After the rather intriguingly erotic “White River”, Ma Xue returns with a completely different movie, “Sonata Wave” which shares some cheeky similarities with its predecessor, namely in the names of the characters, but moves into rather different paths, definitely less surrealistic and definitely not erotic.

Wanan, the utopia of surfing enthusiasts, a relatively unknown place, is the basis of the story. Dong Bin has opened a surfing shop there by the sea, where eventually the protagonist of the movie, Xiao Fang, starts working. The young man, however, seems to be on the run from himself, not being able to move beyond his grief and guilt for an accident that took place with his friend when he was still in school. He spends his days doing nothing outside of working, essentially just waiting for time to pass, with no particular purpose. Things change,...

Although not exactly famous for erotic films, particularly considering the conservative nature of many countries and the harsh censorship occasionally found (with the exception of Japan and Korea), films that could be described as erotic can be found in Asia also. Of note, however, is a recent trend that has begun within the Japanese movie industry, of presenting erotic films that try to cater to the aesthetics of both men and women, while abiding by the MeToo rules, with the result being interesting as much as ambitious as much as an effort mostly found in Chinese cinema, to come up with titles that combine the erotic with the intensely art house.
In this list, we tried to focus on titles where the erotic is one of the key elements, while trying to stay away from exploitation or soft-porn (S. Korean cinema is filled with these btw) for the most part,...

The concept of the art-house erotic film is quite new, in Asian cinema at least, as in the moment there are very few entries in the category, if one could even call it that. Titles like “It Feels so Good” by Haruhiko Arai and “White River” by Ma Xue are the first that come to mind, with “In the Morning of La Petite Mort” also moving towards the same, quite unusual direction.

Ching is a beautiful young prostitute who lives in a stylish apartment where she “services” mostly elderly men, essentially just for the money since she seems not to enjoy herself at all. Matsui is a homeless food delivery driver, who spends his days from destination to destination to deliver goods and his nights to find a place to stay. Eventually,...

Chinese director Huo Meng, Taiwanese actor Lee Hong-chi and Macau-based Maxim Bessmertny are among a dozen emerging East Asian talent who will present feature film projects and works in progress at the Festival of Young Cinema (Asia-Europe).
The inaugural edition of the festival, running Jan. 5-11, 2024, will operate as a bridge between the mainland China markets and audiences on one hand and the production and sales industries behind art-house cinema from Europe and other parts of Asia.
The festival opens Friday with a gala screening of Ning Hao’s “The Movie Emperor” and a later showing of the restored version of Yonfan’s “Bugis Street.”
The festival initiative is spearheaded by Marco Mueller, whose track record includes leading creative positions at festivals in Locarno, Rome, Venice and Beijing. He was also previously among the founders of the International Film Festival & Awards Macao (IFFAM) that debuted in 2016.
