This episode, to me, defines what makes the show so addictive and compelling. The ending, for instance, has the President getting out of his stretch limo with the First Lady (who begs him not to leave the car, and just ditch the whole gala) and being shot! You have Quinn learning that perhaps Huck drugged her, put in the private plane of a Supreme Court Justice, and taken across the country to "start a new life". You have the President receiving photos of Olivia engaged in relations with his fiercest rival, Senator Edison, and his reaction of emotional turmoil is so rich. Olivia just watches from behind a window glass as Cy rambles on about political topics to the President and her aching is so especially pouring outward even if she wouldn't want it to. But the butter to the bread of this episode that really sets it off is Cy's hubby unable to resist his journalistic urgings to pursue a possible voting machine scandal brought to his attention by David Rosen. Harrison has to handle a situation involving a CEO (the great character actor veteran Chelcie Ross), who had built the company from nothing to billions, perhaps off his rocker as his son (Jason London) could be on the verge of signing over the whole deal from a private business to the public. This episode shows Abby trying to get over Rosen with Harrison realizing he is responsible for usurping what could have been a happy relationship. Just so much to consume from this episode. A lot going on. The show just keeps taking you further into its allure, and almost every episode has a cliffhanger. To keep doing that is extremely difficult, but Scandal does so quite amazingly.
Hollis Doyle has just been a thorn in the ass of Cy and the Presidency, passing off his desires for them to follow (such as backing a particular candidate for the Majority leader position "through the proper back end channels"), with them often doing so as thanks for how he helped them (the group responsible for the scandal that helped to elect Fitz were assisted greatly by Doyle). This time, the way they handle his recommendation leading to Edison's win of it, leaves Doyle quite disgusted and when he's not happy, there come the threats. Defiance, Ohio, was the location where the voting machines might have been rigged and Cy's journalist partner could very well uncover a major scandal that tests their relationship and his own loyalty to the integrity of a reporter, the news story, and right and wrong.
