While we wait for MaXXXine, the final film in director Ti West’s trilogy that kicked off with X and continued with Pearl, we’ve learned that X is headed to Netflix next month.
See where the story of Maxine and Pearl began when X hits Netflix on February 1.
From A24 and director Ti West, 2022’s X stars Mia Goth (A Cure for Wellness, Suspiria, Emma), Brittany Snow (Prom Night, Pitch Perfect, Pitch Perfect 2), Jenna Ortega (“You,” 2022’s Scream, The Babysitter: Killer Queen), and Grammy Award® nominee Scott Mescudi (better known as Kid Cudi, Don’t Look Up).
In the 1979-set movie, “A group of actors set out to make an adult film in rural Texas under the noses of their reclusive hosts — an elderly couple with a farm and boarding house for rent. But when the couple catches their young guests in the act, the cast finds themselves in...

Faith is a powerful thing. There’s almost no limit to what can be accomplished when enough people share the same beliefs. However, this power can be easily misused, and a group of misguided believers can do a lot of damage during their search for enlightenment. That’s why it’s no surprise that there are so many scary movies about the dangers of cults.
From Rosemary’s Baby to Midsommar, filmmakers have been using these volatile groups to tell some incredibly chilling stories since the beginning of cinema, and that’s precisely why we’ve decided to compile a list highlighting six of the scariest cults in horror.
For the purposes of this list, we’ll be defining a “cult” as a fringe group of extreme believers bound by a shared (fictional) faith. And while we won’t be officially including it on the list due to a possible conflict of interests,...

Ah, the 2010s! A decade where we were introduced to the “dab,” fidget spinners, and the horror of reading a text marked as “seen” with no reply. Okay, that last one still happens. But amidst the cultural phenomena, the world of horror cinema was cooking up some spine-tingling gems that many might’ve missed. For the brave souls who dare to venture beyond the mainstream, here’s a list of ten underrated horror movies from the 2010s that deserve more than just a passing glance.
FilmBuff 10. The Battery (2012)
Imagine a world overrun by zombies, but instead of the usual chaos, we get a bromance between two former baseball players. The Battery is less about the undead and more about the living, focusing on the dynamics between its two protagonists. It’s a refreshing curveball in the zombie genre, proving that there’s more to life (and death) than just survival.

Scott Haze of Venom and Jurassic World: Dominion and Kate Lyn Sheil of The Sacrament and She Dies Tomorrow star in the upcoming horror thriller The Seeding, which will be having its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival next month.
The feature directorial debut of writer/director Barnaby Clay, The Seeding has the following synopsis: When a hiker gets lost in the desert, a gang of feral children propelled by haunting legacies traps him in a sadistic battle for survival with a frightening endgame.
The Tribeca write-up offers some more information: We can probably agree that growing up is hell, but growing up alone in the desert is another kind of hell altogether. That’s what one hiker (Scott Haze) finds out when he encounters a lost child while photographing a solar eclipse. What starts as an act of good Samaritanism turns into a deadly cat-and-mouse game between him,...

It’s time for a new episode of the Wtf Really Happened to This Horror Movie? video series, and in this one we’re looking at the tragic true events that inspired the 2003 shark thriller Open Water (watch it Here). To find out all about it, check out the video embedded above.
Wtf Really Happened to This Horror Movie? is sort of a spin-off from our show Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie. Wtf Really Happened to This Horror Movie? dives into movies that were based on or “inspired by” true stories, real people, and actual historical events so we can try to separate fact from fiction.
Written and directed by Chris Kentis, Open Water has the following synopsis: Daniel and Susan embark on a tropical vacation with their scuba-diving certifications in tow. During a group dive, the two separate themselves from the others to dive a little deeper. An...

Ti West has been churning out grisly indie horror films for almost two decades, starting with “The Roost” before his breakout satanic panic thriller “The House of the Devil” in 2009. But his recent collaboration with A24 on porn-set slasher “X,” campy gothic follow-up “Pearl,” and trilogy-ender “MaXXXine” has spawned an entirely singular Ti West Cinematic Universe: a cause for celebration in a Hollywood, where such franchises too often seem to cannibalize each other with spinning-out-of-control mythologies and winking and self-referential fan-baiting.
So it’s interesting that, for the director of movies like “Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever” and the Jonestown-inspired mockumentary “The Sacrament,” the great films of horror history annals largely don’t strike him as the best the medium has to offer. At least, that’s according to his ballot for BFI’s 2022 Sight & Sound filmmakers poll of the greatest movies of all time. There’s no “Texas Chain Saw Massacre” or “Halloween” here,...

Last year, Ti West was granted admission to an exclusive club whose members include Alfred Hitchcock, Ingmar Bergman, and Spike Lee. Like them, West can now say he has released two films in a single year. His Seventies-set slasher X and its lurid prequel Pearl were shot back-to-back and released within six months of one other in the US. The latter is now finally hitting UK cinemas, which has put West on an unusually long conveyor belt of press, giving interviews for a film he believed to be done and dusted months ago – not ideal for a director who prefers writing in short bursts. “I find writing to be unpleasant, so the faster I can get it done, the better,” winces West over Zoom from Los Angeles. Pearl was written during a two-week hotel quarantine in New Zealand.
If the film was made in a rush, it doesn’t show.

A new episode of the Wtf Really Happened to This Horror Movie? video series has just been released, and in this one we’re looking into the real world crimes that inspired director Brian Yuzna’s 1996 horror film The Dentist (watch it Here). To find out all about it, check out the video embedded above.
Scripted by Stuart Gordon, Dennis Paoli, and Charles Finch, The Dentist has the following synopsis: Dr. Alan Feinstone is a rich and successful Beverly Hills dentist. There’s only one problem, he’s insane. Dr. Feistone loves perfection, and he expects it of everyone. Unfortunately, no one is perfect. This unacceptable fact annoys the good doctor and leads him to commit his one small imperfection: murder.
The film stars Corbin Bernsen, Linda Hoffman, Michael Stadvec, Ken Foree, Tony Noakes, Molly Hagan, Patty Toy, Jan Hoag, Virginya Keehne, Earl Boen, Christa Sauls, Mark Ruffalo, Lise Simms,...

Welcome back, dear readers! It’s a new year, and it’s time for more new (to me) horror flicks. We’re kicking 2023 off with a flick from Ti West, a dude who had a hell of a 2022 with not one but two hit films in X and Pearl. But today we’re going to be taking a trip back into his earlier filmography, and our companion will be the great Emily von Seele. In addition to being a Senior Contributor right here at Daily Dead, you probably also know Emily as a regular co-host on the Dead Ringers podcast (I’m in the process of collecting all the Dead Ringers hosts as I’ve previously chatted with Nolan McBride and Philip Yount). Emily’s knowledge about horror films knows no bounds, and she brings an infectious enthusiasm to her discussion about the genre.

Vice’s “The 3:07 Am Project” gave four emerging horror filmmakers a chance to play around in ‘The Conjuring’ universe with minute-long morsels of murder.
The Conjuring has proven itself to be a worthy cinematic universe, delivering two proper sequels and a slew of spin-offs, with more creepy content on the way to further expand the multi-billion dollar horror franchise. The reception towards Ed and Lorraine Warren’s cinematic antics has somewhat cooled down in recent years and left audiences wondering if what’s currently on slate for The Conjuring universe will be its last hurrah or if “The Nun 3” or “Crooked Man Vs. Annabelle” are inevitable.
There are lofty expectations in place when it comes to The Conjuring IP, but there were also surprisingly ambitious plans in place even during the production of the original movie. A connected Conjuring universe may not have been on anyone’s radar yet.

What’s the matter with Pearl? Plenty, as it turns out in Ti West’s terrifically enjoyable postscript to his spring release X, which saw a 1970s film crew fall brutally afoul of an elderly farmer and his wife while shooting a porno in their barn. Unusually for a horror film, X had the same actress — Mia Goth — as both the final kill (the farmer’s psychotic wife Pearl) and the final girl (sex-film starlet Maxine), and this intelligent, not to mention almost indecently hasty prequel explains the reasons.
Pearl, screening out of competition at the Venice Film Festival, is that rare horror franchise follow-up that, while mindful of expectations from its predecessor’s core gore audience, has considered artful new ways to drill down into the essence of the original.

With its list of new releases for September 2022, Prime Video is finally unveiling the most anticipated (and expensive) series in the streamer’s history.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will arrive to Prime Video’s servers on Sept. 2, 2022. This Lord of the Rings prequel, set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age, is in many ways the kind of TV property that Prime Video must have always wanted. It’s certainly the TV property most fitting with the company’s largesse and riches. The Rings of Power will cover the creation of the titular rings and many important events from Tolkien’s lore (condensed into a more TV-appropriate timeframe).
Middle-earth is going to be the happening spot on Amazon and the streaming world at large this month, but Prime Video does have a handful of other originals for the fantasy-phobic. Flight/Risk, a documentary about the Boeing 737 Max design disasters,...

Watching Ti West’s “X” (now in theaters from A24) feels like you are watching a classic horror film, one that was secreted away for decades because it’s just that extreme and scary.
It concerns a group of amateur pornographers, who travel to a backwoods Texas farmhouse to shoot their magnum opus “The Farmer’s Daughter.” Of course, while filming their cinematic triumph, they run afoul of the home’s elderly owners, including Pearl (also played by Goth), who longs to reclaim her youth by murdering everybody in the process. “X” is, in part, a throwback to old-school slasher films of the 1970s and ‘80s but it’s much more sophisticated and emotional than that; it’s a nuanced look at how the aging process can turn you into a monster. Youth is wasted on the young, indeed.

Back in 2005, Ti West first appeared on the scene with an odd little horror film called "The Roost" featuring killer bats, the reanimated dead, and Tom Noonan as a horror host. His follow up, the thrilling "Trigger Man," flew by viewers and went mostly underseen, but when West released "The House of the Devil" in 2009, he established himself as one of horror's most exciting new voices. In the years that followed, West put out a slew of horror films, like "Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever," "The Innkeepers," "The Sacrament," as well as contributing segments to "V/H/S" and "The ABCs of Death." Ti West made his name directing nimbly paced throwbacks to horror films of old, from his haunted house breakthrough “The House of the Devil” to his found footage film “The Sacrament.” But after directing six horror films in a row, with very few breaks in between, he decided to take some time off to make sure he didn’t start repeating himself.
While on his break from horror filmmaking, during which he directed for TV shows such as “Scream,” and “Tales From the Loop,” he thought about making a pure slasher film, something he hadn’t done before. Trying to find his own unique spin on the subgenre, he decided to make slasher film about people making a film. He wasn’t interested in making an overly meta piece about shooting a horror movie, so he eventually settled on a close counterpoint to his favorite genre: porn.

Bloody. Brutal. Grungier than a big-city back alley and more guts-strewn than a slaughterhouse. This is how you like your slasher-flick horror, and trust is when we say Ti West has your back. Part of a young, hungry generation of horror auteurs weaned on the grindhouse canon, he’s dabbled in a number of dark, dingy subgenres, from quick ‘n’ dirty sequels (Cabin Fever 2) to the slow-burn supernatural (The Innkeepers) to neo-Seventiesploitation (the cult thriller The Sacrament). But go back to his best-in-show entry from 2009, The House of the Devil,...

Romance may not be dead, but it sure is deadly in Ti West’s X, the latest film from the horror auteur best known for 2009’s satanic panic shocker, House of the Devil. West makes his way back into the horror fold after a bloody western detour in 2016’s In a Valley of Violence, and it’s a welcome return for one of the 21st centuries most interesting genre voices. Far from the slow burn storytelling of his last three horror features, House of the Devil, The Innkeepers, and The Sacrament; X is a balls-out sexy slasher that recalls his earliest work and proves that the much-maligned subgenre still has potential to surprise after over forty years of exploitation. The story follows a sextet of young, hungry...

Ti West's "X" is a nasty little horror flick. And boy, it sure is a good time at the movies.
The director of "The House of the Devil," "The Innkeepers," and "The Sacrament" is back with another slow-burning tale of terror, where the tension builds and builds and builds until everything explodes with a geyser of gore and a trail of bodies. In this case, those bodies belong to a crew of filmmakers and actors hoping to shoot an adult film on an isolated farm in the Texas countryside in 1979. Things go smoothly until they don't, and the cast...

Offseason, the new film from writer/director Mickey Keating opens with Ava Aldrich addressing the viewer in a scene that recalls Marianna Hill’s warning at the start of Messiah of Evil.
That film involved a woman’s trip to a touristy coastal town in search of her missing and presumed dead father, Offseason opens with Marie Aldrich heading to the touristy island where Ava is buried. It seems her grave was desecrated and her presence is required to remedy it.
As she and George arrive their trip is almost derailed. It seems the drawbridge to the island is raised during the offseason and the Bridge Man only relents and lowers it after finding out why she’s there. He also warns them that after tomorrow it’ll be locked until spring.

It’s a little surprising that “X” marks director Ti West’s first film for A24 since his approach to horror — emphasizing character and mood over jump scares, building slowly and steadily to a big bloody blowout — is so synced up with their house style. “X” is also his first feature since 2016, and his first horror film since 2013’s “The Sacrament”; he’s kept busy in the years since with plenty of television work, but this is what he does best, and it’s about time he got back to it.

Bloody Disgusting’s X movie review is spoiler free. It’s been almost an entire decade since writer/director Ti West‘s last horror feature, The Sacrament. Far too long. Ti West was so eager to get back to directing movies that, a few weeks before shooting his new one, he wrote another one in quarantine and shot it in secret. That was “Pearl,” the prequel to “X,” which A24 releases this week. “X,” a ’70s-set slasher movie that marks the genre filmmaker’s first feature in seven years, premiered at SXSW over the weekend with a surprise teaser for “Pearl” that announced the next chapter in a very unexpected new franchise, and West told IndieWire he had a possible third movie on the way.
“I’m trying to build a world out of all this, like people do these days,” he said in an interview ahead of the SXSW announcement. “You can’t make a slasher movie without a bunch of sequels.”

It's been a few year's since we've seen a new movie from Ti West but the director of The House of the Devil, The Inkeepers, and The Sacrament is back with what looks like another innovative horror film: X.
The movie stars Jenna Ortega, Kid Cudi, Brittany Snow, Mia Goth and Martin Henderson as a group of amateur creators who head out to rural Texas and rent a dilapidated cottage where they're going to make their mind-blowing porn flick. As one might expect, they get far more than they bargained for when one of the owners turns out to be a creepy old lady who may be possessed - or the devil incarnate, hard to tell other than to know for sure that shit is about to get very ugly.
West is never one to stick to convention and the fact that this...

Harold (Bruce Davison), his wife Betty (Arianne Zucker) and their daughters Maggie and Sarah (Holly Taylor and Rita Volk) live in an isolated farmhouse, many miles from their nearest neighbours. Harold rules over the family, enforcing a rigidly patriarchal interpretation of the bible. Hi, everyone! As we make our way through the week, we have another two-part video interview cued up from our Ihm: Revisited series. The next pair of interview clips feature indie horror actor Aj Bowen, who blew me away with his performance as Lewis in The Signal, and continued to knock my proverbial socks off in other films like The House of the Devil and A Horrible Way to Die, as well as recent films like I Trapped the Devil, Synchronicity, Teenage Cocktail, and The Sacrament.
In this first part of our interview with Bowen, he chatted about how Creepshow 3 kickstarted his career as he was getting his start as an actor, the collaborative process he experienced while working on The Signal, and how humbling the release of The Signal ended up being, despite enjoying a successful festival run and a slew of great critical responses.

Truth be told, the first time I watched She Dies Tomorrow, I felt utterly devastated afterward, but I felt lost in my thoughts about the film. A second viewing of She Dies Tomorrow really put all the puzzle pieces in place for me, though, and I think that, upon review, writer/director Amy Seimetz has crafted a beautifully told and bold cinematic rumination on mortality that lingers in your psyche for some time. The imagery is unforgettable, the performances across the board are top-notch, and while She Dies Tomorrow isn’t a film that I’d necessarily categorize as horror, the material is often haunting and alarming all the same.
She Dies Tomorrow first introduces us to Amy (Kate Lyn Sheil), a woman transfixed on something just outside of our viewpoint, but the pained look of her visage tells us everything we need to know in those opening moments. Amy is slowly unraveling,...

Dave Franco is hoping his first stab at directing will be a good one. The star of Now You See Me, Scrubs and The Disaster Artist will debut his first feature film next month – a horror, called The Rental.
With a cast led by Franco’s real-life wife Alison Brie (Glow), Dan Stevens (Apostle), Sheila Vand (Snowpiercer), and Jeremy Allen White (Shameless), the film presents itself as a pretty taut vacation thriller in its first trailer, which arrived online this week. Franco says he was mulling our ability to throw caution to the wind when it comes to a little R&r as he started writing the project with Easy creator Joe Swanberg.

Hired to shoot a behind-the-scenes movie for a senior classmate, Isora is advised to start filming his everyday life to improve his skills as a filmmaker. Early in this process, Isora shifts focus onto his own film. It is while having problems finding the lead that he hears of the legend of a mysterious girl. This girl shows up once every four years, always at the same recruiting event for school clubs. She is said to be so enigmatic that the director becomes obsessed and compelled to film her every moment, and that once he begins filming her, he must adhere to certain rules to ensure tragedy does not fall on his production.
The legend seems to come true as Isora meets a silent girl who he names Minami, and allows her to live with him so he can constantly film her. After finding his muse, Isora reaches out to his friend Ogawa,...

That said, I Trapped The Devil doesn’t exactly have a ‘Christmas spirit’ but it is set at Christmas, and the season does play a part in the movie. Writer/ Director Ari Aster set the bar impossibly high for himself last year with his feature debut Hereditary. One year later sees him limbo slightly under it with this beguiling, striking and surprisingly hilarious follow-up that tonally deviates from its predecessor but is none the less captivating. Unlike Hereditary’s burning terror, knife sharp frights and (what felt like) perpetual darkness, Midsommar is more illusory, expansive and visually astounding. Mostly set in glorious daylight with serene, breath-taking sceneries, Aster’s latest hums with vibrant colour in a plot permeated by grotesque surrealism which allures and repels in equal measure like a pixie vomiting petals.
Where Hereditary focused on a fractured family drama, Midsommar looks at strained teenage friendships in its tale of troubled student Dani Ardor (Florence Pugh). After devastating family tragedies and relationship dramas, Dani travels with boyfriend Christian (Jack Reynor) and anthropology student friends to a nine day,...
