- English expat Stuart Pritchard (Stephen Merchant) and his best mate, newly-separate Wade (Nate Torrence), are trying to pick up two women in a Los Angeles bar, without success. Wade says "he's not feeling it," and Stuart drives his convertible alone to a grocery store and spends a long time picking out dinner from the frozen section. At his large home in the L.A. hills, he makes his meal of chicken wings alone in his kitchen and sits down to watch television.
Soon he is joined by the tenant who rents his pool house, Jessica (Christine Woods) and her agent-with-benefits, Glen (Sean Wing). Jessica and Stuart joke about Stuart's lack of strength. Although Jessica suggests she and Glen grab dinner this week, Glen blows her off and makes a hasty treat. Jessica tries to hide her embarrassment and Stuart politely pretends not to notice. They stay to watch TV together.
On a sunny day, Stuart, Wade, and Wade's young daughter Cassidy (Reece Caddell) are hiking with the view of L.A. behind them. Stuart is encouraging Wade to get out and meet women, but Wade wants to get back with his wife. He's depressed that his anniversary is coming up on Friday and he won't be with his wife. Stuart promises to take Wade out bowling that night.
In Stuart's home office, where he runs a web design company, he is talking to his assistant, Rory (Kyle Mooney). He overhears Jessica in his living room coaching one of her acting clients, Courtney (Sarah Wright). Stuart swaggers in and tries to flirt with Courtney by talking about web design skills. He tries to get a date with her, ostensibly to talk about web sites, but the most she can offer is that he swing by the club Saboteur Friday night where she'll be. Jessica notes that Stuart can never get into clubs.
Standing out of earshot of Jessica and Courtney, Stuart calls Glen, Jessica's boyfriend, who is influential enough to get people into clubs. Glen doesn't recognize who Stuart is until Stuart reminds me of the chicken wings. Pleased that Glen is having his name put on the guest list at Saboteur, Stuart returns to Courtney and Jessica. Jessica reminds Stuart that he was supposed to take out Wade on Friday to cheer him up, and Courtney suggests Stuart bring Wade along.
On Friday night, Stuart picks up Wade in front of work, and is chagrined to see that Wade has invited his friend Kives (Kevin Weisman), a lascivious and sarcastic young man who is in a wheelchair.
Events do not go as planned for Stuart at Club Saboteur. He sees Courtney who is nice to him but he can only make awkward conversation. He offers to buy Courtney and her two friends a drink and ends up buying a round for a whole group and taking orders, then spilling them all over himself and others. Moreover, Kives is the only one having luck with meeting women.
Stuart drives a drunken Wade, Kives, and Kives's girl to her apartment, and carries Kives up four flights of stairs. He brings a woozy Wade to his hotel room and leaves him on his bed, then drives alone, again stopping at the grocery store for something to eat from the frozen section.
At home, he finds Jessica, who's hiding from Glen. She had called him to come over, then changed her mind. Jessica and Stuart tease each other about their depressing nights before she returns to the guest house and Stuart microwaves up his dinner.
