I knew Forest Whitaker was a great actor until this series which proved to me he's an excellent actor. The realism of this teleplay didn't have to resort to some didactic preachy script. It was of the times and the portrayal of this ensemble nailed it!
I say that the Johnson character was an escape artist because of how he played chess in the series both on the board and off the board.
The two actors that portrayed Malcolm X (the 20th Century transformational man) were an incredible likeness to the real Malcolm and how they both maintained an ethical relationship with Johnson was pure artistry. An incredible series.
