Jerry Seinfeld’s highly touted (and largely panned) feature directorial debut, “Unfrosted,” spent four days leading Netflix’s top 10 movie chart before another Netflix original, “Mother of the Bride” starring Brooke Shields, took the slot before the thematically appropriate weekend holiday.
“Unfrosted” led for just four days, with “Shrek” from 2001 leading midweek before the debut of “Bride.” The Dreamworks animated classic is still in second place, while Seinfeld’s Pop-Tarts comedy dropped to fourth.
“Bride” comes from director Mark Waters. Perhaps best known for his “Freaky Friday” remake and the original “Mean Girls,” Waters went on to direct “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” “Vampire Academy,” and “Bad Santa 2.” In the new rom-com, Shields is a mom who realizes the father of her future son-in-law broke her heart decades ago.

The Ploughmen follows a strange friendship that develops between a haunted young deputy sheriff and a notorious old murderer, according to the film’s synopsis: “John Gload (Nolte) is a killer so adept at his job that only now has he been apprehended. Val Millimaki (Teague) is low man in the Copper County Sheriff department. As Val continues his unlucky streak of finding dead bodies, Sheriff (Murray) puts him on night duty to try and get Gload to reveal his past. Surpassing Expectations with Ghostbusters Frozen Empire The specter of success looms large over Gil Kenan’s latest foray into the legendary Ghostbusters franchise, Frozen Empire. Despite being tethered to the legacy of its predecessors, this sequel has carved out its own niche, earning accolades for its innovation and engaging narrative. Stepping in as director, Kenan has managed to balance nods to the past while steering the series into new territory. The film, serving as both a direct follow-up to Ghostbusters: Afterlife and a respectful nod to the original films, has garnered a financial success, grossing over $190 million globally. This feat

Carrie Coon is confused and under the weather, though the two don’t appear to be connected. At the tail end of her March press tour for “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” the Emmy- and Tony-nominated actor caught a bug akin to bronchitis. “I don’t know if it’s bronchitis,” Coon said over Zoom. “I’m being dramatic… but that’s my job!”
Bronchitis or not, confusion isn’t one of her symptoms. It’s the result of a particularly complicated Emmy season. Typically held each September — a tradition that strains logic in and of itself, since no one really follows the old fall-to-spring broadcast television calendar anymore — the Emmys will be held twice in 2024. The 75th Primetime Emmys took place in January, after the original date in 2023 was pushed back to accommodate the WGA and SAG strikes, and the 76th Primetime Emmys are scheduled for September. By now, you should know exactly who you're gonna call. The fifth installment of the ghost-busting franchise arrived earlier this year, courtesy of director Gil Kenan, with "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire." Although not as much of a forward-looking sequel as many fans wanted it to be, the nostalgia-bound film picked up where "Afterlife" left off and reunited new additions Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, and Mckenna Grace (along with newcomer comedians Kumail Nanjiani and Patton Oswalt) with the original cast of the 1984 classic that started it all: Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, and Ernie Hudson. At least in terms of the box office, the results were rather mixed and only time will tell if pivoting this series away from raunchy, irreverent comedy towards a more family-friendly demographic will ultimately pay off.
But even as "Frozen Empire" remains in theaters, fans now...

The first reactions are here for George Miller’s latest venture into the post-apocalyptic wasteland.
The embargo broke for social media reactions to Furiosa, the eagerly anticipated prequel to the 2015 stunner Mad Max: Fury Road.
This new entry has Anya Taylor-Joy as Imperator Furiosa (taking over for Charlize Theron) and Chris Hemsworth as a devious warlord in a story that takes place 15 years before the previous film.
Early social reactions (below) can sometimes be a bit different (typically more enthusiastic) than official critic reviews, and surely there are many more to come soon. But based on the first batch Monday evening, Furiosa is a visual stunner with “ferocious, wild and unrelenting” action and a story that “spans decades” and boosts strong performances from the two leads.
The question going into the movie’s Memorial Day weekend launch is whether Miller’s epic can jump start the Hollywood box office after a sluggish few months,...

Challengers failed to repeat as the top film of the box-office weekend as newcomer The Fall Guy easily claimed first place by a margin of $20.4 million. Universal Pictures enjoyed dominance over the box-office weekend top ten as the studio sported three films in the weekend’s list.
Claiming first place was The Fall Guy with $28.5 million, easily besting the second-place film, the re-release of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace which took in $8.1 million for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. This pushed last weekend’s top film, Challengers, to a third place finish where it added $7.6 million, raising its two-week total to $29.5 million for United Artists Releasing. Screen Gems, meanwhile, enjoyed the debut of Tarot in fourth place where it managed to bring in $6.5 million for the studio. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was consequently dropped two spots where it claimed fifth place with $4.5 million over the weekend.

While the big-screen adaptation of The Fall Guy was never expected to open to mega-blockbuster numbers, no one thought the well-reviewed Ryan Gosling movie would stumble out of the gate to this extent. Indeed, Hollywood insiders assumed this had a shot at a $40 million plus opening (we expected about $35 million). Now it looks like David Leitch’s film will only make $28.5 million over what’s widely considered the first weekend of the summer movie season. Last year, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 made $110 million in the same frame.
The Fall Guy was never expected to open anywhere near that number. Indeed, it was originally planned as a March release, only to be moved thanks to how empty the release calendar is due to the SAG/WGA strikes from last year. Still, given how well it was reviewed (we loved it) and the fact that stars Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt...

Locally-produced crime action thriller “The Roundup: Punishment” dominated the South Korea box office for a second weekend. In contrast, Hollywood’s “The Fall Guy” opened softly in third place.
Data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic), showed “The Roundup: Punishment” grossed $13.8 million between Friday and Sunday, earned from 1.92 million ticket sales.
That represented a huge 83% market share over the weekend, albeit down from 92% a week earlier. The second weekend score also represented a 33% week-on-week decline. The film has earned $55.8 million, including earnings from a smattering of previews a weekend earlier. The running total came from an aggregate 7.96 million spectators.
That makes “The Roundup Punishment” the second highest-scoring film this year and, after just 12 days play, it is already the seventh best performing film in Korea since the beginning for the pandemic era. Two of the titles currently ahead of “Punishment” are its franchise predecessors...

The spooky comedy franchise may seem an unlikely place to find an ethnicity and faith adviser, but productions are increasingly aware of a duty to make sure communities are truthfully represented

Nick Jonas and Paul Rudd are set to star in “Power Ballad” a musical comedy from John Carney, who directed “Once” and “Sing Street.” They are currently filming in Dublin.
“Power Ballad” was written by Carney and Peter McDonald. The official logline for the film reads, “An uplifting music-driven story about a wedding singer, a rock star and the song that comes between them.”
Jonas and Rudd are both known for their work on-screen with Jonas’ credits including “Camp Rock,” Scream Queens” and “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” and a TV performance of “Jersey Boys Live!” Rudd is known for “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” “Only Murders In The Building,” “Knocked Up” and Marvel’s Ant-Man films.
However, both of them have stacked Broadway credits, too. Jonas started acting on Broadway at seven years old. He’s been in “Les Misérables,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Hairspray,” “Annie Get Your Gun” and “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying...

Scout a picturesque cliffside and fire up the wind machines because Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas are ready to feel the wind in their hair while serenading audiences for the musical comedy Power Ballad. The film starring Rudd and Jonas revolves around a wedding singer (Rudd), a rock star (Jonas), and the song that divides them. The project hails from 30West and Anthony Bregman’s Likely Story.
John Carney directs Power Ballad from a script he co-wrote with Peter McDonald, who wrote and directed the comedy short Pentecost and co-wrote The Bachelor Weekend with John Butler.
“We are so excited to bring John Carney’s next film to Cannes. John has a magic ability to weave great music into wonderfully engaging and universally relatable stories that make audience emotions run high,” said Alex Walton of WME. “Power Ballad is fun and heartwarming – themes that audiences crave today. Paul Rudd is set to go toe to toe, voice to voice, with Nick Jonas for John Carney’s latest musical.
Carney’s “Power Ballad” stars Rudd and Jonas as two very different types of musicians: One is a wedding singer while the other is a rock star, and while the casting details over which actor is playing which character haven’t been confirmed, Jonas’ real-life rock star status must be influencing his performance.
Carney recently helmed “Flora and Son” and is set to direct the upcoming musical comedy that he cowrote with Peter McDonald. Principal photography began in Dublin at the end of April, with the feature billed as “an uplifting music-driven story about a wedding singer, a rock star, and the song that comes between them.”

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has a digital release – just 46 days after arriving in cinemas. More below…
If you’ve been suffering with home-bound supernatural phenomena recently, you’ll be glad to know help is on its way. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is available to buy or rent on digital from Tuesday 7th May, courtesy of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
Frozen Empire debuted on 22nd March – meaning it’s spent a luxurious 46 days exclusively in cinemas before heading to your nearest phone, tablet or absurdly posh toaster.
The film got, ahem, a bit of a frosty reception on its cinema release; in our review, we called it “a haunted, overstuffed freezer”, though we did reckon McKenna Grace puts in a good shift as the franchise’s latest lead. All told, audiences seemed pretty cool on the whole thing, and it’s clocked out of the box office race having grossed $188.4m worldwide – the...

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Box Office Collection Day 31: Hits 1 Crore Mark For The Last Time ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
For the last time in its theatrical run, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has seen 1 crore mark being crossed at the box office. It was a push for that to happen, especially after Friday had dipped to 46 lakhs and then premium IMAX and 4Dx screens too had gone to Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Still, courtesy the equity that the film has managed to build for the last few weeks, there is a residual audience that’s stepping in, and that’s what’s keeping it alive.
This was seen from 1.14 crore more than it gathered to collect in theatres on Sunday. It’s good to see that at least there is one holdover release for over a month that’s still managing to collect some moolah at least, though...

After two weeks atop the box-office weekend, Civil War was pushed from the number one spot (and then some) and replaced by Challengers which took first place by a margin of $7.2 million.
In its first weekend of release, the United Artists Releasing product starring Zendaya, Challengers debuted in first place with a total of $15.0 million. This was enough to easily best second-place finisher Unsung Hero which debuted with a total of $7.8 million earned for Lionsgate Films. Meanwhile, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire held its ground at number three where it added $7.2 million over its fifth weekend in release to bring its overall total for Warner Bros. to $181.7 million. All of this pushed last weekend’s top film, Civil War, to fourth place where it took in $7.0 million for A24, giving the film a three-week total of $56.2 million. April came to a close with a number of smaller releases, ahead of the start of the summer movie season launching in May, though one movie definitely stood out ahead of the others. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Luca Guadagnino‘s tennis romance, “Challengers,” starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist, opened in 3,477 theaters on Friday with solid reviews, racking up $1.9 million in previews from Thursday and earlier. After pulling in $6.2 million on Friday (including previews), “Challengers” won the weekend with ease, making an estimated $15 million, and receiving a fair “B+” CinemaScore from audiences polled, as the movie became the talk of social media all weekend. “Challengers” also added another $9 million overseas in 52 markets to bring its global total to $25 million.

As expected, Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers scored an easy win this weekend, with a $15 million weekend, just a touch softer than we predicted earlier this week. The tennis-cantered love triangle was no doubt boosted by Zendaya’s star power, with her hotter than ever in the wake of Dune: Part Two’s blockbuster showing this winter. IMAX screens were dominated by Zendaya in one form or another, with both Challengers and Dune 2 playing in the format this weekend thanks to the latter’s re-release.
Notably, the film posted Guadagnino’s best box office opening to date, with the weekend total more than doubling the total take of his previous biggest opener, Bones and All. It’ll be interesting to see if Challengers can hold up in the coming weeks, with The Fall Guy opening next weekend and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes opening the weekend after. With...

Box Office – Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Is Fair On 5th Friday (Photo Credit – IMDb)
After being quite stable during the weekdays, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire did see a bit of a drop on Friday as 46 lakhs came in. On Thursday, the film had collected 56 lakhs and it has gone down by around 10 lakhs.
Now, given the fact that no major Hindi release has arrived, one would have expected the numbers to stay stable at least instead of taking a drop. However, as mentioned in yesterday’s report, since Hollywood’s own Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has arrived, it has taken away all highly priced properties like IMAX and 4Dx.
Hence, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has to contend with 2D and some very select 3D screens. Even otherwise, the film has actually completed most of its run and is now hanging in there since there are...

2024 is an important year for the movie business. The past few years have been all about recovering from the pandemic. Now? Hollywood and theater chains are facing the challenge of weathering a year that has been crippled by 2023's Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild of America strikes. There have been moments worth cheering about, such as the success of "Dune: Part Two." But, as always, there have been plenty of sour moments at the box office as well, with more than a few flops to go along with the hits.
The early part of the year was anchored by relatively smaller hits like director David Ayer's "The Beekeeper" and the "Mean Girls" musical. Mixed in along the way were a wide variety of misfires, from hopeful big studio blockbusters to smaller, original movies just trying to find their way in an uncertain theatrical landscape. For a second consecutive weekend, Civil War held the top spot of the box-office weekend, albeit by a mere margin of $0.9 million.
In its second week of release, A24’s Civil War brought in $11.1 million for the studio, to raise its overall total to $44.9 million. This proved just enough to best the Universal Pictures release Abigail which debuted in second place with $10.2 million over the weekend. Meanwhile, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was forced to third place where it added $9.5 million to lift its four-week total to $171.6 million for Warner Bros. Studios. The second debut of the weekend, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare landed in fourth place where it made $9.0 million for Lionsgate Films. The Crunchyroll release Spy x Family Code: White debuted in fifth place with $4.9 million.
Dropping two spots over the weekend to land in sixth place was Kung Fu Panda 4 which took in $4.6 million for...

Things had been going so well at the box office over the past few weeks, so it was disappointing that none of the week’s three new wide releases made much of an impact. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Although Universal’s vampire thriller “Abigail,” directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (aka “Radio Silence”), had the best hopes of breaking out due to its cool horror premise and ensemble cast, Alex Garland‘s future shock thriller “Civil War,” starring Kirsten Dunst and Wagner Moura, was able to hold onto first place with $11.1 million, a drop of 57% from its record-setting opening for A24. The movie has grossed $44.9 million domestically so far, which already puts it in the top 10 all-time grossers for the studio after just 10 days.
Although horror tends to do quite well with younger moviegoers, “Abigail” and its cast, which includes Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton,...

The battle of the box office has been won by A24 and Alex Garland’s Civil War, which defied expectations (ours included) to take first place at the box office. Comscore is estimating an $11.1 million weekend for the controversial film, which posted a modest 56% decline at the box office, which is way better than anyone was expecting. Indeed, the film has a $44 million running total at the North American box office, which is great for a movie like this, especially considering how divisive it’s been.
However, Civil War’s good fortune means this week’s big new horror release, Abigail, seriously underperformed. Radio Silence’s well-reviewed vampire flick made a disappointing $10.2 million, which is a shame as it’s a nifty little movie. Potentially, word-of-mouth could give it a boost, but let’s face it – that doesn’t happen with horror movies. They’re always front-loaded, so the chances...

Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare will likely take the #3 spot, with the WWII period action film expected to take in somewhere between $9M-$11M. Lionsgate is calling their all-in previews for Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare at $1.45M, however that includes around $600K in advance shows from last weekend in addition to Thursday’s cash. Which means Universal’s Radio Silence vampire movie, Abigail, won Thursday previews with $1M. Meanwhile, Sony Crunchyroll’s anime movie Spy x Family Code: White did $670K from shows that began at 4Pm.
The weekend crown is expected to be a game of rock, paper, scissors between Abigail and A24’s second weekend of Civil War at about $12M+ apiece. Civil War led Thursday among pics in regular release with $1.6M, -14% from Wednesday, for a first week of $33.1M at 3,838 theaters.
Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare started its Thursday previews at 6Pm. Abigail started her previews at 5Pm in 2,800 last night and will expand to 3,384 locations today. Both movies are R-rated with good reviews on Rotten Tomatoes...

Two highly anticipated films are released this weekend: Radio Silence’s Abigail and Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. However, the release pattern for the latter is highly unusual, with Ritchie’s big-budget war epic only getting a theatrical release in the United States, skipping theaters in Canada and the UK in favor of an exclusive run on Prime Video later. As such, it’s not expected to make much of a dent at the weekend box office, with it looking like Abigail will pull off an easy win.
Currently, we’re predicting Abigail will make about $20 million. That’s much less than what Radio Silence pulled off with the Scream films. Remember, though, that this is an original horror title with a twist on classic vampire folklore. So far, the reviews have been mixed, with our man, Mike Conway, loving it, while others have accused it of being a tad goofy.

British-American filmmaker Gil Kenan, who has directed ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’, has said that the ‘Ghostbusters’ franchise changed his life as a kid with its unique blend of horror and comedy.
‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ sees the return of the Spengler family to the New York City firehouse where it all began. They join forces with the original Ghostbusters, who have established a top-secret research lab to take ghost-busting to new heights. Things go awry when their discovery of an ancient artefact unexpectedly unleashes an evil force, putting the world at risk of a second Ice Age.
Talking about the impact of the film on him as a child, Kenan said: “‘Ghostbusters’ changed my life as a kid – the unique blend of scares and comedy. I had never experienced anything like it in a movie theatre before. What really got me was the fun of it all, the joy on screen. It was that feeling,...
