I did not expect this much from the first episode of the season. To start, the infinity castle is such a unique place that is so surreal and the animation while we're witnessing it adds so much to it. When we saw it in the season 1 finale I thought it was out of this world, but seeing it now with such higher stakes is breathtaking and ufotable keeps elevating it higher and higher. I hope this is a place where we get a showdown between Muzan and our main characters because a fight scene here would be stunning.
Maybe it was just me but I did NOT expect all of these upper ranks to show up in episode 1, or at least not the upper 1 demon. Kokushibo has such a great character design and scary aura to him that sets himself apart from the rest. I honestly would've preferred if he was revealed at the end of the season and maybe if he showed up at the end of a battle and made a huge statement, but I'm still ok with finding out all of the upper ranks at once considering Gyutaro just died and it was the first upper rank to get killed in 113 years, so clearly it was a huge deal that needed the appearance of them all. Also want to mention that Doma is a lot of fun to watch and while I wish they varied the remaining demons a little more in terms of how serious they are, I love Doma's personality even though it's a casual anime trope to have characters with that attitude. But I don't want to judge too early because we still haven't seen much of upper 4 & 5 yet and I feel like they'll grow on me as the season progresses.
Something that I'm extremely curious about is why Kokushibo looks so similar to Tanjiro's father. Not only him, but the man in Tanjiro's dream. Maybe I missed it but they seem like the same person? Just the one in the dream was in human form. I could be completely wrong and forgive me if I am but then we saw him at the end of the episode with the same earrings as Tanjiro. I've always been extremely curious because as we saw when Daki was fighting Tanjiro, Muzan was scared of Tanjiro's father and Muzan's scent was obviously at the scene of where Tanjiro's family got murdered. So there are a lot of moving parts there that I can't really connect, but I feel like Kokushibo is intertwined with it in some way. I thought maybe he could be Tanjiro's uncle?? I know I probably sound like I'm reaching here but Kokushibo can't look that similar and not have some relation to the Kamado family. And if that's him in human form in the dream sequence and he's somehow at the swordsmith village then that'd be insane, but I feel like I'm reaching to the moon lmao. Nonetheless I'm excited to see the backstory of Kokushibo and who the hell is that man in Tanjiro's dream sequence that is at the village.
In regards to the village, I love that it's so cautious and secretive. It requires so many transports to get there to hide its identity and giving that sense of realism to it so it can't be found. It makes me curious because if this is the swordsmith village arc and assuming everything takes place here, how will the upper rank demons find them here? Maybe it's due to Tanjiro going on his scavenger hunt with Nezuko and going too far out, or hell maybe the man in Tanjiro's dream actually has something to do with the demons and is some informant but I'm just spitballing with that lol. It's interesting to see that Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Zenitsu are split up right now. I'm assuming later in the season they'll be reunited at the village but I wonder what type of arcs they'll be given prior to that, and what'll lead them to the village given they're always together. Mitsuri had a fun introduction and the scene where her and Tanjiro were talking in the hallway about him fighting an upper rank was probably my favorite between the two, but I hope her character has more depth to it that's shown in the future considering right now she seems like the generic upbeat character. But I'm really looking forward to seeing her and Muichiro this season. Also it was great to see that the kid with the purple attire and the scars is actually related to Sanemi. I hope we find out why they both have similar scars and what path they went down to get them, and why their relationship seems to not be in the best shape.
But overall I did not expect to get this much in the first episode considering we got every upper rank demon revealed. While Tanjiro heading to the swordsmith village wasn't out of this world or anything, the opening scene most certainly was great to see, and I'm excited to see where this season goes considering the last 2 arcs were stellar and showed no signs of slowing down.
