It's been a couple of months since I watched episode 5 of "Mash and Peas" on Youtube, but I always had it in mind to come back and pick what I can from the rest of the series. Episode Six is a parody of a number of staples of Children's TV from the late 1980'.
Segment one is Pray Away, a parody of the "Play Away" show, itself a spin off from "Play School". The pair play overbearing hosts forcing a pro-Christian message into their skits and gags. It was, if I'm honest, a little light on actual gags beyond its initial conceit.
Segment two is Take Heart and Party, a parody of "Take Hart" an art and crafts show presented by Tony Hart. Lucas play Toe Knee Heart and Walliams a hapless assistant, who despises him. This was a lot better, nailing Hart's uncomfortable screen presence, if not his artistic talents and adding much darker gags involving the Gallery and Morph's wife's infidelity.
Segment three is Jackanory, a parody of . . . "Jackanory" in which Walliams plays David Knickerless, who I am sure must be a parody of someone, who begins to read a pleasant children's story, before he's interrupted and replaced by Lucas playing a parody of Willie Rushton, who in turn is replaced by Paul Putner, who is parodying Judi Dench. This again lacks jokes beyond its initial idea.
Why don't you? Is a parody of the magazine show also called "Why Don't You?" but again is rather uninspired in terms of actual jokes, relative to the premise, which appears to be a joke about the shows regional production structure.
Truth be told, beyond the Tony Hart section, there isn't much to enjoy in this episode and precious little of Edgar Wright's trademark direction style.
