K-Pop legend BTS may be on hiatus but fans are decidedly not. Concert film BTS: Yet To Come hit no. 5 at the North American Box office this weekend with 5.1 million on 1,100+ screens, for a cume topping 7.8 million from the first showing Feb. 1.
The group announced last year it was planning to take a break. In October, after their one-off live concert to support the bid by Busan, Korea’s second biggest city, for the World Expo 2030, BTS said its seven members were planning to fulfill the Korean government’s mandatory military service and reconvene as a group in 2025. That concert footage has been cut, re-edited and remixed for the big screen.
“The members of BTS are currently moving forward with plans to fulfill their military service. After the phenomenal concert to support Busan’s bid for the World Expo 2030, and as each individual embarks on solo endeavors, it’s the...

Before the weekend, it looked like M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller “Knock at the Cabin” would win the weekend quite definitively. But as numbers started coming in for it and Paramount’s new comedy “80 for Brady,” things were looking like it may be a tighter race for first place.
Universal released the former, starring Dave Bautista, Ben Aldridge, and Jonathan Groff, into 3,643 theaters with Thursday previews that amounted to 1.4 million and a Friday opening of 5.4 million (including those previews). By comparison, “80 for Brady,” which united Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Sally Field, and Rita Moreno for the true story of octogenarian besties with dreams of attending the Super Bowl, would be released into 3,912 theaters with 1.27 million grossed in earlier previews. That ended up with slightly less for 4.7 million on Friday, benefitting from theater chains offering reduced ticket prices for all showings.
Both movies generally received mixed-to-positive reviews, with Shyamalan doing slightly better with critics,...

Japanese animation film “The First Slam Dunk” was the undisputed champion at the South Korean box office over the weekend. Not only did depose “Abatar: The Way of Water” from first place it also grew its week-on-week performance by 10 – in its fifth weekend on release.
A week earlier the two top titles were much closer. Korean box office charts which rank performance by the number of tickets sold placed “The First Slam Dunk” on top. But in terms of gross receipts, “Avatar 2” had been the top seller.
Over the latest weekend “The First Slam Dunk” earned 2.89 million from 276,000 tickets sold., making it a clear winner over “Avatar 2” which pulled in 1.35 million from 114,000 tickets.
“The First Slam Dunk” has been a leggy hit performer in its native Japan and in other Asian markets. In Korea, it has performed unusually steadily, earning between 2 million and 3 million for five consecutive weekends.

For the first time in nearly two months, the No. 1 film on the weekend box office charts is not “Avatar: The Way of Water. The new top film is Universal and M. Night Shyamalan’s “Knock at the Cabin” with a 14.2 million opening weekend.
The horror film starring Dave Bautista is hitting the very low end of pre-release projections for an opening in the mid-to-high teens and is the lowest domestic opening ever for a Shyamalan film. With a reported 20 million budget financed by Shyamalan, “Knock at the Cabin” should be able to easily get into the black over the course of February, but it’s not likely to leg out particularly well at the box office with a C on CinemaScore to go with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 68 critics and 64 audience.
Still, despite the career-low opening for Shyamalan, it is the director’s seventh film to open No. 1 at the box office,...

M. Night Shyamalan’s horror film “Knock at the Cabin” collected 14.2 million in its opening weekend, enough to top box office charts and dethrone “Avatar: The Way of Water” after spending seven weeks at No. 1.
The creepy thriller, from Universal, just barely beat the weekend’s other new wide release, “80 for Brady,” which scored in second place with 12.5 million from 2,912 North American theaters. That’s a major win for Paramount, which backed the sports comedy starring Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno and Sally Field, because older audiences have been reluctant to go to theaters in pandemic times.
Critics weren’t impressed by “80 for Brady,” which holds a 64 on Rotten Tomatoes, but that doesn’t matter. Audiences were charmed by the combined wattage of the four Hollywood icons, who play best friends that travel to the Super Bowl to watch their hero, Tom Brady. It’s possible the...
