Psychological Horror Writ Large
jatherton-6023323 May 2024
I enjoyed this movie. The main character is a successful photographer who finds finds himself the target of a creepy, mysterious dark figure who taunts and torments him. The setting is good, we meet the character in his workspace, see his clients and employees. All seems good. But we see cracks in his perfect world -- a near-affair. The story becomes an exercise in building paranoia, reminiscent at times of "Rosemary's Baby" or "The Shining." It features solid performances from lead actors Joey Collins and Ena O'Rourke. Marcellus Shepard is also v. Good as the bestie the lead character pours his heart out to. But he continues to be pursued by this presence. "There is a Monster" is a psychological horror movie that unfolds at a decent pace and has a good twist at the end.

Pretty Good... for maiden indie effort!

So, guys... "There is a Monster." What can I say about this movie? I came across it on Amazon and didn't know what to expect. Paid the fee and watched. And... liked it a lot. It ain't a perfect movie by any means. But at least the filmmakers (Mike Taylor who wrote and directed; the DP; and the producers) tried to do a subtle horror film where the main villain is this dark force/presence. So no, you will not see axe murders or chainsaws here. But that's been done. I liked the performances by both lead actors. Writer/director Taylor does a good job building paranoia and fanning the flames of his concept. "There is a Monster" is psych horror on a budget, done indie style, a main character locked in a battle with something no one else sees, with a nice surprise ending I didn't expect.

Found the monster on the JC penny discount rack

I was completely blown away after witnessing a single man take on the role of not only writer but director of a masterpiece of flim.... that movie was Monkey Man. This movie generated within me a feeling that is the complete antithesis of the former.

BLACK SPANDEX REALLY?

I cannot even recommend this movie as fodder for lampooning, it takes itself far too seriously for comedic purposes.

I am very glad that the directors friends and family are so generous with their ratings. It's great to have a support system... But I will not be clamoring for future installments in Mike Taylor's directorial career.

Low budget to the extreme

Warning: Spoilers
I was very distracted at how low budget this creature feature is. Seriously, after the first 10 minutes, I was checking email as it played. The monster IS literally wearing spandex. OOF. I don't know how this stuff gets made and distributed. I'm always open to up and coming & indie filmmakers, but this is just bad-very, very, very bad. The acting is pitiful. Twist? Not so much. It's exactly what you think it is. I gave it a chance because it's the perfect length for a lil' horror movie, but, boy did I get fooled. I don't know what they were thinking , drinking or taking when making this movie, but I give 2 stars for the effort and 1 star because it's just not good. I'm sorry.
