There’s a moment in the first episode of Everybody’s in L.A., John Mulaney’s delightfully chaotic live Netflix special, in which Mulaney asks special guest Jerry Seinfeld why he decided to make his Pop-Tarts origin movie Unfrosted (which was released on — you guessed it — Netflix the same day Mulaney’s special aired, because there’s nothing more on-brand for a special about Los Angeles culture than cross-promotional synergy) .
“I don’t know. Because they let me,” Seinfeld responds, referring to Netflix. “Probably the same reason why you’re doing this.

Los Angeles is not the first city fans would associate with comedian John Mulaney. That would be Chicago, his hometown and the backdrop to innumerable childhood anecdotes in his stand-up act, or New York, where he broke out as a writer on “Saturday Night Live” and shot a special at Radio City Music Hall. But L.A. is where Mulaney now lives; it’s also currently home to the second iteration of Netflix Is a Joke, a massive, weeklong comedy festival organized by the streaming service as a show of genre dominance. (Netflix stand-up head Robbie Praw used to run programming at Montreal’s vaunted Just for Laughs event and has essentially created a West Coast version.) And so we have “John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in LA,” a weeklong special event combining studio segments, pre-taped sketches and man-on-the-street interviews into a sort of pop-up talk show.

Break out Tom Cruise’s famous coconut cake, the wait is finally over. “Hacks,” TV’s funniest comedy about comedy, is back after a lengthy hiatus. The third season picks up a year after the events of Season 2, which saw Deborah (Emmy winner Jean Smart) fire her writing partner, Ava (Emmy nominee Hannah Einbinder), following the successful release of her comedy special so Ava could finally begin developing her own career.
The new season, the first two episodes of which are now streaming on Max, is as sharp and funny as ever as the two friends find their way back to one another when Deborah decides to have another go at hosting a late-night show. The enviable list of guest stars for the nine-episode season includes J. Smith-Cameron, Helen Hunt, Christina Hendricks and Christopher Lloyd. But it’s the chemistry between Smart and Einbinder — easily one of TV’s best...

Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton entering into a unique arrangement, J.Lo fighting evil artificial intelligence, the roasting of an NFL legend, a retelling of the invention of the Pop Tart, Brooke Shields and Benjamin Bratt at war and John Mulaney’s six-night live comedy event from Los Angeles are some of the big titles hitting Netflix in May.
Debuting on May 3 is Jerry Seinfeld’s directorial debut, Unfrosted. The comedy legend works both sides of the camera for this humorous feature take on the birth of the Pop Tart. The movie is set in 1963 as breakfast cereal giants Kellogg’s and Post compete to become the first company to create a morning pastry. Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan and Amy Schumer also star, with Hugh Grant more than likely to steal the whole film with a turn as Tony the Tiger.

Trevor Noah recently stepped down from “The Daily Show” after seven years as host, hired in 2015 when previous host Jon Stewart decided it was time to exit.

“It was shortly after the ‘SNL’ 40th anniversary,” Mulaney told hosts Doug Herzog and Jen Cheney.

John Mulaney is back on top of the stand-up comedy world following the release of “Baby J,” his new Netflix special that digs into his recent addiction relapse and subsequent return to sobriety. John Mulaney is answering questions about being asked by Comedy Central executives if he was interested in hosting “The Daily Show” when Jon Stewart bowed out in 2015.
During a recent appearance on Doug Herzog and Jen Chaney’s “Basic!” podcast, Herzog — who was president of Viacom Music and Entertainment Group, which oversaw Comedy Central, until 2017 — asked Mulaney if he recalled the conversation he had with then-president of Comedy Central, Kent Alterman, about potentially taking over. “I think we were floating your interest in that and you were very lukewarm as I remember,” Herzog said.
Mulaney explained that he ultimately passed because, in part, his Fox sitcom “Mulaney” had just been canceled after only one season.
“It was shortly after the SNL 40th anniversary. I had a sitcom on Fox. They aired all 13 [episodes] but it was canceled. It didn’t do good numbers,” Mulaney said. “I remember going to dinner with Kent.

Keith Richards and Mick Jagger were a powerful rock duo that led The Rolling Stones to international success. However, in the 1980s, the two had a brief feud as Jagger and Richards appeared to be moving in opposite directions. "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" is one of the most inexplicable movies in recent memory. It's a sequel to a much-maligned movie that came out over a decade ago. It's subtitled "The Last Wish" and billed as the end of an era despite only being the second movie to star Antonio Banderas' swashbuckling kitty. Its star-studded cast includes the likes of not only Banderas, but also Florence Pugh, Olivia Colman, John Mulaney, Harvey Guillén, and Salma Hayek Pinault.
The movie has also gained a tremendous amount of acclaim since its release in theaters in December, picking up an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature Film and earning glowing reviews, including one for IGN in which /Film writer Rafael Motamayor compared it favorably to The X-Men franchise high point "Logan," a comparison that caught on in a big way throughout the movie's theatrical run. /Film's own review, from Josh Spiegel,...

In the niche world of comedy touring, Mike Berkowitz has always been “the guy.” Over his 21-year career, the agent has been a go-to dealmaker in the live entertainment space, diversifying the income of star clients and launching digital crossovers.
Berkowitz, who co-heads WME’s comedy group, first distinguished himself by tapping into the lucrative college market. He also blazed a trail for new acts to reach stadium-level stardom in a landscape where only the likes of Eddie Murphy and George Carlin once played.
The sector has exploded in the past decade, and Berkowitz has been at the forefront. In 2022, he booked and shepherded production on Bill Burr’s 31 million-grossing tour, as well as Kevin Hart and Chris Rock’s co-headlining shows. He sent out John Mulaney (50.2 million) and Amy Schumer (9 mil- lion), the latter for her first tour in five years. Next, he’ll map out dates for Ramy Youssef,...

The 28-year-old reflected on how much has changed since he started in September 2014 at age 20, becoming the show’s first cast member born in the Nineties.

During a Friday performance on his “From Scratch” tour, comedian John Mulaney surprised his audience — and drew criticism from some fans — when Dave Chappelle appeared as the opener and told what were described as “transphobic jokes.”
Chappelle’s opening set occurred during a show at Ohio State University’s Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio. Although there is no footage from the event, as attendees were required to lock their phones up beforehand, several audience members took to social media afterwards to criticize the show. According to attendees, Chappelle appeared as a surprise opener, and told jokes targeting the transgender community. Mulaney reportedly came onstage and hugged Chappelle at the conclusion of the opening set. Some fans in the crowd expressed their disappointment after the show on Twitter:

Photo: 'Hacks'/HBO Max There have been many shows about comedians and stand-up comedians on television, from ‘Seinfeld’ to ‘Mulaney’ and ‘I’m Dying Up Here’. Most of these shows focus on male comics, especially white, male comedians, and their perspective on the world. There have not been many comedy shows about female stand-up comedians or even examine the female perspective, something which the new HBO Max show ‘Hacks’ seeks to fix. 'Hacks' - The Premise ‘Hacks’ follows Jean Smart as Deborah Vance, a legendary Las Vegas comedienne and QVC host who is struggling to maintain her relevancy with younger audiences. In an effort to keep her career afloat she hires a 25-year-old comedy writer who cannot get work anywhere else named Ava (played by Hannah Einbinder) to help freshen up her material and appeal to a new generation. The two end up learning from each other and Deborah decides to mentor Ava.

Penny Marshall, the actress and director behind “Big” and “A League of Their Own,” has died at age 75. Marshall passed away during the evening of December 17 at her California home, the New York Daily News confirms. The director’s publicist, Michelle Bega, said she passed away peacefully and died “from complications from diabetes.”
Marshall rose to prominence in Hollywood during the 1970s thanks to her leading role as Laverne DeFazio on the ABC sitcom “Laverne & Shirley.” The series was the most-watched comedy on U.S. television during its third season and ran for a total of eight seasons and 178 episodes. Marshall was nominated three times for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Musical or Comedy.
As a director, Marshall broke barriers in Hollywood with her 1988 fantasy comedy “Big,” starring Tom Hanks and Elizabeth Perkins. The movie made Marshall the first female director to earn over $100 million at the box office.

After months of touring, John Mulaney is bringing his latest hour of stand-up to one final stop — Netflix.
“Kid Gorgeous at Radio City,” which hits the streaming service May 1, follows one of Mulaney’s seven sold-out shows at the iconic venue and is part of a multi-special deal with Netflix he signed earlier this year. It’s easy to forget, but John Mulaney was never actually a ‘Saturday Night Live’ cast member. Yes, he’d make the occasional pop-in to Weekend Update as a correspondent — “Shut the door.” — and even starred on his own Lorne Michaels-produced sitcom (with former “SNL” cast members Nasim Pedrad and Martin Short) titled “Mulaney.” We try not to talk about that second part. But Mulaney was never even a featured player at any point. Instead, he was a writer for six seasons. That time ended in 2012, but not before he gave the “SNL” viewing audience such joys as Stefon (which he co-created with Bill Hader), “Family Flix: Rocket Dog” (more on that later), and “The Obama Show,” to name just a select few. He’s also performed on Broadway, no big deal.
Still, the same people who claim to be comedy experts seem to have no idea who John Mulaney is.
