When Netflix released its latest major data set on Thursday — its second under the name of What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report — animated features continued to demonstrate a major impact for the streamer. Of the top 100 most viewed titles in the period of review, from July to December 2023, 33 were animated, bringing in a total of 1,087,600,000 views.
That being said, titles licensed from other studios continued to heavily overshadow Netflix originals, in terms of impact. Of the 33 animated titles in the Top 100, five were produced by Netflix; the Adam Sandler starrer Leo ranked the highest at #3 overall, coming in with 96 million views. Others that made the cut included The Monkey King, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, the Oscar-nominated Nimona, The Sea Beast and Back to the Outback.

While Amazon MGM Studios didn’t take the stage at CinemaCon, they did meet with exhibitors and key press to strut their future theatrical slate, in particular they showed off ten minutes of the Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans’ movie Red One. While we agree to keep mum about the details of the Santa Claus rescue movie, let’s just say the originally conceived for Prime Video title is definitely meant for theatrical, which is where it’s going on Nov. 15; the only wide release currently on that weekend.
Let’s just say that Red One is a fire-breathing Christmas action movie that completely reinvents the holiday genre. There hasn’t been a mass appealing Christmas tentpole in six years, the last being Illumination/Universal’s The Grinch which made over a half billion worldwide. Red One is a really fun original action film for both Johnson and Evans, and...

Netflix’s Global Top 10 Films ft Damsel ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
The list of Netflix’s Global Top 10 Films is now out. The list includes only English movies; dated from March 4 to March 10, 2024. Millie Bobby Brown’s Damsel sits at the top of the list. The movie released on the streaming platform on March 8, 2024, and within two days, it surpassed Code 8 Part II, which was at the top from February 26 to March 3. The streaming platform released the new list recently.
Millie Bobby Brown’s Damsel was released on Women’s Day with a twist to the fairytale of “damsel in distress”. Millie plays Elodie, who is married off to a Prince whose family sacrifices her due to a ruthless ancestral ritual. Elodie has to fight a fire-spitting dragon and save herself. The Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directorial also stars Ray Winstone, Angela Bassett, Nick Robinson, Robin Wright and others.

Illumination and Nintendo will join forces to produce a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.
The companies previously partnered on last year’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which grossed more than $1.3 billion and became the second highest-grossing movie of 2023. It’s unclear which fanciful characters the new film will focus on — be they plumbers, princesses, Koopas or other residents of the Mushroom Kingdom — and the partners are not using the word “sequel.” However, the companies did specify that the movie will be released in theaters on April 3, 2026, in the U.S. and additional markets globally. It will be unveiled in other territories throughout April.

The streaming gods have smiled on Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
The Disney+ series based on author Rick Riordan’s best-selling books opened to a good-sized audience in the week before Christmas. The first two episodes, which debuted the evening of Dec. 19, drew about 572 million minutes of watch time, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings. With a combined run time of 80 minutes, that works out to about 7.15 million complete runs (or “views” as currently defined by much of the industry) of the two episodes in the United States.
Disney had earlier said that the first episode had earned 13.3 million views worldwide — equivalent to a little more than 505 million minutes — over its first six days. The Nielsen figures for the premiere put Percy Jackson ahead of Disney+’s last two Marvel premieres, Secret Invasion (461 million minutes) and season two of Loki (446 million), in total viewing time.
Prime Video’s Reacher moved up to the overall No.

Reacher began its second season with big viewing-time numbers, cementing its status as one of the most popular shows on Amazon’s Prime Video.
The series based on Lee Child’s novels had 1.69 billion minutes of watch time for the week of Dec. 11-17; season two’s first three episodes debuted Dec. 15 (viewing time for the week also includes the eight episodes of season one). That’s within 10 percent of Reacher’s total for its series premiere week (1.84 billion minutes) in February 2022, when Prime Video released the entire season at once. Season two is on a weekly release pattern after the opening three-episode salvo.
The 1.69 billion minutes for Reacher put the series in second place overall in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for the week. Netflix’s movie Leave the World Behind repeated as the overall No. 1 title, edging up to 1.95 billion minutes of viewing from 1.92 billion the previous week.

Three weeks after premiering on Netflix, Young Sheldon has ascended to the most watched show on streaming platforms in the United States. A platform switch to Netflix also sent The Super Mario Bros. Movie to its biggest streaming week to date.
The two titles, which rank second and third on Nielsen’s streaming chart for the week of Dec. 4-10, are the latest examples of Netflix’s multiplying power. Young Sheldon had 1.63 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix and Max for the week, after recording 1.85 billion minutes a week earlier and 963 million for its first week on both platforms. The Big Bang Theory prequel had never charted before the past three weeks (it was previously exclusive to Max) and has easily surpassed its parent show in viewing time all three weeks. On January 1, 2024, the original incarnation of Mickey Mouse, Steamboat Willie, entered into the public domain. Steamboat Willie, born in 1928, is the crown jewel of thousands of pieces of intellectual property that have just seen their copyright expire, a crop that also includes the original German version of “All Quiet on the Western Front,” Virginia Woolf’s “Orlando,” an iteration of Peter Pan, and more.
Monday’s date had been circled on the calendar of many opportunistic filmmakers, and not 48 hours after New Year’s Eve turned to New Year’s Day, several Steamboat Willie-inspired projects — all of them some iteration of twisted, slasher horror — have been announced. This one already put out a trailer, this one (from the guy who did a horror parody of “The Grinch”) put out a press release, and this one is a horror video game based on Mickey — er, Willie — the most popular cartoon character in the world.

Before Netflix started decimating its production teams, and canceling every show, it was once the land of second opportunities. The streaming platform not only produced great shows, but also offered a place where underappreciated and underseen titles could finally find an audience. In the case of TV shows, some even got a chance to finish their stories. "Breaking Bad" became a global hit thanks to people being able to binge on Netflix, and "Arrested Development" was brought back to life almost a decade after being canceled, as were "Lucifer" and "Manifest."
Sadly, the streamer doesn't seem to be in the business of reviving titles anymore, and Netflix originals often get scant promotion and slip under the radar. And yet, the platform does still provide a platform for underappreciated titles to find a larger audience even years after their initial release. Case in point: the sudden resurgence in popularity of "The Book of Life,...

Social media users recently marveled that last month marked 20 years since three modern Christmas favorites — New Line’s Elf, Universal’s Love Actually and Miramax’s Bad Santa — all hit theaters within weeks of each other. Two decades later, you don’t need to feel like a cotton-headed ninny-muggins if you’re among those wondering why studios don’t release holiday theatrical offerings in the way they once did.
Although most Christmas films don’t tend to follow the path of, say, 1990’s Home Alone, which topped the domestic box office for a whopping 12 straight weeks, they had typically been a staple of the release calendar, with a handful of titles hitting theaters annually, as recently as the late 2010s. That list includes such 2016 theatrical offerings as Almost Christmas, Bad Santa 2, Office Christmas Party and Why Him?, followed by 2017’s Daddy’s Home 2, A Bad Moms Christmas and animated...

NBCUniversal has led the way in terms of holiday season programming. Beginning with record viewership of the annual Macy’s Parade and other ratings wins along the way, the company has boasted a total of 82 million viewers of its holiday programming across NBC and Peacock since Thanksgiving, according to the most current measurement available.
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was the No. 1 program contributing to that total, as the event has remained the most-watched non-news and non-sports program on all of television since 2021. After debuting to 28.5 million viewers, it has since reached 40 million viewers.
NBCU’s next four most-watched holiday programs of the year are the NFL game between San Francisco and Seattle on Thanksgiving night (33 million viewers), “National Dog Show” (21 million viewers), “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” (12 million viewers) and “Christmas at the Opry” (8 million viewers).

“Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” is one of four movies opening in theaters over the weekend. Which of the new releases will sink and which will swim at the box office?
Jason Momoa’s “Aquaman” sequel is expected to float to the top of charts in North America over fellow newcomers: Universal and Illumination’s animated “Migration,” Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell’s romantic comedy “Anyone but You” and A24’s sports drama “The Iron Claw.” But the Warner Bros. comic book installment faces choppy waters. It’s targeting a soft $35 million to $40 million in its four-day debut (including Monday’s Christmas Day), which could make it the latest catastrophe in a terrible year for superhero movies.
December releases aren’t known to generate big opening weekends and instead tend to enjoy staying power through the new year. For example, 2018’s “Aquaman” collected an unspectacular $67 million to start but powered...

“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” (Tas Rights Management), with three added songs, came out for rent (at $19.89) on the singer’s birthday (an unusual Wednesday release for PVOD). It scored well, with two #1s (both Google Play and Vudu), as well as iTunes initially. But in a surprise, “Killers of the Flower Moon” (Paramount for Apple) is back atop iTunes, while holding on well elsewhere.
Both #1s are noteworthy, as well as another factor: An unexpected decision from Universal. Normally, even as a decent performer (it has grossed $88 million), “Trolls Band Together” would have come to PVOD after three weeks in theaters. But it’s actually only available on December 19, after its fifth weekend in theaters. That took it away from competition until close to Christmas.
Curiously, “Eras” at this point is not for download, with no word on whether that will be added for last-minute gift giving. It’s...

Box Office Records Broken By The Super Mario Bros Movie(Photo Credit –IMDb)
Super Mario Bros emerged as one of the highest-earning movies of 2023 so far, creating several other box office records. The animated movie is based on the iconic Nintendo Mario video game. It had actors like Chris Pratt, Jack Black, Anya Taylor-Joy, and others in the voice cast, and they all did a splendid job, especially Jack has been receiving a lot of praise for his voice acting and his song ‘Peaches.’
Jack reportedly wrote the lyrics of the song himself. The song is about his love for Princess Peach, and the versatile actor sang it himself. In a recent interview, Black shared his thoughts on the sequel of the video game-inspired film. The film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and was made on an estimated budget of $100 million.

The final season of The Crown got off to a slower start in Nielsen’s streaming rankings — which might have something to do with the fact that Netflix released only a part of the season.
The Emmy-winning drama was the most watched show on streaming for the week of Nov. 13-19, but its 943 million minutes of viewing was less than half of that for season five’s opening (2.13 billion minutes) a year ago. It’s worth noting that Netflix released just four of The Crown’s final 10 episodes on Nov. 16 rather than the full season; the remaining six debuted Dec. 14 (and, because of the four-week lag for Nielsen’s streaming charts, watch time figures for those episodes won’t be public until mid-January).
The Crown was the only original series in Nielsen’s overall top 10. David Fincher’s Netflix movie The Killer finished 10th with 557 million minutes of viewing, but...

A Complete Guide to the Best Grinch Movies and TV Shows Out There(Photo Credit –IMDb)
The grumpy Grinch, known for his dislike of all things Christmas, has always been a staple of mainstream media during the holidays, thanks to Dr. Suess’s children’s book “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” But it’s the young adults of this generation that relate to this green goblin more than children do. He’s a mean-spirited, cynical, and sarcastic creature who just does not get the appeal of Christmas. He doesn’t enjoy the racket that Christmas causes and prefers to be in a quiet, peaceful place instead. But when the folks of Whoville go too far with their festivities, he vows to destroy Christmas once and for all.
The Grinch is undeniably fascinating. There have been multiple adaptations of him across the film industry centering around the premise of him trying to ruin Christmas.

The PVOD debuts of “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Leave the World Behind,” high-profile movies adapted from adult-oriented bestsellers, are currently #1 on their respective platforms. Martin Scorsese’s film tops all PVOD charts, and the timely Long Island-set thriller co-produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground is #1 at Netflix.
Both films dislodged high-powered #1 titles. “Oppenheimer,” released four months after its theatrical run began, enjoyed two weeks in the top PVOD slot. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” the year’s #2 movie (behind “Barbie” and just ahead of Christopher Nolan’s historical epic) managed five days in the lead at Netflix after previous play, which included streaming on Peacock.
“Flower Moon” and “Leave the World Behind” each reflect the state of film platforming. Apple produced “Flower Moon” with Paramount handling theatrical distribution. It had a 46-day window before debuting on revenue-rich PVOD. At $19.99, Apple gets the lion’s share of rentals.

"Merry Little Batman" is the latest Warner Bros. Animation movie, part of the wave of DC animated titles that Warner Bros. Discovery stupidly gave away under David Zaslav's regime.
The film follows Damian Wayne as he is forced to defend his home, and eventually all of Gotham, from supervillains while Batman is away one Christmas Eve. It is part Batman movie, part "Home Alone," part "The Grinch", and full Caped Crusader bliss. "Merry Little Batman" features a distinct and unique visual style that is reminiscent of Tim Burton's animated productions, with director Mike Roth ("Regular Show") giving the film an illustrative look inspired by Ronald Searle.
Arguably, the standout element is, well, Batman. Though the focus is definitely on Damian's story, this is a Batman unlike any we've seen in TV or film. This is a Batman without the growl. Instead, this Batman is a goof.

Loki scored its biggest tune-in of season two for the week of its finale, rising by almost 200 million minutes over the prior week. That’s the good news.
The bad news for the Marvel/Disney+ series is that despite the jump, Loki still finished its second season well behind the first in terms of viewing time, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings. Kids’ favorite Bluey led the overall rankings for the week of Nov. 6-12, and Friends continued to post higher than usual numbers two weeks after the death of star Matthew Perry.
Loki had 753 million minutes of viewing for the week (its finale debuted Nov. 9), a 34 percent jump from the previous week and its best showing of the season by a wide margin. The previous season two high was 588 million minutes for Oct. 9-15. Over the six weeks of season two, the series racked up about 3.39 billion minutes of...

Hallmark's latest holiday film drops Thursday, December 7, on Hallmark Movies Now, reminding us to be cautious of what we wish for.
Rescuing Christmas follows a woman overwhelmed with the holidays, so she wishes it would disappear. When she's filled with wish regret, she needs to bring it back, and she turns to an unlikely ally: her recent blind date and her brother-in-law's friend Sam.
Rachael Leigh Cook and Sam Page star in this holiday rom-com, and neither is a stranger to the Hallmark franchise.
Cook has had the perfect blend of comedy and romance since she appeared in She's All That 25 years ago, and she still rocks it when she reaches the end of her rope and then tries to fix things.
If you ask anyone, they'll confirm that planning for Christmas is as overwhelming as it is joyous. You need to buy all the presents, do the holiday baking,...

There was no changing of the guard for Netflix’s Top 10 this week.
After making the streamer’s biggest animated film debut ever, Adam Sandler’s Leo stayed atop the English-language film list from November 27 to December 3 with another 23.6M views. That made it the most-viewed title on the service for the second consecutive week.
Same thing goes for the TV side of things, where Squid Game: The Challenge remained the top series of the week despite the audience dropping dramatically. The reality competition series mustered 11.4M views, also boosting Squid Game to No. 7 on the Non-English TV list with 1.5M views.
Elsewhere in film, Family Switch debuted at No. 2 with 22.2M views, while holiday films including Best.Christmas.Ever! and Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch continued to dominate the remainder of the list. David Fincher’s The Killer spent its fourth week on the list at No. 7 with 3.6M views,...

Turns out, it wasn’t much of a challenge at all.
“Squid Game: The Challenge” dominated Netflix’s overall leaderboard in its debut week, when it drew 20.1 million views. The unscripted competition series picked up where the I.P. left off in 2021, bumping Part 1 of “The Crown’s” sixth season to second place (8.8 million views) for the week of November 20, 2023.
“Squid Game: The Challenge,” filmed in the UK, is an English-language series; Og “Squid Game” was a Korean-language series dubbed into local languages. As such, the scripted show technically rests atop Netflix’s “Non-English” list, though it blows away all the English-language stuff anyway.
“The Challenge” was so big it brought “Squid Game” back to the Global Top 10 for non-english series — at no. 6 with 1.6 million views — its 21st appearance. The scripted show hadn’t made the list since the week ending June 19, 2022. The long Thanksgiving holiday weekend sure helped the streams pile up.

Jim Carrey‘s rep is speaking out in response to reports that he is preparing to reprise his role as the Grinch in a sequel to How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
The 2000 live-action movie was a big box office success, grossing $260 million at the domestic box office and cementing itself as a Christmas classic.
Jim‘s live-action version of the Grinch has also become an iconic character that is featured at Universal Studios theme parks during the holiday season.
So, what do you need to know about a potential sequel?

The actor’s rep told People, “There is no truth to Jim reprising his role as the Grinch in a sequel to The Grinch.”
We might not be seeing Jim in many movies in the future at all following the comments he made in early 2022.

Christmas isn’t tomorrow — unless you’re actually reading this on December 24, which is possible! — but it is practically here! And that means it’s time for the annual Whobilation of watching Dr. Seuss’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” once again.
Of course, in 2023, there are a few ‘Grinch’ movies to choose from. There’s the original animated special, there’s Jim Carrey’s version and there’s Benedict Cumberbatch’s take on the grumpy character (though you’d be forgiven if you forgot that one existed). The story largely remains the same in each one: Grinch hates Christmas, Grinch decides to steal Christmas, Grinch has the best dog in the world, and Grinch eventually sees the error of his ways.
As Carrey’s Grinch himself says: It’s joyful and triumphant. So, we’ve rounded up where each one is streaming this holiday season..

November is here, and that means the holiday season isn’t far behind! Christmas is now fewer than eight weeks out, and many lovers of the yuletide time of year are already setting up their holiday watchlists. It’s hard to imagine such watchlists being truly complete, however, without a visit from Dr. Seuss’s mean, green, Christmas-hating Grinch!
There have been three Grinch movies made thus far; 1966’s animated classic “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” the Jim Carrey-starring live-action movie of the same name which first came out in 2000, and 2018’s animated “The Grinch,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the holiday-loathing titular character.

Let’s-a go! “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” Universal and Illumination’s spring box office smash, is landing on Netflix in time for the holidays.
It will debut on the streaming service on Dec. 3, months after grossing $1.36 billion in global ticket sales. The animated adventure will still be available on Peacock, the platform owned by NBCUniversal, where it premiered in August. Universal struck a licensing deal to let “Mario” play on Netflix, which has far more subscribers than Peacock.
A collaboration between Universal, Illumination and Nintendo, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” became a four-quadrant hit and the first movie of the year to cross the $1 billion mark. (“Barbie” has since joined the club.) It’s the second-highest-grossing movie of the year behind “Barbie” ($1.44 billion) as well as the most successful video game adaptation of all time. One cannot understate the popularity of Ron Howard's over-designed 2000 winter holiday film "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas." Although made for an exorbitant budget of $123 million, "Grinch" would earn over $345 million worldwide and become a Christmastime staple in many a home. This despite being a bloated, 105-minute expansion of a 1957 Dr. Seuss picture book that was only 64 pages.
Seuss' "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" was previously adapted into a 25-minute TV special in 1966, which itself garnered animated follow-ups in 1977 and 1982. Since 2000, the book was also made into a 2007 stage musical, a 2018 animated film called merely "The Grinch," and a 2020 filmed version of the stage production. 2022 also saw the release of a horror spoof of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" called "The Mean One."
This is all in addition to an unending deluge of Grinch-themed merchandise that floods malls every winter holiday season. The merch, some might say,...

Exclusive: Paramount Animation and Temple Hill have a new original animated movie in the works, Superworld, based on the book series of the same name, created and illustrated by Yarrow and Carrie Cheney.
Superworld is set in an alternate world where everybody has powers, however, a supervillain has taken over. The one kid who lacks special abilities is the only person who’s able to steal the Super Stone that keeps the villain in control – but to do that, he must pull off the dangerous heist while rallying his hero friends in a war against the villains.
Superworld: Save Noah, on which the Paramount pic is based, was published by Random House Childrenn’s Books in November 2022. Their upcoming second book in the series, Superworld: Destructo World, will be published by the same label in early 2025.
Brad Butler will oversee the project for Paramount Animation, I understand.
