Please do not read any reviews before watching this drama series!
marissareeka25 July 2023
At first, I was a little bit surprised to see the rating of 'Immortal Samsara' got in IMDb. Knowing that it had been on my watch-list for quite sometime, I was so ready to watch it anytime soon. Yet, seeing the low rating made me postpone watching it. It was disheartening to see 'Immortal Samsara' did not get proper recognition in China. As an international fan and a big fan of Cheng Yi and Yang Zi, it was quite sad to see they did not get what they deserved.

A few days ago, I could not wait any longer, so I started watching it when I had free time. I really wanted to know what made some people did not enjoy or appreciate this drama series. Frankly speaking, I enjoyed a few episodes in the beginning as it was very funny to see how the two main characters, Yin Yuan and Yan Dan, played by Cheng Yi and Yang Zi, always had things to bicker about. For those who had watched Cheng Yi in 'Love and Redemption' and Yang Zi in 'Ashes of Love' would probably think 'Immortal Samsara' as the combination of those two, and I must admit I felt it too. However, it did not stop me from enjoying it and see how things would end. So, if any of you have a plan to watch it, my suggestion is please do not read any reviews of it beforehand.

I was not sorry at all for spending my time watching this amazing series, with total of 59 episodes and 2 special episodes of 7-8 minutes each, I felt very excited as well as blessed for being able to witness Cheng Yi and Yang Zi's beautiful chemistry and fantastic acting. Superb! Great work!

Love this Chinese Xianxia show - Gorgeous!
c-0557123 July 2022
Immortal Samsara is such a GORGEOUS, romantic, magical, fantasy Xianxia show! Love love the Hanfu (Traditional Chinese Clothing) costume, and the beautiful cast - especially Cheng Yi, Yang Zi, Meng Ziyi, and Li Xinze! The traditional Chinese heaven palaces and places are well, heavenly, and the special effects are STUNNING.

If you love Ashes of Love or Love and Redemption, you will love this show!

You can find this show on Youku (advanced viewing) and Youtube. You should definitely watch it! :)

I am confused about the ratings here? This c drama is absolutely stunning
hanalisss21 September 2022
This is the first c drama that actually moves me as much as Ashes of Love ( I miss Deng Lun so much!) It gives me the same vibe a d you can tell the quality of the production.

The Effects are basically exceptional, one of the best i have seen in c dramas, and also the fight choreography is great, although its more about supernatural powers rather than actual fighting but it is very enjoyable because it doesn't look fake at all.

The script os also very original and unique and it is not predictable whatsoever. The stories and characters keep surprising you and the amount of twists keeps you hooked.

It is quite an emotional story and I am not going to deny it, I found myself invested emotionally many times! I felt the love, the anger, the frustration, the the tenderness.... All their feelings of friendship, lovers, family and of course enemies.

I liked the acting too! I have watched a few dramas of the main characters and I have enjoyed them a lot, this one didn't disappoint either.

I have to mention the Costumes, makeup, hair pieces and hairstyles are very beautiful too, and of course the photography and scenery of the world they have created is fantastic.

All round is a 10, the only thing I felt was rushed was the ending. I have the feeling the ending was going to be the episode 59 but they regretted it and they made a quick fix with the two short specials to change it.

I'm not complaining but felt lacking on details and depth. Other than that, perfect.

Watch it!

Almost Dropped It, but...
Babyface36926 August 2022
Yes, i almost dropped this drama, but thanks God, i tried to skip episodes and went directly to watch ep 15, the forgotten river scenes, it surprised me since the plot is now become interesting and the act was superb, the feeling portrayed by Yangzi and Chengyi was so real and beautifully executed.

And the rest is history, since its now become one of the best xianxia drama i have ever seen.

*and ofcourse i get back to watch early episodes that i skipped before to get some foundation of the story.

And as usual, ChengYi's acting never dissappoint us, he can ensoul any character to become alive. His acting is out of this world and for this reason only, its worth watching since its rare and difficult to find such quality of acting in any dramas nowadays.

Dont worry, the plot will get more interesting and after watching more episodes, we will find that honestly the plot is even better than classic popular TMPOB or AOL.

So if you feel the plot is flat, the cgi is bad, etc... just hang on, or just skipped to ep 9, it started to get interesting from this episode and so on.

If you are xianxia lovers, IS is a must watch, period.

The Best Xianxia Fantasy Drama!
talatalalia29 August 2022
Immortal Samsara is the best xianxia fantasy drama ever. If you like Love and Redemption and Ashes of Love, you will love this drama. The drama starts out slow, but it gets really addicting from episode 6. Cheng Yi and Yang Zi's acting in this drama are outstanding. I'm so blown away by how well they portray their characters, I can feel the pains that they're going through and they have amazing chemistry. They are the best male and female lead duo. Cheng Yi was born to play an immortal deity who gives it all up for love and ends up being hurt by it. I can already imagine those tear-filled scenes.

It took six months to get through this series.

Warning: Spoilers
Xianxia is quintessentially a contrast of light and dark, good and bad, gods and demons, and it is stylistically depicted by monochromatic character and color themes with slight differences in plotlines. If I'm being honest, this genre is my least favorite; notwithstanding, I have seen a couple that are slightly less ridiculous than most with my fave being Love Between Fairy and Devil (LBFAD) and my least fave being this tedious and pretentious Immortal Samasara.

Firstly, Yang Zi, the lead actress, is such a one-trick pony who seems content to play different variations of the same "dim and somewhat smart" character which she played not only in IS (Immortal Samsara) but also in Ashes of Love and Legend of the Dragon Pearl. If someone edits clips of her performances in these dramas, I bet you wouldn't know they were three different series.

And therein lies the problem not only with Yang Zi but also with Xianxia as a genre. It's too stylized with little to no room for maneuvering of plots or themes. There's the demons are bad and heavenly beings (HB) are good trope where the heavenly beings fight endlessly for dominance with a side plot of some HB prince who happens to fall in love with some lower HB twig or leaf spirit. Like clockwork, the writer never misses to give us the useless fairy with the baby voice (one of the worst aspects of LBFAD) who later comes into her power after being tossed around and abused by the higher HBs. Toss in a love quadrangle, some men in bad wigs, and the most watered-down set props which, given this is all CGI, seems like a wasted opportunity to liven up an otherwise bleary set of white clouds and grayscale.

Did I mention how much I hate the color and style? Sigh.

Anyway, IS is about a HB prince who falls for a flower; sadly, love is forbidden in heaven and they have to go through three different time periods of heartbreaks and forgotten memories whilst fighting some obscure bad guys who did some bad things. That's all.

More than just love
shihching_c7 September 2022
I was waiting for this drama to air since its filming was complete. I looked forward to this series because of the story. I also trust that Yang Zi and Cheng Yi could do justice to their characters. As expected, they didn't disappoint. Whenever they are in the same scenes, they tell the story of two fated lovers' sweetness and sorrow. They are able to draw the audience into their characters.

Even though the series is based on Taoist and Buddhist religious framework (e.g. People or objects achieve deity status through cultivation), the overarching theme is to love and care for the world, an essential teaching of Confucianism. The latter dictates the main characters' behaviors and decisions. For example, Ying Yuan's name literally means "answer to the deep (the world down below)." As a deity of high rank, Ying Yuan is not aloof but very into the well-being of the world.

The ending of the story came as a surprise to me because it was unlike the other series of Xianxia genre (a combination of Chinese martial arts and folklores or classical stories). As I thought more about the character of Ying Yuan, his choice for the love of the world than his own was reasonable. Yan Dan grew to know his heart and understand his cause. At the end, she forgave him and supported him. Her decision to follow Ying Yuan was understandable. The ending is actually very uplifting. All Ying Yuan's life, he thinks that he didn't deserve to be alive because he was born of a sinful father. However, his very own existence became the salvation of the world. He answered this world with his love even though he had to give up his own.

I love how Yangzi and Cheng Yu portrayed their characters in this drama. I earnestly hope that they can collaborate again.

Surpasses even Ashes of Love in terms of plot. This show has totally blown my mind ! Best Xianxia drama of 2022.
priyagoswami-9447226 October 2022
Usually I dont like shows with such length. But Thank God I watched it and my time was totally, totally worth for it.

Although you may find 8th to 14th episodes a bit draggy but trust me first 15 episodes are the foundation of the future events and are crucial for the upcoming episodes.

And once they come in Mortal realm you will watch the episodes by replaying it again and again. Such is the storyline, execution, cinematography, casting , their sizzling chemistry and superb acting.

Talking about cast :- Cheng Yi - Oh his eyes do all the talking. He has perfectly act 3 different roles in this very single show. And I am totally in love with these 3 different characters.

Yang Zhi - She is fabulous, charming, adorable, pretty, smart, bold, funny, great actress as always. She is like life of the show. She balances the seriousness of this show with her charms.

Story:- As the name says it all, Immortal life's tragic love story. Their story holds you even though sometimes it is painfull to watch. But not that painfull that you wanna drop it instead you long for more. That kind of show is this.

Why it surpasses AOL in terms of plot ?

  • AOL plot was straight and predictable with great acting. Whereas this show is unpredictable in terms of storyline with also great acting and its thrilling when you wait for " Aah what will be the next thing ?"

MUST WATCH for XIANXIA FANS.

Not bad,
sillylulu-744269 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I like it even if some reviews r negative i still think the story is good and the chemestry between YZ and CZ is on the roof . Those two can make u believe they r really inlove and isn it this the purpose to show us great story and unbreacable love . Yet some flows here and there is oki , maybe because the chemestry between those 2 or because the story itself is deep it made me abit sad for the ending . I wish they to give more happy endings in series as such after all emotional changes and ups and downs while story goes on would be nice to see for the good guys to get happy endings.this is first time i see YZ and CZ acting together and i love it , they look amazing together . True would not disagree that the story is so familiar , but each story has its own twist and the genre of the series is suppose to be tuff love and hardships. Still i like it and hope they release few more episodes or even next season and to have HAPPy endding :P.

A Strong Romantic Fantasy!
KuvioH21 September 2023
Based on the novel Chen Xiang Ru Xie by Su Mo, Immortal Samsara follows Ying Yuan (Cheng Yi) the Sovereign Lord and protector of a fantastic heavenly realm inhabited by deities and spirits who live long, peaceful lives above the clouds, and Yan Dan (Yang Zi), one of two rare four-leaf Lotus Blossoms who just wants to live a care-free life.

When both lives entwine, consequences, misunderstands, secrets and conspiracy is the name of the game, and romance can be what breaks everything in between.

A strong romantic fantasy drama with brilliant character performances, visually stunning CGI and cinematography as well as a beautiful romantic storyline, many great action sequences and some serious tearjerker moments thrown in!

Unbiased Review
quotation-0309028 October 2023
Some wrote a very biased review because of their favorite LBFAD which also occupies the same timeslot as Immortal samsara. (Of course, a competitor fan indeed!) As a fan of both series, Immortal Samsara is worthy of watching too. It perfectly portrays the elements of a xianxia drama. I can see the hardwork and effort of the cast as well as the entire production team. Give it also a chance so you will see the beauty of the series. I hope they will also win a lot of awards for their hardwork. I truly believe that the cast and the entire production team deserves an award too. I rarely finish a drama but when I do I will stick and be addicted to it like a gum. I'm starting to shift from LBFAD to IS..hahaha.

This is the only drama with no filler episodes.. I enjoy watching the entire show.. There is a sense, flow, and the story is well written. Usually the mortal realm part is boring but in this drama, I enjoy watching it.

I believe the people who gave this series a negative biased review are the fans of the previous CP of the leads in their previous projects, fan of other "competitor dramas", or basher of the leads. I know it because I'm like that too in the past but now I become maturer and respectful of other peoples hardwork.

I pray Cheng Yi and Yang Zi will have a third collaboration as the leads in the near future...Fighting!
