The new year is continuing apace at Hulu. The streamer’s list of new releases for February 2022 is highlighted by one very interesting project.
Pam and Tommy is set to premiere on Feb. 2. Perhaps the Groundhog Day release date is intentional as the show will cover a particular moment of celebrity, sex, and exploitation from the early ’90s that seems to have repeated itself over and over. Sebastian Stan and Lily James star as Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson and the series follows the events and fallout of their homemade sex tape being stolen and unleashed on a nascent internet. If nothing else, getting the promo photos of Stan and James as the ’90s stars was worth it.

Stranger Things director Rebecca Thomas has landed another high-profile movie directing gig. A couple weeks ago it was announced that she would be developing a James Wan-produced sci-fi-thriller called Malignant.
THR is now reporting that she has been hired by Amblin Entertainment to direct another sci-fi film called Intelligent Life. The original script for the film was written by Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World, Star Wars: Episode IX) and Derek Connolly. Thomas will do some work on the script as well.
The story centers on a U.N. delegate tasked with being Earth's representative when humanity makes contact with alien life, and then he falls in love with a mysterious woman who turns out to be an alien.
This certainly sounds like the kind of film that Amblin would make. Trevorrow and producer Frank Marshall offered a joint statement, saying:

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amblin Entertainment has brought in Rebecca Thomas to direct the sci-fi film, Intelligent Life. The film follows a U.N. employee who makes contact with a beautiful woman, who may be an extraterrestrial. Thomas is also set to do some additional writing on the script that was originally written by Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World, Star Wars Episode 9) and Derek Connolly (Jurassic World, Kong: Skull Island). The original writers had this to say about Thomas.
"Rebecca beautifully captured the alienation we often feel amongst our fellow humans in her first feature. We can’t wait to see her explore those themes further in a story about our place in the universe.”

Throw a dart at a map, and you can make a World War II movie set in whatever place you hit. The long and winding saga of Intelligent Life, an Amblin Entertainment-produced sci-fi romance about the relationship between a United Nations employee and a woman who may or may not be from outer space, has taken another turn. According to Variety, director Jay Roach, best known for his Austin Powers and Fockers films, is now attached to the project. For now, he’s just signed on to polish the script a little, but producer Steven Spielberg supposedly wants Roach to just go ahead and direct the damned thing, too. Someone has to do it eventually. Way, way back in March 2015, an eon ago in pop culture time, it was announced that Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment would be producing the original screenplay by Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow, who wrote it with Derek Connolly (the upcoming Monster Trucks). At first, it looked like Ana DuVernay would be at the helm of...

Originally set with Ava DuVernay as director and Lupita Nyong’o to star, the feature could also wind up with Roach in the director’s chair after DuVernay departed to direct Disney’s adaptation of the Madeleine L’Engle classic book “A Wrinkle in Time.” That move put “Intelligent Life” on hold and also led to the exit of Nyong’o. “Intelligent Life” is based on an original screenplay by “Jurassic World” helmer Colin Trevorrow and his creative partner Derek Connolly.

Some good news to report regarding one our favorite filmmakers. Deadline is stating that Disney has set Ava DuVerney, director of Selma and Middle of Nowhere, to direct an adaptation of the 1963 Newbey Medal-winning book A Wrinkle In Time. Ever since Selma received a Best Picture nomination, DuVernay has been in-demand at various Hollywood studios, being considered for projects like Marvel's Black Panther among others. However, apparently she is eyeing two specific projects at Disney - one is this adaptation of the classic fantasy novel by Madeleine L'Engle, the other is a sci-fi screenplay by Colin Trevorrow & Derek Connolly titled Intelligent Life in the works at DreamWorks. Both films seem like a good fit for DuVernay. First published in 1962, L'Engle's A Wrinkle In Time is a beloved fantasy novel. Once courted for Marvel’s Black Panther film prior to Ryan Coogler being appointed at the helm, Selma director Ava DuVernay has sealed a deal to take point for a very different Disney project – A Wrinkle in Time.

Superstar director Ava DuVernay has officially signed on to direct the film adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s classic young-adult fantasy A Wrinkle in Time.
The script for the Disney film will be written by Frozen screenwriter Jennifer Lee.
DuVernay, who is the first African-American woman to win the Sundance Film Festival’s Best Director Prize (Middle of Nowhere) and the first African-American woman to be nominated for a Best Director Golden Globe Award (Selma), was reported as having been in talks for the role earlier this month. She is currently also in negotiations to helm Intelligent Life, a DreamWorks sci-fi film co-written by Jurassic World’s Colin Trevorrow and potentially starring Lupita Nyong’o.

Following the success of her 2014 film Selma, director Ava DuVernay certainly had a variety of options in front of her. A while ago, she was considered to direct Marvel's Black Panther, but she ultimately passed on the project. More recently, she's been considered to take on the Dreamworks thriller Intelligent Life and A Wrinkle In Time, an adaptation of the Madeleine D'Engle's classic children's book of the same name.
Now Deadline is reporting that the director has officially been hired by Disney to take on the adaptation A Wrinkle In Time, whose script was written by Frozen writer and co-director Jennifer Lee. This puts an end to the apparently six months of courtship by Disney, and, in my opinion, is a great step toward diversity in Hollywood. Very often, non-white filmmakers are considered to be great picks for race-related pictures, but aren't often even confronted for films that have nothing to do about race.

Ava DuVernay is not letting some big projects that have crossed her desk escape her attention. Earlier this month, it was reported that the "Selma" director was being wooed for two projects, an adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle's "A Wrinkle In Time," and the sci-fi thriller "Intelligent Life," penned by Colin Trevorrow and his "Jurassic World" collaborator Derek Connolly. She didn't waste a moment signing up to helm for the latter project, and before February is out, she's inking a deal for the former. A couple of weeks ago, word came out that Selma director Ava DuVernay was being courted to direct an adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's Newberry Medal-winning book A Wrinkle in Time. Now Deadline reports that DuVernay has signed a deal with Disney to direct a script from Frozen co-writer and director Jennifer Lee, though it's unclear exactly when the project will go before cameras.
A Wrinkle in Time is about a young girl (and her friends) who go on a search for her missing father, a government scientist who was working on a top secret project involving an inter-dimensional tesseract.
At the time of the initial report, DuVernay was also in the mix to direct Intelligent Life, a sci-fi thriller from Jurassic World and Safety Not Guaranteed co-writers Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly that now has Lupita Nyong'o lined up to star. That film centers on a U.N. delegate...

It looks like things have worked out for "Selma" director Ava DuVernay who, after some scheduling issues look to have been worked out, is set to tackle two film projects she's been linked to.
A few weeks back came word that DuVernay was up for two films - an adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle classic fantasy novel "A Wrinkle In Time," and the original Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly-scripted sci-fi thriller "Intelligent Life".
Lupita Nyong'o is to star in 'Life' which follows a Un worker in a department designed to represent mankind if there was ever contact with aliens, who falls for a mystery woman who turns out to be one. DuVernay received an offer for that film and began negotiations.
As a result it looked like she might have had to bow out of directing 'Time' for Disney Pictures. Not any more though, in fact she's gone beyond negotiations...

Jason from Mnpp here with today's best movie news -- with #OscarsSoWhite (side-note: I accidentally typed "OscarsSoShite" at first, ha!) dominating the movie conversation these past few weeks, and with all eyeballs slowly rightfully side-eyeing over to the studios themselves to see what they're gonna do about it, the number of projects that have been attached to Selma director Ava DuVernay has been a heartening development of the past few months, at least. She seems very much in demand. But she also seems very picky (thank goodness) - Marvel's Blank Panther movie? Notsomuch!
Anyway THR is reporting today that she's maybe going to direct a sci-fi movie called Intelligent Life, which Steven Spielberg's producing and Jurassic World helmer Colin Trevorrow wrote, and in further "That's a Bingo" news the movie is set to star Oscar winner and baby fashion icon Lupita Nyong'o. Yes I Want This All Of This.

Yesterday, we wrote about how Selma director Ava DuVernay was wanted for two upcoming projects: Disney's adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time, and Amblin's sci-fi film Intelligent Life. THR reports that DuVernay is still circling the project, but now Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong'o is in talks to star.
Intelligent Life is written by Jurassic World and Safety Not Guaranteed writers Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly, and is a reworking of a screenplay they wrote called The Ambassador. The plot centers on a U.N. delegate tasked with being Earth's representative when humanity makes contact with alien life, and then he falls in love with a mysterious woman who turns out to be an alien. Nyong'o is in talks for the alien role, which means she'll be playing two aliens in a row following her work as Maz Kanata in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. (Trevorrow, of course, is directing Episode IX,...

Well, that was fast. It was just yesterday with word that "Selma" director Ava DuVernay had a couple projects being floated her way, Disney's fantasy "A Wrinkle In Time," and Amblin's sci-fi 'Intelligent Life,' and less than 24 hours later, the wheels are starting to turn. THR reports that DuVernay is now circling "Intelligent Life," with "12 Years A Slave" Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o in negotiations to star. Penned by Colin Trevorrow and his "Jurassic World" collaborator Derek Connolly, it's actually a new version of "The Ambassador" that tells the story of a low-level worker at the United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs who accidentally makes first contact with a beautiful woman from another world, and risks his job and more when they are threatened from things at home and beyond. Nyong'o would be playing the alien. Production on the film begins this summer, but don't count...

Selma director Ava DuVernay reportedly tops producers’ wishlist for Colin Trevorrow-scripted tale of extraterrestrial first contact
Her role as a diminutive alien with mysterious powers was one of the more controversial aspects of space opera blockbuster Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Now Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o looks set to step into futuristic territory again, after entering talks to play a mysterious woman who turns out to be an extraterrestrial in the science-fiction thriller Intelligent Life.

After her studio break-out Selma proved to be one of 2014’s best films, Ava DuVernay has been courted for a number of projects, but has yet to decide on one yet. At the very least, we know that she’s thankfully dodging the Marvel machine, passing on Black Panther, which Creed‘s Ryan Coogler will direct, and today brings news of her most likely next project.
According to THR, she’s circling to direct the Steven Spielberg-produced sci-fi thriller Intelligent Life, which has Lupita Nyong’o in talks to direct. Scripted by Jurassic World duo Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly, the film follows a U.N. worker who heads up a department that will represent humankind upon the arrival of aliens. As DuVernay also considers an offer from Disney to direct A Wrinkle in Time, she could end up doing both, but with this one eying a summer start,...

Props to Ava DuVernay. After her powerful film Selma hit theaters and showed people the sad yet true events surrounding the famous Selma march, she's been thrust into every major studio's radar. At one moment she was even being considered to direct Black Panther for Marvel studios, but she decided to pass on that (probably) demanding project. But now, she's being courted yet again by the mouse, as Disney is reportedly courting DuVernay to direct a film adaption of the classic book A Wrinkle In Time.
But that's not all, as she is also being offered the chance to direct a Sci-Fi thriller titled Intelligent Life, which has had a script provided by both Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly. Get this, Intelligent Life is a story about a Un employee who works in a department that is meant to represent mankind in the event of extraterrestrial contact. The kicker: the...

As a lifelong, dedicated film fan, who is also a woman, two things immediately grab my attention: creative talents trying new things, and women having the space to tell stories. Needless to say, on the all-too-rare occasion that those two elements converge in the same project, I am all-in. Joy reigned throughout the land, then, when news arrived that not only is the formidably talented, Academy Award winning Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years A Slave, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) in talks to star in Intelligent Life, but that the incredible Ava DuVernay (Selma) is in talks to direct the film, too.
Intelligent Life began as a screenplay called The Ambassador, and is the work of powerhouse writing duo Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly. In its original form, this science fiction thriller focused on a Un worker within a unit tasked with representing humanity if aliens were to make contact. The...

The story follows a U.N. worker in a department that was created to represent humankind in the event of alien contact. He falls in love with a mysterious woman (Nyong'o) who turns out to be an alien.
"Jurassic World" duo Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly penned the script with Trevorrow and Frank Marshall producing. Filming aims to begin this Summer.

This past December, Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong'o got to take up the out of this world role of Maz Kanata, an enigmatic ally of the light side in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. While that role was a product of motion capture, Nyong'o injected so much soul and eccentricity into her performance that you could believe she was an ancient alien. Which is a good thing, considering she might be playing someone not of this Earth in Ava DuVernay's Intelligent Life. The newly talked about project boasts a who's who of talent, as the item from The Hollywood Reporter would have us believe. The script was penned by the Jurassic World team of Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly, as it was adapted from a script they'd previously completed entitled The Ambassador. Meanwhile, DuVernay's name has found itself attached as a possible directorial candidate, with A Wrinkle In Time...

Lupita Nyong'o and her extraterrestrial chops have been tapped for a role in a closer galaxy, as THR reports the Star Wars actress is in talks to take a turn as another alien. If negotiations go as planned, Nyong'o will star in the earthbound Intelligent Life, a sci-fi thriller coming from Amblin Entertainment. The trade notes Ava DuVernay might also receive an offer to direct. Jurassic World's Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly have already written the script, which tells the story of a U.N. worker-turned-interstellar ambassador who "falls in love with a mysterious woman, [Nyong'o], who turns out to be an alien." No word yet if this role also requires a fondness for Chewie or those tasty mocap dots, but you should know fairly soon, as production is slated to begin this summer.

Here we go. Right now, as we see conversations ranging from the essential to the ridiculous about diverse voices in film, there are a few key figures who are central to the discussion, and very few of them are being watched as closely as Ava DuVernay. I was flattened by her film Selma in 2014, and she's been a great steady clear voice in this ongoing debate about how best to knock down the conventional walls of who is or isn't "allowed" to tell Hollywood stories. One of the things that I've hoped as she's been circling projects is that whatever she chooses to direct next is something that broadens the definition of what a black woman can or can't do in our industry. Intelligent Life sounds like an excellent choice. To be fair, so does A Wrinkle In Time, a long-gestating adaptation of the Madeline L'Engele novel. That's set up at Disney and,...

Ava DuVernay broke out in a big way with Selma a couple of years ago, and now studios are tripping over themselves to work with her. Marvel Studios courted her to direct Black Panther, but she passed because she didn't think she'd be able to retain her artistic freedom as much as she would like in Kevin Feige's producer-driven system (Creed director Ryan Coogler eventually took on the Black Panther directing gig). And now two other studios are hoping to lure her in for upcoming movies.
Deadline reveals that DuVernay is being eyed to direct A Wrinkle in Time for Disney, which is a film adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's classic novel about a young girl (and her friends) who search for her missing father, a government scientist who was working on a top secret project involving an inter-dimensional tesseract. Frozen co-director Jennifer Lee wrote the screenplay.
