The one and only Pam Grier will be honored by Cinema St. Louis with a ‘Women in Film Award’ when she’s in town for this year’s St. Louis International Film Festival. Pam’s iconic movie career began when she moved to Los Angeles in the late ‘60s from her native North Carolina at age 18. After a tiny role in Russ Meyer’s Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls (1970), she landed a job as a receptionist for American International Pictures where she was discovered by Jack Hill, an Aip director who cast her in a pair of women’s prison films: The Big Doll House (1971) and The Big Bird Cage (1972). Soon she was known as the “Queen of Blaxploitation” at a time when film roles for African-American women were, as Grier puts it, “practically invisible, or painfully stereotypical”.

Oh, the ’70s, back when a jive turkey was the last thing you wanted to be but being called a brick house was a compliment.
If there’s one woman who knows all about the colorful era, it’s Pam Grier, the former screen siren known for playing strong, sexy, street-smart protagonists in popular black films like Foxy Brown, Coffy and Sheba Baby.
“It was a movement,” Grier, 67, now says of the films in her heyday. “Characters like Foxy and Coffy showed how a woman could be a lady and still be able to defend herself. We were trying to be expressive and progressive.

Olive has given us a ready-made Blaxploitation marathon, all in glorious HD. The boutique label has been killing it lately, releasing a ton of coveted titles to the Blu-ray format. This time around, they release the exploitation classics Coffy, Foxy Brown, Friday Foster, and Hammer.
The Movies:
Of the four films being released, Foxy Brown is easily my favorite. It’s the classic revenge tale, with a Blaxpoitation twist, starring Pam Grier, and written and directed by Jack Hill. In Foxy Brown, Grier’s boyfriend is murdered by a government agency, so she poses as a sexy afro-sporting prostitute to carve her way up the ladder in order to get her ultimate revenge. This was the first movie that exposed me(in more ways than one) to Pam Grier, and it’s pretty clear that it was one of Tarantino’s favorites as well.

Coffy/Foxy Brown/Friday Foster
Coffy and Foxy Brown written and directed by Jack Hill
Friday Foster written by Orville H. Hampton, directed by Arthur Marks
USA, 1973/1974/1975
Olive Films recently released several Blaxploitation titles on Blu-ray for the first time, all on the same day. This included the Fred Williamson-starring Hammer, from 1972, as well as three Pam Grier films: Coffy (1973), Foxy Brown (1974), and Friday Foster (1975). Hammer isn’t a particular favorite, but these latter three were most welcome, especially Coffy, which is quite possibly the greatest of all Blaxploitation features, even better than the more popular Shaft (1971) and Super Fly (1972). As much as anything, these three releases are notable for showcasing Grier at her finest during a period of immensely enjoyable work and exceptional productivity—15 films from her minor debut in Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970) to Friday Foster. Around these films, she also starred in several other...

Pam Grier needs no introduction – but you're going to get one anyway. With roles in Coffy and Foxy Brown in the 1970s, Grier created and then defined the archetypal blaxploitation heroine: Sexy, self-assured and independent.
Grier was the first African-American woman on the cover of Gloria Steinem's Ms., making her an early feminist icon; she still refers to Steinem as her mentor.
The movie Foxy Brown turns 40 on April 5. We spoke to Grier about the film's legacy, Grier's extensive charity work ... and knitting. (Yes, you read that correctly.) At 64, she remains feisty, eloquent and as always, a whole lotta woman.

Cinema Retro has received the following announcement:
The Redford Theatre is pleased to invite you to a very special weekend event: The Pam Grier Film Festival. Not only will we be presenting three riveting films starring the queen of high-octane action thrillers, but the actress herself will be making a live appearance on our stage at each of our shows. "Coffey" will be the feature on Friday, February 21, at 8:00pm. "Foxy Brown" will be shown onSaturday, February 22, at 2:00pm. The Quentin Tarantino classic, "Jackie Brown" will round out the Festival on Saturday at 8:00pm.
The first two, "Coffy" and "Foxy Brown", remain prime examples of the blaxploitation genre of the '70's and are unique in that they star a tough, sexy, street-smart woman rather than the typical tough guy male. "Coffy" was Grier's first starring role, and she quickly caught the attention of Hollywood and her...

They are on a trail of homegrown domestic terrorists who have set about to bring anarchy to the heartland of the United States and have to stop them before it is too late. Richburg and Grier recently collaborated on the adaptation of Grier’s memoir Foxy: My Life In Three Acts, which Richburg wrote. Grier is repped by TalentWorks; Richburg is repped by attorney Hillary Jones, who will also serve as a producer on the show. eOne’s Michael Rosenberg and Harrison Reishman oversee the project for the studio.

★★★★☆ One of the breakout hits from the controversial blaxploitation era, Jack Hill's Foxy Brown (1974) (alongside Coffy from the previous year) helped solidify the then 25-year-old Pam Grier's reputation as the queen of that since mythologised sub-genre. Producing a new transfer which retains that grainy, tangible feel of the original film stock, cult specialists Arrow Video brings yet another trash classic to the small screen, which acts as a perfect primer for newcomers to this series of films, and also offers a treat for long-time fans eager for their beloved heroine to receive the HD treatment. It's certainly been worth the wait.

The interview itself is certainly worth listening to, so you don't have to skip ahead to the key few minutes when she talks about what projects she's currently attached to star in. It's part of the Film Society of Lincoln Center's film series, Foxy, The Complete Pam Grier, a retrospective of all her films, which took place 2 weekends ago here in NYC. Grier herself was present for several of the screenings, after which she sat with a moderator for a Q&A session. I encourage you to watch them all. It was also over the weekend (March 15-17) that the Film Society of Lincoln Center (NYC) ran its film series, Foxy, The Complete Pam Grier, a retrospective of all her films, several of them highlighted by the attendance of Grier herself, ending on Sunday with a live conversation with Ms Grier, during which she took the stage to discuss her storied career, illustrated by clips from some of her most audacious and unforgettable performances. I wasn't able to attend that conversation (although I was present for earlier functions), but the folks at Flavorwire were there, and they...

Never Fear, Pam Grier Is Here! Pam Grier started her career in a number of women-in-prison films which lead to a fruitful stint of starring roles in Blaxploitation cinema. Grier created an intelligent, sensual, and tough on-screen persona with her starring roles, the likes to which few actresses are comparable. She has since gone from Blaxploitation to a forty-year career spanning film and television. She has worked with such great filmmakers as John Carpenter, Tim Burton, Jack Hill, and Quentin Tarantino – whose own film Jackie Brown is a love letter to both Grier and Blaxploitation cinema. Here is a look at the top five films of Grier’s early seventies work:
# 5 Black Mama, White Mama 1973
Written by H.R. Christian, Joe Viola, and Jonathan Demme
Directed by Eddie Romero
“A terrorist and a hooker…you two should have a lot to talk about.”
This is a women-in-prison film (Wip) aimed at a racially diverse audience.
