Breathe takes place in the year 2039 when plant life has become extinct and, as a result, Earth’s oxygen levels are too low to sustain life on the surface. One family, Darius, Maya and their daughter Zora survive in an underground bunker making brief trips to the surface with an oxygen suit Darius created.
As the film opens, Darius’ father dies in an accident on the surface. Darius decides to risk the journey to bury him next to his mother. Months later, he hasn’t returned, then Tess and Lucas turn up claiming to know what happened to him.
Writer Doug Simon and director Stefon Bristol are short on details about how Breathe’s world came to be. We’re simply told that Darius was an engineer and a prepper,...

"Think about your daughter and do the right thing!" Capstone Pictures has revealed an official trailer for a sci-fi survival thriller titled Breathe, the latest by a director named Stefon Bristol, who also made the small scale sci-fi comedy See You Yesterday previously. This is his latest creation, directing a script about a future on an uninhabitable Earth - as depicted with a heavy orange filter. Lots of climate change near-future sci-fi movies doing this nowadays. Air-supply is scarce in the near future, forcing a mother and daughter to fight to survive when two strangers arrive desperate for an oxygenated haven inside their bunker. Breathe stars Jennifer Hudson and Quvenzhané Wallis (from Beasts of the Southern Wild) as mother and daughter, with Milla Jovovich, Sam Worthington, Common, Raúl Castillo, James Saito, Dan Martin, and Kaliswa Brewster. Yet another surprise sci-fi film arriving in theaters soon! It's also debuting on VOD on the same day,...

The ladies with two lead wins have included Ingrid Bergman, Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Sally Field, Jane Fonda, Jodie Foster, Glenda Jackson, Vivien Leigh, Luise Rainer, Meryl Streep and Hilary Swank. It’s been two decades since an epic fantasy film made history at the Oscars, winning every category in which it was nominated, and three women set new records. There weren’t many surprises at the 76th Academy Awards, but there were some memorable moments. Billy Crystal hosted for his eighth time on February 29, 2004. Read on for Gold Derby’s Oscars flashback 20 years ago to 2004.
It was finally Peter Jackson‘s time as the third installment of his “Lord of the Rings” trilogy earned him a trio of awards. Despite numerous nominations, the first two films failed to make big showings; however, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” not only claimed Best Picture, but won all 11 categories in which it was nominated. Peter Ramsey, Caleeb Pinkett Producing Live-Action Feature Adaptation Of Comic Book ‘The Storm Clan’
Exclusive: Academy Award winner Peter Ramsey (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) and former Overbook head Caleeb Pinkett (Cobra Kai) are set to produce a live-action feature adaptation of The Storm Clan, the comic book created by Dallas Jackson and Joe Casey, which marks the first title from Jackson’s new company DJ Classicz Comix.
Jackson and Casey will pen the script, with former Lionsgate exec Jorge Alfaro to serve as an EP.
A sci-fi action adventure story, The Storm Clan watches as an ex-military weapons engineer trains his five adopted children to be undercover hi-tech/martial-arts thieves wearing an invincible bionic-body armor. Previously orphaned, the teenagers gifted with bionic technology see it provide them with the opportunity to protect themselves from the threats of the streets, also empowering them to take advantage of life instead of being taken advantage of, and most importantly, giving them comfort and sense of belonging within a family.

In “Porcelain War,” a resilient Ukrainian couple divide their time between two seemingly antithetical pursuits: When enterprising Slava Leontyev isn’t training fellow civilian soldiers in the ongoing fight against Russia’s invasion, he and his partner Anya Stasenko are skilled ceramic artists, casting and painting dainty porcelain figurines inspired by local nature and folklore. If the title already suggests something pointed in that disparity, this emotive debut by Leontyev and American co-director Brendan Bellomo leaves nothing to chance in ensuring we get it: Porcelain, we are told, is “fragile but everlasting, and can be restored after hundreds of years.” Lest the point still be lost on us, the couple’s combined voiceover later offers a blunter paraphrase: “Ukraine is like porcelain — easy to break, but impossible to destroy.”
The metaphor is clear enough, then. Whether it’s quite complex enough to sustain a feature-length documentary is another question. “Porcelain War” thrives on contrast,...

The media was not quick to embrace Black creatives nor has Juneteenth long been something on its radar. Few directors have had as good a three-year run of movies as Peter Bogdanovich did from 1971-73 with "The Last Picture Show," "What's Up, Doc?," and "Paper Moon." Each one demonstrated his ability to create big ensembles of people who all feel like fully realized people that you could easily follow off-screen and imagine their whole life.
Consequently, he directed six different actors to Oscar nominations in that span and three of them won. The first two were Cloris Leachman and Ben Johnson for "The Last Picture Show," both of whom were veteran character actors. The third, though, was someone making their feature film debut. Not only was this her first movie, she was just 10 years old when she won. That person was Tatum O'Neal,...

With “Peter Pan and Wendy,” Disney sets out to bring the boy who refused to grow up into the 21st century — not literally, like those taxing live-action/cartoon hybrids, where computer-generated Smurfs get loose in Manhattan or Tom and Jerry wreak havoc in a high-end hotel. The studio’s latest remake is still set in Edwardian England, the way both J.M. Barrie’s play and the animated feature it inspired were. But the sensibility is very much of the moment, as director David Lowery (who did an admirable job of updating “Pete’s Dragon” for Disney) refreshes the 1953 classic according to contemporary priorities.

Age is just a number and it’s a sign that we’re all getting very, very old because we might actually get our first male acting Oscar winner who was born in the 1990s this year.
No man who entered this world in the ’90s has won an Oscar in either acting category yet. There are three currently in the running, two in Best Actor — Austin Butler (“Elvis”), who was born in 1991, and Paul Mescal (“Aftersun”), who was born in 1996 — and one in Best Supporting Actor, Barry Keoghan (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), who was born in 1992. But it’s Butler who has the best shot to take home the gold as he’s locked in a three-man battle with Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) and Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) for the prize. Butler, who’s already bagged the Best Drama Actor Golden Globe for his turn as Elvis Presley,...

Awards season always turns up note-worthy moments: showstopping outfits, witty speeches or egregious faux-pas are instantly turned into memes and circulated endlessly on social media.
In 2021, one moment in particular captivated viewers worldwide, and that was watching eight-year-old actor Alan Kim – dressed in a tuxedo – tear up while accepting a Critics Choice Award for his scene-stealing part in the critically acclaimed film Minari.
After a successful season, however, which included a Bafta nod, the young star was eventually shut out of the Oscars. It was a shame – in a year of history-making nominations for the Academy Awards, seeing Kim recognised would have been the cherry on top.
But it was always a long shot. Child actors are a welcome but infrequent inclusion at the Oscars – their rarity though, does make every instance especially memorable.

This year, women directors – and their women-centric subjects – swept the awards at Sundance Film Festival. Three women directors – Madeleine Gavin, Maryam Keshavarz, and Noora Niasari – won Audience Awards for their films on North Korea (“Beyond Utopia”), intergenerational motherhood (“The Persian Version”), and custody in diaspora (“Shayda”). Portraits of masculinity were also celebrated as well. First-time feature filmmaker Sing J. Lee won the Directing Award for his touching portrait of masculinity and fatherhood in “The Accidental Getaway Driver,” while Sauvnik Kaur’s intimate documentary on brotherhood “Against The Tide” took home a Special Jury Award. After two years of isolation and virtual festival-ing, it seems that stories of tenderness appealed over aggressive storytelling at Park City this year.
“This year’s Festival has been an extraordinary experience,” said Joana Vicente, Sundance Institute CEO. “The artists that comprise the 2023 Sundance Film Festival have demonstrated a sense of urgency and dedication to excellence in independent film.

The Oscar front-runners for Best Picture were “Argo” and “Lincoln” with a possibility of “Django Unchained,” “Life of Pi” or “Silver Linings Playbook.” It seems like just a few years ago we were lining up to see these films in theaters, and debating who’d win big on the industry’s most celebrated night. But it’s actually been a decade since we were surprised by some snubs, astonished at some wins and a bit flummoxed by the host singing about “boobies.” The ceremony is always at its best when shockers abound, and with an irreverent host like Seth MacFarlane, it’s not surprising that February 24, 2013, was a roller coaster night. Let’s enjoy an Oscar flashback 10 years ago.
MacFarlane infamously opened the 85th Academy Awards ceremony by communicating with a “future” Captain Kirk (William Shatner), who offered examples of how MacFarlane would ruin the ceremony, such as the number “We Saw Your Boobs.

The distribution deals that make headlines at the Sundance Film Festival can feel like engagement announcements (“‘The Big Sick’ will marry Amazon Studios for 12 million!”). Those deals mean the world to the parties involved. But even if you’re a critic like me, watching the action from the sidelines, it’s easy to get invested in the drama of watching the deals happen. It can feel like sports betting, like seeing your kid get into college, like the first draft of the awards race, or like the story of Cinderella. Which movies will be invited to the ball?
The happy ending you crave is when a movie you love finds the right home — the ideal boutique distributor, say, for a great documentary that’s going to need tender loving care, or a bigger studio with deep pockets shelling out for a drama that has popular potential. When a movie gets...

When the 2023 Sundance began on Thursday evening, there was a giddiness in the air after two years of virtual festivals. For filmmakers and audiences, it was thrilling just to be back in crowded theaters to watch movies and bask in the Sundance buzz that, let’s face it, makes a lot of indie films look better at 6,900 feet than they will at sea level.
Sustaining the giddiness is, of course, more difficult than getting there in the first place. So as the delayed-gratification Sundance’s opening weekend nears its conclusion, it’s hard not to acknowledge that the initial rejoicing also required ignoring the fact that the movie business itself has been rocked, with theaters closing and box-office numbers still far from pre-covid numbers. And, oh yes, covid is still with us.

Any best picture lineup of any industry organization that does not include A24’s “Close,” Utopia’s “Holy Spider” and the doc “Sr.,” which is still seeking a distributor, shall be declared null and void…at least in my mind.
In Telluride, all three films played like gangbusters. “Holy Spider,” which premiered at Cannes and won best actress for Zar Amir Ebrahimi, is looking likely to be Denmark’s submission for international feature. Based on the true story of Saeed Hanaei (played by Mehdi Bajestani), a serial killer who targeted sex workers and killed 16 women from 2000 to 2001 in Mashhad, Iran, the film tells a fictional account of a female journalist (Ebrahimi) who investigates the case.
The suspense thriller evokes “The Silence of the Lambs” (1991) and “Dexter,” particularly the show’s sublime fourth, Trinity Killer-focused season. Both lead actors are worthy of Academy attention, and writer and director Ali Abbasi, who helmed the 2018 hit “Border,...

Since the TV academy began regularly honoring original music scores in the 1960s, there has essentially always been a clear distinction between compositions for continuing and limited series. The Best Music for Limited Series Emmy category was established early on in order to adequately recognize the music behind single-season or one-off scripted programs apart from traditional comedy and drama series. This year’s five contenders are about as eclectic as can be, with plots that collectively span multiple centuries and continents.
The current Best Music for Limited Series nominees are “1883” (Paramount+), “Moon Knight” (Disney+), “Station Eleven” (HBO Max), “A Very British Scandal” (Prime Video) and “The White Lotus” (HBO). To determine which one is most likely to take the gold, let’s take a look at each score individually. Be sure to make your Emmy predictions in this and 26 other Creative Arts categories by September 3.

In an encouraging sign for specialized product, Sony/3000 Pictures/Hello Sunshine’s Where the Crawdads Sing has crossed the 100M benchmark globally. Getting there on Tuesday, the feature adaptation of the Delia Owens novel sits at 78.8M domestic and 21.5M from the international box office.
Crawdads initially released domestically in mid-July with 17M; a good win for a 24M production before P&a, and ahead of other female-skewing novels on screen pre-pandemic. It also charmed audiences at 96 on Rotten Tomatoes, despite a critical score of 34.
The Daisy Edgar-Jones led movie is directed by Olivia Newman (First Match) from a screenplay by Lucy Alibar (Beasts Of The Southern Wild).
It’s on a staggered offshore release, still with Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Korea and Japan to come.
To date, the top overseas markets are the UK (8.6M), Australia (6.7M), Germany (1.3M), New Zealand (1M) and France (821K).

Brussels-based company Best Friend Forever has acquired Laura Baumeister’s feature debut “Daughter of Rage” ahead of its world premiere at Toronto and San Sebastian film festivals.
Baumeister previously directed the shorts “Isabel im Winter” which played at Cannes Critics’ Week in 2014 and “Ombligo De Agua” which screened in Rotterdam and Clermont-Ferrand in 2018.
The Spanish-language film follows Maria, an 11-year-old girl who lives with her mother Lilibeth at the edge of a massive waste-disposal site in Nicaragua. Their future depends on selling a litter of purebred puppies to a local thug. After the deal falls through, Maria is dropped off by her mother at a recycling center in the city and realizes her mother won’t be coming back for her. Feeling lost, bewildered and angry, Maria meets Tadeo, an imaginative new friend who is determined to help her to reunite with her mother.

I felt ill when the news broke May 11 that my go-to cinema, Landmark Theatres’ flagship Westside location on Pico Boulevard, was shutting down at the end of the month. I have been going to this complex religiously — call it my house of movie worship — ever since its founding 15 years ago. For at least the past decade, my partner and I would have date night there nearly every Saturday night after enjoying dinner downstairs from the theater at the now defunct Westside Tavern. It was a weekly ritual I always looked forward to, until the Covid pandemic kept us from going these past two years.
There is just so much I cherished about the theater. You could always catch the latest and greatest first run indie and foreign films there. The Landmark chain of cinemas was the first national art circuit in our country. The people who worked at the Pico...

Check out the brand new vignette and trailer for Where The Crawdads Sing featuring music by Taylor Swift.
Star Daisy Edgar-Jones and producer Reese Witherspoon talk about the movie.
From the best-selling novel comes a captivating mystery. Where The Crawdads Sing tells the story of Kya, an abandoned girl who raised herself to adulthood in the dangerous marshlands of North Carolina. For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” haunted Barkley Cove, isolating the sharp and resilient Kya from her community. Drawn to two young men from town, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world; but when one of them is found dead, she is immediately cast by the community as the main suspect. As the case unfolds, the verdict as to what actually happened becomes increasingly unclear, threatening to reveal the many secrets that lay within the marsh.

But when a mysterious couple arrives claiming to know her husband and his fate, Hudson’s character tentatively agrees to let them into their bunker. But are they all they appear to be?
Capstone Global will introduce the title to buyers at the upcoming Marche du Film at Cannes.

If you’re reading this, you’ve likely already listened to Arcade Fire’s sixth album We, which is not as phenomenal as the early hype may have suggested and not as disappointing as their last outing. One of the album’s highlights, however, is Unconditional I (Lookout Kid), perhaps the band’s ultimate dad rock ballad. Following the album, the band have now released the official music video.
Directed by Benh Zeitlin and edited by Affonso Gonçalves, the video features a swirl of youthful imagery and gives some anthropomorphic qualities to inflatable air dancers (clearly having a comeback this summer with Jordan Peele’s Nope as well), while also revealing that onstage “attack” at their recent show was, indeed, staged.
“Zeitlin’s approach employs fragmented images revolving around a set of thematic ideas — youth, loneliness, pleasure, pain — all converging around unconditional love, and all using wind as the central visual mechanism,...

British star Daisy Edgar-Jones is showcasing a stellar year across television and movies. Best known for her breakout turn as Marianne Sheridan in Hulu’s “Normal People” (2020), the 23-year-old sensation has two potential Emmy vehicles. First, for her buzzy turn in FX’s limited series “Under the Banner of Heaven,” Variety has exclusively learned she will be submitted for Emmy consideration in supporting actress limited. In addition, she will submit for lead actress limited series or TV movie for her work in Hulu and Searchlight Pictures’ movie “Fresh,” which premiered at Sundance earlier this year.
Classically trained in theater, Edgar-Jones is making waves in Hollywood, especially after missing out on a nom for “Normal People” despite recognition from BAFTA TV and Critics Choice Awards. Now, alongside two new leading men, Andrew Garfield and Sebastian Stan — two of the biggest stars from the Marvel Cinematic Universe — plenty of the Television Academy...

If you’re looking for new movies and TV shows to watch on Amazon Prime Video in April, you’ve come to the right place. This month doesn’t bring a ton in terms of new Prime Video originals, but there are a few noteworthy titles. “Outer Range,” premiering April 15, is a new series that’s essentially “Yellowstone” but sci-fi. Josh Brolin plays a rancher fighting for his land in Wyoming who encounters a supernatural twist.
There’s also “A Very British Scandal,” which stars Claire Foy and Paul Bettany and focuses on the divorce of the Duke and Dutchess of Argyll, and the second season of the animated series “Undone” on April 29.
In terms of Prime Video movies, Chris Pine and Thandiwe Newton star in the thriller ”All the Old Knives” which is streaming on April 8, and noteworthy library titles being added in April include “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,...

Though the confusingly named initiative “FX on Hulu” is on its way out, FX is still bringing premium television to Hulu in the meantime.
Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by FX limited series Under the Banner of Heaven. This adaptation of the non-fiction book by John Krakauer stars Andrew Garfield as a Mormon police detective whose faith is shaken when investigating a murder involving the church.
It’s not all just FX on the TV side of things for Hulu this month, however. The streamer is debuting second seasons of its series The Hardy Boys (April 6) and Woke (April 8). There isn’t much to report from Hulu’s original movies arm aside from true crime documentary Captive Audience on April 21. But that doc about one family’s 50-year journey for justice sounds like a must-watch.
April 1 sees the usual arrival of library film titles. Looper,...

Good news for all you Brolin-heads! Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by one very intriguing TV project starring Thanos himself.
The Josh Brolin-starring Outer Range premieres April 15 and looks like it could be a wild ride. The synopsis is terse and reads “A rancher fighting for his land and family stumbles upon an unfathomable mystery at the edge of Wyoming’s wilderness, forcing a confrontation with the Unknown in ways both intimate and cosmic in the untamable American West.” That, combined with an enigmatic first trailer, has our interest piqued.
Also on the TV side of things this month is season 2 of the beautifully rotoscoped series Undone on April 29. Rosa Salazar returns as Alma, a woman who may have become unstuck in time to help save her scientist father’s life. Before that, the British TV series The Outlaws makes its debut...
