Sex & Nudity

Violence & Gore

  • One character beats another and leaves them on the ground crawling. Some blood and a black eye (later) is visible.
  • Godzilla eats several people by grabbing them from the head (no blood but very violent).

Profanity

  • Since the movie is in subtitles screwed and hell can be read in the english caption.
  • Hell was used once and damn was used 3 times, spelled out in the subtitles.
  • Infrequent use of d*mn.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Men can be seen drinking sake and there are a few instances of smoking.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Godzilla is depicted as an extremely scary, vicious and menacing force of nature throughout the entire film, deliberately bringing absolutely misery and devastation towards the struggling Japanese wherever he shows up. Not helping matters is the intense sound design and the top-notch visual effects that only enhance his frightening presence.
  • Strong thematic material throughout; including content dealing with the atomic bombs, post-World War II Japan, suicide, and governmental dysfunction.
  • This film is by far the darkest and most depressing entry in the "Godzilla" franchise, being even darker than even the 1954 original. The devastation and the horrors of World War II as well as the very looming threat of Godzilla throughout the movie make it an incredibly intense and emotionally taxing experience from beginning to end, with a lot of very tense moments to be found and a story that deals with very serious and disturbingly realistic subject matter.
  • Godzilla's destruction scenes and the apocalyptic visuals of the attacks are very unsettling.
  • Godzilla's very abrupt entries early in the film may startle some.
  • The ending of the movie is extremely emotional.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • The opening attack on Odo Island is intense and violent. People are bitten and thrown into the air. Godzilla stomps on several victims, crushing others with his heavy tail. Some blood can be seen on the dead afterward.
  • Godzilla attacks Ginza halfway through the film. Buildings are toppled and many fleeing civilians are crushed. Pedestrians scream briefly before being stepped on by Godzilla, vanishing underfoot. Several reporters fall from a building as it toppled over. Godzilla lifts a train in his mouth, victims fall out of the destroyed carriage as others are killed in the fiery wreck.
  • Godzilla has regenerative powers in this film, resulting in scenes where Godzilla is injured with gory detail, only to have the flesh and muscle regenerate. Scarred tissue from various attacks gives Godzilla an even fiercer appearance as the film goes on.
  • A plane with bombs flies into Godzilla's mouth causing the top of his head to get blown off and then the rest of his body crumbles apart.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • There is a very intense attack on Ginza by Godzilla at the film's mid-point, resulting in the leveling of the city and thousands dead. Civilians, including children, are depicted with realistic panic. Some are crushed underfoot as Godzilla rampages. Massive destruction and terror.
  • Godzilla's atomic fire breath in this film is depicted as having the effect of an atomic bomb. Images recalling the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki underscore the horror of this destructive force.
  • The opening includes a vicious nighttime attack on technicians by Godzilla. Victims are crushed, bitten, and tossed into the air. Many are killed.
  • The main character suffers from intense survivor guilt and nightmares. He describes bad dreams in which he sees the ghosts of men whose deaths he witnessed calling him to join them. His fear is so acute that he wonders if he really did survive.
  • In one dark scene, Godzilla rampages through the city with devastating effects. He is shown crushing crowds and toppling building, and it is extremely devastating. Then, he causes the death of the protagonist's roommate. When he realizes what has happened, he just kneels on the ground and screams a piercing cry. Very difficult to watch.
