Following William Levy’s success starring in ViX’s Montecristo last year, the TelevisaUnivision streamer has signed Secuoya Studios and William Levy Entertainment to a production deal. Together, the companies will develop two new projects – the series, Arcadia (w/t) and the film, Bajo Un Volcán (w/t) – both starring Levy, who will also executive produce.
Arcadia (w/t) tells the story of Pablo (Levy), a man who flees due to a broken heart and a violent past. Under a false identity, he starts a new life with his son in Arcadia, an idyllic town in the Canary Islands. Bajo Un Volcán (w/t), follows an ill-timed and forbidden love happening amid a natural catastrophe. Both projects are set to start production later in the year.

Netflix’s The Brothers Sun had a solid opening on Nielsen’s streaming charts, but the show took a sizable leap forward in its second week of release.
The series, starring Michelle Yeoh, Sam Song Li and Justin Chien, grew by 38 percent over its debut week to record 960 million minutes of viewing for Jan. 8-14. That was good for third place among original series, behind Fool Me Once (2.4 billion minutes of viewing) — which was also the No. 1 overall title for the second straight week — and Reacher (1.06 billion), which recorded its fifth straight week over the billion-minute mark.
Disney+ and Hulu also saw a good start for Echo, its first binge-released Marvel series and the first Marvel show in the Disney+ era to receive a TV-ma rating. The five-episode show drew 731 million minutes of viewing for the week. That’s above recent premieres for shows like Loki and Secret Invasion, but...

Tyler Perry on ‘A Jazzman’s Blues,’ a Film 27 Years in the Making, Inspired by His Childhood (Video)
“A Jazzman’s Blues” was a movie adventure 27 years in the making for Tyler Perry, who wrote the screenplay in 1995, the first ever for the prodigious writer-director-actor-magnate. After the project stalled in the mid-2000s, cameras finally started rolling last year in Savannah, Georgia. And in 2022, the sprawling, music-filled Southern Gothic romance of Perry’s dreams was born.
Perry gathered much of his cast, including Amirah Vann, Solea Pfeiffer, Ryan Eggold, Austin Scott, Milauna Jackson, Lana Young and lead Joshua Boone to sit down with Executive Editor, Awards, Steve Pond at TheWrap and Shutterstock’s Interview and Portrait Studio at the Toronto Film Festival.
“A Jazzman’s Blues” tells the story of Bayou (Boone) and Leanne (Pfeiffer), who get caught up in the tempest of jazz, secrets, family abuse, and institutional racism. “I was 26 or 27 with great ambition and a lot of time,” Perry said. “Growing up in rural Louisiana, I know these people very well,...

Looks like Kevin James is going to be leading a Netflix original film, and despite the above featured image, it is a not a Paul Blart: Mall Cop movie. The streaming service has announced today that the actor/comedian will be heading the film entitled True Memoirs Of An International Assassin.
The film's synopsis is as follows:
"A mild-mannered would-be author gets mistaken for a killer-for-hire when his fictional novel about an international assassin is published as a true story. The book is a huge success and he is suddenly kidnapped and taken to Venezuela and forced into an assassination plot."
True Memoirs Of An International Assassin is directed by Jeff Wadlow, who is likely best known for directing Kick-ass 2, and will be hitting Netflix some time in 2016.

What will March bring to Netflix? Plenty of great TV shows, some killer recent and classic movies, and a slew of highly anticipated Netflix Originals.
First off, there's more amazing TV coming to Netflix in March than we've seen in the past six, with new seasons of "Mad Men," "Glee," and "Archer" coming to the streaming service. What's more? The complete series of "3rd Rock From the Sun" (Yes!) and "A Different World" are also being added. For the latter, I plan on queueing up some "very special episodes" that remind me of my childhood. Also, Marisa Tomei was on it. Remember?! In addition to the shows you know, some spankin' new Netflix Originals are being added: Tina Fey's half-hour comedy "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," starring "The Office's" Ellie Kemper, and "Bloodline," a dramatic thriller starring Oscar-winner Sissy Spacek.
In terms of movies, Netflix is not disappointing. Recent releases...

I kid, I kid, but I’m also kind of serious. When someone mentions Tyler Perry, it’s only fair to think of him dressing up in old lady drag, bible thumping, and moralizing about how women shouldn’t open their legs for any good looking dude like they are a 24-hour Golden Corral. (Seriously, did you see Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor? Way to send a message to women that if they are not faithful, they’re going to get AIDS and everyone will hate them. Ugh!)
But here’s the thing: Ty Ty isn’t the owner of these kinds of movie tropes, so it’s about time we stop acting like it and recognize other movies that rely on these storytelling motifs. For example:

Heaven Is For Real, the faith-based movie starring Greg Kinnear, Kelly Reilly and Thomas Haden Church, had a strong run in theaters earlier this spring behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Now it’s making just as heavenly a debut on Rentrak’s weekly DVD and Blu-Ray sales and rental charts, topping one Top 10 and second only to Liam Neeson’s latest actioner, Non-Stop, on the other. The only other debut in the rentals this week was Tyler Perry‘s latest, The Single Moms Club, distributed by Lionsgate and coming home at No. 9. Dom Hemingway I quite enjoyed Dom Hemingway if only for Jude Law's brash performance, but it seems others weren't as taken with it as I was. I will say this, you can do a lot worse when it comes to rentals or even purchases this week so give this one a shot, I think you'll like it.
Witness for the Prosecution One film I feel any cinema fan will certainly enjoy is Witness for the Prosecution and my dumb ass was too slow on the uptake when Kino sent out notice they were releasing a new Blu-ray edition of the film so I missed out on a review copy. Directed by Billy Wilder this is a film that will one day be in my Best Movies section, check it out.
Blue Ruin Solid movie, though I can't help but feel people got a little too carried away in their praise.

Exclusive: Own: Oprah Winfrey Network has assembled the principal cast of the latest Tyler Perry drama series, the upcoming If Loving You Is Wrong (formerly Single Mom’s Club). Premiering in September, the new series, created, written, directed and executive produced by Perry, follows the relationships of a group of husbands and wives that live and love on the same street. While the neighbors come from very different backgrounds, their lives are similar — raising children, dealing with exes, worrying about money and keeping romance in their relationships. But just below the surface — secrets, lies and deception threaten to destroy what they have built. Amanda Clayton (John Carter) plays Alex who is married to Brad, played by Aiden Turner (All My Children). Together they have two children. The couple’s relationship seems solid, but a secret threatens to derail their marriage. Heather Hemmens (Hellcats) plays Marcie, a real estate agent married to Randal,...

Movies about mothers, whether they are single or married, have been coming out in droves lately. It was only a few months ago that we saw Tyler Perry’s The Single Moms Club and now, just in time for Mother’s Day, we have the comedy Moms’ Night Out.
The film follows Allyson (Sarah Drew), who has just endured another energy draining week of caring for her children while her husband Sean (Sean Astin) is out of town yet again. In desperate need of a break, Allyson invites her two best friends, Izzy (Andrea Logan White) and the pastor’s wife Sondra (Patricia Heaton), to spend an evening with her where they can relax and let their hair down. What begins as a fun night out soon turns into a chaotic evening which involves a boatload of misunderstandings that will have moms and dads chasing after each other as they...

Ace in the Hole (Criterion Collection) I've only seen Billy Wilder's Ace in the Hole once before and it's as relevant now as it was when it was made as Kirk Douglas plays a reporter who ends up in Albuquerque and finds himself at the center of the story of a lifetime and he milks it for every headline he can. It's essentially a perfect example of today's Internet journalism.

Los Angeles (AP) — A femme-fueled comedy beat a superhero blockbuster at the box office this weekend. After holding the top position for three weeks, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" has been topped by "The Other Woman" for the No. 1 spot. Fox's revenge comedy, starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton, debuted with $24.7 million, while Disney-Marvel's "Captain America," led by Chris Evans, grossed $16 million in its fourth weekend, bringing its domestic total to $225 million. The PG-13 rating of Nick Cassavetes directed "The Other Woman" — about three ladies wronged by a three-timing spouse played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau of "Game of Thrones" — helped it draw a larger audience, says Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst of box-office tracker Rentrak. "The rating was perfect," he said. "If you are going for the mainstream audience who is looking for something that has a little bit of an edge, but not too much, you can hit...

Except for Johnny Depp, there wasn't much to laugh about at the box office last weekend — or the one before that, or the one before that, either. That's because other than animated fare and Wes Anderson's quirky “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” a comedy movie hasn't connected at the box office since “Ride Along,” and that came out in January. A few have tried, but “Tyler Perry's The Single Moms Club” misfired, Jason Bateman's “Bad Words” underwhelmed in its wide release and, last weekend, Marlon Wayans’ “A Haunted House 2” failed to match the original film's opening. But starting Friday,...

Led by 300: Rise of An Empire and Divergent, the domestic box office totaled $801 million in March 2014. That's down three percent year-to-year, and off 15 percent from 2012's record $943 million. For the first quarter of 2014, domestic box office totaled $2.4 billion. That's up five percent from 2013, but down from 2012, 2010 and 2009.300: Rise of an Empire opened on the first weekend of March, and won the month with $101.4 million. That's nowhere close to its predecessor, which had earned $181 million through the same point (and much more when adjusting for ticket price changes). Still, it's doing strong business overseas, and should ultimately be a success for Warner Bros.In second place, young-adult adaptation Divergent earned just over $96 million in its first 11 days. That's not on par with Twilight or The Hunger Games, but is strong enough that Summit is going to move forward aggressively with their sequel plans.Mr. Peabody & Sherman wasn't far behind with $95.1 million.

New Ya franchise tries to escape Hunger Games shadow, the Muppets come in a gloomy second, while Wes Anderson is on track for a career best
Divergent storms to the top
The latest wannabe Ya (young adult) franchise from Lionsgate has got off to a fairly good start with the $56m estimated weekend haul. It was never going to beat the $152.5m first weekend of The Hunger Games back in March 2012, which is the obvious, if unfair, comparison. Even Divergent's producer Lucy Fisher hinted at this in my recent interview with her on Screen Daily. Suzanne Collins's Hunger Games books have sold loads more than Veronica Roth's Divergent trilogy, while Jennifer Lawrence had a wider exposure heading into The Hunger Games than rising star Shailene Woodley did before the weekend. Fisher even went as far as to say the movies were dissimilar, but that's not true: both...

Divergent may not be impressing critics anytime soon, but the action-packed beginning to yet another young adult-themed trilogy got a good head start on its $85 million costs with an estimated $56 million at the box office, far and away the big winner. In a surprisingly distant second place, Muppets Most Wanted ended up much more favorable with critics, but not audiences, earning only an estimated $16.5 million. Its debut take was comparable to the third week gross of Mr. Peabody & Sherman, which picked up an estimated $11.7 million. While none of the top three are domestic winners, Mr. Peabody & Sherman at least has made money counting worldwide take, while the others still have a ways to go…although still with a chance to do so.

Divergent has debuted in the number-one spot at the Us box office.
The adaptation of Veronica Roth's young adult novel - which stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Kate Winslet - took an estimated $56 million during its opening weekend.

Mr Peabody & Sherman slipped to third place and fell 46% to $11.7 million in its third weekend of release.

The top-12 domestic weekend box office estimates for Sunday, March 23, 2014 are in. Rentrak is reporting Divergent was No. 1 with a huge $56 million. Muppets Most Wanted came in second with a less than stellar $16.5 million.

As expected, Divergent took the number one spot at the Us box office this weekend and earned an estimated $56 million. There was some worry that the hyped young adult novel adaptation wouldn’t be able to draw a crowd, but its off to a good start. Divergent had an estimated production budget of $85 million, so it should have no problem making that back in the next week. For fans of the movie, a sequel is guaranteed at this point.
Muppets Most Wanted placed second with $16.5, which is a little disappointing compared to the $29.3 million start for The Muppets back in 2011. Still, the movie carries a modest (for a studio pic) $50 million budget, so it shouldn’t have a problem getting out of the red.
Interesting items to note include 300: Rise of an Empire nearing the $100 million mark in the us, while The Lego Movie is closing in on $250 million.

The final numbers are in and as much as it looks like a down weekend, it was actually an improvement on last year when Oz The Great and Powerful when in its second frame. Same goes with this weekend as a holdover takes the top spot ahead of a couple of new releases. Rising to #1 after a second place finish last weekend is Mr. Peabody & Sherman with $21.8 million, a $600,000 increase over Sunday's estimates. The film flip-flopped with last weekend's champion, 300: Rise of an Empire, which added $100,000 to its estimate for a $19.2 million second weekend, a drop of 57.4% from its opening. Dreamworks' Need for Speed wasn't very big off the starting block, coming in with only $17.8 million in its first weekend and Tyler Perry suffered the worst opening for any of his films as The Single Moms Club tallied only $8 million. It's the first of Perry's releases to open below $10 million.
