How to describe how bad this is?
ronmello1 July 2018
Spoiler... This movie sucks... End of Spoiler

Want to get people out of your house? Put this movie on. Need to coerce some information from Al-Qaeda? Torture them with this movie.

It is just a bad movie with a good premise. Audio is good, but the editing is bad. Really, everyone is at the same dB level regardless of distance? No J or L audio cuts? The actors sounded like they were emotionlessly reading the script. The acting was on par with the audio with the laughable feign surprise. The video... actual quality of the video resolution... is good, but looks like they hired the local high school AV club and got the widest shots possible. Apparently they spared no expense on... something, maybe they ate well, but didn't have much left for effects or transitions.

To be honest, i couldn't watch any more than the first 10 minutes. Do yourself a favor and avoid Otherworld as if it was raised by a colony of lepers.

An Indie Indie movie. Very colourful
wsskfqy7 January 2024
Well, I've never tripped. But this movie is what it sounds like.

First of all, I love bad movies, just to see how bad they are. And I love Indie movies. I have the greatest respect for people who DO things instead of talking big. And I love colourful movies in beautiful settings and I love costumes. And I love CGI, obviously, or how would there be "magic" in films!

Now, imagine al of that, turned on maximum and multiply it by 10.

Seriously. Even the scenery was filtered through CGI to make it sparkly and rainbow-like. Almost everything that moved had little magical sparks flowing with the movement. The unicorns had glowing LED lit horns!

Come to think of it, it should have had an epilepsy warning!

The costumes. Well. One wizard had little fairies sitting on the brim of his wizard hat. They didn't move, so either they were supposed to be fairy decorations (which is weird - like loving dogs so putting plastic dog toys all over your hat), or they were dead stuffed fairies, which is even wierder). My guess is that they were supposed to be alive, but the CGI guy's skill set didn't reach quite that far.

Largest laugh was at the main female lead character's consuming. Her elf ears kept changing until evidently they fell off and she had normal ears in the last couple scenes! Very obviously. So while it may have been a part of the story, they might have put in a line of dialogue about it. Easily done, as she had other human attributes (like the ability to become hugely pregnant) while still being an elf (evidently their chest doesn't get any bigger when they are with child.). Imagine an incredibly thin woman with no bosom whatsoever, with an exercise ball under her dress. Watching them try to kiss and look passionate at the end was the comedic element.

I can't really complain about the plot as it's supposed to be an Irish myth. The music was good. Slightly annoying to see the magic sparks flying out of lyres & flutes all the time. The scenery was beautiful.

The battle scene was fun to watch as it was SOOOOOO bad. There was more pushing & bumping each others shoulders than fighting. But it looked like they were having so much FUN doing it. How do you look like you are in mortal combat when you are having so much fun!

I've been trying so hard to figure out why so many people gave it a 10. My husband says it's sarcasm.

But I think it's admiration. People (including myself) admire the effort, the work, the spirit and the dedication of the people involved in the movie. Yes, it might be that a role-playing society said, "Let's make a movie of what we do!" But they DID IT. Then they found a CGI guy who practiced every single skill he could find in the books at every opportunity. (Hint: Less is more.)

The accents are very strange, too. I am very bad recognising accents, but they just didn't match. The female lead sounded a bit Greek or Turkish or Eastern European to me, the male lead was very Irish I think (I found him hard to understand at all), others sounded vaguely American.

It's an unusual film. Thats the best I can say about the film.

However, the people involved in it are extraordinary. It's clear they put their heart and souls into it. It is worth watching just to pay homage to their work.

Utter rubbish
malcolmcleverly2 January 2019
Wow, what the heck is this? Poor story, wooden acting, lack of continuity. As another reviewer has said, it's like wandering into a hippy commune with a camcorder. Maybe it's best watched whilst on acid on something. Don't waste 80 minutes of your life on this, go for a walk, get outside, anything.

Possibly the worst film I've ever seen...
richardjohnclements11 August 2018
Horrible cinematography, utterly inexplicable and unfollowable plot. Terrible dialogue delivered by actors so incredibly wooden i thought they might start taking root. Very poor special effects.

I've given it 1 as the musical score isn't utterly without interest. Other than that failing to see any appeal at all. Trying to watch with my 6 and 9 year old daughters. They were both bored and wanting to turn it off after 10 minutes.

Haven't actually got to the end yet but writing the review to pass the time.

Not entirely sure how anyone could give this 10 out of 10...

Poor costumes, bad editing, bad dialogue, poor photography, music just ok. Not as wonderful as you would hope.
dickerta-831708 June 2018
Costumes look like costumes, not clothes that people would wear. The editing of the film makes it hard to follow at times. Dialogue delivered by "actors" is flat.pin American accents. But then, all of a sudden it goes into narration with heavy Irish accent. Little, if any attempt at authentic accents. Instead of showing, they spend time explaining plot. Lots of woodland scenes showed with no actors to take up time. Maypole dance inserted with no plot support. Music is added to fill in time not to help the story or setting mood. You get the feeling that, "We have all this Celtic music, we should cram it in." Long periods of music, dancing, not adding to plot. Slow movie, you keep wanting action. Special effects are nothing but poor. What is with a wizard wearing 21st century glasses?

terrible
scottyuk-5240814 October 2018
I'm amazed this film has a rating of 5.1 . It's like the director has walked into a hippy camp with a camera and rustled something together , the acting and dialogue are poor , the effects cheap , and the content lacking . It really is terrible , and worth a miss .

Redeemed only by the soundtrack
globalhiking19 January 2018
This film was a great disappointment. It consists mostly of poorly acted static scenes oddly edited together. There were occasions in the big battle sequence that almost captured fighting, but it was too fleeting to redeem the scene as a whole. Only the soundtrack held any interest at all. If you are looking for Irish folk tales Song of the Sea is vastly superior.

Fairy tale cheesiness
Leofwine_draca12 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
THE OTHERWORLD is an extremely cheesy fantasy indie based on the Celtic world of fairy tales and imagination. Basically it's about a bunch of actors who are gaudily dressed up in face paint and the like, hanging around in the woods while a few medieval themes and settings are utilised at times. It's a typical low rent production, lacking proper production values, although the budget does stretch to the odd cheesy CGI effect. The whole thing is geared towards children. The only way I can see someone enjoying this is if they're in a very forgiving mood.

A lovely indie movie, enjoyable and full of imagination
tarynsmee25 June 2018
A lovely indie movie, enjoyable and full of imagination. If you enjoy fantasy this is a good movie for you. It is boiling over with the magic of folklore and has a great soundtrack. Along with wonderful costumes and delightful performances, this is a movie that makes you feel warm inside. You will be inspired to go out to the forest in search of sacred trees and fairies.

Great Film!

Great movie, perfect for the fantasy genre! I loved the celtic/bagpipe soundtrack. The background, settings, and costumes were beautiful. The range of subtitles in so many different languages is awesome.Overall, I loved the story and the film was put together beautifully. I would definitely suggest this film to my friends!

Fairy good!
A charming, heartwarming adventure for both the young, and young-at-heart, this offers a fresh perspective on ancient myths and largely succeeds in bringing them to life. Reminiscent of the popular 1980s fantasy Legend, it offers a mixture of humour, romance, heroism and mild peril that is sure to have youngsters spellbound across it's 90-odd minutes. The special effects are good too, with lots of colour and light suitable for the themes involved, and some attractive locations (real and CGI) help bring the tale to life, while the vibrant and evocative Celtic soundtrack provides a stirring backdrop to the tales of derring-do.

Well worth a watch, and guaranteed to keep the kids quiet for an hour or so.

Finally something different. A different type of film, different story, different creative approach, with new and rising talent which I hope to see more. The actor playing Balor is one that you start cheering for even though he is the bad guy. I loved the role Gisela Pereira played as Immrama. It also has a stellar cast, a great mix of mysticism and fantasy.

I also love that the film suited for all ages, a little of romance, a little action, oh and many beautiful fairies. Hooray for indie film!

A treat for the fans of myth, fantasy and romance
eanguelova-442541 February 2018
Set in mossy forests, sunlit fields and river valleys, the movie has a charming atmosphere, further strengthened by an enchanting soundtrack. If you love magic and mystery, this is your film! Based on Irish and Welsh folklore, this is a tale of the links between the human and fairy worlds, replete with Beltane celebrations, maypole dancing, divination and Druidry. At the heart of the movie is the enduring love of Immrama and Lugh, beings from different worlds, who are willing to go through great challenge and sacrifice to stay together. This lesson of love and loyalty makes the film fitting for the whole family. It's optimistic and imaginative, a breath of fresh air for anyone who needs a bit of magic in their day.

A Magical Film
julesf-882485 July 2017
I loved this movie! I was first attracted by the 'cover', as it had a very mystical feel to it, and I knew then that it would be the type of film that I like to watch.'The Otherworld' has a retro feel to it, but it was well-suited to the subject matter. The filmography is very atmospheric, and the scenery beautiful. I loved the haunting soundtrack too. There are some great characters in it - most notably the wizard Gwydion, who looked like he'd escaped from Terry Pratchett's Discworld! Drawing on material from Irish and Welsh legends, this will have great appeal to those who have a pagan leaning or love fairies (or unicorns!).

Pleasantly Surprised
matthewplewe22 July 2017
I stumbled across this movie and was very surprised with how much I enjoyed it, there's very few pagan movies out there. Being Irish I was excited to see a movie about the mythology surrounding my heritage, the film blends Celtic and pagan folk tales and myths into it's on unique story. It's not something I know much about and despite being a romantic action movie (and a good one at that) it also educated me haha. Not something you expect normally. I particularly enjoyed the Druid, the character design stood out and the way he seemed to be behind the destiny of the story, weaving the story to push the characters to their end goal of happiness was inspiring. Lugh's battle leading the painted Irish against the supernatural demons was reminiscent of the film Braveheart, if you had replaced the British with something much scarier. I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in Celtic or Pagan stories.

Unlike any other film
bradleyahrendts3 June 2017
This film is a hidden gem. I myself, am a lover of all kinds of mythology, but Celtic mythology has to be one of the most otherworldly (no pun intended). It was able to capture the surreal nature of the story in a way that is digestible to the audience. I definitely like how much of an attempt there was to be true to what the story is presenting. The filmmakers weren't timid in bringing this type of story to us in the form of cinema, and I can love this film for that alone, but I did have a blast watching this movie.

Glad I stumbled upon this movie on tubi.

10/10 all y'all dears who made this film.

I love the wings and the sparkles. The costumes are splendid, some are gorgeous and some are hilarious. The leather armor is amazing.

I love how the dark scenes are for real dark.

I love the mixed instruments from different countries.

I love the way I kept thinking I knew where it was being filmed but then next scene I'd be like... um nope. I don't know where this is.

I love all the different accents.

The big battle scene is dah freakin bomb.

I watch a lot of Xena Warrior Princess (on my third run through 6 seasons) and this is just as good as any Season 1 Xena.

Such a fun film
julesam1310 April 2018
Finding an interesting film to watch comes with it's trials and errors -- but finding that one film that is enjoyable to watch no matter what is definitely difficult. I stumbled upon this film one night, and I'm definitely glad I did!

It's a fun, Celtic mythology story that I instantly found myself drawn into. The score helps set the mood, the acting is just how it should be, the special effects are actually quite great. This is just an overall fun movie to watch if you're looking for something light to watch with the family over dinner or late one night!

It was a surprising movie to discover!
martanores20 April 2018
The story is beautiful, the atmosphere is amazing, it gives a feeling of peace and love. Good movie to reconnect, or discover, the Celtic Culture and its traditions, which is a beautiful part of history. It is an incredible plot of love, war, and family, with the problems associate with that in two different worlds (Literally!) The characters are lovely and you can connect with them, and relate with some of the stories. It is highly recommended for family moments, kids are going to love it, and adults are going to enjoyed a little bit more than an hour of beautiful music, scenes and stories.

A magical fairytale love story
joellenanula24 March 2018
This is a film that quickly transports you to another world. The special effects create a magical atmosphere, drawing the viewer into an enchanting blend of Celtic myth and fairytale escapism. Most of all, the endearingly wistful character of Immrama keeps you glued to her love story until the very last moment. For lovers of fantasy and great storytelling alike, this is a film you won't want to miss.

Magical Movie - Fun for the Whole Family!
kristabasis13 April 2018
The Otherworld is a charming Celtic romance filled with traditional Irish music and special effects. It's a fun and whimsical film. Set in lush forest surroundings, the film doesn't detract from this beautiful setting by adding unnecessary dialogue. The movie has a magical "dream like" quality from beginning to the very end. A plethora of magical costumes and enchanting characters make this a delight for the whole family. At the end of the The Otherworld movie, you'll feel transported to another world!

An Enchanting Fairy Tale That I Couldn't Stop Watching!
sarahansen-6712811 April 2018
This film is an absolutely fascinating fairy tale. From the minute it started I felt like I was transported into another magical place and away from the hustle and bustle of real life. I'm not super familiar with traditional Celtic folklore but this movie kept me engaged the entire time. A lot of fairy tales out there rely too much on a love story or just adventure as the plot, but this story had a perfect mixture of everything. The Fairy in the movie is great! Definitely recommend this movie! Even if you aren't very familiar with Irish myths and Celtic tales.

Fairy fun
coolsal-1928126 February 2018
If you're into fantasy, druids, fairies, then this is the film for you! It's got love in it, war in it... There's a lot of relaxed, slow scenes particularly in the beginning but there's also action. For an indie film, this is great for fantasy lovers. Really liked the main character, she was cute haha! There wasn't much unexpected, but that's not what I went looking for. Fabulous. Oh, and, I think my favourite part was actually the soundtrack! So fitting, and lovely to listen to. As it's a PG everyone can watch it which is nice. Top marks!
