Brilliantly executed, albeit kind of a downer

For all of the various plot threads Season 3 has laid out, 'Coalition' doesn't develop said narrative so much as brings it barreling towards collision. It's largely a guessing game as to who will bite it and who will be left standing, and everyone's playing everybody else. Even Raylan, doing his part to pull some extra legal strings. But when the dust settles, Dickie's end of the story's been tied up, the money's gone to the person who really deserves it, and Boyd and Quarles are headed towards their mutual ends. It's an action=packed episode bearing a surprise at every turn.

It unfortunately also ends in the murder of one of the more likable background characters in a sad and shocking final image.

Underwhelming ending

Most episodes are solid but the ending of this was unbelievable. That is a lot coming from this series. We are supposed to believe a coked-up person was able to get the drop and hit both his targets. Before he shot the 2nd guy he had also been on fire. They should call this episode Fantasy Island.

P. S. Come to find out it was a different person who shot the 2nd person. This however also doesn't make sense. They had no motive to shot them. In fact they have more motive to shot the other guy that was coked-up.
