George Martin’s low fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire blew up with the premiere of HBO’s Game of Thrones, but that sudden popularity had a curious side effect. The author completely stopped releasing new books in the main continuity, focusing entirely on prequels, spin-offs, adaptations, and other projects… For 13 years now.
The Winds of Winter has been sitting on Martin’s desk for so long that most fans already gave up all hope of ever seeing that book. But that’s where they were wrong!
Grrm Shared The Winds of Winter Release Window
In the past many years, whatever George Martin was doing, he was always getting angry comments about The Winds of Winter. Many even decided that he’d opted for simply dropping ASoIaF after seeing the massive backlash the Game of Thrones’ finale caused — but apparently, the author has actually been writing all this time.

Network executives once came to the upfronts on a mission to get advertisers excited about a handful of new series coming in the fall. This year, TV’s big players took a T-shirt cannon approach.
Every one of the major presentations during the May 13-15 sprint in midtown Manhattan — NBCUniversal, Fox, Disney, Amazon, Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix — emphasized the breadth of the company’s content offerings. Call it the everything-everywhere-all-at-once strategy for the streaming age.
As always, common themes emerged across the week. “Connections” was the buzziest of buzzwords used by executives pitching their hearts out from the stage. Without question, the song of Upfronts ’24, the one heard at most if not all events, was Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ’Em.”
After sorting through the firehose of shows and spin, here are a few trends that stood out this year.
1) Star-Power Surge
Last year, the writers strike kept boldface names from appearing at the upfronts.

Some breaking news from Westeros: The Game of Thrones prequel series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has added a major talent from Black Mirror to serve as its debut season’s lead director, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Owen Harris has boarded the HBO drama as an executive producer and will also direct the first three episodes, establishing the directorial vision for the series. Harris is best known for helming two of Black Mirror‘s finest episodes — “Be Right Back” and the widely acclaimed “San Junipero.”
In addition, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms‘ episode count has now been revealed: The first season will be six episodes, making for a tighter opener than the 10-episode first seasons of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. The run time seems appropriate given Knight is an adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s 160-page novella The Hedge Knight rather than one of his 900-page epic novels.

Despite the widely despised series finale of "Game of Thrones" -- which, for the record, we at /Film didn't hate nearly as much as the rest of the world seemed to at the time -- the show was an immense cultural juggernaut for HBO, and in the risk-averse television landscape, it's only natural that other channels and streamers saw that show's success and wanted to replicate it for themselves. Prime Video spend ungodly amounts of money on the rights to a TV show set in "The Lord of the Rings" universe, Netflix dumped a bunch of money into the forgotten "Marco Polo," and even History got into the mix with "Vikings."
FX, meanwhile, decided to greenlight "Shogun," a tremendously expensive-looking adaptation of James Clavell's 1975 novel (which was previously adapted into an ultra-popular miniseries in the '80s). After enduring production delays due to the pandemic and finally premiering this February,...

HBO has officially canceled its Jon Snow sequel project. Good news for fans of the Stark bastard? No. Good news for Game of Thrones fans? Yes.
Hear us out.
It Would Have Been A Hit
It's pretty much guaranteed that viewers would have tuned in to a Jon Snow sequel. Because the show would have taken place directly after the events of GoT season 8, it had all of the fan-bait that usually draws viewers: the comfort of well-known characters, the promise of cameos from old favorites, and a backstory we're all familiar with.
Heck, I hated the GoT finale as much as anyone else, and I still know I would have tuned in for at least the pilot of a Jon Snow series. I mean, does he stay in the North? How does he get over the death of his aunt/lover? Does he still know nothing?
But after two years of development,...

The world of Game of Thrones has always been an eventful one, irrespective of the fate that befalls the characters and the gruesome incidents that traumatize the viewers. But even for the audience who comes from a background of having read A Song of Ice and Fire, the HBO series could get a little daunting due to the nature of its transgressions from the original text.

Years later, the author, who noticed one such transgression, himself let his wrath be known for a line that was crossed by the actions of his own characters. In one radical change instituted by the creators of the HBO show, an incident that was fairly harmless in the books was transformed into a horrific plot device.

Brian Helgeland is a popular name in the industry for his works in films like Mystic River and L.A. Confidential. The latter even blessed him with an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. The renowned screenwriter and producer was near to having his Game of Thrones spin-off series. However, the Ten Thousand Ships series never got a green light from HBO.

The idea of Brian Helgeland’s Ten Thousand Ships was planned to be based on the mythological story of Moses. The structure and tonality of the story would have been very different from the main Game of Thrones series. Although Helgeland has stated that his script is still there and HBO can pick it if they want, it is highly unlikely due to the present political milieu of the world.

Brian Helgeland’s illustrious Hollywood career includes winning an Oscar for writing “L.A Confidential,” directing Heath Ledger’s beloved 2001 comedy “A Knight’s Tale” and scripting films such as “Man on Fire” and “Mystic River.” It also could’ve included a “Game of Thrones” spinoff series had HBO moved forward on his pitch, which was titled “Ten Thousand Ships” and centered on Queen Nymeria.
“It came out great, but I think they felt the period of my show was too far removed from the pillars of the original,” Helgeland recently told Inverse about his spinoff. “That’s why it hasn’t been picked up yet, but nothing is ever dead. My script was based on Queen Nymeria and this little blurb about her that was in a Westeros encyclopedia.”

Game of Thrones has always been a franchise that focuses on multiple stories at once and does not spoon-feed information to its audience. Leaving certain parts of the story open to interpretation, there have been many beautiful and tragic stories that the entire fandom agrees on. However, when so much is left open-ended, audiences are left astray and move too far away from the truth.

This week, HBO announced the main cast members for "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight," which is an upcoming TV adaptation of author George R.R. Martin's Dunk and Egg stories. While "Game of Thrones" and "House of the Dragon" are about ancient families vying for power, with lots of dragons and palace intrigue and backstabbing (both metaphorical and literal!), this show will take place about a hundred years before the events of "Game of Thrones" and be a much smaller stakes tale about a good-intentioned but somewhat bumbling knight named Ser Duncan the Tall and his very young squire nicknamed Egg as they wander around Westeros getting into adventures.

HBO is still in the “Game of Thrones” business, just not with Jon Snow. One of the earliest spinoffs from the hit fantasy drama was set to be about Kit Harington’s young leader, but the actor told ScreenRant that this project is not actively in development.
“Currently, it’s off the table, because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough,” he said while promoting Rod Blackhurst’s “Blood for Dust,” releasing April 19. “So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. Kit Harington announced in a new interview with ScreenRant while promoting his movie “Blood for Dust” that his “Game of Thrones” spinoff centered around Jon Show is “off the table” and no longer in development at HBO. The network declined to comment. News broke in June 2022 that Harington was set to return to his iconic “Thrones” role, which earned him two Emmy nominations (one for supporting actor and another for lead actor in a drama series).
“It was Kit Harrington who brought the idea to us,” author George R.R. Martin later confirmed in a blog post. “I cannot tell you the names of the writers/showrunners, since that has not been cleared for release yet but Kit brought them in too, his own team, and they are terrific.”
Now talking to ScreenRant, Harington admitted the team “couldn’t find the right story to tell” so the project is not in active development anymore.

With first successful Game Of Thrones prequel House Of The Dragon roaring back to our screens for a second season this June, there is some forward movement on another Westeros-set series. Although many critics were skeptical of "House of the Dragon," arguing that the finale of "Game of Thrones" was so horrendous that it may have killed any audience interest in another TV show set in the same universe, the 2022 spinoff's first season was a pretty clear success. It was so good, in fact, that it's now paved the way for a new spinoff series, once again set in Westeros during the Targaryens' reign.
That's right: "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight," which was officially greenlit by HBO in 2023, has now cast the largely unknown actor Peter Claffey as the young knight Dunk, plus the 9-year-old Dexter Sol Ansell as the pre-pubescent Egg. George R.R. Martin has introduced the world to a lore that people will undoubtedly be grateful for in the years to come. The tremendous success of Game of Thrones globally has paved the way for the birth of numerous other shows and spin-offs. However, the author recently revealed why he isn’t jumping on the bandwagon of showrunners spawned from his novels. It’s because he’s currently engaged in writing a new book! Exciting stuff indeed.

House of the Dragon fans have been anxiously awaiting word on the release of season 2 of the fantasy series. It was previously reported that the series would debut sometime this summer, but that date has just been narrowed down a little more.
Warner Bros. Discovery streaming and gaming chief J.B. Perrette revealed (via Variety) that House of the Dragon season 2 will premiere on HBO in June but didn’t specify an exact date. The first season was a surprisingly big success for HBO, and I only say “surprisingly” because I honestly wasn’t sure if fans would be willing to return to Westeros after the disappointment following the Games of Thrones finale. Will the second season be able to keep the momentum going? HBO certainly hopes so, as they’re said to be actively developing seasons 3 and 4 of the series.

HBO’s Game of Thrones is still considered one of the greatest TV shows ever made, despite the divisive final season. Everyone would wait for a new season to drop and eagerly count the days till next week as the episodes dropped weekly. After a fabulous and complex narrative till season 7, season 8 infamously dropped the ball and ended the series on a sour note.

Warner Bros. Discovery is looking to ride on the success of Game of Thrones, with more spinoff projects planned in the franchise. HBO ordered a prequel series, titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, in April 2023. It will be the third project in the World of Westeros. New reports from the studio suggest that the project will premiere in late 2025. However, fans are skeptical about the project at this stage.

If you are waiting for more Game of Thrones-related drama, have no fear; David Zaslav is ready to give an update about The Hedge Knight, a spin-off set in George R. R. Martin‘s land of dragons, treachery, and alarming orgies. The show’s full title is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, though I’m sure they’ll shorten it before the spin-off hits the airwaves.
“[Creator and executive producer] George R.R. Martin is in pre production for the new spin off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which will premiere in late 2025 on Max,” said Warner Bros. Discovery CEO and subject of many memes, David Zaslav.
The 2025 timeline is curious, considering the sophomore season of House of the Dragon arrives this summer. If House of the Dragon is this year, and The Hedge Knight drops in 2025, does HBO plan to alternate years between series? That’s a lot of Game of Thrones.

After hitting the brakes due to last year's actors' and writers' strikes, "The Hedge Knight" is back on track, with the latest "Game of Thrones" spin-off series getting a release window. The show was announced just a year ago with the title "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight".
In case you aren't aware of the intricate history of George R. R. Martin's Westeros, "The Hedge Knight" is based on Martin's "Tales of Dunk and Egg" novellas. The novellas detail Dunk's attempts at becoming a respectable knight and even finding love. For those with trepidations of "The Hedge Knight...

Dunk and Egg keep journeying closer to their HBO debut.
On Friday, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav gave an update on the next Game of Thrones spin-off series: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight (a title that seems destined to be changed to something that doesn’t have “Knight” twice).
“[Creator and executive producer] George R.R. Martin is in pre production for the new spin off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which will premiere in late 2025 on Max,” Zaslav said.
The show is expected to begin production sometime this year.
Given that House of the Dragon is launching its second season this year (likely sometime this summer), the Knight of the Seven Kingdoms date next year raises the possibility of HBO settling into a flow of having a Thrones drama on each year (assuming both shows can turn around their next seasons within two years).

HBO is returning to Westeros!
The network that made history with Game of Thrones and experienced comparatively moderate success with the spinoff House of the Dragon is now developing a third series based in the medieval fantasy world of author George R.R. Martin.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed this week that HBO has greenlit a project with the reported working title of Aegon's Conquest.
The story of the first Aegon Targaryen will be familiar to diehard GoT fans.
(Although those who watched the first two series more casually can be forgiven if that name no longer rings a bell. There's an awful lot of lore in this franchise!)
Basically, Aegon I is the guy who began the process of uniting the Seven Kingdoms when he made a dragon-back flight from Old Valyria with his sister-wives Rhaenys and Viseyna.
Aptly known as Aegon the Conqueror, this founder of the Targaryen dynasty is frequently name-dropped by other characters,...

THR reports that HBO is developing yet another Game of Thrones prequel series. This one will be a prequel to House of the Dragon and tell the story of Aegon Targaryen’s brutal conquest of Westeros.
Mattson Tomlin, who co-wrote The Batman Part II with Matt Reeves, is set to pen the Game of Thrones prequel. Aegon Targaryen, who has been mentioned frequently in the franchise, conquered Westeros with his sister wives, Rhaenys and Visenya, and three dragons. With the exception of Dorne, Aegon took control of the continent within just two years, later founding the city of King’s Landing, constructing the Red Keep, and forging the Iron Throne from the swords of his defeated enemies. His descendants would go on to rule for centuries.

The proposed series — which is only in the very early stages of development at this time — would take place about a century before HBO’s current prequel House of the Dragon (which itself is set 200 years prior to Game of Thrones) and tell the tale of King Aegon I Targaryen, who was the very first to...

‘Game of Thrones’ Aegon’s Conquest Spinoff in the Works From ‘The Batman Part II’ Writer (Exclusive)
HBO is developing another Game of Thrones spinoff series.
The company is actively heating up its long-in-discussion Aegon’s Conquest idea.
HBO is partnering with Mattson Tomlin, an in-demand scribe who did uncredited work on Matt Reeve’s The Batman and is co-writing its upcoming sequel, The Batman Part II. He also wrote the Keanu Reeves action comic adaptation Brzrkr and an animated Terminator series which he is also showrunning for Netflix.
Aegon’s Conquest is basically a direct prequel to the hit House of the Dragon, telling the story of the Targaryen’s bloody and brutal conquest of Westeros. The story follows the invader Aegon Targaryen, who conquered the continent of Westeros with his sister wives, Rhaenys and Visenya, and their dragons. Aegon successfully unified six of the Seven Kingdoms in just two years, with only Dorne able to successfully resist.

George R. R. Martin has no time for toxic fandoms.
The “Game of Thrones” franchise creator published a blog post titled “Dark Days” that included a banner reading “current mood: depressed.” Martin reflected on the past year as he ushered in 2024.
“This year, though, as I reflected on the year we had just lived through, I found I had no appetite for living through any of that again,” Martin said. “2023 was a nightmare of a year, for the world and the nation and for me and mine, both professionally and personally. I am very glad that it is over. Unfortunately, so far 2024 looks to be even worse.”
He continued, “Well, I take solace where I can. In chocolate thrones, if nowhere else. In books. In films and television shows…though even there, toxicity is growing. It used to be fun talking about our favorite books and films, and having spirited...

HBO’s Game of Thrones universe is expanding once again. Following the success of ‘House of the Dragon,’ a new spinoff titled ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight’ is gearing up to start filming in 2024. This news comes straight from HBO’s Casey Bloys. While it was initially expected to begin production earlier, the team is still working on casting and writing.
The new series dives into George R. R. Martin’s ‘Tales of Dunk and Egg‘, set about a century before the events of Game of Thrones. It will explore the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg. The show plans to adapt the three novellas: ‘The Hedge Knight’, ‘The Sworn Sword’, and ‘The Mystery Knight’. HBO’s Francesca Orsi mentioned that the show’s lack of dragons means quicker production, thanks to fewer visual effects.
HBO has big plans for this series.
