- A prominent male member of the London City Council is kidnapped. His abduction seems to be connected to the potential election of a woman to the Council, but matters are complicated when various other prominent men disappear.
- Councillor Walter De Souza is abducted from a music hall. He was known for his opposition to the election of Jane Cobden, the first female councillor in London, though she denies involvement. Two further abductions follow, one from Susan's brothel with Susan being taken as well. The perpetrators are a gang of women led by one Raine and Reid works out the link. The women are workers in a factory making matches where phosphorus has caused their disfigurement, a grievance taken up by Jane, and the kidnapped men are seen as being responsible for their misfortune. Susan is released with a ransom note for the men but sympathises with the women and helps them elude the police. Though the gang is eventually foiled, Susan's outlook is immeasurably altered.—don @ minifie-1
- DI Reid and DS Drake investigate the abduction of a city councilor, Walter De Souza. He was attending a performance at Blewett's music hall with his friend Pembury - a music hall performance about Jack the Ripper that he found disgusting and was intent on closing down - when he was snatched from his chair. Reid soon determines that they are dealing with a gang of women and interviews his De Souza's political rival Jane Cobden who has supported women's causes. The case takes on a different tone when the gang kidnaps Long Susan.The main target of the attack however was one of Susan's customers, Thomas Ely and the police learn there have been other such attacks on men in various parts of the city. It becomes evident that the gang of women are seeking revenge on the men who have caused them grief.—garykmcd
