Last Episode’S Review: Can We Move Past The Election Yet?
Last night’s “Saturday Night Live” was a solid middle-of-the-road episode, one you wouldn’t mind falling asleep to on Netflix next year. But we don’t need that from “SNL.” We need more. 7 weeks away from the inauguration of President-elect Trump, we need strong, incisive political commentary. It’s essential. We need “SNL” to stand up and say something, and not just in a cold open. (The Leonard Cohen one from a few weeks ago was divisive, but at least it took a stance.) Trump himself has made it abundantly clear that he’s watching, so what is “SNL” waiting for?
Host: Emma Stone
Emma Stone was reliably great. She’s charming, she’s talented, and she’s a trained stage actress, which makes her “SNL” performances particularly good. Stone is seemingly impossible to dislike, which makes her...

Read the previous part in this series, Doctor Who: the film careers of Patrick Troughton and Tom Baker, here.
In March 1981, as he made his Doctor Who debut, Peter Davison was already one the best known faces on British television. Not only was he the star of both a BBC and an ITV sitcom - Sink Or Swim and Holding The Fort - but as the young and slightly reckless Tristan Farnon in All Creatures Great And Small, about the often humorous cases of Yorkshire vet James Herriot and his colleagues, he had cemented his stardom. The Redemption of Henry Myers is the latest movie from the former presidential hopeful's film company EchoLight Studios
It looks to have all the traditional ingredients of a truly rootin' tootin' western, including bank robberies, gunfights and murderous outlaws out for revenge. But The Redemption of Henry Myers, the new movie from former Us presidential wannabe Rick Santorum, also throws something fresh into the mix: Jesus.
The evangelical tale, which debuted on the Hallmark Movie Channel in the Us on Sunday, is the latest Christian-oriented movie from Santorum's film production company EchoLight Studios. It centres on a dark-hearted outlaw, who finds himself being hunted by his former partners in crime after absconding from an abortive bank robbery with a bag full of swag.
Henry takes a bullet for his pains, but finds himself nursed back to health by a God-fearing widow and her children. The intrigue deepens when the identity...

Young-adult adaptation Divergent got off to a strong start yesterday, and is now on pace for an opening weekend north of $50 million. Meanwhile, Christian drama God's Not Dead is shaping up to be a surprise box office hit. Playing at 3,936 locations, Divergent opened to an estimated $22.8 million on Friday. That includes $4.9 million from late Thursday shows. While that opening day figure is nowhere close to Twilight ($36 million) or The Hunger Games ($67.3 million), it's still one of the best young-adult debuts ever.If Divergent plays like The Hunger Games, it will wind up with around $52 million for the weekend. That seems likely, given the demographic breakdown: the movie attracted more men than expected (41 percent), and was split evenly between those over and under 25 years of age. Combine that with an "A" CinemaScore, and Divergent may not be as frontloaded as its genre and poor reviews suggested.Opening at 3,194 theaters, Muppets Most Wanted disappointed with $4.7 million.

The Britain's Got Talent star is to play a singing lighthouse keeper in the project, reports The Sun.
Boyle's agent told the publication: "She's very excited."
The drama has been given the working title Diva and focuses on a girl from the Channel Islands who dreams of stardom.
Both ITV and America's ABC are said to have expressed an interest in the John Stephenson-directed show, which filmed a pilot episode in Edinburgh last month.
Stephenson also helmed Boyle's movie debut The Christmas Candle last year.
The singer appeared as church warden's wife Eleanor Hopewell in the film, which also starred Les Miserables actress Samantha Barks.
Boyle said last year that Meryl Streep had been approached to play her in a planned biopic about the 52-year-old.

Since Anne Hathaway landed her Oscar, every movie star's been threatening to break into song
Anne Hathaway
Les Misérables
Hathaway's heart-rending portrayal of Susan Boyle won her the Oscar for most severe haircut and opened the floodgates for a year of thespian ballad-belting. Ever the trendsetter, she dispensed with the usual X Factor trappings and opted for a Sinéad O'Connor-meets-the-French-revolution theme. Work it all the way to the workhouse, girl!
Peter Mullan
Sunshine On Leith
Who knew? The gruff Scot's sandpaper-rough, booze-slurred rendition of the Proclaimers' Oh Jean suggests he has a Christmas album in him at the very least. But, really, someone needs to whip up a Glasgow-set musical for him built around Leonard Cohen's back catalogue. First We'll Take Buchanan?

Peter Jackson's second Hobbit outing hairily hotfoots it to the top, while Frozen does well enough to be solid until January
• Us box office: The Hobbit leaves Frozen out in the cold
• The Hobbit – interviews with Martin Freeman, Evangeline Lilly and Benedict Cumberbatch
The winner
Exactly a year ago, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opened in the UK with £9.51m, plus £2.1m in previews. Many critics carped that the film didn't live up to Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, and sounded a note of scepticism over the innovative 48 frames-per-second projection. Still, audiences continued to embrace the film, and a final gross of £52.33m represented a healthy 5.5 multiple of the opening number – a relatively high ratio for a Hollywood blockbuster.
Now sequel The Desolation of Smaug arrives with a very similar £9.32m, slightly down on the original. A better Metacritic score of 66/100 (as opposed to 58/100 for Unexpected...

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug (12A)
(Peter Jackson, 2013, Us/Nz) Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Benedict Cumberbatch. 161 mins
If the first Hobbit movie felt padded out, that didn't seem to put anyone off: its global box-office take was more than $1bn. But now all that protracted set-up is out of the way this middle section hits the ground running and barely lets up, as Freeman and his dwarves hack their way through a theme park's worth of action adventures to close in on the Lonely Mountain. It's a giddy ride, for sure, but we also get a fuller sense of Middle Earth's landscape and inhabitants. Oh yes, and there's a dragon…

Susan Boyle says she has been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism - and feels relief at finally having the right label for her condition. Boyle told the Observer newspaper that she saw a specialist a year ago, who told her she had Asperger's and an above-average Iq. Boyle, 52, had learning difficulties as a child, which she was told were the result of brain damage from oxygen deprivation at birth. She struggled in school and was bullied by other children. "I have always known that I have had an unfair label put upon me," Boyle said in the interview,...

Just as its East German teen subjects took skateboarding behind the Iron Curtain, so this "documentary" smuggles faked footage into its true 1980s history. The result is a fascinating parallel pop-cultural history with a moving (but imaginary) human centre. Working out what's true and what's not only adds to the fun.

Stubborn old Dern and son take a quixotic road trip back into family, and American, history.

The Christmas Candle, which was produced by the Christian-themed studio that Santorum heads, fails to fly
• News: Rick Santorum calls Hollywood 'the devil's playground'
The power of prayer has failed to save The Christmas Candle, the new release from Rick Santorum's faith based film studio, EchoLight.
The Christmas Candle, set in the fictional English village of Gladbury and billed as "a timeless holiday film for the entire family", attracted widespread critical scorn as well as dismal box-office results, having grossed just over $1.6m (£988,000) after two weeks on release.
The bad reviews were perhaps predictable, with the New York Daily News saying: "This odd Dickens-meets-Sunday-school movie is as artless as the setup is muddled", while the New York Post judged: "This throwback, made-for-tv-style film takes the easy way out in a cheesy climax, but its resolute quaintness may appeal to the kind of viewers who regard electricity as disturbingly newfangled.

As expected, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire attracted nearly unprecedented crowds to movie theaters this weekend. The highly-anticipated sequel opened to $158.1 million, which is the best opening ever in the month of November. It's also the sixth-biggest opening on record, and ranks third all-time among 2D-only movies.Catching Fire's $158.1 million opening is a bit above the original Hunger Games, which surprised many when it opened over $152 million last March. It's also ahead of the three Twilight sequels that opened at the same time in November*all three wound up between $138.1 million and $142.8 million. Catching Fire's debut ranks behind The Avengers, Iron Man 3 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, all of which had the added benefit of 3D ticket pricing. On Sunday, Lionsgate's estimate for the movie was $161.1 million, which would have set a new 2D-only record. When actuals were tallied, though, Catching Fire fell a...

Rick Santorum and Susan Boyle’s holiday movie “The Christmas Candle” opened in theaters on Friday but with a “Hunger Games” sequel dominating the box office, the faith-based film failed to catch fire with audiences, or critics for that matter. Santorum, former Republican presidential nominee, is the CEO of EchoLight Studios, which distributed “Christmas Candle.” The story is set in 1890 in an English village where a candle grants one wish every 25 years at Christmas time. With electricity coming, the Christmas Candle legend could end forever. Boyle makes her feature film debut as the church warden’s wife. Also Read: Rick Santorum Joins the Movie.

Friday Update: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opened to a massive $70.5 million on Friday, which is a bit ahead of the first movie's $67.3 million opening day. Overall, it ranks seventh all-time. For the weekend, it's now guaranteed to earn at least $145 million, and could make it as high as $160 million.Forecast: This weekend, Katniss Everdeen steps back in to the box office arena with Catching Fire, the sequel to 2012 sensation The Hunger Games. With a more aggressive marketing campaign and an expanded fanbase, it's practically a foregone conclusion at this point that Catching Fire will top the original's $152 million opening*though it's unclear if it's even possible to go much higher.Ahead of the release of the first movie, it already seemed like Suzanne Collins' young-adult book franchise was on track to become as big as Twilight or Harry Potter. Still, The Hunger Games exceeded sky-high expectations when it opened to $152.5 million,...

Winner Of The Week: The Best Man Holiday. Sure, it opened in second place and failed to dethrone Thor: The Dark World, but no one expected it to top the chart. Still, the romantic dramedy sequel far outperformed expectations. After all, it's the sequel to a movie that came out 14 years ago and did only $34 million in total business back then (about $54 million at today's prices). But this weekend, Holiday opened with an estimated $30.6 million, or nearly as much in three days as The Best Man earned during its whole run.

Former senator claims his new film needs the support of Christians to see off satanic influence in movies
Former senator and presidential candidate Rick Santorum called the film industry "the devil's playground" as he sought to promote his own film, The Christmas Candle.
Santorum, Republican senator for Pennsylvania between 1995 and 2007 attempted to gain the presidential nomination in 2012 but was defeated by Mitt Romney. He is now CEO of EchoLight Studios, who specifically aim to make family-oriented faith films, and The Christmas Candle, starring Clash of the Titans' Hans Matheson, is their latest release.
Santorum, a devout Catholic, was speaking on the Christian-oriented Trinity Broadcasting Network about the film, and said: "This is a tough business, this is something that we're stepping out ... and the devil, for a long, long time, has had this, these screens, for his playground. No! Somebody mentioned something that the BBC is running on the weekend when it goes out. Big Finish have done us proud, they're coming out with something really exciting. The BBC, we've heard nothing though.

So, remember when it was announced last fall that a biopic on reality TV sensation Susan Boyle was in the works? Well, it looks like she's going to star in a movie first. The singer is set to make her feature film debut alongside "Les Miserables" star Samantha Barks in “The Christmas Candle," the plot of which sounds about a corny as the title. Based on the Max Lucado novella, the period film concerns the titular Christmas candle, and what happens when it goes missing. Of course, a holiday miracle and various human contrivances will make sure it's discovered again. A pretty decent cast has been rounded up for this one, including Hans Matheson (the non-musical 1998 “Les Miserables”), Lesley Manville (“Another Year”), John Hannah (“The Mummy”), James Cosmo (“Game of Thrones”), Sylvester McCoy (“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”) and Barbara Flynn (“Miss Potter”). John Stephenson is directing the movie, which is currently shooting,...
