After her recent cameo in Khoobsurat, Aditi Rao Hydari will now play the famous Miss Havisham in the Bollywood adaptation of the Charles Dickens' novel Great Expectations titled Fitoor. While the elder version of the wealthy spinster will be portrayed by the evergreen actress Rekha, Aditi Rao Hydari will be appearing in the film as a younger version of the actress. Set amidst the beautiful locales of Kashmir, Fitoor traces the journey of the artist Noor who meets the charming and graceful Firdaus (who later turns his muse) and adding the twist to their love story is the eccentric Begum. Parts of the film will also be shot in Delhi and London. Aditya Roy Kapur and Katrina Kaif have been roped in for the lead roles. That Poor Dream Directed by Jess Chayes Presented by The Assembly at the New Ohio Theatre 154 Christopher St., New York, NY October 4th - 26th, 2014
That Poor Dream was written and developed collectively by the members of the Assembly Theater Project, which describes its goals as creating performances that both "address the complexities of our ever-changing world" and ground artists and audience alike in “a profound sense of community;” the play transposes Charles Dickens's novel Great Expectations onto the social topography of current-day New York City. The play recontextualizes the social and economic rise and fall of the original, Dickensian Pip in a world of penthouse apartments and $1,000 omelets, a move that highlights that while the world may be "ever-changing," the class systems of Victorian England and the twenty-first century United States remain closer and more rigidly exploitative than we like to tell ourselves. Indeed, the Metro-North train that...

Well, that's what happened this week when five models dressed up as Charles Dickens's infamous character and stalked the Underground.
Why?! I hear you ask. It's to promote the screening of Great Expectations on TV channel Drama this Sunday (May 25) at 6pm. If you miss it, they're repeating it the next day at 4pm.
That'll be the three-part BBC version of the story, adapted by Sarah Phelps, starring Ray Winstone as Magwitch, Gillian Anderson as Miss Havisham, Douglas Booth as Pip, Vanessa Kirby as Estella and David Suchet as Jaggers.
The models spent a whopping three hours in make-up with Deanna V'lcevska, Nicci Jackson and Julia Townend to get the look, meeting at 8.40am at Big Ben, marking the...

Great Expectations
PG-13, 2 Hrs., 8 Mins.
After a recent string of literary misfires — Anna Karenina and Romeo and Juliet come to mind — Mike Newell’s version of the Charles Dickens classic is a welcome exception. The heartrending story of orphan boy Pip’s (Jeremy Irvine) sudden change in circumstances remains mostly untouched, but stellar performances by Helena Bonham Carter as iconic shut-in Miss Havisham and Ralph Fiennes as the convict Magwitch are the only frills this adaptation needs. Watching the latest "Great Expectations," one can't help but think Helena Bonham Carter has spent her entire career auditioning for the role of Miss Havisham. The jilted, wilted bride whose bitterness she carries into her dotage is the very picture of the wild-eyed, wilder-haired Carter.
Mike Newell, who gave us one of the most sumptuous looking Harry Potter pictures ("Goblet of Fire"), conjures up a lush, period-perfect version of the oft-filmed Charles Dickens tale of a poor boy whose act of kindness as a child is repaid, with interest -- and with a catch.
Newell and screenwriter David Nicholls move beyond the familiar "spoiler alert" beats of this over-familiar story -- a more definitive BBC / PBS miniseries aired just two years ago -- and aim for the periphery. Teens with a book report due pretty soon and Dickensian fans unite and rejoice, for Mike Newell‘s Great Expectations is finally seeing its U.S. release date. The trailer for the costume drama looks every bit like the dreary world Charles Dickens lays out for you in page one of his classic novel, with some much needed color provided by Helena Bonham Carter‘s Miss Havisham – truly the role she was born to play. For those who had to read “Jane Eyre” instead during their study groups, Great Expectations is the story of an orphan named Pip (Jeremy Irvine) who befriends an eccentric dowager named Miss Havisham (Bonham Carter) and falls in love with her beautiful ward Estella (Holliday Grainger); but since Havisham was betrayed by her love long ago (the tattered wedding gown any indication?), she’s trained Estella to hate men and destroy even cuties like young Pip. It...

Watch: Trailer For Mike Newell's 'Great Expectations' Featuring Ralph Fiennes & Helena Bonham Carter
Gotta admit, we sort of totally forgot about this movie entirely. After playing Tiff to rather muted notice last fall and being released all over the place elsewhere in the world, Mike Newell's "Great Expectations" is finally seeing release in stateside theaters. And well, it's certainly very costume drama-esque, as you might expect. Starring Jeremy Irvine in the lead role as Pip, with Helena Bonham Carter as Miss Havisham, Ralph Fiennes as Magwitch, and Holliday Grainger as Estella, the movie doesn't seem to offer much of a compelling reason to exist over previous film and TV incarnations, though our review out of Tiff did note there were some slight tweaks. However, it wasn't enough as "superficially there's a lot to admire, but few things to actually fall in love with. It falters under the weight of its expectations." Zing. But for Charles Dickens diehards, this is probably the equivalent...

If proof was ever needed that the opinions of critics aren’t the be all and end all when it comes to a film’s success, one need only look at last weekend’s big winner Nativity 2 : Danger in the Manger.
Much maligned by critics and savaged pretty much across the board, few (this humble writer included) gave it much notice and assumed it would struggle being released the same weekend as star-studded fair such as Silver Linings Playbook, End of Watch and Gambit.
Oh how little we know. Taking in an impressive £1.6 million in its opening weekend, Nativity 2 sits comfortably in third place in the Box Office Chart, making more than End of Watch and Gambit combined. With its broad family appeal and timely release date falling just when many folks are beginning to enter into the festive spirit, it looks set to dwarf the £5million total of its predecessor.

Aided by a sterling British cast, director Mike 'Four Weddings' Newell and writer David 'One Day' Nicholls do Charles Dickens proud with this faithful adaptation of what's arguably his finest work. Jeremy Irvine plays Pip, the humble country boy who becomes a gentleman thanks to an unknown benefactor. But his life has always been awash with strange characters, from the skulking convict Magwitch (Ralph Fiennes) to the bitter recluse Miss Havisham (Helena Bonham Carter) and her beautiful but icy ward Estella (Holliday Grainger).

Four Weddings and a Funeral director Mike Newell’s take on the Charles Dickens’ classic Great Expectations is a safe, play-by-numbers affair that neither excites nor bores but simply picks off key moments and retells the tale with some of the cream of British acting crop, plus some extravagant set design that you would expect from a big-screen budget.
The problem is this cinematic adaptation comes too soon after the BBC’s Christmas TV special so there is understandably an instant feeling of déjà vu when the opening scenes of the Kentish marshes roll, rather than something fresh to whet the appetite.

The actor, famed for his obsessive approach, has met his match in Dickens, playing Magwitch in Great Expectations and directing and starring in a film about the author. And then there was the time he could have played Bond …
Ralph Fiennes could have been a diplomat in a previous life – the low, patrician voice, and the clothes. He is dressed on the morning we meet with an elegance that would not disgrace a Frenchman: neat cardigan, fresh shirt, polished boots. We are in Soho, in post-production offices – an editing suite like a gone-wrong sitting room, with a bank of computers at right angles to a sofa.
He is, by a month, on the youthful side of 50. And he has a smile of such disarming sweetness that the first impression is that something has gone bizarrely wrong. It is only retrospectively that the oddity makes sense: what he does best as an actor is torment.

This year’s BFI London Film Festival offers several new films based on books, reflecting a common trend in modern cinema and the recent film industry and proving that intelligent story-telling is something that should transcend format and translate through alternate medium. In some cases this is just loosely inspired by, where others can be straight page to screen interpretations… Here’s some of the highlights:
Some of the key texts that follow this trend are Salman Rushdie’s debut screenplay for the European premiere adaptation of his Booker prize winning novel; Midnight’s Children. Directed by Deepa Mehta, this Official Competition film is a riveting allegorical saga that parallels the dramatic upheavals in one’s family history with the events that would define contemporary India. Salman Rushdie is conducting a Q&A on this and his career as a renowned cinephile on 15th October.

Temperatures dipping everywhere mean at least two things for the cinema: arthouse and adaptation releases are gearing up for their end-of-year showcases, and this year is certainly no slouch when it comes to high-profile directors advertising their latest creations. On the adaptation side of proceedings, Mike Newell's riff on Charles Dickens' classic “Great Expectations” has just landed with a new poster, and true to form it shows off the youthful cast in period décor surrounded by their British acting mentors. This time around featuring Jeremy Irvine and Holliday Grainger as Pip and Estella, who fall in love under the imposing presence of Miss Havisham (Helena Bonham Carter), the film also features the always-reliable Ralph Fiennes as Magwitch, the man who could provide some safety to the couple in jeopardy. Whether Newell's film will reach the heights of David Lean or Alfonso Cuaron's takes remains to be seen,...

With Charles Dickens' bicentenary in full swing, Mike Newell's Great Expectations brings one of his best-loved novels back to the screen with a youthful cast - showed off in this new poster - and old-fashioned storytelling vim. If youthful casts and old-fashioned storytelling aren't your thing, it's worth pointing out that Dickens' hardy perennial has sustained many movie adaptations - most recently in Alfonso Cuarón's modern take - without losing its lustre. The latest man to tackle it also knows a thing or two about steep and perilous character arcs, what with that Harry Potter film behind him. In Newell's version Pip (Jeremy Irvine) and Estella (Holliday Grainger) do their anguished dance under the eye of Helena Bonham Carter's bitter harridan Miss Havisham. The shady figure on the left, Magwitch (Ralph Fiennes), could be the answer to the young man's problems. Then again, when you're relying...

There is a passage from Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations" that I think is better than the rest. It's the moment Estella, speaking to Pip, tells him she has "no heart". Her monologue in that moment says so much in my opinion, about her view of herself, what she believes she deserves and whom she always will be. That scene in David Lean's 1946 adaptation couldn't be better, in Mike Newell's latest adaptation it doesn't fall flat, but it doesn't stand out as much as I wished it would. The same could be said for the film itself, which is perfectly serviceable, but overall nothing that offers a shift to the landscape. Dickens' novel has been adapted for the screen a myriad of times, from silent films to modern adaptations and just as soon as it begins, it's quite clear why. Great Expectations, if told with a competent cast,...

Rarely has Dickens been such flat fare: the meat and humour are gone, replaced by gristle and a damp-pancake Miss Havisham
Great Expectations isn't just Charles Dickens's best book. It's also his soapiest. Of all the novels he wrote in instalments, it's this that most graphically caters to the cliffhanger, drips with deadline sweat and amps up the action at every chapter's close. So it takes a special type of talent to turn it into a film quite this flat.
Mike Newell (of Four Weddings fame) must take the lion's share of blame, but a chunk too should be saved for One Day's David Nicholls, who supplies a York Notes adaptation, a bowdlerised whistlestop tour round keynote scenes. He appears to have extracted not just much of the book's humour – early scenes with Mrs Joe (Sally Hawkins), Mr Joe (Jason Flemyng) and young Pip fall notably flat, despite David Walliams...

It’s hard to understand how things could’ve gone so wrong with this latest adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic cautionary tale of class mobility. For one thing, director Mike Newell is wise to have eschewed the genteel trappings of the many TV incarnations in favor of a grubby, even brutal naturalism more akin to Roman Polanski’s 2005 version of “Oliver Twist” or Andrea Arnold’s more radical take on Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights.” What’s more, Newell scores at least two casting coups by enlisting Helena Bonham Carter as Miss Havisham and Ralph Fiennes as Magwitch, two very different figures who have an equally decisive effect on the development of our young hero Pip, a blacksmith’s apprentice who is mysteriously given a chance to become a proper gentleman in 19th-century London. Yet a weak central performance by “War Horse”’s Jeremy Irvine and an inelegantly condensed screenplay by David.

I have to admit, sorting through the Toronto Film Festival line-up, I can't say Mike Newell's adaptation of Great Expectations stands out as a necessity. Sure, he's got Holliday Grainger, Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter and Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) in the starring roles and sure, this is classic material, but it doesn't feel in the least bit necessary. Just go watch David Lean's 1947 adaptation, which I personally think is quite great, and you're pretty much taken care of. It's not as if screenwriter David Nicholls' adaptation of the dreadful One Day is going to change my mind. The story, as always, is based on Charles Dickens' novel and centers on the orphan Pip (Irvine) who rises from humble beginnings thanks to a mysterious benefactor. Moving through London's class-ridden world as a gentleman, Pip uses his new status to pursue Estella (Grainger), a beautiful, heartless heiress he's always loved.

Tackling an adaptation of a 150-year-old Charles Dickens novel, especially one that has already been brought to the screen at least a dozen times in various forms, is a daunting task indeed. What do you change? What do you freshen up? Well, if you're Mike Newell, who directed a new adaptation, the answer to those last two questions (at least based on this new clip) is "very little." The brief clip of the BBC co-production, shows Jeremy Irvine as Pip and Ralph Fiennes as the mysterious Magwitch, in what appears to be their first meeting since encountering each other many years before and it is, more or less, exactly what you'd expect. The clip, courtesy of Empire, is moodily lit by frequent Ridley Scott collaborator John Mathieson and Fiennes seems to have set his line delivery to "extra British," but beyond that, it doesn't leave much of an impact. Literary adaptations pepper the big and small screen schedules year after year and the works of Charles Dickens have proved fertile ground.
Recently selected as the closing film of the London Film Festival Mike Newell’s version of Great Expectations has a fine cast and from the looks of this first clip has a sumptuous visual style.
Jeremy Irvine stars here as Pip opposite Ralph Fiennes’ Magwitch, meeting again for the first time in years. Their relationship is key to the maturation of Pip and this clip gives us a hint of Irvine’s take on the character.
Last week Great Expectations was named as the closing film for this year's BFI London Film Festival. This week, we have the first clip from Mike Newell's adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic, featuring Jeremy Irvine as Pip and Ralph Fiennes as Magwitch - so take a look and see what you think. brightcove.createExperiences();This scene, of course, takes place with Pip as a grown man, raised to respectability thanks to a mysterious benefactor. He re-encounters the escaped convict he helped as a boy - that would be Magwitch - and learns some uncomfortable truths about his life (don't worry: no major spoilers in this clip). The film also stars Helena Bonham-Carter as the manipulative Miss Havisham, David Walliams as Uncle Pumblechook, Robbie Coltrane as lawyer Mr Jaggers and Jason Flemyng as Pip's uncle Joe Gargery. David Nicholls wrote the script, and of course Mike Newell is directing.

Prepare your 'high hopes' jokes now, because Mike Newell's adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic novel Great Expectations is set to close the 56th London Film Festival this year. With Frankenweenie kicking off the festival, this means we now know what will be bookending this year's prestigious 12 day long celebration of the cinematic arts between October 10-21.With the screenplay written by David Nicholls (One Day, Starter For Ten) the film stars Helena Bonham Carter (Ms. Havisham), Ralph Fiennes (Magwitch), Robbie Coltrane (Mr. Jaggers), Uncle Pumblechook (David Walliams), Jason Flemyng (Joe Gargery) and War Horse's Jeremy Irvine as the young lead, Pip. Newell's team are clearly hoping to eclipse the already successful BBC adapation from earlier in the year.As you'll see from the stills above, there's a distinct difference in feel between Newell's take and David Lean's 1946 film, still regarded as the king of of Dickens...

The expectations are high for the latest screen adaptation of "Great Expectations" -- especially among "Harry Potter" fans. The newest version stars Helena Bonham Carter as the infamous Miss Havisham, Ralph Fiennes as Magwitch, Jessie Cave (Lavender Brown) as Biddy and Robbie Coltrane as Mr. Jaggers. If only Rupert Grint was starring as Pip ...
Alas, the onscreen "Potter" similarities end there: "War Horse" star Jeremy Irvine is Pip in this version of the Charles Dickens classic, which comes from "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" director Mike Newell. If you've read the classic -- or at least saw the updated take from fellow former "Potter" director Alfonso Cuaron -- you know the story: A young orphan falls in love with Miss Havisham's adopted daughter and later becomes a London gentleman after receiving a large sum from a mysterious benefactor. Entanglements that would make "Downton Abbey" fans gasp ensue, as...

Summer's over — it's time to add a little literature to your cinema.
Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations" is a story that's been adapted to film many times over, but luckily it's always a story worth telling. And this new adaptation by director Mike Newell looks to be one of the best ones yet.
Newell recruited many of the new friends he made on "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" to help him tell the classic tale of young Pip (Jeremy Irvine) and the sudden bit of good fortune given to him by a mysterious benefactor — and the various complications (romantic and otherwise) that come with and because of this unexpected gift.
Ralph Fiennes plays Magwitch and Robbie Coltrane plays Mr. Jaggers, which is brilliant casting on both counts — though not quite as brilliant as Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Havisham. Really, if there was ever a role Carter was born to play,...

We finally get our first look at Holliday Grainger, one of Screenterrier's favourite British rising stars, as Estella, alongside Jeremy Irvine as Pip.
The new film adaptation of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations, directed by Mike Newell, is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. It was over a year ago that Screenterrier reported on the casting of Holliday Grainger as Estella, the love interest and emotional torturer of the orphan Pip, who is played by young War Horse star Jeremy Irvine.
Holly (represented by Troika) stars as Lucrezia Borgia in Neil Jordan’s TV series The Borgias. She has also had recent roles in Cary Fukunaga’s Jane Eyre and in Bel Ami opposite Robert Pattinson.
Producer Elizabeth Karlsen of Number 9 Films commented "She is just an incredibly fine actor and has the beauty that is needed for Estella as well as an extraordinary technical ability.

BAFTA-winning Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) returns behind the camera this year to bring us his highly-anticipated adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations.
We got our first look at a terrifyingly convincing Helena Bonham Carter as Miss Havisham last year, followed by the first image of Jeremy Irvine as the young Pip, and now we’ve got a brilliant first look at Ralph Fiennes as Magwitch.
“An outstanding roster of British acting talent — including Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Sally Hawkins, Jason Flemyng, Ewen Bremner — bring Charles Dickens’ universe to life in this magnificent new screen version of the classic novel from director Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral).”
Newell is of course one of the most well-respected and long-standing British directors, and he’s directing here from a script by the best-selling novelist/screenwriter David Nicholls (Starter for 10, One Day).

This weekend, Gillian Anderson will try her hand at playing Miss Havisham, one of English literature’s greatest nutcases, in Masterpiece Classic’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. How does her portrayal differ from those before? Anderson’s Havisham is crazy and a fox. She’s also, very, very good. Part 1 (which airs tomorrow night, check local listings for the time) is so decidedly creepy with Havisham, all the fog and mud, and with Ray Winstone as Magwitch pulling a startled young Pip into the swamp. If there was ever someone you didn’t want to suddenly grab you,...

Chicago – Very few pieces of fiction have had the proven staying power of Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations,” which gets yet another adaptation in a two-week mini-series Masterpiece version, starting this Sunday, April 1st, 2012, on PBS. The mini-series has some flaws (mostly in the performance of its protagonist) but it proves again why this incredible tale has survived so many interpretations and is worth seeing for some striking production design choices, the strength of its incredible source material, and strong supporting performances, including a very memorable turn from Gillian Anderson.
TV Rating: 4.0/5.0
Do teenagers still read “Great Expectations” in high school? I hope so. It’s a fantastic book that has lost none of its thematic power. The story of a young orphan who has his life turned upside down by an encounter with an escaped convict and the interest of a wealthy widow looking for a friend for her lonely daughter has timeless lessons.

Prince Charles laid a wreath at the grave of Charles Dickens yesterday (07.02.12). The British royal led celebrations of the 200th anniversary of the Victorian novelist's birth, laying the flowers on the author's grave in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey where he was buried in 1870. Other members of the congregation included a number of Charles' relatives and descendants, where Mark Dickens - the great-great-grandson of the writer - gave a reading. Actor Ralph Fiennes who stars as Magwitch in a new film adaptation of 'Great Expectations', read also read an extract, from 'Bleak House'. Historian Judith Flanders attended the service and said while 'it was enormously moving,' Dickens would not have approved. She added: 'Dickens said in his will...
