River run, run
In Platonic Season 1 Episode 7, Sylvia and Will face challenging work situations, emphasizing the importance of her return to the workforce. However, early indicators indicate her imminent demise at a law firm, with her failure at Tobey, Friedkin, Kwong, & Zelman being a spectacular outcome. The comedy continues to thrive in this episode. Rose Byrne portrays Sylvia, a capable yet socially insecure woman with a generation gap, creating a cringe comedy situation. Platonic effectively navigates the cringey edge of its content with humor, as demonstrated in Season 1 Episode 5, "My Wife's Boyfriend." Despite initial discomfort, unexpected and undeniably humorous moments make the awkwardness worth it. Sylvia's first and last day of work is a fun ride with laughs. Byrne's nuanced character showcases a quirky, silly personality, making her a joy to watch. The break room scene is highly cringe-worthy, comparable to the Dodger Dog scene in Episode 5. The Aussie girl's introduction is brilliant, showcasing the importance of timing in comedy. Sylvia struggles with connecting with Gen Z individuals, while Will is more comfortable with youthful trends and language. Will and Lord Rotero communicate with "my man," but he doesn't fully embrace the hipster milieu of twenty-somethings and points out absurdities in the most amusing ways. The episode evokes a sense of importance in Sylvia's life, as she wakes up on her new job day. Will's moments with Sylvia are equally important, as their friendship is priceless, reminiscent of Lord Rotero's original. The cringe comedy in episode 7 was unbearable, but it was also a positive development for Sylvia. Her humiliation was similar to Will's experience with Peyton, adding to the series' adult experiences. Sylvia's misfortune may be a blessing as she returns home, but her excitement to work will dampen her mood. Platonic's flexibility has been impressive, as the creators have embraced the idea that a narrative with rigid dimensions focusing on just one theme would be dull. The new ideas and fresh perspectives are appreciated. Katie is excited to leave Sylvia's company but will miss her. Stewart and Charlie discuss Sylvia's difficulty fitting in with 20-year-old associates, who are overworked due to the law firm. Will has developed a new blackberry sour taste beer that Reggie and Andy enjoy but faces high ingredients costs. Will aims to sell the limited edition bottles for a significant loss to establish the bar's prestige. Reggie and Andy are caught in a problem and request Will to take the rest of the day off. Jessica, the HR representative, introduces Sylvia to the firm and introduces her to the HR department. Sylvia is initially uncomfortable and makes an offensive joke against an associate. Despite her efforts, she cannot resolve the situation and apologizes to Andrew. However, Sylvia falls asleep while working late, losing her balance and colliding with a painting of Friedkin's portrait. This incident highlights the challenges faced by Sylvia in her new role. Sylvia notices a tear in her boss's painting and seeks help from Will, who uses white-out to make the tear more visible. Audrey connects them to Lord Roetero, a local art restorer she knows. Audrey and Will patronize him for suggesting a "rejigged" version of the painting, and Sylvia plans to restore it to its original shape. Audrey convinces Rotero to keep the substance intact and mentions a party at Will's bar. Will is shocked to hear this, but she goes with Sylvia. Reggie and Andy had given him the day off to launch their Kamboocha drink, which Will was not on board with. Andy expresses disapproval of Will's idea of losing money to establish a prestige beer line. Sylvia is shocked to see Katie getting intimate with Andy, and Will loses his cool as he sees Peyton at the party. Sylvia and Will take a private moment to process the events, and the former reveals she called the authorities over a gas leak, bringing the party to a stop.
