Shield Slinger
This is another of my favorite video games of all time, it's also another childhood relic as this game is one of the first video games I've ever played.
Not a whole lot I can say about the game, the game is sort of like a run and gun game with a little platform action mixed in only here it takes place in the fantasy world from a time long ago which I think is cool as I don't see many run and gun games based in the fantasy genre, as most are from the action and sci-fi genre. And your armed with a Shield which acts as a giant yo yo.
Action is solid, here you simply go from point A to B but constantly fight while on the move, and in this game you really can't afford to stop or it will cost you your life. Really like the Shield weapon as that's a weapon I don't see used as a weapon in video games much. This game makes it cool much like Captain America's Shield you can just about sling the shield any direction you want, and it will always come back to you.
Though as you go along, there are plenty of items to pick up which can give you a boost in your gameplay as well as empty boxes on the bottom right which are there for the items you collect to occupy and upgrade you character's abilities. From an item that can make the shield recoil faster, the distance a little longer, and one which is a little harder to find where you have a force field that surrounds you giving you temporary invincibility. You can even jump on the heads of enemies to bounce off them, just to give you an opportunity to get past them, though this doesn't work on all enemies.
The difficulty in the game is one that gradually builds up as you advance which is common in all the arcade games. At first, it's slightly easy but then it starts to get a little harder and tricky. Mainly it was the odds in the game just constantly stacking up at a ridiculous rate which makes the difficulty of the game a little cheap but nothing I can't handle as it comes with the territory of most arcade games.
The graphical presentation is solid, it's the kind of advanced graphics you would see from 80's arcade games which is fine with me. Really like the territory you run though each of them are different and really have just this open outdoors aspect to them. It does a good job at creating the illusion of speed as you go on you really feeling like you are passing though the territories and going toward a destination.
I like the vast variety of enemies, yeah some of the same ones will always come at you again and again that goes with the territory of arcade games. However, whenever you clear a section there will always be a new kind of enemy in the mix which keeps the game fresh and you constantly alert.
Really like the designs on the monsters as their strange and colorful. One is sort of this triceratops dog creature that has red eyes. Another is these blood colored giant potato bugs that constantly come up from the ground and try to run you down. Then there are these humanoids that have head of a scarab and many of their buddies can stack up and pounce on you. Blue headless mannequin like henchmen. And plenty of other all kinds of strange inhuman bad.
Music is good, if not on my list of favorite tracks as it's sort of a repetitive beat throughout the game. But it's an enjoyable beat as its slightly motivational almost like an aerobics tune, with that constant rhythm and almost drum like beat constantly going on.
"Rygar" is a classic that goes the distance.
Rating: 3 and a half stars
