Exotic Pictures to explore history between the Dutch and Indonesians through war, sex, desire and betrayal.

Exotic Pictures is written by Edwin and writer/director Marco van Geffen and is set between 1940 until late ‘50s. The story takes place in Bali and will be shot entirely on location in Indonesia and the Netherlands.

Once again the European Film Promotion’s (Efp) Film Sales Support (Fss) initiative will come to Toronto to link sales companies from all over Europe to a great array of buyers from across the globe. Supported by the Media Programme of the European Union, Fss has now been aiding the European film industry fro the last 10 years.
"Toronto has and is an important informal market and an important festival for European films, the distributors see the films in a different mood, more quietly, the public screenings are working well. It is a key place to launch a film or to complete previous sales on films that were in Cannes, Venice, Locarno...” (Loïc Magneron, Wide)
“Tiff is a major pillar of the annual festival calendar. Aside from a proliferation of North American buyers, it also attracts top tier international distributors so a favorable reception at Tiff can significantly increase a film's commercial prospects”. (Andrew Orr, Independent)
Due to the limited amount of resources, only 52 out of the 60 films submitted to the Efp will receive financial support to be marketed during the Tiff, which runs from September 5 to 15. This year alone, 372 films total, over 150 from Europe, will screen at the festival many of which will see their world or international premiers there.

September – Penny Panayotopoulou
Section: City to City
Dates: Sunday 8th, Monday 9th
Buzz: Penny Panayotopoulou’s debut film Hard Goodbyes: My Father was warmly received at Tiff in 2002. She returns to the festival with September, which supposedly subverts what Panayotopoulou perceives to be the cynicism of contemporary cinema. Hopefully those optimistic that the skilled filmmaker has perfected her craft during the eleven-year hiatus will be rewarded by this promising sophomore feature – it certainly appears to be the case with solid grades from THR and Screen Daily in Karlovy Vary.
The Gist: Anna, a taciturn 30-something, lives in a small flat with her dog Manu, who means everything to her. After a distressing incident which disrupts her carefully guarded, secluded life, Anna attaches herself to the family of Sofia, a happily married woman and mother of two children.

One of the highlights of the Toronto International Film Festival is the City To City Programme, where the festival puts the spotlight on films set in a specific city. This year’s focus is on the city of Athens in Greece, giving festival goers a glimpse into how Greek cinema, and Greek filmmakers, are being shaped and influenced by current and historical events, both in the country and worldwide. Ten films were announced as part of the 2013 City To City section of the festival, a lineup which includes:
- The Eternal Return of Antonis Paraskevas, by Elina Psykou, the story of a veteran TV host who fakes his own kidnapping to boost ratings, making its North American premiere.
- September, by Penny Panayotopoulou, the story of a woman who forms an unconventional bond with a neighbouring family following her dog’s death, making its North American premiere.

The 2013 Toronto Film Festival selection grew quite a bit today as the organizers announced the Midnight Madness, Documentary, Vanguard, City to City and Cinematheque selections for this year's festival. Among the title announced there aren't exactly a ton of names that pop off the paper immediately. The Midnight Madness selection will open with Lucky McKee's All Cheerleaders Die in which a young girl who practices the dark arts turns on her best friend after she joins the cheer squad. However, I assume most attention will be on Eli Roth's The Green Inferno, a film in which a group of humanitarians go to the Amazon to help a native tribe only to have the tribe kidnap them and later learn their cannibalistic heritage is very much intact. The Documentary selection includes plenty of familiar faces such as Marcel Ophuls, Claude Lanzmann and Errol Morris and Frank Pavich will be bringing Jodorowsky's Dune,...
