Henry Cavill‘s best role is not his iconic turn as Dceu’s Superman or for playing The Witcher’s Geralt of Rivia. These are mainstream roles that that helped the actor gain international recognition. However, there’s one film that you might have missed, which can be argued is Cavill’s best work to date. Sand Castle is a 2017 war drama film that quietly impressed critics and audiences alike with its gripping and emotional storytelling. In Sand Castle, Cavill plays Captain Syverson, a veteran soldier tasked with leading a group of young soldiers in the dangerous terrain of war-torn Iraq. As he and...

This post contains major spoilers for "Knock at the Cabin."
After adapting Pierre Oscar Lévy and Frederik Peeters' graphic novel "Sandcastle" into his rapid-aging horror movie "Old," filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan has returned to take another devastatingly bleak tale and shine a little sun on it with a change to the ending. "Knock at the Cabin," based on Paul G. Tremblay's novel "Cabin at the End of the World," stars Jonathan Groff and Ben Aldridge as Daddy Eric and Daddy Andrew, respectively -- a gay couple who adopted their daughter, Wen (Kristen Cui), from a Chinese orphanage when she was a baby.
Now a tightly-knit family unit, they go on the ultimate getaway vacation to a cabin by a lake, two miles from the nearest neighbor and even farther from reliable cell service. But Eric, Andrew, and Wen's bubble of happiness gets popped when four strangers, armed with sinister homemade weapons,...

Spoilers ahead for "Knock at the Cabin" and Paul G. Tremblay's original novel, "The Cabin at the End of the World."
Though he's far from batting a thousand with original screenplays, M. Night Shyamalan's first attempt at adapting pre-existing source material — "The Last Airbender" — was famously his greatest disaster. As the only credited writer on his initial eight films, Shyamalan's failed blockbuster for Nickelodeon would become his first and only adaptation until 2021's "Old."
Now, after closing out his unsatisfying "Unbreakable" trilogy — Shyamalan's only multi-movie franchise, which sprung entirely from his own head — the writer-director is entering a phase of his career where adaptations are a new normal. His latest, "Knock at the Cabin," is based on the 2018 novel "The Cabin at the End of the World" by Massachusetts-based author and two-time winner of the Bram Stoker Award, Paul G. Tremblay.

The following post contains spoilers for nine M. Night Shyamalan movies, including "Knock at the Cabin."
Many casual fans don't know this, but "The Sixth Sense" wasn't M. Night Shyamalan's first feature film. It was his third, after "Praying with Anger" and "Wide Awake," but it defined his reputation as a maker of eerily quiet, slow-paced thrillers with a "Twilight Zone" vibe and (usually) big twists at the end. Initially, this formula was so successful that some began referring to Shyamalan in the same sentence as Steven Spielberg, but then he took some bigger swings — without the twists — and things didn't work out so well. So, after being humbled by big-budget disappointments like "The Last Airbender" and "After Earth," Shyamalan went back to basics, making films with lower budgets, more suspenseful plots, and yes, big twists. Of late, he's taken to adapting books and actually changing the endings, surprising readers...

M. Night Shyamalan’s name became somewhat of a punching bag after movies, such as The Happening and The Last Airbender. However, he most recently took us on a thrilling trip to a mysterious beach in Old based on Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters’ graphic novel, Sandcastle. Next, Shyamalan raised the stakes to potentially apocalyptic levels with Knock at the Cabin.

Say what you will about M. Night Shyamalan, but only he would make an alien invasion movie that largely takes place on a farm or a superhero film mostly set in a psychiatric hospital. Now, the one-of-a-kind filmmaker is back with another genre thriller featuring an unusually contained setting, this time in the form of "Knock at the Cabin."
Adapted from Paul G. Tremblay's 2018 novel "The Cabin at the End of the World," Shyamalan's latest follows a couple (Ben Aldridge and Jonathan Groff) and their young daughter (Kristen Cui) on what's meant to be a relaxing vacation to a remote forest cabin. Of course, this being an M. Night joint, their would-be relaxing getaway quickly turns into a nightmare when they're taken hostage by four mysterious strangers. The group's leader Leonard -- played by a soft-spoken Dave Bautista -- then explains to the trio what's going on: Either they willingly...

This past father’s day, M. Night Shyamalan posted a picture that gave a little insight into how his next movie Old, came to be. According to M Night, his three daughters gave him the graphic novel Sand Castle as a fathers day present a few years back, and the director loved the story so much, he decided to make it into a film. Old will be Shyamalan’s first feature film since 2019s, “Glass.” M Night’s latest film was filmed in the Dominican Republic during Covid-19. The film will star Alex Wolff, Vicky Krieps, Eliza Scanlen, Gael Garcia Bernal, and Thomasin McKenzie. Old will be released in theaters on July 23rd. After watching the trailer, I’m super excited to see what the Sixth Sense and Signs director has in store for fans. At the Tribeca Film Festival, M Night told The Hollywood Reporter, “No one has ever...

Exclusive: Treehouse Pictures has set in motion what it’s describing as a diverse remake of 1991 coming-of-age comedy, Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, which is being written by Chuck Hayward with Bille Woodruff attached to direct. Hayward’s take is a present-day retelling centered on a black family.
Treehouse’s Justin Nappi and Juliet Berman are producing along with Oren Segal. Executive producers are Michael Phillips — also an Ep on the original — Juliana Maio and Tova Laiter.
The 1991 film, which was directed by Stephen Herek, starred Christina Applegate, Joanna Cassidy and Josh Charles. It follows Sue Ellen Crandell, a teenager who is forced to take charge of her four younger siblings when their mom leaves town and the wicked babysitter her mother hired suddenly dies. Despite the fact that the film wasn’t a huge success critically or commercially, it amassed a significant cult following.

For his directorial debut, Danny Strong wanted to get a little more personal. The multi-hyphenate is known for his work on both sides of the camera, from acting in small screen fare like “Gilmore Girls” and “Mad Men,” to scripting features like “Game Change” (the HBO movie that earned him two Emmys), “Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” and the final pair of “Hunger Games” films, in addition to creating a little show called “Empire,” but when it came time to direct, Strong sought out something closer to his own experience. A biopic of J.D. Salinger fit the bill.
But when Strong’s “Rebel in the Rye” premiered at Sundance earlier this year, the fact-based feature wasn’t a universal crowdpleaser. Fortunately, that’s not the movie audiences will see when it opens in September, and Strong is hopeful that the new version speaks more clearly to his original intentions when it came to telling the story.

It’s all based on Michael Hastings’ non-fiction “The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan,” an exposé that “questions” General Stanley McChrystal’s 2010 shot-calling. The names may have changed from page to screen, but the message is retained. When invading a foreign land, how is one supposed to broker peace? It’s a confused tactic; one that blurs the rules of war. Good thing a colorful cast of jarheads are there to “make sense” of it all.

Doug Liman’s The Wall faces the same problem as Netflix’s Sand Castle – is there anything left unsaid about an already mass-criticized Iraq invasion? We’ve heard it all. Government debriefings, conspiracy theories, oil-slick motivations. At this point – almost a decade after occupancy began to wind down – what more is there to exploit? Not much, which is why writer Dwain Worrell draws up this cat-and-mouse sniper battle like a modern-times Enemy At The Gates. One location, sun-soaked tension and a maniac shooter with his sights locked on American troopers. Imagine Jonás Cuarón’s Desierto, except instead of Jeffrey Dean Morgan hunting Mexican border crossers, a Middle Eastern man takes exception to the flag-waving “invaders” who just want to “help.”

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Antichrist (Lars von Trier)
Like the majority of Lars von Trier films, from the first moments of Antichrist, one will be able to discern if it’s an experience they want to proceed with. For those will to endure its specific unpleasantness, there’s a poetic, affecting exploration of despair at its center. Chaos reigns, indeed. – Jordan R.

Similar to lead character Pvt. Matt Ocre (Nicholas Hoult), screenwriter Chris Roessner joined the United States Army in July of 2001 to serve in the Reserves and earn college money. Two months later 9/11 changed everything. Suddenly he was thrust into a full-scale war in the Middle East and he needed to steel himself to that fact. He wasn’t in the Special Forces, Navy SEALs or Marines — he was just a soldier walking onto the frontlines like the rest. His story wasn’t one of unanimous heroics wherein he proved crucial to earning that “Mission Accomplished” banner everyone remembers as empty sentiment. Like so many military men and women, he entered Iraq at the beginning of something still unfinished today and left well before any true strides were made.
Roessner survived his stint and returned home with journals and photos depicting his experience. He took that money and enrolled in USC’s film school,...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
Will This April Dump Weekend See Any New Movie Open Over $10 Million?
After the decent opening of last week’s The Fate of the Furious--though not quite as much as I predicted--it’s going to be hard for any new movie to make a mark against its second weekend even if it drops 55% or more this weekend, which is very likely.
Probably the best bet to make money this weekend is the thriller Unforgettable (Warner Bros.), which pits Kathryn Heigl against Rosario Dawson and is the directorial debut by producer Denise Di Novi (Crazy, Stupid, Love). It also stars Geoff Stults as the ex-husband of Heigl’s character Tessa, who becomes engaged to Dawson’s Julia, making her the stepmom to the former’s daughter,...

Fernando Coimbra’s Sand Castle is an Iraq war story that takes aim at Us involvement. Chris Roessner’s screenplay accidentally destroys a small town’s water supply, then sends Army infantrymen in to clean up an American-made mess. We break it, we buy it – but what’s the cost of us even being there? Middle Eastern natives shoot holes in friendly tankers that only want to fix an unfortunate mistake, or refuse to help military-grade contractors because a partnership with white devils means death. The futility of war put on display, anyone? It’s not exactly the first time our Iraq occupancy has been called into question, which begs a simple question – why now, Netflix? Is this wartime drama too little, too repetitive and too late?

Nicholas Hoult is getting pretty good at playing War Boys, though in Netflix’s war drama “Sand Castle,” there’s more introspection and less flame-throwing guitars than anything we saw in “Mad Max: Fury Road.”
Set in Iraq in 2003, the film follows a group of American soldiers during the early days of the second Gulf War. They are sent to the outskirts of Baqubah to repair a water pumping station that was damaged by U.S. bombs. The soldiers soon learn that winning the hearts and mind of the angry and resentful locals is a task fraught with danger.

You could call it the “Netflix effect.” With the rise of the global VOD giant and its increasingly voracious appetite for nonfiction films, the documentary industry is anticipating a busy spring season at the Tribeca Film Festival and Hot Docs, North America’s largest documentary festival and marketplace.
But it’s not just Netflix, say industry insiders. The number of active buyers for documentary films suggests there’s an enthusiasm for independent nonfiction cinema that goes beyond the VOD giant.
On the eve of Tribeca, three high-profile documentaries have already found buyers: National Geographic acquired the coal-mining expose “From the Ashes,” and Gravitas Ventures bought theatrical and streaming rights to two films already partnering with CNN Films: “Elian,” the story of Cuban child émigré Elian Gonzalez, and Impact Partners’ “The Reagan Show,” a freshly relevant archival-driven doc about the staging of the former President.

The most interesting thing about the Netflix exclusive Sand Castle is probably how much of an Iraq War movie it is, in the sense that, like any truly middling example of a genre, it involuntarily bares the genre’s tropes. It’s a stale, phony, grunt-level sort of view of American intervention, cast in large part with Brits and shot in the familiar desert backlots of Jordan, which has stood in for the site of one Middle Eastern conflict after another since Lawrence Of Arabia. Within its unremarkable mise-en-scène, one finds Humvees, makeshift plywood walls, and defaced Ba’athist palaces where dirt-seamed American soldiers lounge on showroom-style furniture—all those things that made the Iraq War, like all widely televised conflicts, into a subgenre of war story before anyone had a chance to write about it in fiction or memoir. It’s that paradigm shift of war in the buzzing...

Please allow a moment of silence for “Tramps,” Adam Leon’s warm and winsome follow-up to SXSW 2013 winner “Gimme the Loot.” Anchored by a ridiculously charismatic performance from actress Grace Van Patten, Leon’s sweltering, casually modern riff on classic Hollywood comedies like “It Happened One Night” tells the story of two kids who fall in love during a wild goose chase around the outer edges of New York City. It’s delightful stuff, diverting by design but told with the confidence of someone who can endow even the lightest fare with a real sense of weight. It was hardly the most significant thing I saw at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, but watching it on a hot summer day with the lights off and the AC on full blast was one of the most purely enjoyable experiences I had there.

You time is valuable, and so are both services for different reasons.War Machine (Netflix)
Although there may be a competition going on between Amazon and Netflix for subscribers, the truth is that both company’s streaming services are essential for anyone who watches a lot of movies and TV and who wants to be part of the pop culture conversations as they happen.
There’s no denying that Amazon Prime is worth the $99/year, which not only gives you access to many movies but also a good amount of music streaming and digital media access, plus faster shipping for when you actually want some sort of physical product (you can also just get video content for $8.99/month, which oddly means paying more for less).
And Netflix is still a must-have for both its exclusive and nonexclusive content, though depending on one’s usage could be best for sporadic membership rather than continued subscription — now at $120/year...

Man of Steel and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. star Henry Cavill will be teaming up with Tom Cruise in Paramount Pictures' Mission: Impossible 6. According to Variety, "Cavill would play some sort of a right hand to the head of Cruise’s unit." Cavill seems like a great fit for the franchise as he's got that suave 007 spy vibe to him. I enjoyed the character he played in The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
There are no details about the story for the next installment of the franchise, but McQuarrie previously said that he wants to focus on the character Ethan Hunt and who he is, promising a very different version of the character than what we've seen. He explains:

As if the cast of David Raymond’s psychological thriller Nomis wasn’t enviable enough, The Hollywood Reporter brings word today of some new recruits.
With Henry Cavill (Sand Castle), Ben Kingsley and Baywatch star Alexandra Daddario already locked in, THR has confirmed that Stanley Tucci, Nathan Fillion and Minka Kelly have all climbed on board alongside fellow newcomers Brendan Fletcher and Mpho Koaho. Little is currently known about how each of their respective characters factor into the storyline, but we understand David Raymond’s genre movie centers on “an American police force that traps an online predator, only to realize the depth of his crimes goes far beyond anything anticipated.” The Zodiac Killer for a digital age? Color us intrigued.

Following the release of images from the film, Netflix have debuted the first trailer for war drama Sand Castle, which stars Nicholas Hoult, Henry Cavill, Logan Marshall-Green, Glen Powell, Beau Knapp, and Neil Brown Jr. From a powerful and personal script by screenwriter Chris Roessner who was inspired by his experiences in Iraq, Sand Castle is a depiction of the Second Gulf War told through the eyes of a group of American soldiers on the front lines.

"No one outside that gate wants you here... So do your job." Netflix has debuted an official trailer for an Iraq war drama titled Sand Castle, from the Brazilian director who last made the cult hit A Wolf at the Door previously. Set in Iraq in 2003 at the very beginning of the Iraq war, the film follows a couple of Us soldiers trying to protect a small village that's under attack. The film stars Nicholas Hoult, Henry Cavill, Glen Powell, Logan Marshall-Green, Beau Knapp, Neil Brown Jr., Parker Sawyers, Sam Spruell, Sammy Sheik, and Tommy Flanagan. I'm surprised to see yet another new Gulf War movie, especially with this kind of impressive ensemble cast, considering they seem to be a dime a dozen nowadays.
