I threw 40 euros in the trash can. As I moved one my opinion about the game kept getting better and better. It's definitely a horror game (45 jumpscares in 1 game can't automatically turn it into a horror. So don't be expecting jumpscares and sh"t in your pants. The game creates a horror atmosphere due to the fact that you are fighting for your life against deadly monsters in a high security prison and that freaks you out. There are some really brilliant ideas in the game such as UJC gun and consumables printer and the telekinesis gauntlet. In my opinion the game has 2 (main) disadvantages: the combat system which is kinda mid and sketchy and the small dose of boredom due to the lack of variety in the monsters, boss fights etc. When I saw this game in last year's gamescom I can say I was excited and I had really high expectations. And now that I finished the story mode 10 minutes ago I can easily say the game actually met them. One of the best survival games of the decade.

Great atmosphere, boring gameplay
Muggonny7 October 2023
The game is very cinematic to a fault. On one hand, it does an excellent job immersing you into the world and creating an experience that, at times, can be very intense. On the other, it felt like the majority of the focus was put into the presentation and not the gameplay. There are really cool, brutal kill animations that give the combat a feeling of realism. Every hit is heavy and uncoordinated. You play as a cargo transporter without much fighting experience, so it makes sense that your attacks would be slow. This encourages you to be methodical, an important factor for any survival horror game. If you are playing on any of the harder difficulties, taking on more than one enemy at a time could be a death sentence.

It sounds fun at first, but after a while, it starts to feel clunky. There aren't any combos, so all you do is swing a baton left and right. If you need to dodge an enemy's attack, just tilt the left analog stick left or right with little to no effort. This feels too easy, especially since you can just hold the analog stick in either direction during combat to automatically evade every attack. Blocking is useless. You get some cool guns and levitation powers that are very useful, but it's encouraged to stick to melee combat for the sake of resources. Another good aspect for a survival horror to have.

The problem? It feels like it lacks consequence. Now, I played on Normal difficulty with medium security settings, so don't take my complete word for it. In the harder difficulties, supplies are limited so you're forced to save every resource that you can. I'm mostly talking about the dodge mechanic. I can say there are consequences to the combat since every time you attack, you're forced to watch the character swing a baton in slow motion, but every time you do the other enemies in the vicinity hang back and wait their turn, and avoiding them is relatively easy once you get a feel for the gameplay. Some of them will block your attacks, but this can be overcome when you upgrade your baton enough.

It's a 10/10 cinematic game with 3/10 gameplay.

As for the story, it's fine. I picture other people would like it a lot more than I did. Some of the writing in the beginning didn't make any sense, but I figured it'd all come together as the plot progressed. It did, and I wasn't very impressed with how it all came together. The ending was meh, especially the twist. The story built it self up in a way to a reveal that the main character may not be as good as he seems, leading to the final act being a redemption arc of sorts, but it lacked the nuance for me to take it seriously. The "big reveal" is very blatant and didn't feel like it was properly built up to.

The final boss was meh.

Some of the worldbuilding is pretty interesting.

To give this game credit, normal mode still felt hard. They didn't pull their punches when it came to the difficulty. It really gives you the impression that you're in a survival scenario.

Overall, this is a *passable* game that will probably have wonderful sequels. I don't hate it, I enjoyed it for what it was, I just don't feel encouraged to return to it anytime in the near future.

Dead space 2.0
theblowerfamily5 November 2023
As a dead space fan this game was always gonna tick boxes for me - stompy stompy.

The story was good and yes a bit dead spacy, I think they could've fleshed out a bit more but it was solid enough the game play was enjoyable.

If they were to bring out part 2 would I mind - not at all.

Adding Josh for the main voice for me worked, and I am glad it was not gunner (no offense but you are Isaac) I can see this story getting added to improved and even the back story would work.

Critically it is a bit repetitive and maybe a bit of driving or something else would have been good to break it up at times - flying and zero g is dead space so glad they didn't rip that.

I would like to see where this story goes next.

Just a good game
From the beginning of the game, I felt like I was in an escape room. It has a good story telling, but the continuous and long fight sequences reduce the attraction and slow down the storytelling rhythm of the game, as if they are included just to prolong the gameplay!!!🤔 According to what I heard, this game had many technical graphics problems at the release time, but I played it after the updates that were released for the game (V1.028), and I can say that I did not encounter many problems or bugs.

I can't recommend this game to everyone, but if you're a fan of this genre, it's worth trying.

Callisto Protocol mistakes gore for horror
greg_maddux_clone16 December 2022
This is a continuous problem with video games in the horror genre, but it needs to be said: blood, guts, and grotesque images aren't inherently scary.

What makes games like Dead Space and Alien: Isolation landmark successes within the horror genre is not the blood and guts spewed across the screen, but the genuine terror that comes with exploring the worlds they've created. It's the fear of being caught, wondering what it was that made that sound, or the outline of something disappearing into the shadows. It's not redundantly smashing a gross looking corpse with a hammer as it growls at you.

Callisto Protocol is...okay. The environment and setting? Love it. I'm a sucker for Science Fiction Horror. Cast? Good. Basic premise? Prison planet is a touch cliché but it can work. The story? Eh...I can forgive some of the more derivative plot points and how much it borrows from Dead Space. But what I can't forgive is the boring pacing and repetitive combat that the game forces you into.

Want to sneak past enemies? Nope. They pop out 1v1 and you beat them to death. Every time. Want to find creative ways to solve problems or avoid hordes of creatures? Nope. Go here, open this door, kill that thing, unlock that room, repeat. The environments and corridors begin to all look the same (splattered with blood, echoing with screams). The combat begins to feel like a chore (you're not afraid of the creatures, you're just annoyed you have to beat another one to death...again) and that's *if* the combat mechanics work. If any CP creator is reading this-please realize that I would rather have little to no combat (like a Dark Pictures Anthology game or Outlast) in which I'm just avoiding death versus a game where I stumble into a room and have to begrudgingly kill something so I can move to the next room and do it again.

Horror is not gore. We don't get scared of something gross that growls and vomits up junk. Maybe the first time you see them it's unsettling. The second and third time the shock wears off. By the third hour of gameplay you'll roll your eyes at how annoying and disinterring you find them-and this is one of the biggest draws of the game (there's no puzzles, no side quests, no real RPG elements).

CP focused on the frosting and forgot about the cake. It's lots of blood, shrieks, screams, and gross creatures, but without the underlying gameplay, combat mechanics, and tone that make a horror game worth playing, CP just ends up feeling hollow and never delivers on the terror that it promises.

Great but so repeating
cindyjuntunen26 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Don't get me wrong, the game was great and had amazing quality, voice actors etc. Etc. But I can't help to also dislike it. It was always "Jacob you have to get here" then on his way there the bridge/road broke or whatever so he had to take a reroute. Then it happened again later on and again and again, it just felt meh yk? I would also like to mention that I could not complete the game, the second Two-headed brute made me give up and then I found out that it was going to reappear two MORE times as well?? Repeating. I was really invested in the story but because I didn't finish I had to look up a video to see it and I really liked it! I just think this game maybe wasn't for me? Other people obviously love the big-boss-fights and that is very understandable.

(I saw the ending on Zanar Aesthetics' YouTube channel if anyone is interested)

If you wanted a reimagining of Dead Space, this is not it.
vippinftw3 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
If you wanted a reimagining of Dead Space, this is not it. This a thinly veiled action game with poor mechanics that games ten years ago had resolved.

What really upset me is this was advertised to me as a survival horror and it's not. Within hours, you're taking down hordes of enemies with a generic attack dance; dodge, attack, dodge, attack fight sequence and it just repeats every room. If there are multiple enemies, they wait for you to finish each individual fight because they are polite monsters. You are also made to finish these fights, you can't retreat and gather your thoughts and re-engage. You are locked into a fight once it starts regardless of enemy numbers.

The death animations, which the game advertised so much, are fun the first few times. Then you start to notice how much they are repeated and don't make sense. Multiple enemy types can give you the same death animation. That big boy stomped your head? Makes sense. That little one can too? The same way? Oh. You got hit in the shoulder by a monsters arm, but your head got sliced clean in two? Ok.. Your jaw is getting ripped off, but for some reason you are now clean shaven, your beard disappears. Youtube that one, it's funny. But I guess we don't have to worry, they have announced they are releasing more death animations, you just have to buy it in the form of DLC in the future.

Don't forget that when you do get a weapon upgrade area and you spend time to upgrade your gear and then die before reaching the next checkpoint, you don't retain your upgrades. You need to do that again. Every time.

The story just seems to be a bunch of plot points from other games/movies smashed into one big mess. You have literal Kimiko from The Boyz, you have fungi zombies from The Last of Us and then you have discount Mr X from Resident Evil 2.

The jump scares are very predictable. Put an item in front of a foggy glass window you need to pickup and as expected, there's an enemy. You can make a game out of it. That is at least a little fun.

I really wanted to like this game. Survival horror is my bag. But this game just made me want to play Dead Space 1. I hope the remaster coming out in 2023 is good.

Dead Space indeed but with his own identity
AvionPrince1628 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I need to say that i was worried at first because the game is clearly inspired of Dead Space .

And i was scared that they made something similar that have not the same taste but im really surprised about the game .

The story is a little bit too much and kind of classic : a virus and an antidote to help everyone . Too much drama and sometimes it was not even necessary but i didnt really get into it by the story but more with that atmosphere, the visuals ( lets be honest : Callisto Protocol is a very beautiful game ), the stealth ( yes the game contain a way to kill ennemies silently and i like that different approach of gameplay ), the sound design ( it really enhance the experience of horror and tensions ). How the characters meet are a little bit clumsy and classic ( Mostly Dani and Jacob.)

The variety of ennemies was interesting and there was really violent and we could feel their violence by their way of how they moves . I enjoyed the mechanics of melee with that long stick and i found very intuitive the way to dodge the attacks and was really great to play and give a different experience than the dead space and have in my opinion his own identity .

The story was ok but nothing that interesting and the ambience , mood was really there and i really love my gameplay during the time that i played .

Some design elements remind me too much of Dead Space : the upgrading elements , the doors , some weapons , some powers. But it really surprised me how the game was pretty good and have an aventure interesting enough to keep you there with some original mechanics. So yeah its a great quality and love how violent and tense the game was : it really made me forget that im playing a game similar of dead space sometimes. So yeah a big surprise that i didnt expect the video game will be that good.

Disappointed with the game...and myself.
jamesschroll-4134613 December 2022
Starting with the good points. 1. It's beautiful. Even on the ps4 it's still a really good looking game. 2. Voice actors spot on. They sound like they're genuinely in the situations they're in. 3. It is a great story in a fresh universe. They conglomerate bits and pieces of other sci-fi horrors into something original. It's all downhill after that. Gameplay is glitchy, mechanics sometimes fail, Game itself would hiccup and move back a couple steps. Had to restart a few times bc of things failing to proceed properly. Blue screened once. Game mechanics: dodging is trash. Reloading while dodging is impossible. Will randomly switch out your gun for melee weapon. The gun switching mechanic is an annoyance. Plot was extremely predictable. Worst however is just how linear the game was. Literally 0 side missions or exploration. Took me days to complete because I was either bored or upset with it. This game wasn't worth $60 let alone the $80 I blew for the bogus pre-ordered deluxe edition. 3 stars was me being generous for this overall atrocious game.

disappointing

It is really badly balanced and very repetitive and **yawn** boring. The hard surface models, level-design and lighting are quite poor. But most of all, the game's responsiveness is a mess; as are the dodge- and traversal-mechanics. There seldom are smooth transitions from one action to another, instead it is a chain of animations that are not very well interconnected and therefore lead to annoying delays that have to be tolerated.

The story does not feel naturally unfolding but rather forced and random, and the circumstances that bring the protagonist into different situations are ridiculous.
