"Office Space," Mike Judge's satirical take on white collar office culture, disappointed at the box office but soon became a cult favorite after it arrived in 1999. That was mostly thanks to home video sales and Comedy Central airing the film multiple times after its theatrical run. But "Office Space" thoroughly deserved whatever cult status it attained, because it always felt very much ahead of its time.
The film stars Ron Livingston as Peter Gibbons, a put-upon programmer who spends his days amid the bleakly oppressive environs of software company Initech. Given that nominations in most categories for the Oscars and Bafta Film Awards are determined by similar processes – for example, chapter voting – and members of the two film academies are similar in outlook, it’s no surprise to see similarities in the two sets of nominations.
Oscar and Bafta are in agreement that this year Oppenheimer is the broadest achievement, earning 13 nominations for both awards, followed by Poor Things, with 11 nods at both.
There are, however, some notable differences in taste and opinion among the two sets of voters. Barbie was considered to have under-performed at Bafta with five nominations,...

There’s “HBO Max” and then there’s everyone else.
On the backs of Succession and The Last of Us, HBO and its streaming counterpart Max led the list of winners at Monday’s 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards. While the TV Academy ceased breaking out wins by platform, The Hollywood Reporter tallied up all the trophies from two nights of Creative Emmys as well as the Primetime ceremony and the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed HBO and Max easily topped rival Netflix with 31 statuettes.
Streaming giant Netflix finished second — again — with 22 wins thanks in large part to Beef’s sweep of the limited series category. John Landgraf’s Disney-backed cable network FX delivered an impressive year with 16 wins, with The Bear sweeping in the comedy category and leading all winners in awards that represent TV’s best from 2023. As someone with a disability, who works in the entertainment industry, when I hear about a documentary or narrative about someone with a disability, I immediately get suspicious. And that suspicion comes from knowing what the history of disability representation has been in the past. Many times, the stories and characters have been problematic and harmful.

For us heathens that brandish figurative razor blade-endowed flat caps stateside as (un)official members of the Peaky Blinders crew, it’s been a particularly strenuous month or so. Season 4 of Steven Knight’s addictive gangster drama has been airing new episodes weekly in Europe since November 15th. Considering the manner in which season 3 concluded, international employees of Shelby Company Ltd have been suffering through their own form of detox, desperately resisting spoilers each passing Wednesday.
Thankfully, Netflix will provide the fix by releasing all six episodes of season 4 on December 21st. It’s a largely meaningless conciliation for enthusiasts, no doubt, as the entirety of season 4 will have already premiered overseas by that time, but I digress.
For those needing a refresher – in the waning moments of season 3, the Shelby family were celebrating their triumph over the Russians inside Tommy’s office while he distributed the spoils of the Blinders’ latest victory amongst them.

It’s all too appropriate that Monday’s episode of Dancing With the Stars was dubbed “A Night At the Movies,” because the two-hour broadcast contained some seriously cinematic plot twists.
A couple that earned its first pair of 10s just last Monday was knocked back down into seven-and-eight territory. Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli were both compelled to take their “six” paddles (!) out of storage for one particularly bad routine. And, after reigning for the past two weeks as the duo to beat, Jordan and Lindsay were bested in the scoring department by another couple.

Drew Scott had never gotten a spray tan before, but he happily obliged when his Dancing with the Stars partner Emma Slater offered to give him one for Latin Night on the ABC reality competition.
Slater brought the Property Brothers star over to her house to administer the spray tan, though she did bring in reinforcements.
“I mean, I was helped by a technical professional, because if I had done the whole thing, he’d have been white on side and tan on the other,” Slater told reporters after Monday’s episode of DWTS.
Still, the spray tanning process didn’t go as planned.

Professional hitman Darius Kinkaid (Jackson) and executive bodyguard Michael Bryce (Reynolds) have both been around a long time. So when Kinkaid is coerced by the government into testifying against a foreign dictator, he’s dropped into the hands of a reluctant Bryce, who wisely wants nothing to do with the man. Movies being movies, this means that the pair should expect to be spending a lot of time together in the imminent future: from England to the Netherlands, in fact.
Likewise, stars Jackson and Reynolds have both been around awhile too, and they easily slip into their respective roles. The Hitman’s Bodyguard is essentially “Samuel L. Jackson Says Motherfucker: The Movie”, playing off the actor’s usual sweary persona even more than his Snakes on a Plane.

On “Game of Thrones,” Littlefinger might be the most dangerous man in Westeros, but he may have met his match.
Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish (Aidan Gillen) is the epitome of a Westerosi success story. Although of low birth in this feudal society, his ambition, wits and ruthlessness allowed him to rise in the ranks until he finally became the Lord Protector of the Vale.
In contrast, Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) was born into nobility but had much of his comfort and privilege stripped from him: half of his family members have been killed, he lost his ability to walk, and as the new Three-Eyed Raven, he is no longer heir to Winterfell.

In contrast, Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) was born into nobility but had much of his comfort and privilege stripped from him: half of his family members have been killed, he lost his ability to walk, and as the new Three-Eyed Raven, he is no longer heir to Winterfell.

The Lovers is a slyly funny comedy in which Debra Winger and Tracy Letts play a long-married couple who are both secretly cheating with a lover. But they find their secret love affairs are unexpectedly complicated by a new sexual attraction – to each other.
Debra Winger and Tracy Letts deliver delightful performances as the long-married, philandering couple. Mary and Michael are on the far side of middle-age and the marriage has been dull routine for sometime. Their current lovers are younger, but not by that much. Mary is wooed by romantic Irish writer Robert (Aidan Gillen, Game Of Thrones’ Littlefinger) with a sweet tenderness but he wants her to commit to him. Michael has his hands full with Lucy (Melora Walters), a fiery dance teacher, who also is tired of waiting...

If you were hoping for Monday’s episode of Dancing With the Stars to be shocking and unpredictable, bad news: Everything unfolded in exactly the way you’d expect for a Week 2 outing.
Professional athletes delivered many of the evening’s most electric routines. A pro dancer was injured. Charo was, once again, a little insane. And, when it came time for one couple to be eliminated, the first pair ousted likely did not come as much of a surprise.
But I’d expect nothing less from the second episode of Dancing‘s 24th season, and Monday’s installment — despite...

With Kingpin and Bullseye also enjoying their own series at the moment, it makes a lot of sense to mine Daredevil‘s supporting cast some more and give Elektra her own solo book once again. The Man Without Fear’s ninja lover has had her ups – the original Frank Miller run with the character – and downs – the awful Jennifer Garner movie – over the years, but if handled well the character still has a lot of potential. This opening issue isn’t particularly strong on its own, but it does hold promise for the future.

10 Things I Hate About Life starting filming in 2012. Four years later, it's disappeared. What's happened?
1999’s 10 Things I Hate About You was one of the prize picks from a rich selection of teen movies of that particular era. Loosely based on William Shakespeare’s The Taming Of The Shrew, the movie starred Julia Stiles and the late Heath Ledger in its lead roles, with an impressive supporting cast including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Allison Janney and Larisa Oleynik.
It was, in hindsight, a modest box office success, bringing in just over $50m off a $30m budget. But for those schooled on 1990s teen cinema, 10 Things I Hate About You is regularly cited as a favourite. With good reason, too: it’s a very good film, that’s stood the test of time well. It’s also one more reason why the world misses Heath Ledger.

On the cusp of a war for control of Westeros, “Game of Thrones” proffers a pair of set pieces to match its grand design. The first, in “Battle of the Bastards,” is a feat of careful chaos, in which Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon) commands his forces to encircle the small army of Jon Snow (Kit Harington); the second, in “The Winds of Winter,” is an act of cruel cunning, in which Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) dispatches her enemies by turning to mass destruction. Both, coming near the conclusion of the HBO series’ sixth season, punctuate an accelerating arc, the once far-flung characters converging on one another as “the great game” nears its close: Here, the prestige epic emerges as a combustible crowd-pleaser, now as content to reward its viewers as it once was to surprise us.

If you were to poll a large group of gamers regarding which developers they consider to have the best overall track record, you’d likely get a lot of repeated answers. Many would look to Rockstar and its studios, or Naughty Dog, which is another incredibly talented team. Neither would be wrong, nor would an assortment of other answers. That said, one developer that would make the top of my list, and maybe wouldn’t receive the recognition it deserves, is Finland’s Remedy Entertainment. They’re the folks who brought us such great interactive experiences as Max Payne, Alan Wake and Alan Wake’s American Nightmare.
Remedy is back this month with a new and very ambitious project. Of course, I’m talking about Quantum Break, which is a game that was first shown all the way back at the Xbox One’s reveal event. It captivated our attention then,...

Last week, I published my review of the first half of Daredevil season 2. Over the weekend, I watched the remaining six episodes, and I have some more thoughts — first general, non-spoiler ones, followed by more specific and spoiler-filled thoughts on each episode — coming up just as soon as I inherit the tapes with the car... In some ways, the back half of the season was an improvement over the first, thanks to the arrival of two strong characters, and the rapid shift away from a few story threads (mob war, Reyes' vendetta against the law firm) that never worked in the first place. But in others, it continued many of the problems I had through the first seven hours. It was still too cluttered and flabby, while Daredevil himself remained one of the least interesting parts of a show that bore his name. Also, the later episodes focused more on Elektra than Punisher,...

A funny thing happened on the way to the box office for Gods of Egypt, Lionsgate’s pricey fantasy about epic discord among ancient deities. A full three months ahead of release, both the studio and director Alex Proyas stood up and essentially apologized in advance for what audiences were going to see once the film opened. The motive for their mea culpa? Despite being set in ancient Egypt (which, yes, is in the continent of Africa), it had been cast, damn near top to bottom, with Australian, Swedish, English, and French actors.
This race-bending snafu, exemplifying Hollywood’s shameful epidemic of whitewashing smack-dab in the middle of a year laser-focused on the issue, turned into a headache so massive that Lionsgate decided its best course of action was to simply fess up to the (likely intentional, unquestionably tone-deaf) mistake and hope audiences would respect their candor enough not to boycott.

Deities wage war in the latest batch of TV spots for Gods of Egypt.
Due to hit theaters this coming weekend, today’s media dump is something of a last push for Lionsgate to drum up excitement for Alex Proyas’ (The Crow, Dark City) sword-and-sandals-and-fantasy epic, though even factoring in Gerard Butler’s larger-than-life performance as the relentless god of darkness, we remain unconvinced.
Falling into a similar camp as Warner’s bombastic Clash of the Titans – and its lowly sequel Wrath – the cinematic effects fuelling the ancient action are certainly easy on the eye. Still, it’s difficult to foresee a scenario where Proyas’ feature can rise above the scathing white-washing criticisms to make much of an impact at the box office.
Gods of Egypt makes its bow on Friday, February 26. Chadwick Boseman, Elodie Yung, Courtney Eaton and Geoffrey Rush round out the core cast.

After breaking out with the lovely, Oscar-winning Once, director John Carney found his Hollywood feature with Begin Again. Still keeping a relatively small scale, the drama, starring Mark Ruffalo and Keira Knightley, wasn’t as well-received as his break-out, but still managed to rack up over $60 million worldwide. This year, he’s returning to his roots with a musical titled Sing Street, set to premiere at Sundance next weekend.
Today brings the first trailer for The Weinstein Company release, which follows a group of kids in 1980s Dublin that attempt to be part of the music scene. Hopefully a return to more tender drama Carney once displayed, this could be one to see at the festival. Starring Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Lucy Boynton, Jack Reynor, Aidan Gillen, Mark McKenna, and more, check out the trailer below.

Young Adult novels tend to work best when they are metaphors for their readers’ lives. James Dashner’s Maze Runner trilogy certainly applied the zigs and zags of an adolescent’s development to that of a maze where the wrong turn can have devastating consequences. The books sold well and in the wake of The Hunger Games’ success, they were naturals for screen adaptation.
The first, 2014’s Maze Runner, was nowhere near as engaging with flat characters and a dumb, unsustainable society of teens. We were left with the gaggle of teens getting out from the maze and into its inner workings.
The Scorch Trials, out now oi Combo Pack from 20th Century Home Entertainment, immediately picks up from that moment as we trace the Gladers: Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), Minho (Ki Hong Lee), Teresa Agnes (Kaya Scodelario), Frypan (Dexter Darden) and Winston (Alexander Flores) as they go exploring unchartered territory.

On the heels of that interesting batch of character posters, the first trailer for Alex Proyas’ (The Crow, Wicked City, Knowing) mythological adventure flick, Gods Of Egypt, has been released.
This one looks like it might be fun, and it’s definitely not taking itself particularly seriously with its colourful array of costumes and larger than life (literally) characters – but while watching the footage, one cant help but be reminded of a certain Clash of the Titans remake from a few years back, and that didn’t turn out very well at all.
Still, there’s an impressive cast to look forward to: Game Of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau plays the noble God of Horus, who has his eyes torn out and is banished by the evil Set (Gerard Butler). With Set planning to plunge the mortal world into endless darkness (or something), Bek (Brenton Thwaites) undertakes a mission to stop him,...

The Gods of Egypt posters are out and we have them...viewer discretion is strongly advised...so are sunglasses...
Still curious? Ok well here they are! The character posters for Alex Proyas' Gods of Egypt! Yes, the same director who made I, Robot and The Crow seems to have found the color shader function in Photoshop and pushed it to the max. Enjoy.
The posters feature Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Horus, Gerard Butler as Set, Chadwick Boseman as Thoth, Elodie Yung as Hathor, and Brenton Thwaites as Bek. Put Sunglasses on Now.
If you've made it this far, you can no longer unsee what you have just witnessed. This isn't a knock on the movie, by any means. It could still be a good film. It's just unfortunate that these posters make it easier to stare at the sun than at these characters. Perhaps the synopsis will do a better...

The ABC reality hit has produced many off-screen relationships over its 21-season history, and this season is no different as Alek Skarlatos and his Switch-Up partner Emma Slater's surprising chemistry during their "sexy" had viewers fanning themselves...and rooting for the pair to start dating. The second in a trilogy based on the young adult science fiction series, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials picks up where the first one left off. The sequel gets Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and friends from point A to point B, that is, across the burnt desert landscape known as the “Scorch,” with a few detours and twists along the way. Although they have left the maze behind, there is still lots of running.
The second installment has relatively few plot points, which leaves lots of time for chases, pursued by the wicked forces of Wckd or the zombie-like Cranks. The chases and battles take place in a variety of devastated landscapes, each filled with imaginative FX obstacles. This second movie reportedly follows the second book fairly closely but this installment may be the weakest book of the three.

Before The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 arrives in November, here's another fix of dystopian sci-fi action based on a series of young adult novels. The methadone to Hunger Games' heroin, The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is the sequel to 2014's genuinely-not-bad The Maze Runner, which is itself also genuinely-not-bad.
This is despite there being no mazes, no trials and almost nothing getting scorched. Running, however... running it has by the marathon. With its young leads – Dylan O'Brien's Thomas, Thomas Brodie-Sangster's Newt, Ki Hong Lee's Minho and Kaya Scodelario's Teresa – hot footing it out of a maze in the last film, "The Gladers" (as they're called) are offered mere minutes of respite in a sinister medical facility before pegging it into the post-apocalyptic wasteland.
Director Wes Ball returns for the follow-up, delivering a slicker and more confident product, full of grander set-pieces and tougher themes. Beset...

One Crazy Thing is a romantic comedy about a daytime TV star who meets his dream girl but is faced with having to tell her about a leaked sex tape. Silver's documentary, meanwhile, considers the 'stand your ground' law in Florida, that saw a teenager shot for playing loud music.

★★☆☆☆ The cinematic spectre of the terrifying hoodie rears its head once again in Simon Blake's debut feature, Still (2014), which is in cinemas now. At its centre is a startling performance filled with conflict and nuance from the ever-excellent Aidan Gillen (best known for television's Game of Thrones), but it's the tug-of-war between atmospheric character drama and grim, outlandish thriller that dominates proceedings. On one hand Still is a moving and upsetting portrait of paternal grief; on the other is a battle with the foot soldiers of Broken Britain, who wage savage war for imagined slights on the streets of London. Admittedly, this is far from the nightmarish underpasses of something like Harry Brown (2009).

Still
Written and Directed by Simon Blake
UK, 2014
The subject of adolescent criminality is a hot button issue in Britain, playing on the fears generated by rampant urbanization and the generation gap. Cinema has addressed these fears in different ways; Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg riffed on the idea with Hot Fuzz and their friend Joe Cornish cast them as unlikely heroes in Attack the Block while Michael Caine‘s avenging war vet in Harry Brown takes it into the territory of elderly wish fulfilment. Writer/director Simon Blake uses the idea as the narrative and thematic force behind Still; a grim, well-acted yet slightly messy contemporary crime drama.
Set in and around North London, Still introduces Carver (Aidan Gillen) and his ex-wife Rachel (Amanda Mealing) putting flowers on the grave of their deceased teenaged son on the anniversary of his death. Carver has deeply rooted feelings of guilt about...
