Gael García Bernal and La Corriente del Golfo, his Mexico City production house launched last year with Diego Luna, have unveiled the poster for “Chicuarotes,” directed by the multi-prized Mexican actor-producer and world premiering in Official Selection at next week’s Cannes Film Festival.
Since García Bernal’s feature debut “Deficit,” selected for Cannes’ Critics’ Week in 2007, he has continued to direct: a segment of “Revolución,” for example, an episode of “Mozart in the Jungle,” which won him a Golden Globe as an actor, and the pilot for Fox Networks Group Latin America’s “Here on Earth,” which he showran and which won the inaugural Zurich Series Award last year.
A dramedy, “Chicuarotes” is, however, García Bernal’s second feature as a director.

Los Cabos, Mexico — Paula Amor, the former head of communications of Mexico’s Morelia Festival, now has one of the most exciting jobs in Mexico, running La Corriente del Golfo, the new film-tv production shingle launched by Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna in April.
An inevitable major production force, it also marks a pivot in a film-tv company’s range and focus of operations.
At Canana, Luna and García Bernal leveraged their fame as actors to ensure movies got made at a budgetary level which their directors required. Think Pablo Larraín’s “No.” García Bernal once remarked that launching Ambulante, the touring documentary festival, was one of his proudest achievements. They have now applied this leverage in a different sphere with the launch of The Day After.

It’s rare to see someone on the verge of action-figure metamorphosis. Until now, Diego Luna was a well-respected actor (“Milk” and “Mister Lonely,” among many others) as well as a producer of TV and film, including his own directorial efforts “Mr. Pig,” “Cesar Chavez,” and “Abel.” He’s better known in his native Mexico than in the U.S.
However, as the male lead of Gareth Edwards’ “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” the first standalone feature in the rapidly expanding “Star Wars” universe, all of that will change as of December 16.
He’s giddy, if not geeky, about this turn of events. A naturally generous and fast talker, Luna punctuates his points with big hand motions and bigger smiles as he shares the same refrain that seems to be programmed into all newly minted “Star Wars” actors: They were fans first. Being cast in this cinematic universe is...

"Why is there a hog in your motel room?" The first trailer has debuted for a film called Mr. Pig, or Sr. Pig in Spanish, starring Danny Glover as an "old school" pig farmer who goes on a road trip down to Mexico along with a very large pig. This actually originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival but I don't remember hearing much buzz about it. Mexican actor Diego Luna directs the film (his third feature film), which is described as "a beautiful road movie, and a chance to talk about love for Mexico through the eyes of an American." The cast also includes Maya Rudolph, who co-stars as Glover's estranged daughter who joins him on his trip. I'm not sure what to make of this, it looks charming, but also looks a little dry. Enjoy. Here's the first international trailer (+ poster) for Diego Luna's Mr. Pig, on...

Diego Luna has quietly been carving out a directorial career, with a body of work that’s slowly but surely growing larger in size. Best known for his acting in films like "Y Tu Mama Tambien" and the upcoming "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," Diego Luna has also been building a career as a director with "Abel" in 2010 and "Cesar Chavez" in 2014.
He returns with the much more quirky "Mr. Pig" this year, a dramedy about an old school Georgian pig farmer (Danny Glover) who, on the brink of losing everything, hits the road with this daughter (Maya Rudolph) to find a final resting place for his beloved swine Howie.
Luna's friend Gael Garcia Bernal executive producers the film which has yet to receive U.S. distribution.

He’ll be seen in one of our most-anticipated films of the year, Ana Lily Amirpour‘s The Bad Batch, and perhaps the most-anticipated everywhere else, Gareth Edwards‘ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but Diego Luna found time in between to direct another feature. His third foray in the director’s chair, Mr. Pig, looks to be a sweet, strange tale about a man and his pig.
While there’s no U.S. release yet, the first trailer has now arrived for the film that premiered at Sundance. Starring Danny Glover and Maya Rudolph, the story follows a man going on a road trip with his pig, with a price he’s willing to sell it for that seems to be too high for any buyers. What ensues seems to be a heartfelt look into friendship, aging, and a man’s bond with an animal.

While much of the film hubbub has been concentrated on awards season lately, let’s not forget about the essential Sundance Film Festival. Founded in 1978, Sundance now has an attendance of almost 50,000, making it the largest independent film festival in the United States. It's where careers are made, future Oscar contenders are found, and bold new voices emerge. But it's also a home for veterans too. Many filmmakers have long been friends to Sundance and launched films there. The film opens inside a rustic home, filthy and in disarray. Dirty dishes are stacked a mile high, miscellaneous items are randomly scattered across the room, and a sizable bottle of brown liquor appears mostly empty. A sonically assaultive landline telephone begins to ring, waking up Eubanks (Danny Glover). Delaying as long as he can, he ambles into the kitchen, finally answering the phone. It's his daughter, Eunice (Maya Rudolph), audibly exasperated as she asks whether he'll be visiting her and the grandchildren this weekend. Eubanks begins to ramble off reasons why it's going to be difficult for that to happen. They both know the answer, though. He won't be there, and within five minutes, it's clear he never really has been. That guilt, brought on by parental absence, permeates every frame of "Mr. Pig," the latest directorial effort by Diego Luna. And it doesn't go away. Soon we discover...

Diego Luna’s third narrative feature directorial Mr. Pig is a road trip through Mexico, through the eyes of an American farmer. Danny Glover plays Ambrose, who on the edge of losing his farm, embarks on a road trip with his large prized pig to find him a new home south of the border. As far as road trip movies in which two estranged characters reconnect go, Diego Luna’s fourth directorial effort, “Mr. Pig,” is not concerned with eliminating or altering the emotional tropes associated with the works of its kind. On the contrary, the famed actor-turned-filmmaker embraces them with a refreshing cultural outlook in a film that is as much about modernity overshadowing tradition as it is about the sheer magic of an experience rather than its outcome.
Financially devastated, probably because of his diligent rejection of current farming practices though it’s never specified, Ambrose (Danny Glover) a 75-year-old African American hog farmer from California, heads to Mexico to find his best friend, an imposing dark pig named Howie, a new home and to make some money in return. The man-hog friendship is endearing, but it also points at the profound loneliness Ambrose is struggling with. Howie doesn’t judge or question him and, like good friends should, they both accept their inherent shortcomings – the plump pig hates showers and Ambrose has a drinking problem. It's an odd dynamic, but it seems to comfort the aging and defeated man.
Enduring a few bumps along the road, Ambrose and his beloved animal make it to the Mexican state of Jalisco where he meets with his best friend’s son (played by Mexican actor José María Yazpik), now in charge of the family’s hog business after his father’s passing, to discuss Howie’s future and reminisce about happier times. Noticing that his hog’s destiny in such a modern farm will be one of confinement and isolation, Ambrose reconsiders. While he accepts the fact that their purpose is to feed mankind, he despises the idea of seeing Howie as disposable merchandise.
Soon, Ambrose’s deteriorating health prompts his daughter Eunice (Maya Rudolph) to come down to look after him. Reluctantly she joins the mission to sell Howie to someone that can give him a life that measures up to Ambrose's standards, while also hoping to get to know her father beyond his charismatic front. Two strangers in a strange land that proves not to be so strange after all.
Leaving behind recent supporting roles that don’t capitalize on the veteran thespian’s abilities, Danny Glover commands the film with masculine fragility. He is not a rigid man on the surface and is particularly tender with Howie, but has managed to selfishly avoid his past failures as a self-defense mechanism. Also granted a prime opportunity to step away from her familiar comical performances, Maya Rudolph takes on a character of whom we know very little except for her desire to seek resolution regarding her father’s abandonment.
Luna has stated that “Mr. Pig” came into existence as a way to honor his father and that of his co-writer Augusto Mendoza. That initial desire to scrutinize the difficulties of parenthood and to build a cinematic bridge between him and his father is absolutely palpable in "Mr. Pig." However, he has also pointed out that this film is a love letter to Mexico, and that it is that second part of his motivation that places the film on a higher ground beyond merely being a touching dramedy about people desperately searching for meaning.
In the hands of a director without a personal connection to Mexico and an understanding of its relationship to its neighbor to the north, the country and its people could have been the victims of insensitive cheap mockery for the amusement of American audiences. Films depicting Americans traveling to exotic or remote locations tend to highlight the cultural divide between what’s considered modern and acceptable and what they see as archaic or less sophisticated lifestyles. Instead, Luna focuses on the similarities between the two countries on a human level by never alienating its two foreign protagonists and much less his homeland
By the same token, the two American leads are far from the images of Americans we often see in Mexican films and television. These are not the white and ignorant gringos that make racist remarks or patronize the locals and who are always outsmarted by crooked Mexicans. Ambrose and Eunice never show fear or mistrust towards the Mexican citizens they encounter along the road. There is never a comment referencing negative aspects of each country, but the film is rather permeated with mutual appreciation.
Mexico is not depicted as this overly colorful almost caricatured land that’s incomprehensible to Americans. Captured by cinematographer Damian Garcia ("Güeros"), astounding landscapes away from the cities are blended with everyday people in everyday neighborhoods selling food, working at hotels, hospitals, or simply lending these two people a hand without taking into account who they are or where they are from. Using Howie’s inability to return to the United States because he is not legally allowed, Luna makes a subtle commentary on immigration and the ridiculous perspective on borders that countries have which overlook real life beyond politics.
Although “Mr. Pig” leaves some elements and subplots unexplored, such as that of Ambrose's relationship with a Mexican woman in his youth, it also contains several morsels of wisdom related to our search for definite answers or certainty when it comes to interpersonal relationships. Eunice might never have that touching moment she yearns for with Ambrose, but in the quest for it, she might get something much better – his true self. Camilo Froideval quietly affecting score enhances the unfolding family drama on the road with his lighthearted melodies.
A film with such specifically calibrated cultural observations without exhaustive explanation of them could only come from a director with a vision forged on both sides of the dreaded border. Underneath its conventional premise, Luna has taken a step forward in his evolution as a writer-director with a compassionate film that, while not groundbreaking and with some loose pieces along the way in terms of exposition, uses its intimate qualities to speak of humanity at large based on undeniable similarities. If all films about Mexico and the United States could channel a slight portion of the tolerance and sympathy in "Mr. Pig," our distinct traits would be cause for admiration and not fear.
"Mr. Pig" premiered on January 26, 2016 at the Eccles Theater during the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Its international sales agent is Im Global/ Mundial and it is being represented for U.S. by Kevin Iwashina's Preferred Content.

Exclusive: With its world premiere on January 26 at the Sundance Film Festival, Mr. Pig is the third feature Diego Luna has directed – but it might be the one closest to his heart. "I spent five years working again with writer Augusto Mendoza to create a very personal story about fatherhood, our relationship with animals and Mexico," the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story actor told me about his film. "Mr. Pig is a love letter to our parents, and our take on the road trip story…...

Danny Glover and Maya Rudolph star in actor/director Diego Luna‘s new road movie "Mr. Pig," which takes place in Mexico, and follows a farmer (Glover) who travels from the U.S. to Mexico, joined by a pig whom he strikes up a friendship with. The film's official synopsis reads: On a mission to sell his last remaining prize hog and reunite with old friends, an aging farmer abandons his foreclosed farm and journeys to Mexico. After smuggling in the hog, his estranged daughter shows up, forcing them to face their past and embark on an adventurous road trip together. Promising a more lighthearted, comedic turn than his last film, “Cesar Chavez,” producer...

Now here's an interesting one, writer/director Ana Lily Amirpour, whose vampire feature A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night made waves last year, is setting up her next project and she has the support of Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures and she's lining up an interesting cast for what sounds like a fascinating feature. Described as a "cannibal love story", The Bad Batch as a post-apocalyptic tale set in a Texas wasteland where a community of cannibals reside. The shift from what you may expect from such a story is that this is a love story about a cannibal known as Miami Man (Jason Momoa) and his food. Joining Momoa in the picture are Jim Carrey, Keanu Reeves, Suki Waterhouse and Diego Luna with The Wrap reporting Waterhouse has landed the female lead, a character named Arlen. Luna will play a man named Jimmy. Reeves will play The Dream...

Im Global is forming partnerships that reach way beyond its original incarnation. When founder Stuart Ford launched the company in 2007, we had not realized the real meaning of the name Im Global.
What was known from its inception was that the company was one of the leading film financing, production, sales and distribution companies in the world. But when Reliance Entertainment, part of the Indian conglomerate Reliance Ada Group, acquired a majority shareholding in the company in May 2010, the word Global took on new meaning.
Not only did they claim to champion a wide variety of cinema, including mainstream commercial, art house, foreign language and genre fare with their offices in Los Angeles, London, and Mumbai, but their diversification has since expanded to include its newest partnership with Jason Blum’s Blumhouse and in Berlin 2013 its partnership with Canana (Who is Dayani Cristal?, Sin Nombre, Miss Bala), forming a 50-50 joint venture called Mundial.
Dedicated to international sales of Latin American cinema, Mundial will handle international sales for 8 to 10 Latin American titles per year. The company has picked up three films thus far: Mariana Chenillo's Paraiso, which begins shooting in January; Cannes winner Michael Rowe's new film Manto Acuifero; and Mr. Pig, Diego Luna's fourth work as a director.
Luna, along with fellow actor Gael Garcia Bernal and producer Pablo Cruz, are co-founders of Canana. Under the agreement, Mundial will handle Canana productions.
Mundial's board comprises Im Global CEO Stuart Ford, Canana executives Cruz and Julian Levy, and Im Global's president of international sales and distribution, Jonathan Deckter.
Canana is also part of ParticipantPanamerica, a brilliant production partnership Participant, teaming together Canana,
Chile’s Fabula (Gloria, Young and Wild) of the fabulous Lorrain brothers who made No (with Participant) as well as Sebastian Silva’s best films to date, Colombia’s Dynamo (Undertow, The Hidden Face).
Aside from these two new startup joint ventures, there are other arms:
Im Global Opus: Mainstream, commercial cinema targeted at the multiplex audience.
Im Global Acclaim: Critically acclaimed arthouse and specialty cinema.
Im Global Anthem: The best of non-English language cinema from around the world.
Im Global Octane: Branded genre fare.
Im Apsara: A rights acquisition and distribution vehicle that serves the rapidly evolving Asian markets.
In addition there is the 3rd joint venture, Automatik: A production and financing joint venture with E1 Entertainment focused on films in the $5 million - $15 million range.
When I think of Stuart Ford now, I understand the I Am Global moniker! Good work!!
