Women’s History Month may be over, but that doesn’t mean that women aren’t leading many of Hulu’s top picks for April. The month begins with the premiere of Vanderpump Villa, a Hulu Original reality series that follows Lisa Vanderpump and the hand-selected staff members employed at her lavish French estate, Chateau Rosabelle. This next chapter in the Vanderpump saga is sure to be full of drama, decadence, and debauchery as the staff caters to Vanderpump, her wealthy guests, and their own desires.
Hulu Original Under the Bridge, based on the 1997 true-crime novel of the same name, also premieres this month. This limited series follows the investigation of Reena Virk’s disappearance –the fourteen-year-old left to meet some friends and never returned home. Starring Riley Keough and Academy Award nominee Lily Gladstone, Under the Bridge has all the makings of a true-crime hit. Rounding out this month,...

If you haven’t taken the leap to bundle Disney+ and Hulu, it might be time. Streaming is only getting more expensive and competitive, and the enticing bundle (which also includes ESPN) might be a version of cable TV, but it’s also just cost efficient. Disney+ and Hulu are so intertwined that their monthly listing updates come in the same email — and as such, we decided to compile them here for you in the same list.
Whether you have Disney+ or Hulu, or both (and the IndieWire staff has weighed on our favorites), each has its benefits. Disney has the family-friendly titles, the Star Wars and Marvel (new episodes of “The Bad Batch” and “X-Men: 97” continue through April), while Hulu is the place to catch FX originals and network episodes. Both streamers have the rights to distribute National Geographic titles, which are well worth exploring along with the rest of the library.

The works of author Patricia Highsmith have inspired such films as Strangers on a Train, Purple Noon, Enough Rope, The American Friend, Tell Her That I Love Her, The Glass Cell, a couple different versions of Deep Water, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Ripley’s Game, Ripley Under Ground, The Cry of the Owl, The Two Faces of January, Carol, and A Kind of Murder, among others. Her stories have also served as the basis for a lot of television, including an upcoming Showtime mini-series titled Ripley. Now, Deadline reports that Shailene Woodley (The Spectacular Now) has signed on to star in a film about Highsmith’s life – but this biopic is said to “reimagine the author’s life as a horror movie”. The title is The Murderous Miss Highsmith, and Woodley is being joined in the cast by Cara Delevingne (Carnival Row) and Noémie Merlant (Portrait of a Lady on Fire).

If January sets the tone for any streamer’s year then 2023 is certainly going to be the Year of True Crime on Hulu. That’s right, Hulu’s list of new releases for January 2023 is highlight by several new true crime docuseries (and one charmingly goofy animated hero).
The true crime docuseries fest gets started with Death in the Dorms on Jan. 5. That will be followed by How I Caught My Killer on Jan. 12, and Web of Death on Jan. 19. The first is a six-episode series that will follow the real life case of murders at UCLA, while the latter two will both present several different stories.
It’s not just all true crime in January for Hulu. Jan. 9 sees the arrival of Koala Man, an animated series that envisions an Australian crime fighter of the same name. Also premiering is season 2 of How I Met Your Mather (Jan. 24) and superhero drama Extraordinary (Jan.

Exclusive: Vincent Kartheiser is a major new cast addition to Season 3 of the DC series Titans, which is currently airing on HBO Max. But the Mad Men alum, who plays the villain Scarecrow, is not on the poster for the new season and was not actively involved in publicity efforts for the new season after his stint on the show triggered at least two complaints and two internal investigations by Titans studio Warner Bros Television, I have learned. The studio declined comment.
The allegations, which are believed to have included disruptive, juvenile behavior and inappropriate comments, were investigated by Wbtv’s Labor Relations department, which interviewed the relevant parties. The investigations were conducted remotely because of Covid protocols that did not allow for Burbank-based investigators to visit the series’ Toronto set.

At first glance, this melodramatic noir is a gorgeous period picture, echoing the vintage visuals of Tom Ford’s “A Single Man” and Todd Haynes’ “Far From Heaven” and “Carol.” Given this movie’s origins as a Patricia Highsmith novel like Haynes’ most recent work, that early impression initially seems merited. Unfortunately, as “A Kind of Murder” progresses, it becomes clear that it resembles those films in look only.

Last year, Todd Haynes’ “Carol,” based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 novel “The Price of Salt,” wracked up critical and commercial acclaim, making it another in a long line of Highsmith adaptations that have won over critics and audiences. Now, a new Highsmith adaptation “A Kind of Murder,” based on her 1954 novel “The Blunderer,” will be released next week. The film stars Patrick Wilson as Walter Stackhouse, a successful architect married to the beautiful Clara (Jessica Biel) in 1960s New York. Stuck in an unhappy marriage, Stackhouse becomes obsessed with an unsolved murder of a rare bookstore owner (Eddie Marsen) as a distraction, but when Clara goes missing after discovering his affair, he becomes the prime suspect and must evade a clever killer and an overambitious detective. "What's the difference between wishing someone dead and actually doing something about it?" Magnolia Pictures has debuted an official trailer for the indie thriller A Kind of Murder, a vintage murder mystery set in 1960s New York. Jessica Biel and Patrick Wilson star as a married couple with personal problems living in NYC. Walter becomes obsessed with an unsolved murder that gets him into all kinds of other trouble. The cast includes Haley Bennett, Vincent Kartheiser, Eddie Marsan, Corrie Danieley and Radek Lord. I'm not sure where this film came from - this was the first time I'd heard about it before. You can thank Patricia Highsmith for providing the source material for thrillers such as “The Talented Mr. Ripley” and “Strangers On A Train,” and the author’s work is once again serving as inspiration, this time for “A Kind Of Murder.” And it’s the kind of thorny thriller you’d expect from the masterful Highsmith.
Starring Jessica Biel, Patrick Wilson, Haley Bennett, Eddie Marsan and Vincent Kartheiser, the film follows an architect obsessed with murder and having an affair, who gets mixed up with a killer and an intensely curious detective.

Patricia Highsmith’s novels have been the go-to for complex, urbane thrillers since Alfred Hitchcock made the first Strangers on a Train adaptation in 1951. A Kind of Murder is the latest in the Highsmith subgenre – it’s based on the novel The Blunderer from 1954, and directed by Andy Goddard from a screenplay by Susan Boyd.
The film tells the story of Walter Stackhouse (Patrick Wilson), a successful architect living in the suburbs of New York City with his real-estate agent wife Clara (Jessica Biel). But, as with all Highsmith’s works, things are not well in the paradise of American suburbia. Clara is a neurotic with overtones of paranoia and her unwillingness to seek help has set her husband on edge and her marriage on the rocks.
Then comes the news of a murder of a woman at a roadside café near Saratoga Springs, with the husband Kimmel (Eddie Marsan) as the prime suspect.

Climbing up the ranks with mostly writing and directing television gigs (this includes a handful of “Downton Abbey” episodes), Andy Goddard flew under the radar with the release of this debut film, a set in the 50’s biopic item featuring Elijah Wood called Set Fire to the Stars (read our review) which had a ’14 festival release and was shown in the U.S. this past summer. With Jessica Biel, Patrick Wilson, Haley Bennett, Vincent Kartheiser and Eddie Marsan onboard, his sophomore film will undoubtedly gain a lot more traction. As announced last May, Patrick Wilson and Jessica Biel are about to star in an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's murder mystery novel The Blunderer. Now, with shooting just underway, it's been revealed that they've been joined by Eddie Marsan. Haley Bennett is also in the cast of the film, under the watchful eye of director Andy Goddard (Set Fire To The Stars). The film is actually currently without a title, but we'll stick with The Blunderer until a replacement turns up. Highsmith's novel was first published in 1953, in between Strangers On A Train and The Talented Mr. Ripley. It involves successful architect Walter Stackhouse (Wilson), who's struggling in his marriage to the neurotic Clara (Biel) and finds his amorous attentions turning to music teacher Ellie. As his personal life unravels in various ways, he becomes obsessed with an unsolved murder. Digging deeper into the case, he comes to the...

While Jessica Biel can't seem to escape the recent pregnancy rumors, she did managed to leave Tinsletown to film an upcoming project in Cincinnati. The possibly expectant star was seen on the set of The Blunderer over the weekend and made sure to stay bundled up in the chilly temperatures. Justin Timberlake's leading lady was seen staying warm in a puffer coat and Ugg boots in between scenes, all the while wearing a baby pink A-line dress for her character. And while there's certainly no sign of a baby bump, chances are that the poofy frock would cover up her figure anyway. After all, that's just basic movie-making magic, right? Neither Biel nor Timberlake have addressed the...

Patricia Highsmith, that doyenne of an immediately recognizable fictional world in which murderers get away with it, seems to be enjoying a moment. This year saw the rather bloodless screen adaptation of The Two Faces of January come and go; next we'll get Todd Haynes' Carol, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, based on Highsmith's The Price of Salt, while a film version of The Blunderer is also in the works. Highsmith's popularity is an oddity, if an encouraging one, in a Hollywood where a cynic might expect her fondness for moral equivalence to be anathema. Switzerland, the new two-hander from

We're getting three starry Patricia Highsmith adaptations in the next year or so at the cinemas. First up is The Two Faces of January (Viggo, Kiki & Oscar Isaac) and then Carol (Cate, Rooney & Sarah Paulson).
The latest to ready itself for the cameras is The Blunderer. The cast will include Patrick Wilson, Jessica Biel, Imogene Poots and Toby Jones.
Highsmith adaptations are nothing new for the cinema and soon there will be little left to adapt.
Walter Stackhouse (Wilson) is a successful architect married to the beautiful Clara (Biel) and leading a charmed and perfect life. But his fascination with an unsolved murder leads him into a spiral of chaos as he is forced to play cat-and-mouse with a clever killer (Jones) and an over-ambitious detective. Walter's obsession, his lies and his lust for another woman (Poots) will collide in a crush of guilt, innocence and, ultimately, fate.

It’s a casting-o-rama Friday. With Cannes around the corner and the entire industry getting together for their quarterly wheeling and dealing, it means a lot of pacts are being made. Perhaps the most interesting is the adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel ‘The Blunderer.” She is obviously the writer of the Talented Mr. Ripley series and this non-Ripley-centered psychological thriller will star Patrick Wilson, Jessica Biel, Toby Jones and Imogen Poots. Andy Goddard will direct. [Deadline] Former “Downton Abbey” star Dan Stevens and “Boardwalk Empire” lead Michael Pitt are on the rise. They’ll both star alongside John Travolta in the drama, “Criminal Activities.” Actor Jackie Earle Haley will make his directing debut and the film centers on four friends who make a risky investment together that puts them in trouble with the mob. Pitt fell off their for a couple years, but between “Boardwalk Empire” and roles in “I Origins” and other indies,...
