Parker refers to the ruby throated hummingbird he took a picture of as "her" and "she". All species of hummingbirds exhibit sexual dimorphism, the males are brightly colored in order to attract a mate, and help distract predators, the male ruby throat has bright red feathers on his throat, which is obviously where their name comes from. The females however have subdued coloring, they have some green on their back, as do the males, but their throat is a tan/white color, this helps them to better blend into brush and shrubbery when in their nest. As a self proclaimed amateur ornithologist Parker should know all of this, that hummingbird in his garden is a male.
