Like Flowers in Sand has finally come to an end, and the last bit of the show is quite healing to watch. The show started off really strong, like listening to a hometown melody on a lonely day; however, it went a little bit wonky in the middle, and the pacing was a little bit off. Still, it’s definitely a fun show to watch, especially if you need some motivation and positive energy to get you going. As it goes, the show starts with the mundane lives of small-towners in South Korea until something massively dramatic changes everything in said small town, and now there’s a mystery to solve, so the whole town comes alive. Well, at least for a little bit. Like Flowers in Sand doesn’t disappoint in the end and gives us the perfect goodbye. The last episode ended with Mi-Ran’s life in danger...

The K-drama Like Flowers in Sand is coming to an end, and as much as I like a mystery, I wish we had the answer for who killed Mi-Ran’s father and Chil-Seong by now. It’s really quite tiresome to wait until the last episode for the reveal when it’s not even the most important part of the story. The ssireum has taken a backseat, and I wonder if we’ll ever get to see Baek-Du actually win a championship, making his family and Du-Sik proud again. On top of that, they tried to feed us a love story, which would’ve been cute if there hadn’t been so much other stuff going on to distract us from it. So, while I did think in the beginning that Like Flowers in Sand was a nice little small-town K-drama with an exciting mystery, I can’t help but...

While I was having a good time watching Like Flowers in Sand as a fun slice-of-life rural town show thus far, I’m feeling a little bit bored by the mystery premise. I suppose since the show is ending next week, it would’ve made more sense for that chapter to be closed this week and for the romance and ssireum plot points to take over in the final two episodes for a fun and happy ending. I found the latest two episodes quite tedious, and it took me quite a bit of time to get through them both. It’s a shame because the show has everything to make it a part of the list of “healing” K-dramas like When the Camellia Blooms (the premises are quite similar too). With only two episodes remaining, we’re nowhere close to finding the culprit, and neither is the romance blooming. It...

Like Flowers in Sand has me wondering if Jang Dong-Yoon is a professional athlete, because those running skills are incredible. We’ve got to admit, it’s incredible how the Korean entertainment industry mixes small-town slice-of-life with crime thrillers. This one is an especially impressive show with its inspiring storytelling and sweet message. However, things are getting moody now that we’re approaching the show’s end. We’ve passed the mid-way mark, so it’s time to get into the gritty details of what went down in this town, not just in the recent past but 20 years ago. Last week, Hyeon-Uk noticed there was something strange about Mi-Ran, and this week we’re going to learn how she’s connected with Du-Sik and the rest of the ssireum team.

Netflix’s new K-drama, Like Flowers in Sand, is a series without waste — a deliberate, consoling dive into ssireum, a traditional form of South Korean wrestling, set in an unassuming Geosan town reflected perfectly in Jang Dong-yoon’s earnest and unrefined Kim Baek-doo. The series begins as Baek-doo’s ssireum career ostensibly ends. A former childhood prodigy, the 33-year-old has failed to win a senior championship. As a scion of a family of winners, in a town defined by ssireum, no one can explain his failure. After getting blackout drunk,...

In last week’s episodes of Like Flowers in Sand, we learned that Coach Yeon had been found dead through suicide. The team doesn’t know about it yet, and they’re mostly focused on figuring out who their new coach will be after Yeon abruptly quit on them during peak match season. Yu-Gyeong makes it seem like Baek-Du is interested in being the coach when really she just wants him to keep playing the sport. Du-Sik left the city back in the day because of some huge scandal, but we’re yet to find out the details about what happened back then. Episodes 5 and 6 definitely point us in the right direction on this subject.

Like Flowers in Sand is turning out to be the new healing drama that we didn’t know we were looking for. Reminding us of the hit show When The Camellia Blooms, Like Flowers in Sand follows Ssireum player Baek-Du, who abruptly decides to give up on his passion. This show is the perfect motivation you need for the new year, as it reminds you that even though the people around you may not be encouraging, there’s always someone on your side, and you must keep doing what you love. Yes, I gathered that in four episodes. At the end of episode 2, a new guest arrives in town, calling Oh Yu-Gyeong “honey” and leaving Baek-Du confused.

What Happens In Episode 3?
Hyeon-Uk who just arrived to the town in the day claims to be Yu-Gyeong’s husband. They lock hands as they walk out of the “ssireum” gym,...

It’s almost the end of the year, and Netflix doesn’t seem to be done with serving Korean content just yet. The Korean entertainment industry is all in this time of the year, and we’re getting a taste of everything they have to offer! From the reality dating show Single’s Inferno to the highly anticipated Gyeongseong Creature and Death Game, the holidays seem to be covered for us, but Like Flowers in Sand may turn out to be the underdog that takes us by surprise, just like its protagonist. Like Flowers in Sand stars Jang Dong-Yoon and Lee Joo-Myoung in leading roles and follows the story of a “Ssireum” athlete (a traditional wrestling sport) who gives up after losing too many championships. When his childhood friend returns, she reignites the sporty spark in him.
