When developing her on-screen friendship with co-star Christa Miller, “Shrinking” star Jessica Williams said she positioned it as if they were hanging out “like a ‘Real Housewife of Pasadena.’”
In other words, she approached the relationship between her character, Gaby, and and Miller’s character, Liz, through the lens of her fascination with reality TV and obsession with the “Real Housewives” franchise. In this episode of Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast, Williams and Miller share how that TV friendship has developed into a real-life, off-screen one as well.
In separate interviews, Williams and Miller discussed the dynamic of their characters’ evolving personalities and what they hope for the second season. Listen below!
“Shrinking” focuses on therapist Jimmy Laird (Jason Segel) and his daughter Alice (Lukita Maxwell), after the loss of their matriarch, Tia (Lilan Bowden). The half-hour comedy chronicles as the therapist develops a much more hands-on approach with his...

Gillian Jacobs and Wood Harris have both joined HBO’s upcoming drama series about the Los Angeles Lakers, Variety has learned.
The untitled series was ordered at HBO in December 2019. It is described as chronicling the professional and personal lives of the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers, one of sports’ most revered and dominant dynasties, in what came to be called the Showtime Era.
Jacobs will appear as Chris Riley. Her husband Pat (Adrien Brody) might be the one wearing the whistle, but Chris Riley is the one with a plan. Therapist by trade, Chris Riley uses her emotional expertise and strategic genius to shape the Lakers into champions.
Harris will appear as Spencer Haywood. In 1970, Spencer Haywood took the NBA to the Supreme Court, winning the right to join the league before graduating college, therefore paving the way for future greats like Lebron James and Kobe Bryant. But the groundbreaking...

Would you believe that Adam Scott and Craig Robinson have never worked together before? That seems like an impossible fact, because it's not true. They were both in the classic film Hot Tub Time Machine 2, but not even that piece of high art could prepare us for the bromance at the center of Ghosted, between two guys who have never met before and have little in common...at first. The Fox series, which premieres this Sunday, tells the tale of two random dudes—Leroy (Robinson), a skeptical and very skilled former real cop and current mall cop who accidentally got his old partner killed, and Max (Scott), a book store employee and disgraced Harvard professor who lost his wife to an...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Stereotypes and contrived shenanigans don’t seem to actually offer much catharsis for harried moms seeking escape. And the dads inevitably butt into their me-time. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for stories about women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Fun? Nope, not for us. Dinner? Mostly offscreen. Moms? Check… though even here, in a movie allegedly devoted to mom time, they have to share the spotlight with dads. Wtf?
Fun Mom Dinner (the title sounds like a Japanglish attempt to sound cool) starts off promising enough, with Toni Collette’s (Krampus, Miss You Already) Kate complaining about how child-focused the interactions of so many women can be — “I’m mommed out,” she sighs, with a refreshing lack of reverence for motherhood, something that cinema is sorely lacking — and with Katie Aselton’s (The Gift,...

Adam Scott and Craig Robinson, of Fox’s new comedy Ghosted, already seem like a match made in sitcom heaven — but it isn’t the first time that the former Parks and Rec and Office employees have appeared on screen together.
“We knew each other from Hot Tub Time Machine 2,” Robinson reminds Michael Ausiello during a sit-down at TVLine’s Comic-Con interview suite, to which Scott deadpans, “You’re welcome.” All jokes aside, Scott is eager for people to see Ghosted, which he says harkens back to classic 1980s buddy comedies such as Beverly Hills Cop and Ghostbusters. Starring Craig Robinson and Adam Scott, the paranormal comedy scripted project Ghosted has received a pilot episode order from Fox.
Variety reports the news of the pilot pickup of Ghosted, which is described as The X-Files with a funny slant.
According to Variety, the show “follows a cynical skeptic (Robinson) and a genius ‘true believer’ in the paranormal (Scott) who are recruited by The Bureau Underground to look into the rampant ‘unexplained’ activity in Los Angeles, all while uncovering a larger mystery that could threaten the existence of the human race.”
In addition to starring in the single-camera show, Scott and Robinson will executive produce the project with Naomi Scott, Oly Obst, Mark Schulman and Tom Gormican, the lattermost of whom wrote the pilot episode. Also executive producing and set to be the showrunner is Kevin Etten (Workaholics).

1. CosmosAdam Maida’s silent scream for Andrzej Zulawski’s swansong Cosmos is a poster that cries out to be noticed. Channeling the starkest of Polish poster design—think Mieczyslaw Wasilewski or Andrzej Pagowski—Maida’s design is as deceptively crude as it is beautifully executed. I love everything about this poster, down to its hand-lettering, that tiny hanged bird and the even tinier—nice if you can get away with it—billing block. Maida’s witty, diagrammatic work has already graced Criterion covers for Nagisa Oshima’s Death by Hanging, John Frankenheimer’s The Manchurian Candidate, and Costa-Gavras’s The Confession and State of Siege, but it is his eye-catching black-and-white editorial illustration/montages for the New York Times that this most reminds me of. You can see more of his work here.2. The HandmaidenTrees and a hanging also feature heavily in my second favorite poster of the year: an...

I’m “biast” (con): not a fan of grossout comedies
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
You know those really dumb comedies where the only actually funny bits are the outtakes that run over the end credits, where everyone is finally on their game and the humor comes loose and fast and unconstructed, and you think, “Gee, why isn’t the whole movie like that?”? This is not the case with Office Christmas Party. Ocp — not to be confused with the evil robotics corporation in Robocop, which is more fun on a Friday after-work drinks thing than this movie — is, if I recall correctly, the first instance of end-credits clips that are as precisely forced and flat as...

The few Hollywood films to represent Lgbt characters in 2015 did so in damaging and dangerous ways, according to a new report released Monday by GLAAD. Only 17.5 percent of major movie releases were found inclusive by the media watchdog, and characters drawn in films like “Get Hard” and “Hot Tub Time Machine 2” were labeled stereotypes that won laughs from “gay panic” — or scenarios in which straight characters are distressed by social or sexual situations involving Lgbt people. “Leaving Lgbt people out of the picture — or including them only as a punchline — keeps old prejudices alive and creates an unsafe...

It was a running joke among Italian exploitation filmmakers in the 70s and 80s that if you wanted to know what your next film was going to be, you only had to look at Hollywood’s box office. While Hollywood made The Exorcist, Jaws and Star Wars, Italy made Beyond The Door, Tentacles and Starcrash.
Jump forward a few decades and Hollywood appears to be the new Italy, relentlessly ripping off its own back catalogue. The problem is, the Italians did it so much more entertainingly.
It’s just as well that the makers of the Poltergeist remake kept the title of Tobe Hooper’s 1982 film – without it, you’d have thought you were watching a third-rate knock off of Insidious (2010).
Elsewhere, the reboot of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. was just like the TV series – a so-so spy caper that didn’t have the budget to compete with James Bond.

Going strong for 36 years, the Razzie Awards once again highlighted the worst projects and poorest talent in the entertainment industry with the announcement of the 2016 winners.
And not entirely surprising, there were actually two films to take home the Worst Picture honor- “Fantastic Four” and “Fifty Shades of Grey.”
Along the same lines, “Fifty Shades” costars Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson received the Worst Actor and Worst Actress titles, respectively.

Yeah, yeah, the Oscars were last night, congratulations to Leonardo DiCaprio and Spotlight and all, celebration of quality filmmaking, whatever. Let's look at the winners of what really matters: the Razzies! As is tradition, the Razzie winners were announced the night before the Oscar ceremony. No big surprises here: Fifty Shades of Grey took home most of the "prizes" though Fantastic Four took home a few big ones as well. Both movies tied for Worst Picture. And while Eddie Redmayne may have lost out on the Oscar to DiCaprio, he did get a Razzie for Worst Supporting Actor for Jupiter Ascending. Congratulations, Eddie! It has come to full circle for Sylvester Stallone. The perennial Razzie awardee has just been redeemed! The Oscar frontrunner for Best Supporting Actor (see my full Oscar predictions here) won the Razzie Redeemer Award at the 2016 Golden Raspberry Award. It's all good now Mr. Stallone!
Meanwhile, both "Fantastic Four" and "Fifty Shades of Grey" took home the worst of the worst -- the Worst Picture of the year! They were both so bad that they had to share this dishonor!

While we wait to see who wins at the 88th annual Academy Awards tonight, The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation has announced the winners for the 36th Razzie Awards. The Razzie Awards have actually managed to stake their claim on a part of the film world now, with their yearly release not going unnoticed by anyone, and this despite the fact that you too can vote for them, as long as you buy in.
This year was bound to be dominated by the biggest winners, because no movie managed more universal hatred than Fifty Shades of Grey (and those who hated it weren’t always waiting for the release), unless it was Fantastic Four and it’s director outrage kurfuffle (he managed his own award as well).
Many of the other awards were largely foregone conclusions as well, mainly because Kevin James, Adam Sandler, and The Chipmunks made movies… or whatever.
Still, worst movies and performances make for tricky voting. It’s hard to pick among the nominees sometimes, which explains the dual win for overall worst picture, but...

While Hollywood is getting ready to celebrate itself with the Oscars, we must not forgot those films that were absolutely shite. Thankfully for the 36th year in a row The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation has shined a light on the best of the worst announcing the winners for the Razzie Awards 2016.

The bend/break rules of comedic malleability are well established, but do not forget the dictum that schtick barely expands. If cinema has taught us anything, it’s that there's nearly a zero-tolerance policy for the comedy sequel, one of the most difficult nuts to crack. And while comedy follow-ups are something Paramount Pictures have been curiously invested in of late ("Hot Tub Time Machine 2," “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues”), “Zoolander 2,” Ben Stiller’s largely tiresome, predictable and belated sequel to his 2001 fashion-world comedy, is not a wise bet. Mostly uninspired, overcooked, over-plotted, and cobbled together by a string of warmed-over jokes — credited to four writers, no less — “Zoolander 2” at least has the good sense to begin by killing Justin Bieber. But the goodwill earned in assassinating the world’s smuggest pop star is short-lived. It's revealed that Bieber has been gunned down by a secret cabal that is mysteriously terminating the.

The nominations for the 36th Annual Golden Raspberry Awards have been announced and it's packed full of all the worst things in movies that we saw in 2015. Josh Trank's utterly terrible film Fantastic Four was unsurprisingly nominated for 5 awards this year including Worst Picture and Worst Director.
Other films included on the list include Fifty Shades of Grey, Paul Blart Mall Cop 2, Pixels, and Jupiter Ascending. Some of the worst actors on the list of nominations include Johnny Depp, Kevin James, Adam Sandler, Channing Tatum, Katherine Heigl, Mila Kunis and Dakota Johnson.
There are a lot of terrible movies up for awards this year, so it's hard to predict who will win. But I think Fantastic Four and Fifty Shades of Grey will walk away with the majority of them. Here's the nomination video, and below that you'll find the full list. Look them over and let us know what your predictions are.

It's the day before the Oscar nominations are announced, and that means Razzies! Yes, the nominees for the awards that celebrate the best of the worst have been announced. Not too many surprises this year: "Fifty Shades of Grey," "Jupiter Ascending," and "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2" led the pack with six nominations each. Really the only surprise was that "Mortdecai" wasn't up there with them (it only got three noms). Oh, and that Julianne Moore was nominated. I didn't see "Seventh Son" but I can't imagine that she was bad enough in it to be considered one of the worst performances this year. She's Julianne Moore! And dubious congratulations are in order for Kevin James, who was nominated in several acting categories for his work last year. Winners will be announced on February 27 -- as always, the night before the Oscars are handed out. Worst Picture "Fantastic Four" "Fifty Shades of Grey...

Nominations for the 36th Annual Golden Raspberry Awards were announced on Wednesday morning, and the critically derided likes of Jupiter Ascending, Fifty Shades of Grey, Pixels, Fantastic Four, and Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 will vie for the top dishonor at the February ceremony that's meant to celebrate the worst of the year in movies. Each of the Worst Picture nominees were recognized in six different categories of failure, save for Fantastic Four, which managed a comparatively terrific five.

Yes, it's that time of the year again! The day before Hollywood pats itself on the back with Oscar nominations, the Razzies show up to remind everyone why Hollywood deserves a few raspberries with the champagne.
Besides as Jean-Ralphio could tell you, there's nothing more fun than honoring the wooooorst:
This year, there's a four-way tie for the dubious honor of most Razzie Award nominations: "Fifty Shades of Grey," "Pixels," "Jupiter Ascending," and "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2" got six nods. That, at least, is some small consolation for "Fantastic Four," which walked away with "only" five nominations. And "Pan," "Mortdecai," and "Human Centipede 3" were seriously let off the hook. (Hook -- get it? The worst!)
Here's an exciting note: Eddie Redmayne has a chance to win both an Oscar and a Razzie in the same year, since the reigning Best Actor winner will probably be nominated again for "The Danish Girl...

It’s that time of year again when we reflect on the past year at the movies and make arbitrary lists to accommodate readers with a snapshot of what movies to see or skip. It’s just for entertainment value; my opinions are subjective and not to be taken too seriously, but I’m not your keeper, do as you wish.
Having said that, below you will find the best movies I saw this year; with the exception of The Best Movie of the Year, the rest are in no particular.
Let me know what some of your favorite movies of this past year on Twitter or Facebook.
Mad Max: Fury Road
The best movie of the year was Mad Max: Fury Road. I went in with high expectations and they were quickly set on fire by a flamethrower guitar. Every single moment on screen is a mind-blowing revelation in filmmaking.

It’s entirely possible that I am simply too old to enjoy Krampus. The built-in audience for the movie seems to be families with perhaps older kids who still want to see a movie together for the holidays. It’s a safe movie in that way, with broad humor and a more passive approach to scaring people that relies less on jumps and thrills and more on the idea of stuff that happens out of frame. It didn’t work for me at all, it seems like a spectacular waste of a gifted cast to make them do such tired, dreary material. And while I can be a bit wimpy at times during horror movies, I certainly prefer scared to bored.
Krampus has the kind of cast that you would expect to be capable of elevating any material put in front of them. Adam Scott and David Koechner are gifted comic actors but between this,...

Every year, there’s at least one major film on the release schedule that has the most random cast and a topic so Wtf that the audience begins to wonder: who the hell decided this should be a movie and who is this movie for? Some of those movies can turn out to be surprising hits or pleasures (“Pitch Perfect,” “Hot Tub Time Machine,” “Project X”) and some not so much (“Hot Tub Time Machine 2,” Project Almanac,” etc.). That not-so-glowing distinction in 2015 goes to “Freaks Of Nature” — formerly known as "The Kitchen Sink" — a kind of modern “Monster Squad” with a lets-pick-these-guys-out-of-a-hat cast. Here’s the official synopsis: Read More: Patton Oswalt And Bob Odenkirk Fill 'The Kitchen Sink' In Freaks of Nature, we welcome you to Dillford, where three days ago, everything was peaceful and business as usual: the vampires were at the top of the social order,...

Time for a little mid-year check on the Where Are the Women? project, U.S. edition. (See here for the U.K. version. The numbers are almost identical.)
From January through the end of June, 2015, there have been 73 films that have had wide releases in the United States. (This list includes some films that opened at the very end of December 2014 and so had the vast majority of their runs in 2015. It also includes some awards bait that opened in limited release in late 2014 but didn’t open wide until early 2015. These figures also mostly apply to Canada, but there may have been some Canada-only wide releases that I am not aware of and don’t have access to.) These films are, in rough order of release:
Wild
Into the Woods
The Imitation Game
The Gambler
Unbroken
Top Five
The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death
Taken 3
Inherent Vice...

Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie are two very dysfunctional sex addicts in the trailer for Sleeping with Other People.
A new comedy from producers Will Ferrell and Adam McKay casts Sudeikis and Brie as former teenage lovers who reconnect as adults.
Deterred by serial cheating and sex addiction in their past, the pair decide to keep their relationship strictly platonic – but can they really avoid temptation?
Bachelorette writer Leslye Headland has penned and directed Sleeping with Other People, which was filmed on location in New York.
Its supporting cast of comedy veterans includes Adam Scott of Hot Tub Time Machine 2, Orange Is the New Black's Natasha Lyonne and They Came Together star Jason Mantzoukas.
Sleeping with Other People opens on September 11 in the Us. A UK release is yet to be set.
