Welcome to It’s a Hit! In this series, IndieWire speaks to creators and showrunners behind a few of our favorite television programs about the moment they realized their show was breaking big.
“House of the Dragon” is now well established as a record-breaking HBO success, but there was a time when that was not a given. Back in 2015, when “Game of Thrones” was still going strong, HBO knew it needed to prepare a follow-up to the franchise. Here’s how Ryan Condal went from the creator of a failed Pedro Pascal pilot to becoming the “House of the Dragon” showrunner and crafting a series packed with bloody action spectacle, sexy royal intrigue, and a new suite of engaging characters.
Back in 2013, when “Game of Thrones” was two seasons in, Ryan Condal had nothing to do with it. He was on location in Santa Fe with Pascal on would-be NBC pilot “The Sixth Gun,...

“This was the planets aligning,” says House of the Dragon co-creator Ryan J. Condal about teaming with Game of Thrones EP and director Miguel Sapochnik on the new George R.R. Martin HBO spinoff series. Condal and Sapochnik had previously developed a number of projects together before House of the Dragon.
You can listen to our intriguing conversation with the House of the Dragon EPs here:
Condal got to know Martin nine years ago when he was shooting his NBC supernatural western pilot The Sixth Gun in the author’s backyard of Santa Fe, Nm. He told his agents he was taking Martin to dinner in what he says was “light fan-stalking” and to “pick his brain.” At the time, Martin didn’t have Fire & Blood, the Targaryen history book, under his belt; that tome the source material for House of the Dragon. Read the Full Issue of Cullen Bunn and Tyler Crook’s Harrow County #1, Courtesy of Dark Horse Comics
As a special quarantine treat back in April, we shared the full issue of Mike Mignola and Chris Roberson's Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1953 - Beyond the Fences #1 with Daily Dead readers, and today we're thrilled to share another classic Dark Horse Comics title: Cullen Bunn and artist Tyler Crook's Harrow County #1.
Through 32 issues in its initial publication run from 2015–2018 via Dark Horse Comics, writer Cullen Bunn and artist Tyler Crook took readers into the chilling and eerily endearing community of Harrow County. Looking back at the successful series, Bunn and Crook have nothing but fond reflections:
Cullen Bunn: "I imagine Harrow County will always be one of the books that I point people to as a work the most accurately represents me as a writer. I’m not humble about that one. I’m proud of the series from start to finish. Tyler and I...

Netflix has won the bidding war for the horror movie “The Unsound,” which “Shazam!” director David F. Sandberg will direct, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
It is based on Boom! Studios’ graphic novel by Cullen Bunn “(The Sixth Gun”). Of course, Sandberg is not new to the horror genre, having directed “Lights Out” and “Annabelle: Creation,” the latter of which grossed $450 million worldwide. “Lights Out” started as a short film.
Skylar James (“29 Mole Street”) is writing the screenplay. Sandberg and Lotta Losten will produce through their production company Mangata, alongside Boom! Studios’ Ross Richie and Stephen Christy. Executive producers are Adam Yoelin and James.

News broke September 12 that HBO was nearing a pilot order for a new “Game of Thrones” prequel series from George R.R. Martin and “Colony” showrunner Ryan Condal. A pilot order would mean HBO would produce the show’s first episode and then determine whether or not to move ahead with a full series. The announcement brings the total number of “Game of Thrones” prequels in development to two, which is both exciting and worrying fans of Martin’s blockbuster fantasy series. Is two “Thrones” prequels too many?
Martin recently took to his blog to assure “Thrones” fans that there is enough material in his “Song of Fire and Ice” universe to create prequels that will be unique and feel fresh from one another. “Huge continents, ten thousand years of history, cities, deserts, oceans, mysteries, triumphs and tragedies,” Martin wrote. “If there were indeed eight million stories in The Naked City in the 50s,...

Hello again, and welcome to the recently resurrected Panel Discussion. I’m Kieran, and every week I’m going to go through some of the best comics of the week to give you an idea what you should pick up that you might have missed. This is another stacked week with some fantastic first issues and great jumping on points for books you might be behind on, so let’s take a look at what’s on offer.
Marvel’s most-recent X-Men relaunch has been a big hit, at least for me, and its the ancillary titles that are really standing out ahead of the main two flagship books. This week’s Iceman #1 by Sina Grace and Alessandro Vitti is a great introduction to a character that people have known all their lives coming to terms with his new status quo. It gets a bit bogged down in X-Men continuity...

Will we ever be finished updating our list of upcoming comic book TV shows? Probably not, and today we have four more to add to the roster. This is due to Dark Horse Comics’ decision to sign a first-look deal with Universal Cable Productions.
Under this new alliance, four new shows have been put straight into development: Cullen Bunn and Tyler Crook's Harrow County; Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba's The Umbrella Academy (previously touted to be a film); Paul Chadwick's Concrete; and, an adaptation of Tom Vaughn’s feature script Back Up. That last one's the anomaly, seeing as no Dark Horse comics under that title have been published, yet.

Had the failures below all thrived, there’s a chance we could now be living in a world with no Breaking Bad, Hannibal, or even South Park. Had these pilots gone on to enjoy healthy, lengthy lives, then Jack Bauer, Oberyn Martell, Chandler Bing and more might all be unrecognisable today.
Here then, are the TV pilots we’re grateful weren’t taken to series because their...

If you’re stricken with the Empty Man disease, your best case scenario is a quick death. It’s that bad. While the infection will eventually kill its host, it’s also capable of turning people into murderous psychopaths. The fifth issue of The Empty Man, a comic book series from Boom! Studios, hits shelves next week, and we’ve been provided with an exclusive set of preview pages that tease what’s ahead.
“Why We Love It: There’s nothing scarier than horror that hits home—a tale of terror only one or two steps removed from our reality. The Empty Man is a dystopic version of the world we know, where a terrifying disease has taken on almost deific connotations.
Why You’LL Love It: Cullen Bunn (The Sixth Gun, Venom) and Vanesa R. Del Rey (Hit) are two of the most exciting talents in the industry, and...

Cullen Bunn will write a new Army of Darkness comic for Dynamite Entertainment.
The prolific writer will be working on the Evil Dead sequel spinoff with long-time series artist Larry Watts.
The opening arc will see Ash Williams's war against the Deadites take him to an entirely new arena - the International Space Station.
"Ash is kind of the ultimate screwball knucklehead, and he really has no business being the 'Chosen One' in the battle against ultimate darkness," said Bunn. "That's what makes him such a compelling underdog,
"With this new series, we're taking the 'fish out of water' storyline to the next level, because not only is Ash fighting the Deadites, he's doing so in the depths of space.

I missed last week’s column, as you no doubt guessed. I’m proud to say that I have the most brutal of excuses; I had my teeth pulled. Two back molars, to be precise. I contend that there are few things as metal as a dental extraction. Unless you’re a big baby and you opt to get put under (more on that later), you’re totally aware for the whole thing. Needles jabbed into your gums? Check. Bone-deep hammer-blows ringing straight through your jaw and into your skull? Check? Uncontrolled loss of blood of the hot and fresh variety? Check. And the most unrelentingly intense part? Watching as they sew shut the gaping wound in your mouth. Nothing quite as surreal as watching that needle and thread go in your mouth, then out through your raw flesh, then in again a few more times. It’s like ‘Enter The Void...

Hosts Remington J. Osborne and Monster Mike will be talking to him about his new books, and what he’s been up to since they last talked. If you have a question for Cullen, Remy, or Mike, feel free to post it on their Wmd Facebook wall...

Digital publisher Lion Forge Comics has released the first issue of Night Trap, written by Cullen Bunn, which represents the company’s first foray into the horror genre.
The first issue of Night Trap sets the stage for a suspenseful story stretching across eight issues. In the terrifying comic, a group of co-eds sets out for a relaxing weekend at a beautiful lake house, but the gorgeous backdrop quickly turns grisly when they encounter a murder-hungry madman who has watched a few too many splatter flicks. What follows is a gory maze of blood and pain, with death as the only likely escape.
Cullen Bunn, author of horror comic The Sixth Gun, wrote Night Trap as an homage to 1980s and '90s slasher films. Although it bears the same name as the video game, Bunn created an original story, influenced by the '90s video game Night Trap and...

Jeffrey Reiner is to helm Syfy's 12 Monkeys television pilot.
The cable network has ordered an hour-long episode based on Terry Gilliam's 1995 movie starring Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis.
Reiner will direct and also serve as executive producer on the project, from Terra Nova writers Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett.
His past work includes the Caprica pilot and episodes of Awake and The Event. He also helmed two NBC pilots which did not make it to series - a 2011 take on Wonder Woman and recent comic book adaptation The Sixth Gun.
Syfy's plans to adapt 12 Monkeys for TV have proven controversial, with the movie's director Gilliam - who is not involved - branding the project "ridiculous" and "dumb".
"It doesn't have anything to do with me and no-one has contacted me," said the filmmaker.

Deadline Hollywood reports that NBC is moving forward with another Oni Press title, Ghost Projekt. Previously, NBC made a pilot for The Sixth Gun but ultimately decided to pass on producing a full fledged season. John Glenn and André Øvreda will write the show which follows "an American Un weapons inspector and a Russian Fsb agent who are forced to team up to chase a group of thieves before they end up spreading dangerous supernatural material stolen from an old abandoned Soviet weapons lab." Øvreda will also direct the pilot and serve as an executive producer alogn with Glenn, Eric Gitter and Noah Greenshner. Oni Press' Joe Nozemack & James Lucas Jones are listed as producers. We told you earlier today that Fox has picked up J.J. Abrams series Almost Human, and now it appears that his good news is continuing. NBC has announced the pickup to series of his project Believe. More about that below. Unfortunately, the news from NBC is mixed, as they have officially nixed Carlton Cuse‘s adaptation of comics-based The Sixth Gun.
While we’re of course pleased that NBC is taking a chance with another sci-fi show, and we’re of course pleased that they’ve picked up Grimm and Revolution for another season, it’s a real disappointment that they weren’t up to the challenge of something more, well, challenging. As a memoriam and tribute, here’s a reminder of what they’re passing up, via comics publisher Oni Press:
During the darkest days of the Civil War, wicked cutthroats came into possession of six pistols of otherworldly power.

It's a story that's become all too familiar. First a network options a comic book property, then they make a pilot, we all get our hopes up, and then the network passes on the pilot, crushing dreams in the process. And now "The Sixth Gun" has joined the ranks of "A.K.A. Jessica Jones," "Punisher," "Locke & Key," "Wonder Woman," "Amazon" and "Chew" as another abandoned comic book TV show. When you see that list and consider what might have been, it just gets really... depressing.
Oni Press' "The Sixth Gun" by Cullen Bunn, Brian Hurtt and Bill Crabtree has become a cult favorite and critical darling over the past few years, and its premise seems tailor made for a television series. And with NBC so down on its luck, a quirky show like "The Sixth Gun" with a built-in fanbase could have been just what the network needed.

NBC has declined to pick-up the option on a full season order of episodes for The Sixth Gun, which is based on the Oni Press comic book series. The announcement comes as a bit of a surprise as previous reports from the Hollywood trades seemed to indicate that the show was virtually a lock for a roster spot on the peacock network's Fall lineup. The pilot secured a talented cast that included Aldis Hodge, Laura Ramsey, Michiel Huisman, Elena Santine and Graham McTavish. With The CW's Amazon put on hold, it's looking a bit like 2012 all over again, which saw pilots for Powers, Aka Jessica Jones, Wonder Woman and Punisher all passed over. Currently, the lone hope for a new television show based on a comic book property is ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. but there's been no official word yet. Should we be worried?...

"The Sixth Gun" pilot has found its widow Missy Hume in Elena Satine. The role marks Satine's first lead role in a TV series, after guest spots on "NCIS" and "Smallville," where the actress played Aquaman's wife Mera. Satine will star alongside Michiel Huisman and Laura Ramsey in the NBC pilot.
"The Sixth Gun" takes place shortly after the Civil War as the lead character, Huisman's Drake Sinclair, searches for six mysterious, mythical guns possessed of otherwordly power. Deadline provides a pretty clear overview of Missy Hume, calling her "a powerful Madame who runs the town of Brimstone kept unnaturally youthful by being in possession of the Fifth Gun. A cold stunningly beautiful woman of great cunning, she is unafraid to use whatever means to collect all Six Guns for her own dark purposes." So get ready to see Satine take a walk on the dark side.

The final bit of key casting news for NBC's supernatural western pilot "The Sixth Gun" has arrived with Elena Satine signing on to play the “widow” Missy Hume, a powerful Madame who runs the town of Brimstone kept unnaturally youthful by being in possession of the Fifth Gun.
Missy is a cold, stunningly beautiful woman of great cunning who is unafraid to use whatever means necessary to collect all Six Guns for her own dark purposes.
Written by Ryan Condal based on the comic, directed by Jeffrey Reiner, and produced by Universal TV, the supernatural Western follows the story of six mythical guns, each with its own other-worldly powers. When the Sixth Gun, the most powerful and dangerous of the group, resurfaces in the hands of an innocent girl, a farmer’s daughter named Becky Montcrief (Laura Ramsey), dark forces reawaken. Pedro Pascal, Aldis Hodge, James LeGros, and Chin Han also star.
