If there’s a quintessential Easter horror movie to watch this week, it’s Critters 2. Writer/directors David Charbonier and Justin Powell follow up their tale of the all too real horrors of human trafficking, The Boy Behind the Door, with another tale of a young boy forced to fight for his life. In The Djinn the threat is a supernatural one.
After the death of his mother (Tevy Poe; Redwood Massacre: Annihilation) Dylan a mute twelve year old and his radio DJ father Michael relocate to a new home. One that, in true horror movie fashion, the previous occupant died in.
While looking around his new home he, again in keeping with genre traditions, finds a copy of The Book of Shadows which contains a spell to conjure a Djinn (John Erickson) that will grant him his fondest wish, to be able to speak. The...

Batman: The Long Halloween, Part Two picks up almost immediately after the teaser at the end of Part One. Bruce Wayne is under the spell of Poison Ivy and Batman nowhere to be found. At least until Catwoman intervenes.
But even as he’s recovering from three months under her influence other problems are plaguing a crime ravaged Gotham City. District Attorney Harvey Dent is being pushed to the edge by his job and the toll it’s taking on his marriage. And the continuing spree of The Holiday Killer has pushed Carmine Falcone to make some dangerous alliances with the likes of Poison Ivy and The Mad Hatter (John Dimaggio). That does not sit well with his daughter Sofia.

Naya Rivera and Jessica Walter were notably missing from the in memoriam portion of the 93rd Academy Awards ceremony, a snub that angered fans of the beloved late actresses.

Rivera was perhaps best known for her work on Glee, but the actress also had film roles, including in Mad Families and At the Devil’s Door. Rivera died July 8, 2020, at Lake Piru, near Santa ...

Ghost Protocol: Vitthal Gets Supernatural with Hot Topic Horror
Genre has always been a formidable platform to explore significant social ills in creative ways, often sidestepping the heavy-handedness of tragedy or melodrama. Such is the aim of director Malik Vitthal’s sophomore film, Body Cam a horror thriller headlined by the Queen of Hip Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige. Six years after his 2014 debut Imperial Dreams, Vitthal teams with scribes Richmond Riedel and Nicholas McCarthy, the latter a director of a number of similar supernatural indie films (The Pact; At the Devil’s Door) for a jam-packed portrait of retribution which plays with so many tangents and elements the film often feels as if it bit off more than it could chew.…...

*full disclosure: an Blu-ray screener of this film was provided by IFC Films. **there are spoilers here. Director/writer: Nicholas McCarthy. Cast: Catalina Sandino Moreno, Naya Rivera, Ashley Rickards and Mark Steger. At the Devil's Door is the first film of the year to send real chills up this viewer's spine. Director and writer Nicholas McCarthy (The Pact) delivers another memorable and frightening tale. The film's central plot involves the birth of the Devil. This plot device has been used before in films like Rosemary's Baby (1968), The Devil's Due (2014) and many others. Here, McCarthy offers his own unique vision on the subject, which is most effectively delivered through the film's sound design. Horrifying visuals are minimized, while unsettling sounds and music are maximized, to terrifying effect. Well shot, At the Devil's Door is a truly horrifying viewing experience. In the story, Hannah (Ashley Rickards), unwittingly, makes a deal with the Devil.

When The Pact dropped two years ago, it quietly snuck onto the scene and surprised everyone with how smartly written and genuinely creepy it was. It seems that with losing its connection with writer-director Nicholas McCarthy (who has gone on to direct this year's At the Devil's Door), The Pact 2pulls some punches and just can’t get the scares that the first one delivered.
The sequel, written and directed by Dallas Richard Hallam and Patrick Horvath (the duo who directed Entrance), tells the story of June and her boyfriend Daniel. Both are involved with law enforcement, Daniel is a beat cop who works nights and June cleans up crime scenes.

A teenage girl in love with a teenage boy plays a cryptic game. A twenty-something woman goes about her rounds as a real estate agent in a depressed market, then visits her younger sister, a depressed artist. These three women play key roles in At the Devil's Door, a quiet horror film with a welcome touch of the creepy crazies. Writer/director Nicholas McCarthy, who made his directorial debut with The Pact, is still not interested in holding hands with the audience, as far as creating signposts to make it easy to follow the narrative initially. Whereas his earliest effort held little tension or suspense for me when I saw it in 2012, however, he paints with a larger palette in At the Devil's Door, with...
