Episodes 8 and 9 of Uncle Samsik are the most confusing of the set-ups to date. As we near the end of the series, Samsik’s complicated plans seem to be getting more convoluted so he can achieve his final goal, a democratic South Korea where everyone has three meals a day. In episodes 6 and 7, we learn about a planned coup d’état, and in the latest episodes, the show gives us a more elaborate picture of how this came about. Or rather, whose plan it was. Uncle Samsik is a fictional tale set in a tumultuous time in South Korea, a little after the Korean War. It’s a historical drama that tells the story of a man determined to make a change in the country and how he uses the government and military to do so. Starring Song Kang-Oh in the lead, the show is quite different from anything else in the K-drama scene.

Guy Ritchie’s inevitable graduation from London to Hollywood has had its moments – the rambunctious zip of the first Sherlock Holmes, the stylish homoeroticism of The Man from Uncle – but it soon felt as if the once electrifying film-maker had been swallowed up by the system. A middling Sherlock sequel, a pointless King Arthur non-starter and a soulless Aladdin remake seemed like enough to push not just fans away but Ritchie himself. He’s since found a happier medium, making films for a broad, commercial audience with easily marketable stars yet on, what seem like, his own terms, wrestling some control back from the money men.

There is no doubt that Windham Rotunda left an impactful legacy in WWE. Using the ring name Bray Wyatt, Rotunda created many memorable moments in the promotion. Sadly the world lost Windham last year, but his memory and his visions of creativity can be still felt today.
One of Windham’s creations was the character Uncle Howdy. Windham created the character for his younger brother Taylor Michael Rotunda who goes by the ring name Bo Dallas. There have been various Uncle Howdy teases popping up on both television and social media,
During the ending credits of the Bray Wyatt documentary that was released on Peacock a few weeks back, there was a hint of an Uncle Howdy return. A former member of the Wyatt family Erick Rowan had to cancel previously planned shows he was set to appear at.

“It is a pretty great crop of plays this year, several that have become big commercial hits,” declares Sam Eckmann about the many dramas and revivals in contention for nominations at the 77th Tony Awards. Sam and I met for the very first time this season to discuss the 15 productions eligible for nominations, reviewing our picks in seven of the 11 play categories. Watch our 2024 Tony Awards slugfest above.

Rihanna‘s songs have changed pop culture forever. That doesn’t mean she thinks all of them are great. She had mixed feelings about her first single, coating it to a nursery rhyme. One of the song’s writers said the tune would set her on the path to becoming pop culture royalty.
Rihanna wasn’t too impressed with 1 song when she heard it over the phone
“Pon de Replay” was co-written by Alisha Brooks, Vada Nobles, Carl Sturken, and Evan Rogers. It’s not one of the more sophisticated tunes in her catalog but it’s undeniably catchy. On top of that, artists rarely debut with their best work. During a 2020 interview with Vulture, Rogers revealed that Rihanna had misgivings about the track. “I played it for Rihanna over the phone,” he recalled. “She was like ‘Uncle Ev, it sounds like a nursery rhyme. I like it, but I don’t know.

Starz is heading down south with Uncle Clifford.
The Lionsgate-backed premium cable network has ordered Down in the Valley, a half-hour docuseries exploring the Deep South with P-Valley star Nicco Annan set to host. The six-episode series will launch at a date to be determined this year and explore the people, music, culture and stories of the South, per Starz, as the show will feature everything from strip clubs to sex workshops, rap performances and ancient hoodoo rituals.
The order for Down in the Valley arrives as P-Valley — from creator Katori Hall — has been off the air for nearly two years. Sources say production on P-Valley is expected to resume later this year, though the show is not expected to air in 2024.

Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender are familiar with the series’ complex characters, intricate storytelling, and powerful themes of redemption and self-discovery. One of the characters who enraptured viewers with her cunning intelligence and deadly skills was Azula, the powerful and ruthless Princess of the Fire Nation.
And, according to head writer Aaron Ehasz, Azula was supposed to embark on a redemption arc in the potential fourth season that has yet to come to fruition. Indeed, in April 2019, Ehasz shocked the fandom and gave them a glimpse of what could have been in the upcoming season. He therefore revealed on his personal Twitter that a fourth season of the show was once considered.

Eighties television was a land of new ideas that hadn’t been seen before. It was also a place where old tropes were made shiny and new with a modern sheen that intrigued audiences and would produce classics like the hospital drama St. Elsewhere and the crime drama Hill Street Blues.
It would be a humdinger of a decade within the genre of mystery and detectives. It would see the return of the iconic detective Mike Hammer in a new series and would also bring us the dramedy Moonlighting. We’d also be treated to one of the greatest performances of Sherlock Holmes ever with the amazing Jeremy Brett.
It would also bring us a female detective who, in a world filled with male counterparts, couldn’t catch a break until she made up her own male counterpart in a boss named Remington Steele. The rest, as they say, is history,...

In my first review for the slapstick chronicles of silly villager Ah Niu (Ye Feng) and his Big Uncle (Wang Sha), we unpack the terror of living in a city ravaged by progress, alongside the guilt of desiring to partake in its consumerist pleasures. We learn an unspoken ‘truth' that for Ah Niu, the childlike icon of innocence, to remain a good person, he must remain poor. Lo and behold, the third of “The Crazy Bumpkins” series: “Big Times for the Crazy Bumpkins” (1976), sees a bag of money and jewels accidentally falling into Ah Niu's lap, making him actually rich. After 2 iterations of largely repeated gags, John Lo Mar's moral reflections on life in the new city enters a new curve, coming to a head in “Crazy Bumpkins in Singapore” (1976). Though this narrative shift is likely practical, it also ironically reveals the films' contradiction, as a marketed Shaw Brothers' product criticizing consumerist culture.

Jenna Ortega is teasing the second season of Wednesday, saying that each episode will feel like a movie.
“I’ve received some scripts now for the second season, and we’re definitely leaning into a little bit more horror,” Ortega told Laverne Cox while being interviewed for E! on the Emmys red carpet. “It’s really, really exciting because all throughout the show [Wednesday] never really changes and that’s what’s wonderful about her.”
She continued, “There’s some really good one-liners and I think everything is bigger. It’s a lot more action-packed. I think each episode will probably feel a little bit more like a movie, which is nice.”
The second season of the Netflix series has moved filming locations to Ireland after filming the first season in Romania. Wednesday EP Steve Stark recently revealed that production for the series would begin in April.

Deadline reports that CBS has given a straight-to-series order to NCIS: Origins, a prequel series about young Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
The NCIS prequel comes from Mark Harmon, who played Gibbs on NCIS for nearly twenty years, and his son Sean Harmon, who actually played a younger Gibbs in a handful of episodes. NCIS writers-producers Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North are also developing the series. The prequel will be narrated by Mark Harmon and take place in 1991, years prior to the events of NCIS. Deadline’s description reads: “In the series, Gibbs starts his career as a newly minted special agent at the fledgling NCIS Camp Pendleton office where he forges his place on a gritty, ragtag team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks.” The search will soon be on for an actor to play the role of young Gibbs.

As a former teaching colleague was very fond of saying: “You can’t make a pie out of sh*t”.
He was wrong and right. You can technically make all manner of things – up to and including pies – out of sh*t, but in the end, put any amount of sh*t in a pie and what you’ll end up with is a sh*t pie. Ingredients matter, is the point. Just ask Gordon Ramsay, or Minny Jackson from The Help.
The ingredients in the below movies and TV shows are the opposite of shit. They’re grade A, top drawer, high quality constituent parts… I really wish I hadn’t started this ‘shit’ thing. Does anybody else feel a bit queasy. And off pies?
Any road, we salute the actors below for being particularly excellent at their jobs this year, in some similarly excellent films and shows. Top work,...

The Netflix streaming service had another major hit on its hands when the Addams Family series Wednesday made its debut back in November of 2022. Season 2 of that show is now gearing up to start filming in Ireland (the first season was filmed in Romania) in late April next year – and Bloomberg reports that Netflix is now considering making a spin-off based on another popular Addams Family character, Uncle Fester!
According to Bloomberg, an Uncle Fester spin-off would be the first step in Netflix building their own Addams Family franchise. “Before production begins on the second season (of Wednesday), the company has also started talking about another Addams Family program, one built around Uncle Fester. As with any TV show in development, there is no guarantee the Uncle Fester show will ever happen. As the 50th anniversary of hip-hop comes to a close, the Recording Academy has one last trick up its sleeve to honor the pillars of the culture.
The Academy joins forces with CBS for “A Grammy Salute to 50 Years of Hip-Hop,” an aural spectacular that’s as much an ode to the culture as it is a documentation of it. The special, filmed at Inglewood’s YouTube Theater on Nov, 8, features a laundry list of performers spanning both decades and regions. Just a sampling of the artists: Queen Latifah, Common, Public Enemy, Rakim, Doug E. Fresh, Mc Lyte, Rick Ross, Jeezy, Jermaine Dupri, Yg, Too Short, E-40, De La Soul,...

Beyoncé, as she sings in her 2013 track of the same name, has always seemed “flawless,” especially when she’s on stage. But early into “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé,” she sings a ballad with a competing title, “Flaws and All,” which here reads as something of a sign of what she’s trying to do with this project, which she also directs.
In “Renaissance,” Beyoncé wants to show the effort that goes into her existence — both in arenas and outside of them. She wants to show the machinery of the tour mechanism, explaining that the most expensive part of the set was all the steel to support the stage design and highlighting the crew building the massive screens behind her. She wants to highlight the complicated act of mothering as a superstar, and she wants to demonstrate how her body, which has always seemed to support her in extraordinary ways,...

Actor Johnny Depp dove headfirst into the character of Willy Wonka in the 2005 film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and he got his inspiration from watching children’s TV shows.
Depp’s interpretation of Willy Wonka was almost childlike, with some people comparing him to the persona Michael Jackson displayed. Depp, who often embraced character acting, said in this instance, he wanted to model Willy Wonka after someone who spoke to children in somewhat of a “musical” way.
“On this film with Willy Wonka there wasn’t specifically any one or two guys that were models, so to speak, for the character, but there were memories that I have of when I was a little kid of watching children’s shows and children show hosts,” he told IGN.
“And I distinctly remember, even at that age, their speech pattern and their kind of musical quality of the way they’re speaking to the camera,...

David McCallum, the man who brought the sexy to NBC's swinging 1960s superspy series "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." and enjoyed an unexpected career resurgence via CBS' long-running procedural "NCIS," has, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, passed away of natural causes at the age of 90.
Although his character Illya Kuryakin was a Russian agent in "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.," the Scottish McCallum imbued the show with a British Mod-era cool that mashed up Sean Connery's finely tailored James Bond with the youthful insouciance of The Beatles. This wasn't by design. "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." was conceived as a vehicle for Robert Vaughn, but it's impossible to imagine the show gaining global traction with his cucumber-cool (occasionally frigid) American agent Napoleon Solo. To be sure, Vaughn had "it." He got the best character arc in John Sturges' "The Magnificent Seven," and died a hero's death.

If you go by the title, which comes from the name of a New Jersey record store, and you look at the main photo, which pictures the outside of that store, you might think that you know what the documentary “Flipside” is.
But within the first 20 minutes of the film, which opened on Sunday at the Toronto International Film Festival, you will have heard about an aging jazz photographer, the Columbia Record Club, “This American Life” and Judd Apatow’s “Funny People.” And you’ll know that this is not the movie you thought it would be.
Instead, Chris Wilcha’s “Flipside” is a doc assembled out of loose ends and false starts, a jumble that can be maddening until suddenly it’s moving, thanks at least partly to David Bowie. It’s confounding and self-centered but damn it if it doesn’t work.

As ridiculous as “The Righteous Gemstones” Uncle Baby Billy may be, in Season 3 he’s enacting a lifelong goal for series star Walton Goggins: hosting a game show.
“It’s always been a dream of mine, to be quite honest with you, to have that that experience and to say like an opening monologue in front of an audience,” Goggins told TheWrap. In Season 3’s “For Their Nakedness Is Your Own Nakedness,” Uncle Baby Billy stumbles into his latest scheme, which involves hosting a game show called “Baby Billy’s Bible Bonkers.” As his family repeatedly points out, it’s exactly like “Family Feud,” expect it’s about the Bible.
“Of course leave it to baby Billy to watch an episode of ‘Family Feud’ and present this idea as if it’s his own only with a different subject matter,” Goggins said. “It’s just it’s so fun.

Morfydd Clark of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Saint Maud has signed on to join Eddie Marsan (Happy-Go-Lucky) and Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù (His House) in the cast of the revenge thriller Uncle, Deadline reports.
Joe Marcantonio will be directing Uncle from a screenplay he crafted with Owynne Dawkins. Their story has the following synopsis: After the brutal murder of their family, barely teenage Millie and her Uncle John (Dìrísù) embark on a brutal mission of revenge and retribution. But as they get closer to the people responsible, Millie must decide if she is ready to follow the bloody path of vengeance… and its violent, premature journey into adulthood.
Details on the characters Clark and Marsan will be playing have not been revealed. We also don’t know who will be playing the Millie character, which sounds like it will be a great role for a young actor.

Contains spoilers for "Fast X"
It's clear with each new addition in the "Fast and Furious" franchise that these movies are about family, not physics. What began as "Point Break" with cars has evolved into the ever-more-ridiculous exploits of a super spy team stacked with heroes — and villains and villains turned heroes. From racing the streets with the all-powerful Nos to racing into space, this saga left plausibility in their rearview many moons ago. Luckily, for the most part, the movies are held together thanks to the chemistry of the "Fast Family" and action sequences so knowingly bonkers the audience feels in on the joke. As Mark Kennedy summed up in his review for The Associated Press, "Fast X" is pure popcorn lunacy."
After "F9: The Fast Saga" showcased the possibly too-silly adventures of Tej (Ludacris) and Roman (Tyrese Gibson) in space and a climax with a super magnet that...

While Southeast Asian films have premiered at the Cannes Film Festival many times before, and even won the Palme d’Or, there’s an energy around the region this year that we haven’t felt on the Croisette at previous editions.
Tiger Stripes, a body horror from Malaysian filmmaker Amanda Nell Eu, about a young Muslim girl going through extreme puberty, premieres Wednesday in Critics Week, while Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell, from Pham Thien An, a young director who is at the forefront of a new wave of Vietnamese filmmakers, has been selected for Directors’ Fortnight.
Singaporean director Anthony Chen – who won the Camera d’Or in 2013 for his debut Ilo Ilo – is back in Cannes with a mainland Chinese production The Breaking Ice, which is premiering in Un Certain Regard this weekend. He is also producing an ambitious slate of Southeast Asian and international films through his Singapore-based Giraffe Pictures.

The Film Independent Screenwriting Lab is 25 years old. Can you believe it? It’s officially old enough to rent a car! And sure, hardshell clams and giant tortoises can live for centuries, but you don’t reach the quarter-century mark as a Hollywood talent incubator without substance, value and tangible success.
But more than that, this year’s cohort of freshly announced Screenwriting Lab Fellows are special. Why? Because! We’re in the midst of celebrating #AD30, aka the 30th anniversary of Film Independent’s Artist Development programs. And like its elder sibling Project Involve (which got the whole ball of wax rolling in ‘93), the Screenwriting Lab has been an essential industry resource, whether your looking to develop your own skills or tap new talent.
“We’re thrilled to support this exceptional group of filmmakers, who bring compassion, authenticity and curiosity to their work exploring unique communities and characters,” says Dea Vazquez,...
