From Disney darling to Academy Award winner, Brie Larson has carved a unique path in Hollywood. At just 30 years old, she has already acted in various movies, from small independent ones to big blockbusters. She even tried her hand at directing, with projects such as The Arm (2012), Weighting (2013), Unicorn Store (2017), The Dew Project (2021).
Her latest movie is The Marvels, in which she played Captain Marvel again. However, it didn’t perform well, partly due to criticism from fans who disliked the story or the villain. Negative reviews further compounded the issue, and there were problems with promoting the movie because of actor strikes.

Samuel L. Jackson stood up for his Marvel co-star Brie Larson during a recent interview with Rolling Stone in which the Nick Fury actor was asked about Larson being the target of toxic Marvel fans on social media. The two actors headlined 2019’s “Captain Marvel,” which was review bombed by trolls for featuring Larson’s female superhero in a leading role. Jackson called Larson a “stronger person than people give her credit for.”
Jackson and Larson first met during the making of “Kong: Skull Island,” and then she cast him in a supporting role in her feature directorial debut “Unicorn Store.” Their bond led her to consult with him when Marvel Studios and Disney offered her the role of Captain Marvel.
“We bonded through the election while we were doing her movie when Donald Trump won,” Jackson remembered. “She was broken and I was like, ‘Don’t let ‘em break you.

Samuel L. Jackson is addressing the backlash to longtime co-star Brie Larson as Captain Marvel in the MCU.
The “Secret Invasion” actor told Rolling Stone that Oscar winner Larson is an unapologetically “feminist,” which is just something Marvel fans and “incel dudes” alike will have to live with.
“Brie’s a stronger person than people give her credit for,” Jackson said of his “Marvels” co-star. “She’s not going to let any of that stuff destroy her. These incel dudes who hate strong women, or the fact that she’s a feminist who has an opinion and expressed it? Everybody wants people to be who they want them to be. She is who she is, and she’s genuinely that.”
Jackson reflected on how he and Larson first became friends while working on the 2017 King Kong iteration “Kong: Skull Island.”

Brie Larson may have been the first female superhero to lead a Marvel film, but that doesn’t mean she dove into the idea headfirst.
In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, the Captain Marvel star revealed that the idea of playing the superhero frightened her originally because of the potential effects of the global superstardom that could come with it.
“I was scared of what would happen to me,” she told the publication, sharing that she was worried that taking on a major role in a billion-dollar franchise would cost her the ability to be a normal person in the world and prevent her from doing the things she loves.
Larson explained that the choice she had about whether or not to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe felt surreal to her. “I was like, ‘What world is this, where these are the choices I have to make as an artist?...

Exclusive: Hercules Film Fund and Rhea Films have closed a deal to finance and produce a feature-length version of Power Signal — the sci-fi short from Oscar Boyson that had its world premiere in Sundance’s Midnight Shorts section last Friday.
The short stars Babs Olusanmokun (Dune) as a NYC delivery worker who has a close encounter with an otherworldly life form after accepting a degenerate customer’s bizarre proposition. Boyson directed the pic, also starring Angela Sarafyan, Tennessee King and Will Brill, from his and Erin DeWitt’s script, also producing with Jordan Drake, Alex Coco, and production companies Object & Animal and Hayden 5.
Like the short, the feature adaptation is described as a NYC-set sci-fi Western in which e-biking delivery workers are the cowboys. Further plot details are under wraps.
Boyson will direct from his script written with DeWitt and Ricky Camilleri. The project reunites him with producers Paris Kassidokostas-Latsis...

If you think the price of early-access premium VOD movies from major studios is steep, this will make your eyes roll.
For the launch of “18 & Over,” an indie horror film starring, produced by and co-created by Ashley Benson (“Pretty Little Liars”), the producers are granting an exclusive two-month streaming window to fans who buy one of 10,000 limited-edition NFTs with character art based on the movie.
The price of entry? The NFTs will go on sale for 263 each on Aug 5 — which, if they all sell out, would work out to a 2.63 million total haul. Then, starting Aug. 12, each Nft owner will be able to watch the “collector’s cut” of the film for a two-month period via a private link.
To be fair, producers Hercules Film Fund and Rhea Films say that “long-term holders” of the NFTs will receive perks in addition to early-access streaming, including exclusive access to...

One of Brie Larson’s best movies is trending on Netflix today. According to rankings shared by FlixPatrol, 2015’s Room – not to be confused with Tommy Wiseau’s immortal The Room – is the tenth most-watched film on the streaming giant. It’s not being binged quite as much as more easygoing fare like The Grinch (#9), Mr. Peabody and Sherman (#6) or We Can Be Heroes (#1), but still, a lot of folks are obviously appreciating the emotional drama based on the bestselling novel by Emma Donoghue and directed by Lenny Abrahamson.
Room stars Larson as Joy Newsome, a woman who was abducted seven years ago and lives in a squalid shed with her five-year-old son Jack (Jason Tremblay), who was born in captivity. The film follows Joy’s attempts to keep her boy safe from their captor, Old Nick (Sean Bridger), and shield him from the truth. You see, Jack grows up...

Like many untested and unproven aspiring actresses, Brie Larson suffered her fair share of rejection in the early days of her career after auditioning for some of the biggest franchises in Hollywood like The Hunger Games and Terminator. She was also knocked back for several smaller Marvel Cinematic Universe roles before eventually being cast as Captain Marvel, and even then she was reluctant to accept the studio’s offer.
Of course, Larson is now one of the most sought-after young talents in the business having headlined a superhero blockbuster that earned over a billion dollars at the box office and boasting a trophy cabinet that includes an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and an Emmy, which isn’t a bad haul for someone that only turned 31 last month. The Kong: Skull Island star even moved into directing recently, helming 2017’s warmly-received comic drama Unicorn Store for Netflix.

It’s a good thing Brie Larson is at peace with her earlier heartbreaks. In a video she posted on Thursday, the “Captain Marvel” star rattled off all the movies she auditioned for and didn’t get — and it’s quite the list.
Larson broke her list down into movies she auditioned for and then missed out on, as well as movies she made it to the final round for and still didn’t get. And all of these were just from between 2008 and 2009.
“It’s a lot of heartbreak, folks. Here I am, still standing,” she said after running down her list.
Hearing Brie Larson rattle them off rapid-fire is delightful and hilarious, but in case you can’t watch, here’s the full list, including some blockbusters, Oscar-winners, some real stinkers and even a pair of Marvel movies!

Brie Larson may have accomplished more by the time she turned 30 than a lot of other aspiring talents manage to achieve in their entire careers, but it wasn’t as if the success simply fell into her lap. The hardest part of making it in Hollywood is getting your foot in the door in the first place, and once Larson finally caught her big break there was no looking back.
As well as winning an Academy Award for Best Actress at the age of just 26 following a string of acclaimed supporting roles, the Short Term 12 star also made her feature-length directorial debut with Netflix’s Unicorn Store and of course, joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Captain Marvel, headlining a billion-dollar box office hit and establishing herself as one of the key components of the franchise’s future.

Jurassic World: Dominion is the title of the 2021-scheduled third film in the revived blockbuster Jurassic Park franchise, intended as the conclusion to a trilogy consisting of 2015’s Jurassic World and 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. The sequel swan song will showcase a shaken status quo after Fallen Kingdom‘s plot twist, in which the cloned dinosaurs were unleashed upon civilization, altering the existential balance of mankind (and the rest of the animal kingdom).
Seemingly mirroring Disney’s revived Star Wars Sequel Trilogy films, the Jurassic Sequel Trilogy will close things out with the director who helped foster the relaunch, Colin Trevorrow. He will work off a script that he helped develop with Derek Connolly, co-written by Emily Carmichael.

Brie Larson made a huge impact when she debuted as Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel last spring. Following that and her scene-stealing cameos in Avengers: Endgame, she’s now a major force in the McU. But could the actress move over into a directing role as well going forward? It’s certainly a possibility. At least, according to a new rumor about Captain Marvel 2.
Cosmic Book News notes that an anonymous source has tipped them off that Marvel is considering having Larson co-direct the sequel. She could then step up as solo director on Captain Marvel 3. Even Cbn says to take this with a pinch of salt though, so clearly we shouldn’t put too much stock into this rumor at present. It’s certainly fun to think about, though.

For a while there, Nick Fury seemed to have quietly disappeared from the McU, with no appearances from 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron until 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War. However, the one-eyed super-spy is definitely back to being a regular player now after turning up in all three McU movies released in 2019. Thankfully, his prominent role in the franchise looks set to remain as well, as we’re hearing that Fury will show up in Captain Marvel 2, among other films.

The Handmaid's Tale has returned at full throttle with an engrossing third season premiere, this time giving us a closer look at one creepy and enigmatic Commander Lawrence, played by Bradley Whitford. It's hard to get a read on the guy's intentions. He helps Emily escape after she attacked Aunt Lydia and seems to care about his wife (even if he was the one to put her in this twisted world). But he's also an architect of Gilead and plays a cat and mouse game with June. At this point, he feels more like a threat than an ally. While we don't know much about Lawrence, we do know a thing or two about Whitford, who has sneakily made his ascent into his silver fox era.

Oscar winning-actress Brie Larson donned the director's hat for her new project Unicorn Store. She says her new directing duties have made her a better actor. Larson, who has become the first to lead a female superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Captain Marvel, feels that having the knowledge of directing films has improved her as an actor. "Directing makes me a much better actor because you see the entire process. Actors don't get to be part of pre-production as much...they are not seeing what everybody does on the team," Larson told media during the promotion of her forthcoming film Avengers: Endgame here on Monday.
"Sometimes everybody gets caught up in their roles specifically. They don't see the bigger picture...how they fit in this larger scope. And with films like these in particular where it's beyond what's happening on set, there are people all over the world working on CGI,...

Updated with video. Brie Larson, fresh off her star turn in Captain Marvel, said her decision to direct the feature film Unicorn Store on Netflix was rooted in a desire to use the industry capital conferred by her Oscar win and rising fortunes as an actor.
“We have to break these boundaries,” she said during an appearance at Tina Brown’s Women in the World conference in New York. “Whatever that currency is, I’m spending it. I’m not going to save it in an account. We need the change now.” While directing was completely new to her, she added, “I’m not afraid of falling on my face because I’ve done this my whole life. It’s like, ‘That’s done. Next.'”

Brie Larson is undoubtedly one of the biggest actresses in the industry right now. Back at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2017, she debuted her directorial debut in Unicorn Store, a quirky tale that mixed comedy and drama in equal measure. Since then, the movie has been in limbo, ultimately getting picked up by Netflix in a larger overall deal with Larson. Over the weekend, the flick hit the streaming service, offering the masses another opportunity to see Larson in new material, hot on the heels of the uber success of Captain Marvel. Though nothing to rave about, this debut is a confident and charming one, proving that there’s little Larson can’t do. The film is a dramedy about a potential influx of happiness into a woman’s life. Kit (Larson) has a strong artistic streak, but it’s not one easily understood. When art school doesn’t work out,...

With Captain Marvel crossing the $300million mark at the box office, Netflix has capitalized on Brie Larson's booming popularity to acquire her 2017 directorial debut. Unicorn Store is a coming-of-age comedy that happens to also star buddy and co-Avenger Samuel L. Jackson. And while Larson fans will enjoy watching the actress glitter (sometimes literally) across the screen for an untidy 92 minutes, ultimately the star's freshman effort comes off as more style than subsance.
Written by Samantha McIntyre (Married), Unicorn Store tells the self-consciously magical story of a twenty-something failed artist named Kit (Larson), who gets a second chance when she's offered the chance to fulfill her childhood dream...of owning a unicorn. After she fulfills some obligations, of course. The premise is purposely absurd, and for the most part, Larson adeptly navigates between the more magically bizarre scenes of straw-dying and stable-building, and the more quotidian (and...

The Netflix millennial coming-of-age dramedy sets Brie Larson as a storyteller to watch both in front of and behind the camera.
Brie Larson's directorial debut, Unicorn Store, is a coming-of-age film for a generation that is "coming of age" later and for longer than generations before. It is a sympathetic exploration of the "Peter Pan Syndrome" firmly placed in the millennial experience, and without the judgmental undertones (and sometimes overtones) of films with a similar subject matter but far less empathy for the contemporary young adult experience.
While The Verge calls Unicorn Store "an odd companion piece to Captain Marvel," in part because of the Brie Larson/Samuel L. Jackson reunion, the Netflix film pairs much better with 2012's indie Safety Not Guaranteed or 2004's 13 Going On 30, aka coming-of-age dramedies with a magical surrealist bend. If you're looking to make an event of it, Unicorn Store also pairs well with Pop Tarts,...

Netflix came to the defense of Brie Larson after a Twitter user accused the “Captain Marvel” actress of not being qualified enough to be a director. The streaming giant is releasing Larson’s feature directorial debut, “Unicorn Store,” next month. The drama premiered at Tiff 2017 and stars Larson opposite Samuel L. Jackson, Bradley Whitford, and Mamoudou Athie.
After Netflix premiered the “Unicorn Store” trailer online last week, Twitter user @TheJoeGil reacted to the film in a since-deleted post that questioned Larson’s status as a director. The social media user said Larson was “just riding ‘Captain Marvel’s’ wave” to land directing gigs and had not put in the time and energy like fellow actor Jonah Hill, who was “mentored by Martin Scorsese and took years before he made his directorial debut out of respect for the artistry of film and the position of director.”

Fresh from smashing records with her Marvel debut in Captain Marvel, Brie Larson is hitting another benchmark in her career - the actress is making her directorial debut with the Netflix film Unicorn Store, and she's bringing her Captain Marvel costar Samuel L. Jackson with her.
Unicorn Store follows a young woman named Kit after she's been kicked out of art school and forced to move back in with her parents. Despite her creative, escapist ways, Kit resolves to "grow up" and takes a temp job for a PR firm. Everything changes when she meets the mysterious salesman of "The Store" (Jackson), who promises her childhood's greatest desire and leads her down a path to discovering what true magic really means.
From the looks of the trailer - and the flashy suits we really need a closer look at - it's safe to say Unicorn Store is going to be one vibrant adventure.

Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival back in 2017, Netflix has smartly waited to release Brie Larson’s directorial debut Unicorn Store in a post-Captain Marvel world. Larson plays Kit, flunked out of art school student and now forced into the mundane reality of temp work that lacks the color and spark of her former world. She is presented with an opportunity by The Salesman, who can sell her a unicorn, a lifelong dream of hers since childhood. With an added helping of sparkles and rainbows, Netflix has now released the first trailer. Jake Howell said in his Tiff review, “Like student-written high school theatre, with its lack of coordination and characters that never transcend caricature, there’s an earnestness to Unicorn Store that passes as inoffensive naiveté.”
